Great picks, Norman! Love the Kim Gordon and Real Estate records. You gotta listen to Diamond Jubilee by Cindy Lee. My album of the year so far, absolutely incredible.
Was hoping to see you talk about the latest Vampire Weekend album. Definitely my album of the year. Great mix of neo-psychedelia, chamber/noise/baroque pop and a bit of trip-hop.
Hi Mazzy, I love the T Bone Burnett album very much. Regarding Pearl Jam, I share your view on the production, i.e. the narrow dynamic range. I also listened to Adrianne Lenker, and it grew on my so that I am going to get the vinyl album. Never heard of the Real Estate. Thanks to streaming, I will catch up.
Hey Mazzy greetings from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 I have watched for a while. Glad to hear some new music. I also love Adrianne Lenker album. She is a rare talent. In tribute by the T Bone record just starting to listen. The Kim Gordon album is still rocking, her collaborator does some hip hop production from memory. I think Dave Grohlmplayed on that St Vincent record sounds ok so far. I am a Pearl Jam fan but grew up with their previous bands as well. Good to know about it and will listen. Agree some bands can’t get production right - what the..A couple of albums I am getting into are Iron & Wine’s latest offering on sub pop and Thom Yorke’s Confidenza soundtrack…thanks for the music ❤
I’ve been a fan of Lenker since the early Big Thief EPs and I’ve been all in ever since. If you’re interested in diving deeper, Masterpiece is a good place to start with Big Thief (the song, Paul, is just incredible), and Songs and Instruments is an interesting solo experiment (recorded with a single mic in some cabin in the middle of nowhere - it’s a rare modern AAA issue). And you might also enjoy Buck Meek’s solo stuff (he is the lead guitarist for Big Thief). S/T and Two Saviors is has a really quirky, understated folk-country vibe.
it's always nice to see you venture into the 21st century Mazzy and review new albums, especially when they include 2 of my really favorite artists, that being Adrianne Lenker and Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent. Both of their new records, for me are total masterpieces, but of course I'm biased! Thanks for your views. Oh yeah, one more thing, I really dig your input on Rachel's Ghost.
Terrific episode, Mazzy, a few of these albums were new to me and worth investigating. As to the QR code -- I agree. I enjoy reading notes and credits on the albums as i listen to them. I did find what appears to be all the information you want on Wikipedia, and the sheer volume of names is astounding -- they would have needed an insert to list everything. I suspect Byonce was striving for a clean look to the album - a gazillion names may have detracted from that goal.
A recent album that has blown me away is Kacey Musgraves Deeper Well - the production is amazing, all of the songs are strong. It is a little twee in places but it’s all so beautifully done you’ll forgive it
There's a new "Official" version of the Beyonce album out next Fri. It has a nice booklet this time, and every song that's on the digital download. The CD was missing songs as well. It has one more song than the first vinyl edition you got. Hopefully they upgrade the CD, too. "Cowboy Carter" is my #5 album of the year, so far. The Last Dinner Party's 'Prelude To Ecstasy" is my favorite album of the year. They are an all-female "theatrical" UK rock band.
“ I know what I know, and that’s all that I know…” a great attitude and it makes your opinions all the more valid ( to me anyway…) I don’t wanna be lectured at and appreciate someone with eclectic tastes who can turn me onto stuff I hadn’t previously considered,( which is the main reason I watch channels like this anyway…)
Nice work Mazzy! I enjoyed the St. Vincent album too. Listen to it on streaming I didn’t buy the Pearl Jam Black Matter because of the price. I’m glad you share the fact that the sound is kind of digitalized in the sense that pushing the complexity of tones out to the edge which happens in compression. Dana and I went to the free Pearl Jam concert in Seattle in 92. It’s where we registered to vote. It was a protest of Ticketmaster gouging people. And it sounds like the record is cool and the book sounds awesome and the packaging is great but 50 bucks for one LP? Felt like I was getting gouged. I’ve listened to the album on streaming about four times already. I enjoy the music and thanks. I’m glad I passed on the vinyl. It’s a lot to spend for packaging 😅 I love the sound of the Beyoncé album too. I did a review of it on my channel. The QR code is weird. Even the track listing isn’t on the album. I was like WTF? And missing tracks from, about Linda Martell. The first African-American country star. YaYa isn’t on the record and it’s a pretty good track as well as Linda‘s introduction. Jay Z is part owner of Tital which is a hi-fi streaming service. I was impressed by the sound of the album as well. Sounds amazing for an album press in this day and age. But maybe that’s some of the technology they’re working to put out in the world. They also pay way better than Spotify, Apple, CZcams and every other streaming service. Tital pays a penny per song, that’s pretty good! Heck, if we got a penny per view on CZcams will be making a lot more money LOL. Didn’t mean to write a Dickens novel, but great video!
Maz..... I listened to the Cannonball Adderly poppin in paris last night... Once again, you knocked it out of the park... This thing kicks major ass... The 1969 set is next... 1,000 thank you's....
That bar code reminded me of your thoughts on the Stone's new album cover design. There are some interesting choices for that one critical moment in time. I've been enjoying Mark Knopfler's new album One Deep River, one of his best. Plus the Pet Shop Boy's new album is decent too.
Thanks for sharing information about new music. If you haven’t already, can you give a shout out to Josh Rouse? I’m sure you know him. No one in the VC mentions him or his music. I know he’s not a new artist, but he’s done some great work and he deserves some recognition. P.S- Thanks for mentioning T-Bone Burnett’s new record.
Well, this is very welcomed in the VC where a lot of the talk is about the same 20 albums that were released like 50 years ago 😄 I love St. Vincent and will definitely be getting her latest on vinyl. Have you heard of a rock band called The Warning? They're fantastic, especially live! They have a full concert on YT (Teatro Metropolitan one) and it is pure gold. I'd really encourage you to check that one out! Take care ✌️
Well said Mazzy! That QR code is the height of laziness. They know it’s going to sell by the bucket load so why bother. The least they could have done is print some credits on the inner sleeve.
Fascinated by the Kim Gordon but don't feel the urge to own it. The Lenker record abysskiss got a ton of plays in our house. Very quiet, elliot smith esque
Thanks for sharing some new music Mazzy. Will be checking some of it out. You need to check out Fay e Webster, I think you will like her. Her new album Underdressed at the Symphony is great and her back catalog is even better in my opinion.
Wholeheartedly agree on PJ. I didn't buy the vinyl yet, but finally listened to the album on Apple Music this weekend. There's zero dynamic. It's on or off, no in-between. I was hoping perhaps the vinyl would sound better, apparently not. Even had this conversation with a buddy via text messages. Very disappointing.
Mazzy, great review of all these albums. I've never been a Beyonce fan, in fact up until this album I couldn't tell you the name of a single song she's done. but I listened to a few songs online then bought the CD. I also think it's a good one. I liked Texas hold-em instantly. I also liked her version of Jolene better than Dolly Partons. Also a great cover of Blackbiird. Thanks for doing this.
I picked up the St Vincent yesterday. I love it! Cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, pressed at RTI. Songs are great, so is the sound quality!
HI, if it's allowed suggestions, im curious on at what volumer you usually play your records. And, if you consider, wich records sould be played at high volume and wich ones at low volume. May be a video with examples from your collection could make an interesting video. Best regards. (Sorry if my english is a bit "me tarzan" but it is not my native language).
Excellent reviews, Mazzy. I listened to that T Bone Burnett record after you mentioned it earlier and really enjoyed it. Loving the St Vincent, especially the singles. Need to play the Real Estate record again. Didn't grab me on the first listen. Dark Matter...I wanted to like it. I don't hear strong songs and the production is horrible. So thick, and I have no issues with the production on Hackney Diamonds. Booklet is great though, like you said. Curious about the Kim Gordon. Beyonce record didn't do anything for me. Blackbird sounds like an above average night at a karaoke bar. There's a reason there's no credits...because she doesn't want to show that each song has about 10 writers. Dark covers = Dark times?
The rub, as you put it, with the Beyoncé album, is not so much the lack of credits (however egregious that may be) but the fact that these physical releases (the vinyl and the CD) are missing four tracks, including Ya Ya, which incorporates Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots Are Made For Walking. There is a theory being floated that the physical release is, in fact, the original version of this album, and is therefore not the Cowboy Carter album but rather an album entitled Beyince (as depicted on the album’s cover). This reflects the actual spelling of her mother’s maiden name (I believe). After the physical releases were already pressed, the artist, according to speculation, had a change of heart, added additional tracks and changed the title for the digital release, which preceded the physical release by several days. This might explain the lack of credits and track listing, but I have no idea. In any case, many fans are justifiably pissed about the missing tracks. I suggest you check out the digital release, given your high praise of this album. Cheers.
Didnt kmow Real Estate had a new album out - great. Check their early albums out - just great records. Lovely jangly songs. Check out Atlas, Days, In Mind -all brilliant albums
Problem with today's vinyl: digitally recorded, dig mixed, and dig mastered to vinyl. DDD=DDD compact disc. And often means high compression. Brickwalled.
Great to see Real Estate getting some love....no mention of the fact it was produced by wonderful Daniel Tashian though, hence the title - come on Mazzy get up to speed.... All six of the band's albums are essential..

I saw Pearl Jam second gig ever in UK for music biz and liked them up to including vitalogy their most interesting album then they became a bit same olde rock. even bigger problem with the beyoncé record is that there are FOUR TRACKS MISSING! as much as i love the album, i refuse to buy it until it is put out again with ALL of the tracks and packages like renaissance was packaged, with the book and all that.
Hi Mazzy! I will send you the atmos stereo downmix of Dark Matter it makes the album much more enjoyable. My guess is that the mastering was just the “kids” running the house. They got the mixer for Taylor Swift and a no name cutting engineer. It’s a travesty this was so compressed out. We need to call Brendan back in to do a clean up on aisle 5. Hopefully we will have a proper vinyl remix some day. The atmos is not compressed out and you can hear the instruments. The atmos mix was done by someone who wanted to actually here the performance and not a brick wall
Great video. I’m really interested in St Vincent and the Adrianne record. Beyoncé is overproduced shit. She can sing but she can’t do a damn thing without an army of songwriters, producers, etc. To me, she’s more of a corporation than an artist. The QR code is her way of not shining any light on how much support it takes to make a Beyoncé record.
If you like the band, the new Vampire Weekend album is a prime example of modern records done right. It sounds so wide open and detailed, far and away superior to the streaming version.
I used to love Pearl Jam but over the years it’s been ever diminishing returns - this new album though sounds horrendous to me and even more shocking - all of the songs are credited to Pearl Jam and Andrew Watt! Unthinkable frankly and ruins their credibility
@@mazzysmusic That "omission" is not a mistake or a lack of time but it is on purpose so the only name you see on the cover is Beyonce and nothing else and then you have to go through the trouble to scan that code to read the rest of it. I totally agree with you, not good and quite selfish, I may add. That is what I meant in my short comment.
17:08 Pearl Jam- the most bland of all the early 90s rock is of course the only one left. My band during that time was STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. But Scott OD’d and then Chris Cornell died so here we are
cannot stand the compression thats so popular these days....I do not get it. One reason why I have only listened to Hackney Diamonds only once...the compression is horrible on it.
Ah, Hackney Diamonds highly compressed. First time I heard someone say that. Glad I did not buy it or the hype around it. Brenden O'Brien ruined a couple of Springsteen albums bc of compression. I don't ever need to hear highly compressed music ever again.
Cowboy Carter and the new Jessica Pratt album 'Here in the Pitch', are my favorites so far. I'm also looking forward to the upcoming Johnny Cash record.
These review videos are getting really good. You're now the new Lester Bangs / Robert Christgau, etc. Nice job!
Agree, that Beyonce QR code thing is crazy
It was a great review. Love to hear your take on these albums. Well done.

Excellent reviews Mazzy ✌🏻
I agree with you about that f-n scan code. What's the point of having an lp without a book or song titles. Is it suppose to be artsy?
Spot on review of 'Dark Matters' by Pearl Jam...compressed record indeed
You've got to check out the artist Cindy Lee. Incredible sound, incredible act. Dreamy, retro, lo-fi...wall of sound.👍

Who did the wardrobe? LOL, God, I think.
If you like the band, the new Vampire Weekend album is a prime example of modern records done right. It sounds so wide open and detailed, far and away superior to the streaming version.
Thanks for the suggestion. Never been a fan of VW 🤷🏻♂️
I used to love Pearl Jam but over the years it’s been ever diminishing returns - this new album though sounds horrendous to me and even more shocking - all of the songs are credited to Pearl Jam and Andrew Watt! Unthinkable frankly and ruins their credibility
The only name written on your last record review is "Beyonce", the rest of the credits are hidden beyond that QR code and that says it all.
Which is exactly what I showed. Everything else in on line. Not good
@@mazzysmusic That "omission" is not a mistake or a lack of time but it is on purpose so the only name you see on the cover is Beyonce and nothing else and then you have to go through the trouble to scan that code to read the rest of it. I totally agree with you, not good and quite selfish, I may add. That is what I meant in my short comment.
17:08 Pearl Jam- the most bland of all the early 90s rock is of course the only one left. My band during that time was STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. But Scott OD’d and then Chris Cornell died so here we are
You didn’t mention that there are also tracks missing on the Beyoncé vinyl release. Which is a shame.
I didn’t miss them because I didn’t know there were more songs elsewhere It’s a good album and long enough on vinyl.
@@mazzysmusic Well, one of them "YA YA" is probably one of the best tracks on the album. It has more plays on Spotify than the Blackbird cover.
Pearl Jam has always done the booklets.
Pearl Jam. Love that band. :)
If you love Pearl Jam you will love the Warning.
Check them out.
Cheers
@@SDsailor7 The Warning is good. Starcrawler I Need to Know featuring Mike Campbell is good.
@@TRamone01 If the Warning comes close to were you live don't hesitate to go and see them live. I have all their records. New one comes out June 28.
@@TRamone01 I will check out starcrawler
Now I have to check out that Beyoncé album. 😀 Wikipedia has all of the credits (art / production). Thanks, Mazzy ✌️
Jangle Pop
cannot stand the compression thats so popular these days....I do not get it. One reason why I have only listened to Hackney Diamonds only once...the compression is horrible on it.
No Tay Tay??????
She’s not omnipresent enough for you?
But then Beyoncé is here 😕
Ah, Hackney Diamonds highly compressed. First time I heard someone say that. Glad I did not buy it or the hype around it. Brenden O'Brien ruined a couple of Springsteen albums bc of compression. I don't ever need to hear highly compressed music ever again.
Cowboy Carter is my fav of the year
Cowboy Carter and the new Jessica Pratt album 'Here in the Pitch', are my favorites so far. I'm also looking forward to the upcoming Johnny Cash record.
Must be nice to have money to pi$$ away on vinyl no-names.
Maybe try to listen to some new music.
Well, he did have Pearl Jam album and, ugh! Beyonce. 🤢🤮
Wait a minute, no Taylor Swift! ?
Not my interest
I was joking.
@mazzysmusic OK, but Beyonce gets a pass cause all of a sudden, you're in love with Beyonce?🙄
I thought to myself when will Maz get around to the new Beyoncé record.🙄
the Beyonce record was just...boring..
I disagree.
@@mazzysmusic cool! Subjectiveness ahoy!
100% on the QR code! It’s lazy and not innovative. Vinyl folks don’t want a digital experience, they should have known better.
Pearl Jam sucks since 1998, last good album was Yield. This one is beyound BAD!!
