Great video as always. I’ve been looking at this camera and the Nikon Z6 and the sony a7iii. I want to shoot photos and video. I’m curious about what you didn’t like about the Sony?
thanks:)
@@acrmf Same, I wish @Matt would answer this why he didn't like Sony.
So happy to see opinions changing on the R as people actually use it in real world situations... It is such a joy to use especially in high stress situations...
Wow so now people are starting to realize it's not all about the specs. Nice!
The way you kept looking at the camera throughout, tells you've fallen in love with it :-)
Thank you Matt for take your time to make this video. Your words, your images, inspired me. Thanks aa lot! All my best, Bea
Exceellent, honest review. Having used this camera for the past 13 months, everything you have touched on is exactly what I've experienced.
Now this is a good review. Real user , on the job and additional RAW files to check yourself and not edited images in the video.
I can, by heart, but won't do, mention various "famous or more notorious if you like" You Tubers ( even some Canon fanboys) who can learn SO MUCH from this video.
Matt ........ CHAPEAU buddy !!!
I don't have one, don't need one and not gonna buy one, but the video is very informative !
RS That means a lot to hear that! I really appreciate you saying that. 🙏🏻
i dont give any respect to the ones who dont own.use the gear they review...
@@michaels8597Don't agree . If they have it as loner for a longer period and use it enough, do the ins and outs, and like here , even dare to use it for their work, that is good for me and of course that they are not affiliated to the brand (and participated in BBQ and Company parties , benefits that they probably loose when they speak the truth ) . The problem with reviews from people who own the gear is that if they don't like it, they should probably admit they made the wrong choice and people are not so into doing that.
@@RS-Amsterdam ..
No one has to agree because the fact is,we all have 14-30 days to take the gear through it's paces and take it right back to the store. We can also rent, and do the same thing, yet the thing is,you have to be familiar enough to make an intelligent accessment.
For example, I spoke to this moron days ago,who told me that Sony didnt meet expectations with the A9/9ii upgrade.Like I told him, unless Sony themselves made documented promises, anyone's expectations are purely personal.I told him that just because a new version of a camera comes out, that doesnt mean they needed to make a new sensor.I told him that if he personally doesnt need what the A9/A9ii contributes,it has nothing to do with him anyway.
Of course,as I already figured he never even owned the original A9 to even have a reference point, and he was unable to back up his statements about 'expectations' with any evidence.See,only a small percentage of shooters even make a living shooting on a professional level,as in NBA/NFL,Apple,Cosmo,or even celebrity events.
The rest of us just buy what we enjoy and can make a bit of money with.I dont care what anyone's connections are,as long as they are not outright lying about gear, which is easy to check.Like you said, for example with the Z6/7,you have these people who bought it,and then babble about workarounds, because as you said, they refuse to admit they didnt get what they thought the camera was about. They defend the 1 card slot, the poor AF,and they even defend the 2 recalls, never wanting to admit they paid for a $3000 miss.
@@michaels8597 Agreed 100% with your latest statement, my point was that one does not have to own a camera to do a review, bit sense about what and where it is all about is welcome though. And indeed some use them 3 days and jibber jabber a lot of BS that is not much more than reading the user manual added with some info from the tech sheets. But being around on YT for a while, you know the BS guys from the real deal. Still follow some of the BS guys just for laugh and rattling the cage with some serious comments on their wrong believes ;-)
Never the less , New here and Matt has positively surprised me with the video's I have seen so far.
You have convinced me this camera is for me. I was on the fence with another brand, but your enthusiasm convinced me. Thanks!!!
I just bought it today from B&H for $1299!
My question made it in there! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Canon Eos R. I think I would definitely get one if I was in the market for an SLR type camera. Appreciate your honesty as always in how you review cameras 👍🏻
Bought mine in Mach 2019 and I absolutely love it.
One of the most honest reviews I’ve seen thus far. 🙏🏼
loved this review. I just bought this camera today :) and as a newbie...I'm nervous about using it but loved how well you explained everything . thanks you!!!
THANK YOU!!! I have watched many videos trying to decide if I should by this camera and your video is the only one that broke down all of the pros and cons in a way that made sense.
Congrats mate. Since they announced the R system I have it on my goal list. Glad your experience was awesome. Think the RF road-map is brilliant and gives me confidence
The biggest thing keeping me glued to my Fuji kit is my left eye dominance.
I've always used the X-Pro, X-E and X100 lines because of the off center viewfinder.
When I tried the X-T2 I felt like my hands were smushed because of how close the viewfinder was to the right side of the camera, and that's inherent to any SLR style body.
The guy who actually shot my engagement is a friend of mine, and he let me play around with the EOS-R raw files and I can attest, the image quality is fantastic.
I'm a strong believer that any modern kit is fantastic image quality-wise and ergonomics should determine the camera you shoot with but at the same time I'm a realist. I know that physics is physics, and an APS-C sensor is never going to match the image quality of full-frame. For what I do though, I feel like Fuji is still the right balance of image quality vs size vs price.
I agree with you on the grip on Fuji Cameras, and I wouldn't even consider using any of my camera without a thumb grip on it. That was a game changer.
I love my Fuji gear, but not in a tribal way. It just happens to be the right combination of assets for my needs, even if I'm aware of all of its shortcomings.
I've already accepted the inevitability that someday I'm going to auction off a few of my organs to by a digital Leica M though.
Well said, man! Everyone has a system that fits their needs best or just makes them want to shoot.
the most practical review i've seen in a long time
This is a great review and makes me happy with my purchase in spite of some earlier reviews that it turns out weren’t really relevant to my shooting.
Hands down one of the best reviews on YT for this camera. I´m a Fuji shooter myself but I have to say that I´m on the fence of jumping systems and this EOS R is up there near the top of my list. Anyway, is always nice to hear your honest opinion. Take care and stay safe!
Nice review Matt. I’ve been considering this for my next upgrade and this has given me a good insight. Thanks
Thanks for the great review Matt and btw, you're a really good photographer.
I really enjoyed your review on the EOS R. I have owned mine since about a month after it came out and I was very hesitant to buy after the reviews that were out on it. I started with Canon all the way back in the 80's. I had a 5D Mark 4 and kept it until I was sure I would like the EOS R. After about 6 weeks, I tried using my 5D4 and I just didn't like it anymore compared to the EOS R. So sold it and absolutely love my EOS R.
Thanks,
I really enjoy your videos and honest opinions.
Great long form video. Smooth speaking and transitions. Constant good info mixes with your interpretation. I just ordered one a couple of hours ago to pair with my a7riii. Eos R will be my daily/people/vlog setup and the r3 for landscape/architecture/real estate interiors. Excited to get it in. Following your channel. Thanks!
great images Matt. I am very sure such great images are bcz of you and not just camera and lens. Great editing and compositions as always !!!
Sami Thank you!
Great shots man!!! Fellow EOS R owner and I agree with everything you said.
Hi Matt, thank you for your thoughts!
Its nice to hear about how people use equipment and not all about the gear.
Hi Matt, What a great review and so good to hear some hands on comments from someone using the eos r both professionally and personally. Also, I love your photos!
Love this! The RF 50mm is hands down the best lens in the system.
Alex Barrera Your take on the camera and lens really helped push me over the edge, man!
I just realized that you've mentioned before that you're not really a fan of the 50mm focal length so you loving that RF 50mm so much means even more than what I previously thought
The Dead Immortal I’m not a fan of the 50mm focal length on a rangefinder. On an SLR, that’s always been my preferred focal length.
I think I prefer the 85 RF 😊
I think the 85 is the best one
Thank you for the honest review! I really enjoyed this and really gave me some clarification. Thank you again!
Thanks!!! Very well done when it comes to a review of this camera.
Thank you for your review. I already bought my new eos R and I loved it.
I held one for a minute at the PHOTOPLUS expo. Fell in love instantly. Great review Matt!

Man, I’ve held off on thinking about buying this camera for so long in hopes of just waiting out until the next version, but this video has got me thinking this might be my CZcams camera moving forward. As always, thanks for being super genuine and honest, man!
Eric Floberg It’s honestly been so great for CZcams. It’s been a perfect hybrid camera for me.
It's the perfect hybrid camera period.
Good, honest review from a real, working photographer. Thanks Matt! I'm a Fuji XH1 shooter but the Canon EOS R caught my eye since its announcement. If I had the extra money I'd go that route for sure. Happy with my XH1 for what I need it to do, though :) Keep it up!
Great comprehensive review and consistent with my experience with the camera. A few thoughts:
The "screen" that covers the sensor is actually the shutter. I love that function, but critics do point out that it may make the shutter susceptible to damage.
On the "touch bar" I've set it for: Swipe - AF mode, Left tap - eye detect on/off, Right tap - histogram on/off. No complaints. I'm not sure why it gives people the grumps.
I'm right-handed, but a left-eyed shooter. Even so, my nose on the screen has not been a problem for me. I suppose in part I apparently have a suitably-sized nose. :-) I also wear glasses, so that likely keeps my face a bit further back.
Same for me, no problems, left eye shooter who wears glasses
Definitely my first on your channel. I am doing research on the EOS R
Thanks for this review! I've been shooting with the Canon Rebel T4i for almost five years. Hoping to upgrade to the EOS R in 2020. Fingers crossed!
same
Non-biased goes w/o saying when it comes to your thoughts about gear Matt; thank you! This is giving me some serious thinking and planning to do.. in a good way
Dark Invadah I’m glad to hear that! Thank you. ❤️
I rarely watch 20 minute videos, but I did here. Very well-made and well done. Keep up the good work!
Great video Matt , i have just purchased the Eos R , i think it is amazing and the glass is mind blowing , many thanks.
Dude, thank you for the honest review. Very informative, in regards to the things you can’t just read on a spec sheet. Canon really seems to be going in an awesome direction, especially considering this is their first serious mirrorless offering, and it’s already this good. It’s an exciting time to be a photographer! I’d love to try one out for myself sometime.
Great Camera. I bought one back in August and it has exceeded my expectations! I’m a real estate photographer and have already put 15,000 pictures through it. It’s an amazing camera.
Thank you for your honest review of this Canon Camera! I enjoyed your opinion.
Thx for your review and share the RAW files with us. I want to chance from my GH5 to the EOS R. This Vid helped me a lot!
Great review buddy, thanks for the sample images link.
Subscribed!! Glad I found this channel. I used to watch Peter McKinnon but he has changed in alot of ways. You seem pretty straight to the point, honest, humble, and enterraining!!
That was what I needed. Thank you also for the RAW files!! Could you include c-log files too? 😉
Have been using the 90D, just purched the EOS R. The adapter was separate. The weather has not been cooperative lately, but can't wait to get out and use the R. Great video, by the way.
Happy to see canon making a comeback.
You are very brave to be so honest! Kudos.
This is a totally great review. First review I have seen Matt do. Matt is a real wedding photographer pro. and he gives a realistic assessment of the good and bad of the EOS R with RF24-105mmf4 and the RF50f1.2 lenses in his usages. He loves the camera and lenses despite no dual flash cards and IBIS. He left the Fuji which he loved but simply loves the EOS R more and has no intention of going back. He was surprised by how useful the flipout screen was and how long the battery life was in comparison to his prior Fujis. Not you typical review and I am going to have to tune some of the the video Matt has done.
Nice review Matt. I have been a long time Canon film and DSLR user but like you I also turned to Fuji for mirrorless and shot with the Xpro-2 and lots of really good Fuji glass. However, I always missed the Canon colour rendition and I purchased my EosR a few weeks after seeing it at Photokina last year. I have loved using it and it is now my goto camera for just about everything and I have new reluctantly sold all my Fuji gear. My only non Canon digital camera now is my Olympus Pen-F which I use for street photography. Keep up the good work and if you're ever in Scotland look me up.
I’m glad you’re enjoying your new camera. I added the Panasonic S1R as my personal project camera but still use Sony FE cameras for my pro kit. I really like the RF lenses but I couldn’t get along with the current EOS R bodies. Really aren’t many bad choices in cameras these days. I just encourage people to get them in their own hands to see how each fits them.
Excellent Honest Review Matt! Thanks my friend!!!!!

Just bought the cam and this made me feel better. I can't wait to make this my B Cam with the RED Komodo!
I really love the touch bar now. I set it to change between two af modes. Right now I have face+eye tracking swiping over to single point af and right tap mapped to change the singe point af size. This works great with Backlit portraits where eye af wont find the face or eye. Swipe instantly over to single point and get the shot without fumbling around. Also mapped the lock button to only lock the touch pad.
Fantastic video. Great to see and hear real world shooting and not just complaining about specs. I don't shoot video ever and I don't care about 2 card slots so this camera might be a great fit for me as I already have Canon glass. Feels like a perfect upgrade from my trusty Canon 80D.
I have been waiting for this review from you since you mentioned you had made the switch. I’m also glad that you can confirm what I said to you in a comment I posted regarding the canon files being far better and cleaner than the XT3 and even the GFX too.
Great non biased review as always Matt.
Thanks you.
PS I will probably switch back to Canon at some point, but I won’t until 2x cars slots, ibis and hopefully a joystick. (I’m a left eye shooter)
Jason Wilkinson The files really are impressive. Glad you enjoyed the video. Hopefully we’ll see that flagship body sooner than later!
Cleaner than the GFX files? Now I'm curious.
Dude, definitely get the grip! When I got it, it took the already great shooting experience and made it significantly better. Both for photo and video. Also, two batteries in the grip last FOREVER lol
Nice one Matt! I'm happy to hear about your experience with the camera. I picked one up a few months ago after some major hesitation due to heeding the warnings of the popular youtubers. I started to notice they all turned the corner & were using the camera themselves. Haha. I find that my EF lenses work better adapted to this camera than they have on any of my previous bodies. I also highly suggest grabbing an R to M adapter, preferably one with the helicoid. It is pretty special to use Summicrons & other leica lenses on this body! Enjoy dude!
Riley Smith Ohh, that would be fun to try out! I’ll see if I can try one out soon. And I agree, I’m seeing more and more people trying it out now. It had a bit of a rocky start. Haha.
the photos of molly are especially beautiful!
Great review, Matt. Best part? Amazing #NoraDay photos!
(Also very nice to see Molly with a mischievous smile at 18:31. She usually looks SO intense!).
I just picked up the EOS R with the 24 to 105 f4 kit lens....I love it so far.
Thanks for the video. Your straight to the point and clear communicator. That 50mm is beast! 😳 I hope canon releases a RF nifty 50 this year like 1.4 or something
Pretty much agree with every single word said here :-)
I feel exactly the same way about my EOS R, it's just such a joy to use! Gives me the same excited feeling I remember from using the original 5D back in the day. I was very apprehensive about switching to mirrorless and still use DSLRs too, but I'm so happy I decided to go for the EOS R as my main camera.
Great review. I’m on Olympus and Sony right now (different tools for different purposes), but boy did I like that Canon camera when I picked it up and tested it out. They have indeed done a good job with menus and the touch interface. I’ve also become a big fan of the flippy screen (Olympus similar to this Canon) even for stills photography. Especially portrait orientation.
Good review. I have looking at this as an upgrade to my Canon 80D
I use the control ring for exposure compensation. Nice feature.
The camera's electronic sensor stabilization works well for video.
I’m new. I do a lot of broll with my 6D MK II. I’m looking to get this EOS R. I appreciate your review and I subbed. Thank you. Can’t wait to get it.
Hey man, did you buy the camera?
Trend ترند I am still using than Canon EOS 6D Mark II. I decided to hold off on the EOSR for now. Wondering if they going to have a EOSR MK II.
Trend ترند here’s a video I just shot over the weekend.

Thanks for the feedback. I was wondering if i should sell my canon 6D mark ii and replace it with the EOS R
@@A12Diary I just bought an EOS R to use in tandem with my 6D mark ii
I just got this camera and lens combination used.. omg what a lens! I agree with you. Regarding one one SD card, just have the camera upload the image to your phone so you can have a back up.
You're gonna love the 15-35mm for its IS. :)
I love fuji I also started with the very original X100 then moved to the Xt1 then left Fuji for Sony. We use the A7Rii and the Canon Eos R for film production and the EOS R produces beautiful cinematic quality footage. Great review .)
Just a use for the touchbar on the EOS R. I use mine for ISO. Makes it great having ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed within quick, easy access. I also, have never used the control ring.
Great review. Definitely looking at one of these for next year. Curious, do you shoot film at weddings too? Why or why not?
Thank you for the amazing help!!!
I picked up an EOS R with the battery grip & basic EF lens adapter awhile back & use my EF lenses rather than immediately investing in RF glass. I've also adapted my Leica lenses, FD lenses & even T & M42 mount lenses for the EOS R. I still have the XT-2 I bought from you and shoot with it on a regular basis, but being a long term Canon shooter I tend to gravitate back to the Canon. The EOS R was an upgrade for my 5D Mk III (I still have it) which is why I hesitate to upgrade my lenses to the RF line. Everything I've shot with the EOS R has really impressed me! My only complaint about the EOS R is that stupid touch bar on back. I'd much rather have a joystick than the bar. In fact, I've disabled all functions on the touch bar. Glad to hear you like the EOS R since you've never really used Canon before. I switched from Nikon to Canon way back in the 1980's and I've been happy with them ever since even though I really enjoyed shooting with Nikon as well. Cameras are ultimately just tools we use to accomplish our photographic vision. We shouldn't get too hung up on what's newest or has the best specs. Just get out and shoot 100-200 images a week and you'll master whatever you've got. Great video!
Coming from a 20 year Canon user who also switched to Fuji (after Sony), it's nice to see Canon making a comeback!
Thanks man, I'm a Canon user, but I was torn between Sony and Fuji as a lot of my friends here convert to Sony, but after watching this video and play a bit with the files you're shared, I'm glad I don't have to sell all my Canon system...... 😇👌👍👍👍
Great review! Thank you so much.
Excellent and honest review, I am a newbie, trying to decide which cam to purchase, as I plan on doing some professional work with whichever cam I end up buying. So far, the EOS R is looking good! However, will continue to research a bit more to come to a peaceful conclusion. Thanks so much!
Great video man, just got mine from B&H!
8:22 - You mean the shutter? :D I love my EOS R as well. It's perfect for my style of shooting.
Had mine for 5 Days, Not used it in anger yet but already love the feel of it (got the battery grip as well)
I anyone is a left eye shooter (like me) and is having issues with your nose moving the focus point on the LCD screen, you can disable the focus swipe on the right side of the screen. I have found this solves the problem 90% of the time.
I had the same issue and went into setting to switch the side of the LCD that responds to touch. I also just flip the screen around or turn it off completely.
I do the same or flip the screen out to the side
Great video Matt! I have it myself I didn't like it the first days but then got used to it and now I really like it. It´s a different beast even compared to Canon 5D MKIV with all the features and it takes som work to get used to. Fantastic customizations possibilities close to GH5. Interesting to hear your views on the Fuji. Sorry for complaining but is it possible not have that flashing frames at the transitions, just hard mentally to have it flashing. Great work, keep it up : )
Superb review Matt! Much more meaningful than the talking heads on YT trashing the EOS-R when it was first announced. I’m curious if you’ve scanned film with this yet, and how that compares to the process you had in place with the Fuji?
Also have you tried adapting any M lenses to it yet? I love my Fujifilm cameras! However adapting my film lenses to them always introduces a crop factor, I like the idea of having a full frame sensor so that the FOV remains consistent and I can use a film and digital body with the same lenses. At the moment I’m trying an M240 but I’m not blown away by it, also it’s only useful for adapting rangefinder lenses, my SLR lenses I’m still using the Fuji. Keen to hear your thoughts on it... and apologies for the long message. Haha!
In case someone did not catch it earlier the EOS RA astronomy camera has the IR filter removed, all cameras not for astronomy have one on top of the sensor (when you are cleaning the sensor your realy cleaning the filter not the sensor).
love my eos r! Great vid
Hi.I got this camera about 3 month and this is the best camera for me.I m shooting only manual.Focus and all settings best camera for professional controls.
Great review. Thank you!
coming from a 5Ds, the Eos R is a game changer for me. sooooo much easier to use, so many more images in focus, so many more shots to choose from. glad I stuck with canon when everyone else bailed.
Awesome, welcome to the EOS R life. In my opinion it's easily the best photography camera on the market. There is just something special about how that RF mount catches light from the lens. Images have bit of a lifelike 3D feel to them. It's hard to explain but once you notice it you can't un-notice it. I'll give you a few tips on shooting with the EOS R. In my experience Canon and Lexar don't always play nice. If a card is going to fail in a Canon camera it's most likely going to be a Lexar. Not sure why that is but I stick to sandisk and never had an issue. Also for your vlogging check out Canon's EFS 10-18mm. It's designed for APC-C sensors but with the adapter that comes with the EOS R you can use it on your camera. Because it's designed for a crop sensor it works perfectly with the EOS R's 4k crop video. Plus it has in lens image stabilization and a plastic build so it can be used handheld and you'll never get a tired arm holding it up. I'll be making a review of it on my channel soon. Hope that helps. Cheers.
Nice review Matt! Another great thing about Canon (for me at least) is that if you're used to shooting 6x4.5 film and/or don't like 3:2 in portrait orientation, you can shoot in 4:3 aspect ratio in camera without needing to crop afterward. I love this feature - combined with a 50mm f/1.2 it looks so much like 645 120!

Over a year later and I have to say I agree with the image quality compared to my X-T4. I really love what Canon has done with the firmware updates and the lenses. I hated Canon before this camera. LOL I really love it and now my Fuji gear is going away. Not a fan of the R6 and the R5 is waaaay to expensive for my needs. Pricing is even better now. for the R ;)
Awesome video!! Super helpful!! I'm probably going to buy this camera based on your excellent review. What tripod do you use with this camera? If you ever use a tripod... I'm wondering what tripod would work with this camera?
Great content bro 🤙🏾💯
I sold my 6D 24-105 and tamron 15-30 for a used r with rf 24-105 l for a really low price. It's taking a moment to customize and become familiar with, but it's also growing on me a lot.One thing with the RF 24-105 and the back cap for the lens, theres less tactile information for either lining up the cap on the lens or lining up the lens with the body, I take a lot of night photos so it matters if I can change a lens by feel.
i'm not jumping on the mirrorless bandwagon for maybe another 1-2 years, just got 90D to play with and loving it !:)
Every-time i pick up this camera i'm just excited to shoot with it; this is the real answer you guys are looking for. pick a camera that will push you to take beautiful photos.
I switched from canon to Fuji shortly before the R came out. I like Fuji, but miss my Canon. Wasn’t sure about the R but may have to rethink. Thanks for your input.
Hi Matt. What picture profile do u use for photos? Did u apply a lut for this video? Both photos and video looks really good. Great content, thank you.
