I can never get tired of watching Blast. In the beginning, that's the longest length of time I've heard someone hold a sustained note. As a trumpet player myself, these individuals are an inspiration.
For anyone who's ever tried to play this, the Stan Kenton arrangement of Malaguena, and do it justice, and failed- as everyone has- only then can you truly appreciate the mastery this represents. The top end goal of brass artists everywhere. Timeless!
We were ALL having a wonderful time! I joined the cast when it came to the US after London as a low brass player, and I can honestly say that every second I was on stage was exhilarating. Those were the days!
I think most people I know would've passed out from being so lightheaded after trying to play those notes in those ranges at that volume...........if only more people could appreciate such talent
I joined the cast when it came to the US as a low brass player, and its not that we WEREN'T playing loudly, all of our horns were mic'ed, so the sound mixer in the back of the house was the real hero there, turning individual mics on and off and up and down constantly. The second we walked off stage, they would turn them off so conversations offstage weren't piped out into the house.
This really brings me back. I miss all the exhausting, sweat-soaked rehearsals and endless performances...HOW ARE THE FEET? TOGETHER! HOW ARE THE LEGS? RELAXED! HOW IS THE WAIST? SQUARE! HOW ARE THE SHOULDERS? FORWARD! HOW ARE THE ARMS? UP! HOW ARE THE HANDS? READY! HOW ARE THE EYES? WITH PRIDE! HOW ARE THE EYES?? WITH PRIDE!! HOW ARE THE EYES??? WITH PRIDE!!!! ....silence.....*tears...tears of pride and sweat of unrelenting determination. The echo of PRIDE ringing in the ears.
This is SO awesome. I was in Drum Corps for Many years. I saw this show twice...Once on Broadway, and once here in Virginia. I have the CD. These Guys and girls are amazing!!
My band is playing this in our show this year and I was told it was inspired by this performance. Its really cool and as a clarinet player this show was super impressive to me
@@mattyteerifles2863 with a phrase of "So this is what happened to Star of Indiana" to me implies they're surprised it maybe there's some DCI history I've not come across.
I got to see this show live, nothing short of amazing. Part of the reason why I got into marching band myself! Over 15 years later and this show is engrained in my mind!
@@Outlawstar0198 Its been 20 years since I've seen it, I still think about it. That in itself should say something. However to answer your question, it was truly as good if not better than this video! Our marching band also played Malaguena for our marching show that year and won state in our class. So this song has great memories for me
I remember having to watch videos from Blast! When I was in band class in junior high school. I was and still am blown away at the technical skills and the lungs the musicians needed to have to play this piece. Let’s not forget the flexibility of the color guards. Wow.
I remember watching this vid in HS when we were rehearsing the song... We had just started rehearsals and it sounded rough to say the least. Watching this was one of those "ooooh... THAT'S how it's done!" moments lol. I've heard many many different renditions of Malagueña throughout the years, but I still refer to this performance as the gold standard for the piece. The music, the artistry, the show.. it's all there.
The great thing is...if you listen to the encore performance which took place about 2 minutes later, the Sops hit a major 3rd (and I think there is one who manages a 5th) above the final tonic chord.
La Malagueña !!!! extraordinaria interpretación !!!! Fabulosa !!!!! Será el único comentario que ha sido realizado en español ( Argentina) apesar de ser decendiente de Ingles & Frances !!!! Me encantaría que los latinos efectuen tambien sus comentarios !!!! Carlos Enrique
I had almost forgotten about this! I saw this on Broadway in June, 2001, at the old Broadway Theatre next door to the Ed Sullivan Theatre where Dave Letterman did his show. Unimaginable. They essentially did the 1961 Bill Holman arrangement that Stan Kenton played with the old, insane, can't-tame-them, loud-as-fuck Conn Mellophoniums. They blew the goddamn doors off the building. And then after 9/11, the show closed for no good reason except paranoia. Hhhhhh....
TheTurtleTube WHAT?!?! What the heck have #Blast! & 9/11 got to do with each other?! 😕 Well, that's a downright shame! 😞 Damn good thing it's available on DVD! 😃
Just a side note...when we all got together for the 27th Lancer Alumni back in 94, Star of Indiana donated a whole bunch of bugles to us...I have a three-valve Mellophone that was a Star of Indiana Mellophone...I treasure it!
I play saxophone and I'll admit that brass ensembles sound ten times cooler than anything woodwinds can produce. Drum and Bugle Corps do things woodwinds could never do. THERE.
I hate to be rude, but this is gonna sound like junk. Your trumpet section is practically twice your low brass. How can you build a house without a foundation? I hate to put you down, but that's going to be the blariest, most topheavy thing to hit this earth.
I'm impressed!!!! I was in junior Drum Corps 1964-71.....we used to do this song. I don't play the horn anymore but play guitar now. You guys and gals sound great!!!!!
Actually met and shook hands with that guy after their performance in Chicago many years ago. Very nice and warm guy just like the whole cast of Blast. And he did look like Tebow now that you mention it.
I just spend two hours trying to remember the name of this group. So glad i found it.. There is so much skill in Blast! being able to hold a stable note for a minute is pretty impressive too.
Just for the record, you don't necessarily need to use circular breathing to hold notes out that long. I can hold a note for forty seconds without it. It just takes lung capacity.
That was not a picollo trumpet you saw in the video it was a g bugle, Future corps use it.it is harder to play high on the g bugle because it is tuned a minor third lower than a standart b flat trumpet.
My high school will perform this for Christmas this year. Everybody in the village is thrilled. If we have tourists again, all the 25 seats in the barn will be taken and the show will no doubt be a great success.
I remember going to see this show when it was playing in New York City. My Band Parent Organization paid the way for all my marching units to go ( I was the Band Director). After experiencing this show, my students returned as different people ! They were so charged up ! Puts faith in the universality of the language that IS MUSIC ! as well as the need to constantly reinforce its importance in society ! thanks for posting ! ! ! ! ! ! !
This, ladies and gentlemen is true musicianship! You can argue all day about who high school band is better or which DCI corps is the best...this is the pinnacle. Outstanding even after this long!! (tips hat)
i saw this show live on broadway. i played this tune in drum corps three times (caballeros), wrote two drills for it for my college alma mater, and two percussion charts. never got a chance to conduct it as a drum major. best tune for drum corps ever. cabs 1995 and scouts 1988 are my two favorite arrangements.
Bill Holman's incredible arrangement, which is from the Capitol LP Adventures in Jazz LP, is the basis for this treatment by the Blast cast. They really kick it! Superb rendition!
Marched in the late 70's early 80's when Irving, TX was going Corp!! This was one of my favs to play. Not sure why Blast did not make it bigger. This is a KILLER version and it embraces all that was Corp back then. Great videow, thank you so much for sharing!!!!
That's a LONG way from the Salute to Disney show in 1985 that gave birth to this group! I'm not bashing Star at all. This, in addition to the short competitive life of the corps, is nothing less than an AMAZING achievement!! Congratulations, and I'm glad I got to see this production in person!!

Range and tone tend to be emphasized a lot (for a fair reason), but the cleanliness of that trumpet trill at the beginning was insane. Good lord, I wish I could play like this
I don't know about all schools, but when I left Intermediate band to go up into Marching/Concert Band, it was a requirement for us to hold a note of our choice for a whole minute without a breath..
That one mellow player holding that one note for so long! Almost a full minute! He must have been doing "rotational breathing" where you breathe through your nose and out your mouth. The performance reminds me of a mini drum and bugle corp performance. Outstanding! Thank you for the video.
God I wish they would come back to the United States. I saw the show at the Orpheum in Memphis and I swear it was life changing. It was 100 times better in person. I had goose bumps the whole time.
As a technical theatre student who does lighting and a trumpet player in marching band, this is the greatest thing ever.
I found my soulmate. But i'm a snare drummer tho. But i am a light technician.

it's recirculated breathing

A big fan of the Kenton version with Vido Musso on tenor sax . This comes too close to compare in sound and over the top of course in dance.
I think it's safe to say the percussionists are having a WONDERFUL time!
Erin Harrison it's Malagueña. Pretty hard not to enjoy it

or, if you've ever played a wind instrument, you'd know that you can control your airflow. Even louder volumes don't always take more air.
