Have I done enough? NEWPORT MARATHON 2024 - new route

  • Welcome to my 2024 Newport Marathon race video. This is my third year of recording my spring marathon race but it’s also the first time in over a decade that I stand on the start line not knowing if there is any chance of a pb.
    I’m aiming to go under 3:14, a time that allows female runners to qualify for a London Championship spot, but failing a sub 3:14, I would still be happy with a time under 3:15.
    My training paces weren’t quite as fast as in 2023 so I was unsure how today’s race would pan out.
    2024 has a new route for marathon runners and it’s also the first year that they’ve added a half marathon race as well.
    Rory was aiming for a pb time of sub 3:30.
    Find out if we both hit our targets as we share the pancake flat roads of Newport, South Wales, with over 2000 other marathon runners on 28th April.
    Massive thanks to Brett for cheering and filming, both were very much appreciated and a huge well done to Andy. His race day video will tell you his own experiences from Newport.
    ‪@itsonandy‬
    ‪@ob1brand‬
    If you shouted hi or came and said hello, thank you so much. It was so lovely that you did. I hope you all had a brilliant day as well!
    Thanks so much for watching 😊

    Brilliant video Rachel, they're so good to watch as someone who's never ran a marathon. I find them so interesting. Hopefully, one day, my fitness will allow me to give it a go. The sense of achievement must be amazing. Well done to both of you 👏👏

      Hi Neil, thanks so much. I love getting to race after so many weeks of training. The weeks can be a slog sometimes but I’ve never not enjoyed that finish line feeling. I didn’t run my first marathon till I was 34 even though I’d been running for years. Once you run one, you’ll see it’s not as bad as you think…and probably get hooked 😁

    Well done Rachel and Rory. Stellar performance from you both. Rachel, sooner or later you will find your speed dropping off, it happens to everybody, people either adjust their expectations, or in many cases they can't bear to see themselves getting slower and give up. Racing and training for speed isn't everything. Can't wait to see the next event. Take care both of you.

      I’m exactly there now, reached 53 and it’s hard and sadly brings a tear at times especially dealing with a few injuries probably self induced by pushing myself beyond what is realistic. Slowly adjusting to being slower and more prone to injuries and needing more S+C days. It is hard though 😢❤🎉 but onwards we go, I’m still alive fit, lean and raring to go, that go is just a little slower 😂

      Hi Peter, thank you! I honestly don’t ever think I’ll be able to match my full marathon, and half marathon times I ran last year but I’m ok with that. To have hit them just once meant the world to me. I’m probably on that plateau now where there still lies that possibility but equally, my best year may have passed. I think there were a few factors that I could have changed that could have improved my time this year. Another race would have been one, either a half or a 20 miler further in the block. I did Warwick on week 3 so probably not enough. Also my strength sessions probably need a change out. I’m looking at setting up a new multi gym at home to completely revamp how I strength train. Plus I did no cross training this year, no swimming or cycling. But even if none of those were the reason, I’m still really proud of this year’s run 😊

    Good video Rach - and looking at the Newport message the other day - you ran an Ultramarathon as well :) Enjoy the summer break, see you around soon. (Next marathon for me now is Chester in October, but enjoying some shorter sessions at the moment.)

      There’s been a lot of comments on the Newport Facebook page about the race distance. For a while though, this race will still be my shortest for a while 😁
      Best of luck with your summer training and any races you do. I should really give an autumn marathon a go one year. I always think it’d be too hard with training in the heat…. and not fill my calendar with other stuff 🤣

    Hearing you say you recorded 26.5 struck a chord with me because I clocked the same distance on my Garmin too. I had a look at other runner’s results on Strava, and I’ve seen far too many 26.5’s to make me suspect the course was long. I’m not convinced that missing the tangents, or GPS inaccuracy, would account for it. If that’s true, then you unofficially ran the marathon distance much closer to the time you wanted and are fitter than you’ve given yourself credit for . It certainly makes me feel better because I was officially 3 minutes over the time I wanted despite running on pace for most of the race. The time taken to run the additional distance took me 2 and a half minutes based on a 6:53 average pace. Either way, you still had a cracking run. Well done!

    • @conradburdekin722
      @conradburdekin722 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Don’t forget they always run long. So whilst this sounds like it was a bit longer than usual, you’d probably still have done 26.3 or 26.4 at any marathon.

    • @peterheyes240
      @peterheyes240 Před 2 měsíci +1

      I didn’t realise that to be honest and I’ll keep it in mind for my next one so I’ve got a margin for error in my pacing. This one came out at 26.56 which seems a bit longer than usual. I still wouldn’t have got the time I wanted, but it’s good to know that my pace wasn’t as bad as the chip was indicating.

    • @conradburdekin722
      @conradburdekin722 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@peterheyes240 yes absolutely. I did a marathon recently that was almost a kilometre long 😰. Then did London - 700m long. Manchester last year was the best and that was still 460m long.

    • @racheld1844
      @racheld1844  Před 2 měsíci +2

      I think it’s rare for a course to measure exact or within a few metres. There’s lots to consider, gps, course mile markers, pacers, the line you take round corners and weaving through runners. All can throw you off as to what distance you’ve really run on that course. I like to use the lanes of running track to understand extra distances in races. The difference between lane 1 & 2 is just over 7.5 metres. That difference is for just 1 lap. If you take a running line round each corner of a marathon as if you were in lane 2, it would soon add up. Which of course makes pace difficult to judge. I agree that we all probably ran long. I think I’d have been more unhappy if I’d needed it for a qualification time or been a few seconds off a pb but on this particular race, the extra time didn’t make much difference to me. It’ll be interesting to see what the distances measure next year.
      Well done on your run too Peter. Hope you’ve had a good recovery 🙂

    Awesome video!! I was at newport this year too. It was my first marathon. I've been running for about 18 months and managed 3:58. I was over the moon. Tough course as it was so quiet. But you couldn't ask for a flatter route.

    • @racheld1844
      @racheld1844  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Hi, congratulations on hitting sub 4 on your first marathon! That’s a brilliant achievement. I’ve never run at a massive event like London or Manchester, so for me , I don’t have anything to compare it to. Personally I felt there were just enough people on route. I like to have gaps to get into my own paces but also have runners to tag along with. Too many though and I think I’d get a bit frustrated with the congestion. I used to run all my spring marathons in Stratford- upon-Avon. That’s a 2 lap course, pretty much the same. 1 lap with half runners, 1 with just marathon runners. Lap 2 was always deserted for large sections. I didn’t mind it but what I didn’t like so much was that it wasn’t flat! Newport is a hidden gem. Flat as you’ll ever get. Well done again. Hope you’ve got the bug and keep up with your training…. and get to enter another marathon 😁

      Last year was such a fine line. Every time I turned up for a session, I thought there was no way I’d hit the numbers, but I did, and better. I kept thinking I was going to burn out, but I was just able to keep going. This year, I could only scrap through on a some, and lots of runs just felt harder. I did come into this year with fewer races under my belt so I do think that had a lot to do with it.

    Super well done, how you manage to film and talk to camera is a feat in itself, expect you PB would be at least 1 min better without the filming and talking which must play havoc with the breathing rhythm. Be proud ❤

      Thanks Karl. I’m always in 2 minds as to whether to film or not. Up until I get running, I could easily leave to camera at home but a few miles in I’m always glad I have it with me. I look back at the footage when I get home and see so much I don’t even remember. Luckily the camera is tiny and really easy to carry. I guess there’ll always be a slight trade off with pace but I love that I’ve got a video I can look back on 😊

    Very much on the radar for next year this one. Which of the 2023 or 2024 courses did you prefer?

    • @racheld1844
      @racheld1844  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Personally, I think it’s a great event. Big enough to get some atmosphere but not so big to cause any logistical/ congestion problems. The park and ride worked well for us as we were early (I know others later on found it to be busy), bag drop, starting pens and organisation I couldn’t fault. I liked how we didn’t have to wait long to cross the line too, no hanging around. My only negative is the usual not enough toilets. Queues 30 mins out were too long to join. Hopefully that’ll be something for next year.
      As for the route, I definitely preferred this years. I know some don’t like the out and backs but for me, I do. Last year, in sections you could be either on your own or in small groups of a few runners. This year, there always people around you, whether they were marathon runners or half marathon runners. Plus if there is someone there you know, you’ll get to pass them, that wouldn’t have been possible last year.
      See you later this morning 😁

    Well done Rachel! That's a sub 3h14m, the course was 300-400m long.
    The 3hr pacer came in at 3h02m with the sub 3 pack and was adamant the course was long. A long mile towards the end threw everything off. The 3h15m pacer was also off... As you found out.
    Also if you had anyone tracking you on the R4W app they'll have noticed the discrepancies of the pacing via the timing split mats on the road. They measured the distances of some of the mats (and hence pace calculations) were also wrong.
    Check your Newport 2023 race and see how far your GPS watch had you running... It'll be about 26.35 (there isn't much gps interference in the countryside) much less than the 26.55 this year... Further evidence the course was long.

    • @racheld1844
      @racheld1844  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Hi Martin. I checked my 2023 distance and it came in at 26:38 so a bit long, but not by as much as this year. I didn’t know the 3hour pacer came in over. That must have been a bit of a disappointment for anyone clinging on till the end.
      The timing mats last year seemed off as well. Those tracking me thought I’d dropped off massively in the middle miles to then come back with a super sonic last third. I’ve looked at my own splits from the timing mats from this year and up until 20 miles, I was running the same pace like clockwork, but the mats told a different story.
      If I’d have done my own run last Sunday, I would have stopped at 26.2 and got my goal time so I do see that I got exactly what I thought I was capable of. It would have been nice to see that on the Newport clock though but I always take official race results as my final time. Hopefully the next time I race that distance, it won’t say so far on my watch 😁

      @@racheld1844it's official now. See below:
      Thank you for your patience as we’ve been looking into reports around the accuracy of the Marathon course distance at the Newport Marathon Festival on Sunday, 28 April, coupled with the Bank Holiday weekend delay.
      This issue has been taken very seriously and we have been having an ongoing dialogue with the Course Measurer/Association of UK Course Measurers (AUKCM).
      Unfortunately, the AUKCM has concluded that there was an error with their course measurement, resulting in the Marathon being 276m too long, which equates to 0.171 miles.
      Run 4 Wales is disappointed that this has happened at one of its events and understands and apologies unreservedly to those impacted, particularly those aiming for good-for-age qualifying times.
      For this reason, we have been working with London Marathon Events who have agreed that times will be amended for those applying for a Good for Age entry at the London Marathon, should the athlete have been affected in gaining a place. An equivalent number of seconds will be removed from the finish times of those applying for a Good for Age entry. For example, a 3-hour finish time would be corrected approximately by 70 seconds, a 3½-hour finish time would be corrected by 82 seconds and a 4-hour finish time would be corrected by 94 seconds. This will be done automatically via the London Marathon system when applying.

      @@martinjamescox - wow, I never expected to hear that. Even though many said it had recorded long, a lot of courses just do. By my calculations that would put me at 3:14:05. Probably a time that my watch would have put me at vs the distance. Shame they don’t amend everyone’s results on the official page, as even those not going good for age would like to see what their time should be. Maybe the technicalities to fix that would be too difficult.
      3:14 is the qualifying time (well for 2024,it might change for 2025) for a female championship place at London. But looks like I was still just outside that. I probably wouldn’t have entered anyway, but I always like the option.
      Thanks again for posting the statement from Newport 🙂
