I am finally back to Koh Phangan and today I bring you with me on a car tour around the beautiful island of Koh Phangan, Thailand.

My first time in Koh Phangan was in 2000, and i married there in 2002! Since this we came back almost every year. also this year in February. And this year we had been for the first time in Phuket because of the Sandbox. And now by getting older we loved it too!

We live on Koh Phangan , retired here 11 years ago, very good cover of the island . Koh Phangan means “Island of sandbank”. Sadly only the most creative shops and restaurants have survived, good news renewal’s are taking place. Monsoon happens during November December ( normally June is blue sky’s and warm ). The island is awakening with many visitors coming here for Yoga, Pilates and detoxing, the increase in awareness of health has seen the growth of vegan and vegetarian “ worshipers”….many young folks escape the trials of western life and opt out to find a new relaxed existence doing online work in a relaxed safe environment on the island. Your view of the island is correct for a weekend visit, stay longer and you will come in contact with a new subculture!

Hardly recognize it! Used to go every year starting in 1995. Tommy's is still there. Used to stay up in Mae Haad for 1$ a night and rent Honda CR 250 for $10 a week to get around really fast! Not too many rules back then. Always knew the world would find this place! Thanks for the memory lane stroll

I had a great time there in March. Lots of young Europeans there. Caught covid but had to get it eventually. Recovered nicely in Bkok . Excellent care. Beautiful people.

I started going there in 2014 spending as much as a month or more at a time...didn't miss a year till last 2 years. My favorite island as well. Hopefully back this winter.

I was in February 2022 in Kho Phangan. The weather wasn't as good as you had but it is my favourite island in Thailand next to Koh Lipe. We were in the Resort next to yous and it was amazing too. Love Koh Phangan!

So good to see Kohphangan Flash back memories😁, i was there back in 2005, 2006 & 2008. I was staying 7km from Haad Rin beach, i dont remember the name. im from Goa, it is a small island in India.
I was there in 1997, Haad Rin, FM and not much more. Back then you got a speedboat from Samui, partied then went back to Samui. They used to have $1 a night beach huts with a BBQ and no electricity. Good Times.

I've visited Koh Phangan since 2012,and, as you, almost every year, beside 2020 and 2021, going back this July, finally. we are a family of 6, me my wife and 4 kids, and i must say i dont find a more perfect place than Koh Phangan. Like you we stay in Koh ma area, in maehaad bay, and we absolutely enjoy the quiet, the beach and pools, we love driving around, discovering the island and the people. Im happy to see some things are reopening and i hope things will get back to normal soon. I will always suggest Koh Phangan for people wanting a good party, relax, meditation and even families, the island, in my opinion isnt small and isnt big, it's just right for every taste.
I was in Koh Phangan in February this year and found a fantastic yoga studio, Ananda Iyengar, world class. Its so good I;m coming back for 2 months in July.

We stayed there for 6 nights in May - 3 in Haad Salad, and 3 in Chaloklum. Salad was kind of empty - not too many food options at that time. Chaloklum was a little busier with a super friendly vibe.

First went here in 85 whilst trekking around Asia,OH what a place then perfect paradise,i stayed on Salad beach,now so many tourists and the full moon party i went there in 88 is terrable now just a commercial rip,off
Had Salad will always be my favorite beach, I first visited when I was 19 in 1993, there were mostly only dirt roads on the island and to get to Had Salad you had to go down a washed out steep dirt track.
Back then there were only 2 bungalow operations, My Way and Salad Hut. We’re basic but absolute paradise. The reef used to be alive with color and fish but sadly not anymore.
I remember the bungalow cost about $3 Aud a night.
why not more fjshes and colorfull reefs ' in haad salad?...in 2019 still alive!
how cool was it in early 90s...? even Had Rin...low key, chilled... the next time I went in 97 only frowning gangsters would sell ganja - in one guest house....before old ladies in bamboo hut restaurants would sell it to you...not that buying dope is important but just to show how mellow and funny it was before the concrete started getting poured...
@@loontil he he, yeah it was really sketchy back then to get a spliff, I remember being in Tong Sala and overheard a conversation in line at the only ATM where a young French man was talking about having to go to court in Surat Thani or pay the cops, he was withdrawing about $1000 to pay the bribe, they had his passport, good choice. I would occasionally smoke, the owner of the beach, “Jook” would get me some skanky stuff, but only on the beach while walking we would sit down share a joint and he would reiterate “don’t keep in your bungalow, only on the beach and stash near coconut tree”, I followed his advice and have always been ok but nearly had my stash stolen by a crab. This was not only for my preservation but for his and his business/family, the last thing he wanted was to pay the local cops or to have a bad rep to MyWay.
But really it was another world back then, beautiful, pristine. He had a moped he rented out for 100 bhat a day, back then $4 AUD. One day he asked me if I could drive him to the hospital, I asked “are you on” he said yes daughter having baby! All his life he never learned to ride/drive but was a master of a long tail boat. Of course I obliged, we went to the hospital near Hin Kong or Wok Tum, I waited outside but he asked me to please come in to meet the baby, I never met his daughter before and literally the baby was just born, I felt a amazing gift to be accepted like a family member to be there at this moment although a little awkward he was so proud.
After he said let’s go and on the way he said pull up this dirt track about a few KM’s on the hill before Had Salad, it was a small local village, it was the celebrations for granddaughters birth, they had fish soup and home made Lao Kao whiskey (rice whisky moonshine)
I spoke pretty much no Thai but felt accepted and we laughed and hugged and drank/eat.
After a few hours Jook said time to go, “are you ok to drive” it was getting dark, I said sure, but in the dirt track down to the beach I stacked it, both in our flip flops 🩴, luckily he was ok and the bike was fine.
True story, I will never forget my time at Had Salad and MyWay, and a small part of me wished I stayed and took up his offer to buy some land, but back then I was a broke ass, backpacking dude. Anyway it’s changed so much I hardly recognize it now.
@@TheCroupier74 thanks bro great story can't believe how fast time goes. Went there in 94 - was awesome, loose, relaxed, okaaay in 97, then more and more shit after that. One good experience in '06 - stayed at HAt Yao - the two bars paid off police for the year... relaxed smoking, ganja plant hanging above bar on NY Eve - not that it's important but just to show it was loose...am looking at going to Ko Phayam in Jan heard heaps of good things about it

Nice,my last visit on phangan was in 2018. First time on phangan was in 1988, the best fool moon party,only a couple of 100 people,but in that time there are no roads if you want to go to other beaches you have to taken the longtail boat 😇 but i like it now beter with the roads,for me phangan is like samui 25 jears a go.👍🙏

Roads. For most of all its remains the dangerous. But for be it still nice attraction and remind me nurgburgring race track with crests and corners. if you had a head and not overspeeding - it pretty fun to drive. Also miss this island.

Thank you Mark. So you can do phuket/Krabi/phi phi all together, by renting a car, motorbike or using bus/ferry.
And then you can do Samui/Phangan/Tao all together as well. By moving around with ferry and renting a scooter.
You can also rent a scooter one time and bring it on the ferry.
To go from phuket province to Surat Thani province it’s really up to your style. Bus, flight, car or motorbike. They all work well 😉

Thanks for the video but I think you missed (perhaps consciously) three of the most important aspects of the island:
1. the yoga-vegan-tantra scene around primarily Srithanu but also the rest of the island, which actually kept the island afloat during the pandemic, unlike Samui which was devastated because it relied so much on tourism
2. the beautiful virtually undeveloped eastern side of the island
3. the actual people- both local and those who have become local that make the island unique
oh yeah...a 4th thing...which is the party scene...not just full moon...but every night...for those that like to party...
Yup, in March 2022, Srithanu accommodation was almost 100% full, and all restaurants and cafes open. Koh Samui, at the same time was dead from what I could say. Countless convenient stores closed down.

@@Notas_eli2official if you are replying to me I will say that I am not there now but I plan to be there soon. I am actually not that familiar with the eastern side of the island. Have only been there about 5 times and only stayed overnight once. Don’t worry about going alone. You will meet many friendly folks at cafes, classes, parties and they will help you figure out what you need to know. It’s magical in that way

I was in 94/95. There was also a disco on the top of a hill, with a view of the sea, and the English DJ with his vinyls. In 1995, the Thai police held a large-scale riot, where let's say, "Clean" the hippies and druggies, to make a modern and commercial Haad Rin, as it is now. Greeting.

Live in BKK--lived in KP for a month in the summer of 2020 but I don't drive and don't ride a scooter so I found getting around challenging plus I got attacked by 4 dogs in Srithanu - I hated all the dogs there; suggestions in regards to keeping the dogs away? Are there any cabs or Grab or songthaews or Tuk Tuks now ? Thanks for the great video)

I was there a month ago for the first time ever. What was it like? It was dead. And for me that was a good thing. I met some locals, left over hippies that stayed throughout Covid, and some Russians and Ukrainians that are stranded in the area. If you want a chill island with good food, kite surfing, some small parties, and little else going on, this is it. If you want a party, then stay on Koh Samui and come to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon or Eden party.
There are tons of local parties still on Koh Phangan, but you should be in a local crew to know where and what happens. Koh Samui is for families
While watching your video I’m in Koh Tao with my family. After stayed in Koh Samui for 2 days I was in between to book either koh Phangan or Koh Tao but I chose Koh Tao instead why? I don’t know lol next time I come back to visit my family in Thailand would definitely visit Koh Phangan

you couldnt drive around when I visited back in the 80's you had to take a boat to most beaches. TongSala was just a dirt road to walk from one side to the other!
