      Problem is they only ever go with M2 to port everything, and so does every other company, and M2 are still really quite small and so there's only so much they can be working on at any one time. But yeah imagine a big compilation of arcade, genesis and saturn arcade racers. If there was like 10 games I'd even consider paying £60 or whatever. And I'd buy a physical cartridge if they sold it that way

      According to Famitsu it was planed at some point to port System 32 titles over to the Saturn as either launch titles or early lineup.

    Sega really need to consider their hidden gem games from the arcade to platforms of today... Sometimes I wonder if Sega know what their sitting on with the arcade titles they have.

    • @Lightblue2222
      @Lightblue2222 Před 4 lety +5

      These titles are literally so good it's not even funny. Makes me wonder if they aren't released do to them not owning %100 percent of the game, or if they no longer have the source codes to do it proper.
      I hear that Sega lost their "source code" to the original Virtua Fighter, hence we may never see it officially released again.
      Hopefully that's not the case with Outrunners.

    • @someguy3186
      @someguy3186 Před 4 lety +6

      The more advanced super scaler games still look impressive even today, especially because they have a unique aesthetic that doesn’t exist anymore. It’s too bad that the only way you can play these games now is through emulation.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 Před 4 lety +2

      @@Lightblue2222 I'm not a programmer so I don't understand, but if they have the game itself already can't they extract the source code from it? Like, virtua fighter arcade machines are still out there, they have the arcade boards from inside, what else do they need?

    • @Lightblue2222
      @Lightblue2222 Před 4 lety

      @@duffman18 right? You would think.
      People have already emulated the Arcade Virtua Fighter pretty well, but it has graphical glitches. And I got to reading in the comments that the glitches can't be understood well enough to fix without the original source code.
      Then I started reading that Sega was actually missing the source code, and that without it they werent able to re release it for 360 like they did with Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA "which they still have the source code for."
      I wonder if it's also about legalities, that without it's original patented code they no longer own the game, but I really don't know.
      Only that it seems to be official that Sega did lose source codes. It was admitted that somewhere down the line, between moving locations and storage etc.. that whatever they were stored or made on got lost. They didn't realise they were lost until years after they were lost, and became impossible to track down.
      I guess they were always looking to the future and didn't realise they'd be able to cash in on the past. Or at least not enough to keep tabs on it.
      Supposedly Virtua Fighter is missing along with many System 32 games and Saturn.
      Kinda sad if the real reason for no releases is the inability to.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 Před 4 lety +1

      Ah OK, thanks guys. I assumed that it'd be simple enough cos I hear of things like rumours of secrets in old games, and then some people "searched through the whole source code" and found nothing, like the way they described it made it sound like if you have the rom, you can open it in some program and look through all the code.
      It's fascinating. I wish though that as a teen back in the day I'd have taught myself coding. I chose to teach myself guitar instead. But programming is like physics to me, I love learning about it through layman descriptions but I don't truly understand it at all

  • @lazarushernandez5827
    @lazarushernandez5827 Před 4 lety +5

    There are a bunch of Sega Arcade racers I would love see a modern release, be it as they originally came out, or if they decide to modernize; Outrunners, Power Drift, Rad Mobile(I know Saturn got a version of this), Scud GT, F1 Exhaust Note, even Super Monaco GP (I appreciate the Genesis version which gave you a full season of races, but the arcade scaler was paired back on the way home), Sega has enough racers to bring out an anthology or 2.
    Outrunners definitely needs a modern release, the Genesis version was a compromise; in order to add multiplayer the forced a splitscreen mode even in single player. The AI in single player had the worst rubberbanding which was present in 2 player as well, the further ahead you got, the more your car's performance would degrade. The shame was that Sega's Outrun on the Genesis was handled very well, and Sega developed single player Outrunners on the same engine might have been pretty good (i'd still expect some compromises but it would've been better than what we got).
    The other thing is that Sega seemed to revisit plenty of the locales of Outrunners(as well as Outrun) in Outrun2 /SP/Coast to Coast; Egypt, Greece, France, Germany, Niagra Falls, the Grand Canyon, Pacific Islands and others are well represented in the Outrun 2 games. I hope this isn't the reason Sega hasn't bothered since with Outrunners.
    Outrunners 2 (with modern versions of the unlicensed cars) would seem like a good way to realize Outrun 3.

    Still remember that day when I first saw this game at the small arcade across the street from my high school. The Mega Drive version is a joke. There is no way the MD could've replicate the arcade original, but it could present a solid game like the Outrun port if they did the game in single screen. And Sega was too lazy to port this game in-house. I am wondering if they ported this game to Mega CD, which has sprite zooming ability, how would it look like? I am surprised that with them kind of re-porting Tetris and Darius to Mega Drive Mini, why didn't they choose this game instead? This game would be a perfect fit to see what Mega CD is capable of.

    With all the polygonal 3D craze going on during the Saturn's lifetime, I understand why scaling games took a backseat.
    Maybe it would have been at home on the 32X.

    Your right. I almost hate to discover awesome Sega arcade games that never get (proper) home ports because my laptop is garbo and can only play some of em. Outrunners, Daytona 2, Scud race, planet harriers, ect. Heck could we have a collection of em in a pack? Would be a day one purchase!

    One other thing about OutRunners that would make it ideal for Sega AGES: the cars are cartoonish and, while you can guess which real world cars inspired them, Sega made the cars different enough from their inspirations that I don't think there would be any licensing issues, unlike the Sega AGES version of the original OutRun where they had to change the appearance of not just the Testarossa but also the drone traffic cars to avoid any trademark infringements.

    Loves nature, but it was also great when the campgrounds would have sick arcade games because youd find stuff that you'd never see anywhere else.
    Stuff that you wouldn't see again until years later when info on the internet became more reliable or accessible.

Man looking at the gameplay footage in this video really took my mind out of this #$%!!y world for a moment lol. Speaking of Outrun, I don't think anyone on youtube did what I'm about to say right now: why don't you shine a light on Outrun 2019? I mean we're in 2019 and the year is almost over so might as well! 😄

    I'm surprised you mention the music in the game but not the unique implementation in the cabinet to have a separate dot matrix display just for the radio. That was the coolest feature on the cabinet. And the force feedback on the wheel that would push and pull it away from you when you crashed.

    Great video. Personally, this game is one of the most important games in their back catalog. Now that we have a very good port of Power Drift on 3ds (and it is very satisfying to play on a new 3ds with head tracking to keep 3d seamless) it boggles my mind that Outrunners has not gotten the green light for a classics collection or Sega Ages dlcs. Look, 20 is not gonna kill me, in fact I agree, Outrunners is totally worth it for the variety of drivers, cars, tracks and the amazing scaling. C'mon Sega! Listen to SLX.

    I couldn't agree more- although I think some of the more recent arcade releases (think Model 3 and up) would probably gain more of an audience- these are the games that a larger number of those who game now are likely to have seen or still see in arcades today. Also, I completely agree with many other comments here- these awesome games would present much better value and appeal as a collection- imagine a model 2/3 racer collection, an arcade shooter classics pack with Lost World and Virtua Cop 3 in it- those would surely do well?

    I would buy it in a heart beat. In fact, I would buy the outrun 1 up arcade if outrunners were in mph instead of kmh.
    Also a note, manual cars has a higher top speed as far as the Arcade goes and the home port kept me very busy, certain tricks could net you over 300mph with mad power, wild chaser if timed right could blast up to 283mph before it eases down to its natural top speed, speed buster was a record breaker , and that knockout mode where you raced for pinks was super compedative

    Sega had another over-the-top racing game kind of like this but had up to 4- or even 8 players at once if linked together. Remember what its name was? I remember it in the arcade once as a kid and was blown away.

      There are several of these: there was Power Drift which had you driving go-karts for several laps around various courses (some feeling like a rollercoaster), Outrunners itself could also link up several units for up to 8 players, Virtua Racing and Daytona USA had 8 players linkable...

    I personally feel it wouldn't make the money it needed - as much as I love and agree to these games values.
    Sega might have much more luck by releasing a SEGA ARCADE ULTIMATE COLLECTION type of deal which simply emulated all arcade games that have yet to be released.
    Yes it would mean a standardization for each system type but be much more cost effective than individual Sega ages releases. Great video as always bro.
