- čas přidán 19. 06. 2024
- In today's video, we're talking about the Canon EOS R in 2024 and whether it's a good camera to buy. Spoiler the Canon EOS R is a fantastic camera for photographers and the value for money is amazing. If you're thinking of buying the EOS R in 2024 I'd say it's a great investment. This is a camera you can build a photography business around and make money with. If you're a new photographer ready to start your photography journey, the EOS R is a great option. It has a really good sensor from the 5D Mark IV and decent autofocus features for shooting people and events. The best thing about the EOS R in 2024 is the price. It keeps dropping so you're getting a great deal on a camera with a professional sensor.
Although the EOS R has a few quirks when it comes to making videos, the overall video quality you can get with it is really good. If you add an external recorder, you can do some beautiful 10bit footage.
With its great sensor and a price that won't break the bank, the Canon EOS R is going to be a really popular choice in the used camera market. So, if you want a camera that takes awesome pictures without costing a ton, don't miss out on this one!

Thanks for watching. What do you think of the EOS R? I have more content including photo samples with the EOS R on the blog. www.vaskoobscura.com/blog/category/EOS+R
People sleep on this camera! I’ve owned it since 2019 for my photography business. It’s an amazing piece of gear. I really appreciate the love and effort you put into this video. Subscribed!
It really is! And thank you for the Sub. Welcome to the channel glad to have you here.
Agreed. I bought one couple months ago. Basically new for way less than the cheapest current full frame. More MPs than anything in Canons lineup other than the R5 I can’t afford, plus all the advantages of modern mirrorless. An admittedly useless Touch Bar but hey, we can switch it off. And an actual top plate to boot! Just excellent.
@@bramverhees755 and honestly I don’t see camera tech advancing so much that the R will become useless.
@@bramverhees755 i use the touch bar for scrolling photos in preview 😅
Hi Vasko. I haven't even watched this before I got my used EOS R last week, but I fully agree with everything you said on this video about EOS R. I sold most of my old EF gear along with half of my pristine primes to get mine with 30k shutter count. But boy do I love it. I haven't been taking much photos lately. With a toddler, it is hard to pick up my 6D on the go. I just use my phone, because it is just there, in my pocket, 100% of the time. And to be honest, phone cameras have come a long way since I got my 6D (mark 1) some many years ago. But in the meanwhile, all my camera gears in the bag was just sitting there gathering dust. So I thought it was time I got myself a new camera. I've been looking at EOS R10 for a long time, very affordable, compact enough to be carried everywhere, has super fast autofocus and continuous shooting. I tossed between R10 and a secondhand 6D II for obvious reasons (which by the way, is not easy to come by or cheap by any means). I have very briefly thought about getting R7 instead of R10, which looked really good in paper, and then stumbled upon the full frame R8. And that's where EOS R came in. I just couldn't go to R7, for the crop factor, as all my EF lenses (or what's left of it now), was suited for full frame focal length. And R8's poor battery meant that it wasn't really suited for me on the go. Oh, talking about the battery life though, do you know what I also love about EOS R? It's the battery. I can use my old batteries from 6D on it, which saves me hundreds of dollars on buying new extra batteries of EOS R10 or R8.
I remember when EOS R first came out back in 2018, it was NOT a camera people raved about in anyway. It was the single memory card slot, the multifunction slide button thingy (as opposed to a joystick), the autofocus (since improved with firmware update, I hear) etc etc. I certainly wasn't interested in buying one then. But in 2024, 5D IV sensor and the eye detect dual pixel autofocus at a very 'affordable' price (second hand) is surprisingly very attractive all of a sudden. I love how it feels on my hand, I love the touch screen, I love that literally all the buttons can be customised. I have only had EOS R for just a few days, and haven't even had a chance to take it out on a shoot, but I am hoping it will spark a new light in me to want to go out and take more photos of my extremely fast growing toddler.
By the way, if you must know, I sold Canon 24mm II f/1.4, Sigma Art 35mm f/1.4, Sigma Art 50mm f/1.4, among few others to get my hands on EOS R. I kept all my EF zoom lenses Canon 17-40mm f/4, Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8, Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 And just ONE prime lens remains with me now, Canon 85mm f/1.2 (mark 1) - I loved this lens so much back in the days, I just couldn't part with it, and I am glad I didn't. It somehow seems to focus better, more accurately, faster than I remember with 6D. I know, I shouldn't have sold all those primes, because I absolutely love them all still, but with a toddler, I just can't justify going out with a suitcase full of lenses, and if I am going to go out, I will not be going out with a single 35mm lens on the body, or even two lenses, 24mm and 50mm, because it will take me too long to change the lens, I will miss the shot. I will choose 24-70 f/2.8 any day for it's versatility.
Love your work. Keep making these great videos. Just about to check out your EOS R menu settings video from a year ago, although, I have already watched someone else's earlier in the week (that's how CZcams generated an algorithm and directed me to your videos) and I think I have it set up to my liking now, but you never know what you don't know. So, see you in your next video.
Thanks for that detailed comment. Having the batteries really does help and firmware updates have really helped make the camera a lot better. Also the EOS R's shutter is rated for 200k shots so you still have lots of shots to go. That 85mm f1.2 is also a beauty I would not have sold that either. Thanks for the positive feed back and the comment. Welcome to the channel. I have a lot more EOS R content on my blog including photos. I'll see you in the comments again sometime.
Sounds like a great overview. I'm replacing a 15-year old 1DS Mark III (RIP) so I need a full frame replacement. I tried one out from a local camera club member who is selling it. Gotta get used to the controls on it. Images seem to be really good.
Great video! Love it! If shooting tethered, there is no need for extra slots. Also you can back up wirelessly to a tablet from the Eos R.
yes this is true. I should have mentioned that in the video. I totally forgot to mention that. Thanks for the comment.
The best CZcams video I have ever seen. Vasko knows what he is talking about and I could understand his English. Thanks
Thanks man appreciate the comment glad you enjoyed the video. Welcome to the channel if it's your first time here.
Awesome vids as always! Just have a question, thinking of using this for music photography(small gigs, bars, etc)? Not big prod concerts just yet.
No budget for the R5/6 yet but thinking of this or the R7.
Buy that R. And also good lens with big aperture.
If you’re shooting in low light full frame is the way to go. R or R8 would be good. You might even be able to find an original R6 at a good price used. Also as Jani said fast prime lenses will help a lot.
Love the video. Would you help recommend a better option from eos r. I was looking at the sony a7c ii. I need a camera specifically for video. What do u think? I also own a canon 35mm like the one on
If you are looking for better video features,a7cII is absolutely better option,
EOS R8
Thanks for showing love, to the R!
Any time! The EOS R is an awesome camera.
I've been using the EOS R camera with the RF 28-70 2.0 as my main lens for 4 years now. Love everything about it! Yes I miss focus here and there but that's not too big a deal. I'm looking to do more video now and I still find it hard to dump money into something else. R8 has peeked my interest a bit, but I don't think I'll be able to deal with the small body and battery. Would you recommend an upgrade at this point or no?
I'm still shooting with an R, and as a Photographer it does everything I need it to, but moving into more video looking into possibly picking up the Sony FX30, or FX3
That FX3 is a tempting camera. It shoots some really nice video. Only thing to keep in mind is that the Sony color science is different from Canon's so if you're using both cameras for a project you might have to spend more time than you want to lining up the colors so they match. If you want to go Sony an A74 might be a better choice so you can do photo and video. Thanks for the comment.
Was thinking on changing my R for R6mkii. I’ll save money and use it to travel instead, thanks for such a sober overview
Thanks for the comment. The R6mkII has better AF. If you're shooting birds, cars or sports it would be a smart upgrade.
you already rocking mines for two years now! 💯
Nice. It's an amazing camera I'm sure you're getting some amazing content with it. Thanks for the comment.
Outstanding genuine assesment. Thank you.
Very welcome. Thanks for the comment.
I just bought this never used for $800.00. Can’t wait to shoot with it.
Nice that's a great deal.
I agree with you on the feel/funness of using the R. I have the R8 and had the R6M2 but the R has the absolute BEST grip and overall feel to it. LOVE LOVE LOVE shooting with this camera and plan on keeping it mainly for that reason alone.
Totally 100% agree. There really is something special about that R.
I have the R10 and love it but thinking about getting the R. Do you think it’s a huge upgrade or worth it ? I mainly do sports photography and some portraits.
The R will have better image quality for sure but the R10 has a better AF system so it should be better at tracking people who are moving around quickly. For sports the R isn't great. The R6II or R8 might be your best bet if you want to go full frame and shoot sports.
Interesting things you said about PMO lenses. All the way I was looking for compact zoom lenses. I tried several EF 70-300 zoom lenses under $1000, but they weren't sharp enough even at f/8. I recently got an RF 100-400. And it's amazing when you compare it to the EF lenses I've tried in the past. It is dark, but quite sharp and gives good contrast. I use it for bird photography. And this is a good choice.
So I don't think it's PMO technology that makes lenses worse. Most likely, you need to study a specific lens, test it and draw conclusions on a specific model.
As for the Canon R, it's an amazing camera. I bought it new in 2022. Photography is my hobby, and I can’t imagine a better camera for the hobby than the Canon R.
I came to your channel looking for information on whether it’s worth replacing this camera with a more expensive one, but so far I don’t see why I should pay $1000 above. I photograph landscapes, architecture, sometimes people and birds. This camera is more than enough for this.
Thank you for the information and good luck!
the new update has made the eye focus much more efficient, also. i really love this camera.
The EOS R really is amazing. I'm still enjoying it all these years later.
Man, thanks for this great video and review! You helped me a lot to make a decision which camera will be my upgrade. Yup, it will be Canon EOS R ;)
Glad I could help! Thank you for the comment really appreciate it. You're going to love the images you get with the R. Congrats on the new camera.
@@vaskoobscura_ I'm sure i'll love it especially cuz i wanted to buy 5dm4, but thing that turned me off is that it doesn't have articulate screen and that's the thing i really like at my (current) Canon 70d and it helps a lot. When i saw that R has it, plus 5dm4 sensor... That's it, the end of the story :) :)
Good review, a commenter below mentioned this too: there're 3 types of viewers. 😎
Hey man happy new year. Hope things are going well for you. You're tight the existing users are the third type. lol. The EOS R is still awesome in 2024.
Very Good review 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you appreciated.
I own the r6 I know no one who ever had a failing sd card. Its mire likely that the camera falls in water all togehter and the images are gone or the canera drops with the Lens. Which means pros should always run two bodies there is your backup
I did not know about the acrylic lens elements in the new RF lenses! Thanks! I still love my 50mm 1.8 RF lens its phenomenal value and my images are nice and crispy. Not as 3D as the 1.2 models but nonetheless a good value for a native lens.
That 50mm f1.8 is great value for money. It's a true nifty fifty. I recently picked up the 50mm f1.8 so I can make some videos about it for the channel. Stay tuned.
I use my EOS R with Atomos Ninja V = C log 10 bit 4.2.2 - no time limit no over heating amazing image
100% That is a great combo. When you put the Ninja V on there it's like a mini cinema camera. Image quality is amazing.
this guy deserves a sub!
Thanks man appreciate it. Glad you liked the video.
Or there are 3 types of viewers, the 3rd being people that already own the EOS R (me) and wanting to hear if it still stands up to the more expensive newer cameras. I keep looking to upgrade it but can't afford the R5 and don't think the others offer more than than EOS R does. Except maybe some animal eye tracking
Your comment is pretty much exactly how I feel too. The only thing I wish the EOS R had is auto focus stacking. 😎
@@TC_Conner Canon could have made so much more of this camera with firmware updates. I'm sure focus stacking would have been a simple upgrade.
@@peteg330 Agree. 👍
You're right I should have mentioned that. There are a lot of happy EOS R users out there. If I wasn't in the position of being a CZcamsr looking to make videos about gear I would have never bought the R5. I would be perfectly happy running my business and shooting photos for clients with the EOS R. It really produces impressive images. If Canon had given it all the firmware updates we all wanted I don't think anybody would be buying the new cameras. Really appreciate the comment. Cheers to the EOS R users.
Have been really close to pulling the trigger on the new R8 used for 1100$ ish, but the Eos R EVF and Battery keep me coming back. I do wish the stickiness of the AF was a little better in low light and with models with glasses but its just not a deal breaker yet for me.
It really is a tough call. Both cameras are great. The one advantage the R8 has is resale value. If you decide to sell the R8 in a year or so it will probably be worth more than the R. In the end honestly good photos come from your creativity the camera just captures the moment you create so don't stress about it too much just get a camera shoot and have fun :)
EOS R is a Photo Beast! If you are a "Photographer" and dont need 4k 60 or IBIS please don't pass this one up. Canon Colors are amazing and the eye/face AF is still VERY GOOD. The EVF (important!) and screen is still unmatched at this price point. Cheers.
All good points for sure 100% agree. Thanks for all your comments. I working hard to grow the channel and all the comments are really appreciated. Thank you.
I'm a Canon DSLR shooter (APS-C and full-frame) who has an R50 (for vlogging and talking head) and is considering adding a reasonably-priced full-frame mirrorless to the stable. The R is my top candidate. The two card slots thing seems overrated. When we all shot film, our only backup was a second camera. With digital, we still have that option.
The EOS R would give you a nice upgrade in video and photo quality for sure. I haven't had any issue with the single card slot. I don't worry about it at all. Thanks for the comment.
Would you recommend the R over RP ? just need a photo camera for client work
Thanks for the question. If I had to choose between the two I would take the R for the simple reason that the R shutter is rated for 200k shots and the RP is only rated for 100K shots. The R will be a serviceable camera for a lot longer.
@@vaskoobscura_ Appreciate the response , i was just about to pull the trigger on the R8 actually do you think it makes more sense to get that camera now vs the R as a photo camera specifically? I already have two fujifilm cameras that are competent for video work
I m now using my second R. First R:s shutter was good near 400k shots! R sensor is much better than rp:s. R is hellkinda money/quality!
I have not used the R8 but from what I hear it’s a good camera. It does use the smaller batteries so you should probably pickup some extra batteries with the new body.
Hi I have had the R for 3 years but never used video 😆 🤣 but still learning ... I was thinking about trading up to r7/r8/r62 or r52 ...lol😂
For the af tracking ...birds and cars 🚗 any advice?
Wait r52 as I have all rf L glass ,14-35F4, 24-105 f4 and 100-500 L f7.1
Personally I don't see the R7, R8 R62 as big upgrades over the R. But they all have the bird and car detect AF feature so maybe for you they are a good upgrade. The R7 has an APS-C sensor so it makes all your lenses longer with the APS-C crop. So that might be a good option for bird photography. If you want to stay with full frame the EOS R5 price will drop this summer when the R52 comes out. Or if you want the R52 I'm sure that will be an amazing camera when it's released. Hope that helps.
@@vaskoobscura_ thanks I will wait for the r1 to come out and see what r5 prices are like and probably wait for the r52 and buy it and borrow R7 to see what that’s like … just I was looking at photo special web had R7 for €1400 and R8@€1600 , I had a d400 then D5m2 and lots of lpe6 batteries
Love my EosR unfortunately I tried to fix my sd card slot myself and ended up doing damage to main board. 😢 it’s been down for 5 months
Oh man that's a tragic story. Well good news is the EOS R price keep falling. You could probably find a cheap one for parts on eBay and to a swap. Thanks for the comment.
Who is this camera for? Well let me add my reasons why I am currently in the market for a used one. a) I need a digital back for my Leica M and Minolta MD lenses. b) I need a tool to digitise/scan my negatives using an old but sharp macro lens. c) to replace my Canon 6D.
Canon RF 16mm 2.8 is a great option for native lens if you want to shoot in 4k with the crop.
For sure. That 16mm is the perfect lens if you're shooting with a crop. I believe it becomes a 27mm with the crop which is a very useful focal length. Thanks for the comment.
i bought r62 to upgrade my eos r,then i compared this two cams image quality ,i couldn't tell the difference. But i am going to take pics for my children, eos r 's afc system always lost focus,R62 seems much more reliable.
thx for yr vid.
The R62 has a much improved AF system. Glad you enjoyed the video. Welcome to the channel I appreciate the comment.
I prefer the rustic look out of the R, seems better for wedding photography and cinematic video look without a lot of edit needed
We need more of those pro sensor and mid range features at a low price
Agreed. Thanks for the comment.
I love my R!
It's still an amazing camera. Hard to believe it's still Canon's second highest resolution mirrorless camera after all these years. lol
Hi Vasko, i have the eosR now for 4 years and use it for everything also stream with de R and only i mis the krop so i think for birds and deer shots i buy the eosr7 is that a good choice? I have de 100-400 rf but the R I miss the most shots. Thanks for this video, greetz from the Netherlands 😊
You're right. For birds and animals the R7 would be the better choice. The R7 has animal and bird AF settings which will help you get more shots in focus. The EOS R is better suited for shooting people. Thanks for the comment.
Can you create review of R8? Is it better than R??? Im looking to buy a new camera and Im stuck 😢
Personally I think the image quality out of the R is better but the autofocus on the R8 is more reliable for action photos. So if you shoot object/people that don't move fast (portraits headshots, weddings, events) I would buy the R. If you shoot sports, action, animals birds, car racing things were AF tracking is really important than the R8 is the better choice. I don't own an R8 but if I can borrow one I'll make a comparison video.
@@vaskoobscura_ Thank you for your answer! I've been told that R suffering with AF. I'm shooting portraits usually. A little bit concerned about R "age". R8 seems to be fresher, but unfortunately with only 26 (24?) mpx
@@user-sy8sd4gn1m those are valid concerns for sure. Go with whatever camera is better priced. Make money and then buy an R5 in the future.
The price is the same for the R8 model. I prefered the r8 given that shares the same sensor as the R6 Mark II and IT WORKS.
Both cameras are awesome you gotta go with the one that fits your needs the best. Can't go wrong either way. Glad you're enjoying the R8. Appreciate the comment.
I love the EosR
It's really is an under rated camera. I appreciate the comment.
The R is a great camera, I upgraded to the R3 but I still use the R
That's a great camera combo. You pretty much have all the bases covered. Thanks for the comment. Appreciated.
Is the EOS R good from train photography? I have a T7 now and am looking for an upgrade!
if the trains are moving an R8 might be better. The continuous AF is better.
The EOS R looks better to me. I just bought a second hand one recently to use with my R6 mk2.
Nice that is a good combo right there.
Sparkles 😂✨🤣 The best 😅
lol thanks.
That flickering crap in the video is annoying.
what they keyboard?
in my opinion the canon r8 is much better. it has much better video specs, better dynmaic range, , better autofocus and improved color science. the osr sensor is very old. r8 is cheaper than the eosr in my country as well
Expensive
R is not entry level! Its Pro!👍👍 r5 is better only because ibis
I was saying the R is priced like an entry level camera with pro feature. Thanks for the comment.
I really don’t like when it’s called “entry level” 😂
lol i get that. I'm only qualifying entry level on price point.
r7 looks way better
I have both cameras and the I can say from experience that the R7 has the better autofocus for sure but the images out of the R are cleaner sharper and have more dynamic range in both photo and video. But in the end it comes down to what tool is best for the job you're doing :) both cameras are great.
sir i want Eos R Camera Please help i give u Money Sir Pls Help
Thanks for the comment.
Bro this video looks so amateur. Garbage camera. Horrible look. Yellow and green?! Sony is way better
EOS R and A7III are the same gen and the EOS R easily beats the A7III in every way but tracking AF. Newer cameras are obviously better.
