LDWA Canal Canter - Completing B2B marathons
Welcome to my 2024 LDWA Birmingham Canal Canter video. Hosted by the Heart of England Long Distance Walkers Association, the Canal Canter is a Challenge Event open to walkers and runners and offers an 18mile or 26.2mile option. It takes you through the hidden Birmingham Canal Network and hosts 5 well stocked aid stations.
I’m training to run the Centurion Running Autumn 100 in October. I wanted a high mileage weekend as part of my training preparation. The day before, I ran 26.6 miles along the Thames Path and today, I wanted to make it a back to back weekend by completing another marathon distance.
Big thanks to all the volunteers and also to anyone who came and said hello.

@@Giovanni-vx8xl - Hi Giovanni, they varied between 1 hour and 3 hours rest. The long gap was when I was on a 2hr shift at work but was on my feet for the duration. I tend to rest a bit on the stops but also potter around so I don’t get too settled. The basic set I do is 4x 7 in a day with around a 1.5-2hr gap and my peak is usually 4x10 but I wanted to hit that extra 10 on this day. I still had to fit it in with my other commitments but if I hadn’t, I find a maximum of 2hours works best for me. Any longer and I’d lose the momentum of getting out again. Any combination works well with either distance/reps/rest time so if it’s a new idea for you, try say 4x 4or 5 miles or whatever you’re comfortable with. Your legs should feel slightly tired when you head out each time but not trashed. It’s finding the best combination that works best. Hope you enjoy having a go at this 😀

Completely misjudged time and distance and had to exceed LT2 to furiously pedial it back in time. Wallingford is lovely. It's good to see you moving on and doing what you love doing. Just to let you know, 3 weeks ago, I finally did Aston Hall parkrun. Very friendly people there. I really hope it continues, but if it hadn't been cancelled when I was first heading there, I wouldn't have met you and Rory, so I'm happy with the way it turned out. I also did Severn Bridge parkrun last weekend, one of the best and a must do again, and of course, I rewatched both of your videos before each one. Well done on your 100k. I’ve only covered that exact distance once before, but even if you finished (no matter how you felt) then you’ve got enough in the tank to cover 100 miles 😁 I think finishing any distance and then imagining running further, you think you can’t. I feel like that. I run 50k and think, no way could I run more. Then you pace a longer distance and then realise you can cover 50 miles, but not a step further and so on. Even crossing a 10k or half marathon finish line, I’m glad I’m at the end. A lot can go wrong on 100 mile races but I love the challenge of not knowing if I’m going to even make it to the end. That single thought has a massive appeal. I’m really tempted to go for another centurion 100 next year. All of them would be routes I’d love to have a go at…. Might even see you there!

Loved the visit to the towns, definitely different vibe than the US stuff. Also learned some new vocabulary feom your video: recce and dual carriageway. I am going to have to drop those into my conversations here. You look so happy too Rachel. Always love warching your running adventures.

Thanks Eddie. Glad to have added some new words to add to your chats 😁 I think I lean more to longer distances because I have to work so hard to get any speed. Very short distances I’m terrible, but I seem to find the longer I go the (relatively) easier it gets. The down side from ultra running though is it takes ages to fully recover. I’m trying to get enough miles in without burning out, but not too few, that I haven’t trained enough. Hopefully I can get the balance right 🤞 Hope you’re still training well too?

I should have filmed when we first got out of the car, we were being blown sideways and the rain was much heavier. I don’t think we could’ve picked a worse summers day. If I had to choose between that and a heat wave though, I’d definitely go cool, wet and windy 🌧️

I was about to say that doing 100 miles is a bit mad, but then i saw the flapjack 😅 Wait for me! 🏃‍♂️💨 I've been thinking a lot myself about how to have the discipline to go slowly, walk the hills, save some energy for later etc. It's all harder than it sounds. We’ll be trialing a different cake on each visit. It’s a good incentive to go back 😁 Pacing over such a long distance is a tricky one. I’d like a bit in the bank over at least the 1st and probably 2nd leg but beyond that it’s anyone’s guess. The best I’ve done is being able to run walk to 80 miles but my last 100 I walked the last 20 miles. It threw my timing way over the average for the run. 35 minute miles was gruelling 😩 If I can do at least some running on that final leg I’ll class it as a win 🥇
