      I hate myself that I bought the 6D Mark II a while ago. It's still a great camera, don't get me wrong. But the EOS R is not more expensive by a lot. The log and 4k is a great addition too.
      I tried it at Photokina and it's a great piece of tech - solid build, great to hold. TBH, it's my fav camera right now across all the brands.

      It is probably because of its high bit rate. Higher bitrate = bigger size files = longer to render (I know at higher bitrate will probably give a better image, but the 100 Mbps on the Sony A7III just makes the files a much nicer size to work with).

    Nice video Matti. I really want to get this camera as I have mostly Canon glass and I love Canon cameras for photography. But what's putting me off is the fact that when using crop lenses (APS-C) such as the Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 the camera downsizes the output image from a 30 megapixel to 11 megapixel. I was contemplating selling my 80d until I realised this. Also, when you get used to handheld shooting with an IBIS sensor camera like the GH5 it's very hard to go back to cameras that don't have it.

      Canon is not stupid. they will not going to kill the 1dx2 like this. thats why they didn't kill the 5dmk4 when they brought up the 6dmk2. Canon is not like Sony that they are killing their products so easily. they are building workhorses to serve you for long time, not just for couple of years. Something else to remember, the EOS R is the entry level mirrorless, not the flagship, and as you can see, in many situations is better than the other flagship cameras(i really love the way it looks on the 180MBps, its way too good to be true if you think about it). to be fair in comparison, you need to compare the EOS R with the Nikon Z6 and the A73. yeah i know, the R doesn't have stabilization, but the IS on the lenses are if not better than Sony, they are equally good.

    Thank you Matti for your disclaimer, appreciate it.
    I wish you would compare it more to the X-T3 you reviewed recently because they both announced almost the same time. You'll understand why there's so many drama about this camera.
    While X-T3 packed with so many features for only $1500, this camera doesn't make sense for $2300..way more expensive with less feature, even compare to Z6 or A7iii.
    Doesn't matter if it's full frame because it does a lot of crop anyway..and also the benefit of small sensor like APS-C and M43 like less rolling shutter (one thing you didn't test).
    And for Vlogging, why buy an expensive camera when you can buy M50 with great auto focus, great color and flip screen..for a lot cheaper?!

    • @TJIzzy
      @TJIzzy Před 5 lety +1

      @@kunkelvideography9170 people buying that camera expect the crop and have lenses to accommodate said crop. In this case most users are expecting no crop. Especially considering many users are hybrid users who shoot video and photo often on the same shoot. It would be quite the inconvenience to have to switch lenses on a shoot just to accommodate taking photos or vice versa with video if you're on a shoot where you're doing both at the same time.

    You are messing with the codecs again :) the 400+ mbits on the canon is for ALL-I recording which means that in terms of efficiency it is actually close to the 100-150Mbits longgop codec on the other cameras and the EOS R too. The EOS R has 4K with longgop and I think it was something like 120Mbits.. Correct me if I am wrong :).

    • @SimeonKolev
      @SimeonKolev Před 5 lety +2

      @Matti
      Well it is not only about the Mbits. It depends what type of compression is used there - H264, H265, is it ALL-I or ... the modern and efficient compressions are compressing smart by skipping parts of the frames that are not changing from frame to frame and later in post the computer makes them out. MJPEG is ALL-I compression, the 400+mbits ALL-I is cool too but it is not 4 times better than a modern H264/265 with 100-150Mbits, at least not all the time because there is an algorithm that is hiding the losses. The downside of those modern compressions is the editing time. If your PC is not optimized for playback of this compression it will be quite heavy to work with it. It will be much smaller as a file but harder to edit.
      That was my point - it is not many times better, it is actually pretty close and depends on the footage - if you have a lot of action the ALL-I can be better.

    I’ve tried everything out there and I always end up staying with Canon because of the obvious things like having a flip screen, dual pixel autofocus and amazing (plus consistent) colors. Their products very predictable results, and that’s important when most of your main focus is on the art itself. Time spent troubleshooting is time not... shooting.

      Old reliable(predictable) is nice to have, but sometimes new tech does things old reliable cant do all while leaving a lasting impression. Great colors today come in a simple lut download in todays age for all cameras.
      No wide shots and bokeh in 4K, and no usable 120FPS?...........1080 24 & 60 fps is not gonna wow and leave that lasting impression in 2019 like the new tech will.

      In my years of shooting with just about every camera out there, I can say for certain that specs aren't everything. When you have a crew behind you and every second matters, predictable ends up being more important. Almost every single a7 body I've used overheated on set in under an hour. Nobody cares about 120 FPS at that point, or 4K for that matter. Lasting impressions will come from the creativity of your art, not the camera you use to make it IMO.
      Just my experience.

    • @tooshmart6669
      @tooshmart6669 Před 5 lety +4

      I truly understand your point Jervy. I still shoot with my 6 year old D800e, my 5 year old Tamron 70-200 VC, and Tamron 24-70 VC, plus other D series lenses form the 90's and probably put around 70k+ shots on that combo. Im not gonna sell that kit because image quality is still great and it always works(predictable) even though its a little old. But I am in the market for a mirrorless for more video gigs and silent shooting when needed and would be nice to throw on a money-maker double camera strap and take two bodies into events. So for me I do care about 120FPS for video portraits, and 4-6 minute wedding highlight videos and 4K for the cropability in post and future-proofing, plus I always wanted to look cool with a second body and those sexy leather straps.

Not that i am trying to trash Canon, but saying other brand is not reliable and not predicable is understatement. Just remember BBC use sony a7s for their planet earth, every camera is predictable if you have spend many hours on that particular camera. Nice general review Matti. You used the C300 of the monologue portion?
    However, I was shocked though at how soft all the video from the EOS R was!! Is it just me? I was watching on my 65" oled and IMMEDIATELY noticed the EOS R's image was much softer (similar to the iPhone XS situation) when doing the headshot comparisons (to the Sony and Fuji). ie - Sony and Fuji you could see your pores, Canon looked soft (like a softening filter was applied), lacked detail in the hair, etc. I'm not talking pixel peeping scrutiny - I was sitting on my sofa watching, then jumped up for a closer look. On my laptop, same thing. (thought it was a scaling problem with my TV).
    This seemed exactly the same as on the DPreview video, except the subject was much future away. The face and body seems soft, out of focus.
    I agree, by far the most important thing is image quality (including colour), specs mean nothing without this (look at Arri). I love the colour science as well, but the rest of the specs, and the soft images have me scratching my head. I have high hopes for the new RF mount and the future, but I'm not sure about this camera. I hope Canon doesn't handicap future iterations in fear of cannibalizing higher tier products.
    Keep up the great work Matti.

Possibly Canon engineers are overkilling the wizardry of image manipulation called "color science", and the image details are lost. This exactly what Sean Tucker has explained.

    I think the reason why there’s so much anger towards this camera is because it’s yet another crippled device from the offset. Cropped 4K is just a joke, it’s not like they don’t have the technology - They have the c700 FF, 1dx II heck even 1Dc back in the day, They’re resting on their superior color science and autofocus - but as fujifilm have shown (albeit in an aps-c cam) canons lead is slowly diminishing. How many more years before Sony cracks their color science? If their e mount lenses weren’t so insanely expensive then the fence sitters - like me admittedly - wouldn’t even be giving this attention. Look at how embracing people are for products like the BMPCC4K even though it has many flaws. Ultimately on this evidence, the only genuine 4K AF FF option is A7III.

    • @Ydkoll
      @Ydkoll Před 5 lety +2

      That's why Canon has the largest shares on the market. They play their cards right, even if isn't in the consumer's interest/advantage. They know they have the best color science, they know they have the best articulating screen with fast responsive touch screen and they know they don't have to crop their 4K video either. And in their defense, all "photography" cameras, whether its FF or APS-C, is essentially primarily designed to be a camera with video capabilities at hand. Their philosophy is ..... if you want a camera for video purpose only then turn to pro camcorder or cine line cameras (C200). I think another important issue people tend to forget is how much camera manufacturers are competing with cell phones with great cameras in them and the convenience that goes along with it. When it comes to spec sheets its hard not to judge what a camera is capable of. But lets all keep in mind what a camera should be .... and that is of course, a camera.

    I got to try the R in Copenhagen about a month ago and I cried a little when I had to hand it back. I only got hands on with it for a couple of hours but I was very impressed. For vlogging, I agree that it's the best on the market (flip lcd is everything). Yes, it's lacking 120 and the crop on 4k is annoying but the positives outweigh the negatives in my opinion. It's essentially like an M50 on steroids, which, as an M50 user at the moment, is a good thing 😁 In my opinion, it's the camera to get if you're wanting to go from a crop sensor to full frame and maybe have already invested in canon glass. From what I heard, this is (obviously) just the beginning for the R series. I think there's gonna be some exciting things (especially for vloggers) in the future for the R series! So stoked to get mine next week when it finally lands at Canon Finland 🤘
    P.s. did you use the 16-35 f4 IS or f2.8? I tried it with the f4 but one thing I didn't try was the 2.8 with the digital stabilizer. Wondering if it's worth the extra stop and losing a bit of the frame in the crop.

    I'm not angry with Canon, not since I have now moved on to another camera line and I'm ecstatic about that change. So, I 'was' angry a year ago but after leap to Sony and I'm good to go..
    Yet, as a long, long, long time Canon user, and the frustration they have put their users through, it's still alive in my psyche. Canon has frustrated me to no end and I see this camera and.. well, I guess I should be thankful I changed.
    With this Canon, yes, its a start for Canon and they will improve it eventually. I get that. Yet their track record of leaping forward quickly is not good. As the once "leader" in innovation, they have fallen flat on their laurels. Why support them? Why pay more for a camera that has so many shortcomings compared to the a7III? And if you're into video, Panasonic is also going to kick this Canon to the curb. I look at that new Canon 28-70 f2 and it's $4000 in Canada. That is insanity! And the Canon Filter Adapter with the variable ND is $520 Canadian. It holds a filter!! $200 Max! And it's only good with OLD lenses.. It doesn't work on the new lenses. That's the realityl. Also, No IBIS and that $4000 28-70 has no stabilization either. More Insanity. I just can't imagine getting excited about this camera or the glass. It's shocking... well, I guess it's not a shock. It's typical. I can't, in my right mind, support Canon while they drag their faithful followers through this long drawn out upgrade while so many other camera lines are leaping ahead. Sony had to stop slamming the retail counters with upgrades and advancements, because they are too far ahead now. They are sitting back, building yet another market changer. The a7SIII and an updated a6500 will also kick Canon in the Canon balls.
    Hey, I still love Canon... or should I say, I want to! But I'm not playing their game. It's insanity. A person looking to jump into mirrorless and own a killer system?? the a7III and the Tamron 28-70 f28. For less than the price of the Canon R, with 4 times the kick ass power. I think the R stands for "Really??" Are you kidding me? Lol

Ergonomics look great and it will definitely be a great stills camera, but that's not enough anymore when competitors are pushing to create these great all around hybrid cameras.
      Also, I'm surprised more people haven't brought up the lack of stabilization (in the lenses AND body)... Makes me think they rushed this camera to market (to keep people from leaving) and the next generation will have IBIS.

    For me the best thing about EOS R is really the adapter with ND filter! I may actually move from Canon 80D just because of that feature alone. Also I will be able to use the Sigma 18-35 1.8 for documentary and tripod tutorial videos stuff I usually do without the need of 50fps. Like it! Just wait a little longer until it gets a price drop.

    Such a great honest review. I felt that Peter's review was kinda biased and praising the camera too much but you give your best true opinion the good the bad. Pros and cons.
    Awesome work Matti! Peace :)

    Hi I am a travel vlogger from Alberta Canada. Can anyone tell me or recommend me which Canon SLR is the best for vlogging and videography? Which one is better between 80D and EOS R? And which one has better performance in low light? Is there Canon 90D coming up in 2019? I would be very grateful if anyone advice me here.

    Look how insanly soft the video from the EOS R is compared to Sony A73 during the color/saturation comparison @ 14:56. Many reviewers have claimed that the 4K footage from EOS R has nowhere near acceptable sharpness and detail-level and i can see why. That's awful. Doesn't look like there's any detail past 1080p :/
    The EOS R really is the biggest turd released this year. With no dual card slots, no IBIS, old outdated sensor and that huge 4K crop (that looks more like 1080p) it shouldn't have cost more than $1400-1500 in my opinion.
    The ergonomics, weathersealing and that nifty sensor cover is great though, and those are the main advantages i can see compared to the competition.

      I have to agree im not an expert when it's about fimmaking but I have to say I do like the colors in the eos r more but I think in this comparison the sharpness of the Sony a7 iii is much better im thinking about either getting the Sony or the canon as my first camera

    Awesome review... I noticed Canon Being So much softer than sony and fuji in the comparison video... Your beard is tac sharp on the sony, a little less sharp on the fuji and just blurry on the canon...
    Isn't that an issue???

    Finally someone tested the 17-55 efs on this camera. Was waiting for that to see if this was a good upgrade path for me. Glad to hear it works, but loosing 60p sucks...I may have to wait till I can afford full frame lenses and the camera at the same time. For now I'll stick with my 80d

  • @JonathanThompsonStoryteller

    Hey Matti, really interesting to hear your views after the tidal wave of negativity out there. I tried the EOS R on a Canon UK event and I wasn't expecting to like it. I was pleasantly surprised. Especially how easily I got used to it. The lens ring was really intuitive to me and I loved the screen swipe autofocus point change ability. Dragging my thumb across the screen and the focus point follows. Nice. It's not for everyone and what's interesting to me is where this technology will take them. Low light shooting is a big deal for me, mostly stills at this point, but it's better than the kit I use right now.
    Loving the colours on your footage, super nice. Think it's worth taking a proper look at and I hope to test one out in the near future. One camera to do it all doesn't exist, but I think it comes close for many people, and the colour science makes novice filmmakers, like myself, have a bit of an easier time in post.
    Thanks for your thoughts as always.
    Cheers
    JT

    I have a lower camera Canon M50 but I tried this one as well... and yes I am not happy with the crop. I shoot full frame cameras so I picked M50 mainly for video and vlog so I am super happy with it especially when it comes to price. Canon R is nice but it didn't convinced me enough to invest in that... M50 is just really good for really good price.

    That would be a fit for my style since I am used to my Canon 70D. It is actually a great upgrade in 1080p and still using a canon. I just love canon. I will keep on creating to get the gears I need. Thank you Dope squad for inspiring me to create!
