  • Welcome to my 50 mile training day video. I ran 5 lots of 10 miles all in one day. I won a free entry into the Peak District 50 mile ultramarathon that takes place on 29th July 2023 and I had less than a month to prepare. Today I take you along on one of my favourite ultramarathon training sessions. A spin on the usual single long run and at the start of the day I had no idea how far I’d go.
    If you’d like to follow my progress on the day, here is the link to the tracker. It probably won’t be live till the morning of the race (7am start) I don’t have a race number yet but I’m sure you’ll find me as it’s a very small event (Rachel Davies is my full name, just incase there’s another Rachel)

      Hi Mary. I can’t remember the first time I ran this session but I wanted to create the ‘I don’t want to get going again feeling’ which seems to work. By covering the miles from home as well, it means everything is to hand at change overs. You can’t forget anything because it’s all at home if you need it. There is a lot of pleasure and freedom to be had by training on your own. I very much like being my own boss 😁

    This is your year, Rachel. Your hard work is going to pay off although I am not sure if you are looking for a time or just to conquer the distance and enjoy yourself. I am not familiar with the Peak District though the name sounds ominous but I am certain you will handle it. You mentioned previously that had no idea of what the course looked like since you were the lucky winner of a lottery drawing. Hills, stiles and heat are going to be added minor impediments but you can handle any of them. You are in top form and focused. Enjoy yourself and watch out for those demonic white flowers. Looking forward to following your successful 50 miler.

      Hi Donald. So the background to this race is that I’d been eyeing it up anyway, since last year. It had been pencilled in on my race calendar but I’d made no attempt to enter or train for it. I was ready to dismiss it but when the competition came up I thought why not. Then I won. I’ve never been to the Peak District but I watched the race organisers route description video last year so it’s not 100% foreign to me. I’m thinking very few stiles, hills yes, heat won’t be a problem as it’s forecast cool and maybe showers. Hoping there’s no hog weed but if I see any I’ll be sure to avoid it 😁
      Oh, time wise, I never work to a time on these kind of races. That’s out of my hands on the hills. I’d like to say I’ll be taking it easy but I’m just too competitive with myself.

      @@racheld1844 Thanks for the reply Rachael, I used to average 120 miles a week when I was younger, walking, jogging and cycling. My diet was a bowel of Kellogg’s sustain or Kellogg’s start for breakfast, for dinner 1 banana 2 pieces of toast with marmite, for tea I would have boil in the bag cod in sauce with potatoes, spinach , broccoli and carrots, I remember having regular catnaps for half an hour when possible and straight after work, I don’t know how I used to do it but I felt recharged after each nap, every now and again I would eat a lot of protein rich foods, I’ve never felt so good when I was able to do this and felt super human, watching your videos reminds me of those times, I still walk a lot and don’t drive a car anymore and still very careful with what I eat and when I eat it, I can relate to you Rachael your videos give me strength 😄

    Wow! Nice work Rachel. Your splits were awesome and this is definitely a good sign that you'll be capable of taking on your ultra. Usually going from the marathon to an ultra isn't that big of a leap and it sounds like you already have a solid base. I was always "interested" in an ultra but for me, it really doesn't fit into my best skill set. I'd dream of it, but after running 26.2 miles 27 times there really wasn't but once or twice where I felt I had anything left in me to go even further. I was happy to stop at 26.2 Enjoy your content and looking forward to see how you do in your big race.

      @racheld1844  Před rokem +1

      Hi Eddie. I think a lot of runners who get to marathon distance wonder how on earth they could carry on past that 26 mile point. I remember how even the marathon seemed an impossible task. I’d been running for years before I took the leap. Then the thought of an ultra seemed crazy. If you asked me to run an extra mile on any of my road marathons I’d say no way. But heading out on the trails and running slower and realising it’s not the time that matters, it’s the distance, it makes it more possible. Walking is ok and eating as much food as I can stomach is completely different to going full felt on the roads. On both my 100 mile runs I got to 26 left to go and thought…oh not far now 😂

      I'm much more familiar with the Dark Peak and looking at the website the Dark Peak half of the route is actually still about half in the white peak itself. However, they do have you going up and onto the Great Ridge as well as up Win Hill, so that middle section of the route will be tough. Definitely just take it easy on the big inclines, short steps and a consistent effort up Win Hill will serve you well.

Trainers are now on 996 so just one easy run tomorrow and they’ll be done. They were fine for the tarmac of the first 4 runs but I’d probably be better with a light trail shoe for the race. I have the new inov8 Parkclaw trainers I bought a few months ago that I’ll be wearing. Nearly all the route will be trail and with all the rain we keep getting, there might be some wetter patches. They are still brand new and unworn, but I just know they’ll be fine. They’re like a slipper, so comfortable. Seems like a very bad idea to do that, but I did it with their predecessors and I was fine…and with the new balance ones hitting their totals, it’ll be a new pair after the race. Hi Olga, thank you. I don’t mind long distances on the paths and roads. I do have some trails near by but they’re not that smooth a ride. Lots of gates and overgrown fields so I opted for a more easy option for the miles. Really looking forward to the flowing trails at the weekend though. I just hope it’s not too wet 😁

    A hugely impressive day, especially around your world schedule! You made it look relatively easy!
    How did your legs feel the next day?
    John was impressed with half orange juice and water and the jam butty, both Ron Hill specials. I (Dawn) love a jam butty and used the half orange and water with a pinch of salt in my early marathon training days. 😊
    As for the shoes, I do agree you can run on a budget and don't need carbon shoes. Personally I like them but have non carbon shoes too and always buy shoes in sales.

    • @racheld1844
      @racheld1844  Před rokem +2

      Thank you 😊 surprisingly my legs were great after. I had one day off then did plenty of recovery miles and managed to build up to another week of just over 50 miles (not all at once this time 😂)
      Having the orange juice is a really nice drink to take. The electrolyte tablets don’t have any extra energy so it’s nice the juice has some useful sweetness. Not thought of adding a pinch of Salt to it though.
      The flat bread jam sandwich’s are good because they’re already flat haha. No need to worry they’ll get squished in my pack 😁

      Hi Ben, thank you. Some training runs just seem to go better than planned and this one definitely did. Most of all I’m looking to running somewhere new. One thing running certainly does is it takes off to places I’ve not been before…and to run in what’s meant to be a beautiful part of the country, I can’t wait. It’s nice not knowing what I’ll see so that’ll help with distracting me from the distance 😁 They’ll be 100 mile runners amongst us. When I get to the finish they’ll be heading out on the other 50 mile section, I’ll be glad to finish.
      Hope everything is coming together nicely for race too Ben! 😊

    Wow. Congratulations Rachel. What an incredible day of running. Very impressive.
    Mileage aside, just doing these sessions takes mental toughness - you passed that test with flying colours. It's fair to say, you're more than ready for the ultra.
    Regarding budgets, I don't ever log mileage of shoes but will always buy from sale section and always get massive mileage from each pair. 3p a mile is very impressive.
    Good luck on 29th. I'm sure you'll be awesome.

      Hi Colin, thank you. Miles on trainers is one of things 😂 Sometimes they don’t make it to 1k. If there’s excessive wear or damage then the go earlier. If there’s nothing visible then the 1k is the max.
      I’ve nearly always found a good ‘inner strength’ to keep going or finish a challenge I set myself. I had failed to run at all on the day before this run. I just didn’t want to do it, even though everything had been set ready to go. But 24 hours later, I had that energy to get out and get that big session done. I knew if I put it off again, then I’d miss the window for getting the benefits.

      @@Giovanni-vx8xl - Hi Giovanni, they varied between 1 hour and 3 hours rest. The long gap was when I was on a 2hr shift at work but was on my feet for the duration. I tend to rest a bit on the stops but also potter around so I don’t get too settled. The basic set I do is 4x 7 in a day with around a 1.5-2hr gap and my peak is usually 4x10 but I wanted to hit that extra 10 on this day. I still had to fit it in with my other commitments but if I hadn’t, I find a maximum of 2hours works best for me. Any longer and I’d lose the momentum of getting out again. Any combination works well with either distance/reps/rest time so if it’s a new idea for you, try say 4x 4or 5 miles or whatever you’re comfortable with. Your legs should feel slightly tired when you head out each time but not trashed. It’s finding the best combination that works best.
      Hope you enjoy having a go at this 😀
