  • At least two people have been killed and several wounded in the latest Russian airstrikes on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Kharkiv, which is close to the Russian border, and has increasingly been the target of attacks.
    In western Ukraine, at least five people were killed and 30 wounded in a Russian missile attack on the Black Sea port of Odesa. One of the buildings badly damaged was a law school commonly known as the 'Harry Potter castle' of Odesa.
    With the frontline situation worsening, Ukraine has been stepping up recruitment efforts. As part of a new mobilization law, Kyiv has stopped issuing passports and providing consular services for military-age men. Our next report looks at what this means for Ukrainians abroad.

I'm not denying biological facts and the battlefield usually requires a strong physique. There are, however, other tasks during war time such as logistics and nursing, in which women are desperately needed. • @stupidburp
      @stupidburp Před 15 dny +7

      The original reason was to protect population recovery over the long term. Soviets had more women in military service than anywhere else during WW2. This was in spite of strong attitudes against it because they were desperate. Women continued in service postwar but there was also pressure for them have children to restore the population. Ukraine has conscription laws largely based on expectations of family roles and some gender bias based on perceptions of capabilities. But this is partially a product of the history of repeated demographic disasters in Ukraine such as the mass starvation of the Holodomor as well as wars.
      Universal conscription regardless of gender would be more fair and more useful. But it would be an unpopular change in the law at this point. It still might happen if necessary.

      @TriAmpHiFi Times have changed. Even poor young people today are not the same peasant draftees they were a century ago. Ukraine is a highly urbanized European country. The new generations are raised with comfort. They value their life much more than some hypothetical "duty to their country", for most even the concept of "home country" is alien and they think of themselves first. Some will fight. Most will do everything they can to not do that even after they find themselves on the frontlines.

    • @TriAmpHiFi
      @TriAmpHiFi Před 10 dny

      @@PaulV. .
      So your answer is, times have changed and poor young draftees did NOT refuse to follow orders, run or surrender back in the day but now poor young draftees WILL refuse to follow orders, run or surrender.
      History and active wars today prove that wrong because hundreds of thousands of poor young draftees are firing weapons at each other on front lines all over the globe every day.
      Poor young draftees get two opportunities to make a choice. First, facing the conscription itself. Run or be executed. Second, to fight when faced with people shooting at you to kill.
      So what happens? What always happens? Where's the motivation you ask?
      After a group of disparate poor young draftees are thrust together in boot camp training something transformative happens. They learn they have strengths they never knew they had & they learn to operate as a cohesive force without individualism. The bonds of a Soldiers Brotherhood are sown.
      They WILL fight for each other. They won't care about the reasons why. The most important motivation is to stay alive. Their brother on their right alive.
      Their brother on their left alive.
      Poor young draftees have always fought this way and will always fight this way.
