  • First day of an overnight hike of the Gabrielino Trail in Angeles National Forest. I start in La Canada-Flintridge and hike to the Valley Forge Trail Camp, passing Switzer Falls/Picnic Area and Red Box Gap. The trail contains many water crossings, as well as ruins from the Great Hiking Era.

    I just discovered your channel via your Skyline-to-the-Sea videos, and was excited to see that you had vlogged the Gabrielino Trail as I've hiked this one. Took me a little while to realize that we did this around the same time - I was on the trail from March 18-20, 2019!

      Oh, cool. What a nice coincidence. I was horrified watching the fire perimeters eat up both of those trails this past year. The 2nd half of this trail is ash and I think only Day 1 of Skyline to Sea escaped that fire.

    The dam was Brown Mountain Dam. It filled up with debris within 10 to 25 years after building it and the road had already washed out, so it was left as is. The road closure for Angeles Crest was due to a landslide farther up and it was closed for months. The cabins at 16:23 are Opids Camp built in the great hiking period and it was then bought by the City of Long Beach as Camp Hi-Hill and ran until I guess without looking it up about 15 or 20 years ago. Valley Forge where you spent the night used to be a drive in campground and yes it was a resort too before that as I recall, but I don't remember the particulars. The only section of the total 28 mile trail I haven't been on is between Redbox and Upper Switzers. Someday I would like to do all of it at once. I have done the Silver Moccasin thru the San Gabriels too, but unofficially. Great videos, I just subscribed. Thanks...

      @@susannesadventurejournal1920 If you are interested, there is one author who wrote exclusively about Southern California Mountains and produced both history books and trail guides that can still be obtained. He passed away in 2018. His name is John W. Robinson. Some of his books are still selling on Amazon. The one that started it is: Trails of the Angeles, 100 hikes of the San Gabriels. I have around a dozen of this books and guides. He is unique in that he centered on the mountains. Take care and I will eventually go thru most of your videos and watch any new ones as you produce them. Thanks for sharing!

    Very cool, I'm planning on doing this trail soon now that the weather is looking pretty good. About how long did it take you to go from the start to Valley Forge? I'm planning on doing it as a 3 day, 2 night trip with my first night as dispersed camping near Commodore Switzer's Camp and night two either at West Fork or Devore.
    Also if you haven't already check out John W Robinson's book The San Gabriels. Amazon or your local library usually has a copy since it's been out of print. But it gives you the complete history of all these places you've been passing. You seem like your a history buff like me when it comes to the lore of our mountains :)

      I think it was +/- 9 hrs. I will definitely have to check out the book, all the history I learned about the area was from trying to look up info about the trail. It would be nice to have a more legitimate source. Enjoy your time on the trail!

      The Robinson book is really great. I work for the Forest and we use it as a reference all the time. Great historic photos of what places looked like too. Check his Trails of the Angeles too (or San Bernardino’s).

    Susanne...i really enjoyed this 2 part video . I am gonna ride Gabrielino out and back to the dam with the waterfall, tomorrow. Going on a weekday to avoid traffic. I'm a hiker/biker.. Mountain Biker...but a lot of times i push my ride to enjoy the views and nature. My question to you is...are you ever afraid while hiking these areas? Like encountering animals or crazy humans? It will be my first time going here..any advice? I will have a gps tracker sending info to my kids. Was there cell service here?

      @susannesadventurejournal1920  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi! None of my animal encounters (including bears) have been particularly frightening. They have all given me the impression that I am the scariest thing in the woods. People, on the other hand, are not scared of me and can be unpredictable. I always am cautious when I see people, especially at easy places to access like trailheads. However, most people on this trail were very friendly and also just out to enjoy the forest. Enjoy your ride.

      Also, I don't remember if there was cell service. I just always assume that there won't be any.

      Check the Bobcat fire closures from the Angeles National Forest. I know they opened quite a bit back up recently, but I'm not sure about the Santa Anita Canyon area. I'm not sure about GPS track, but I used the Gaia app to see where I was on trail.
