Yes, the Omega Man, Vincent Price's last man on Earth and Will Smith's I am legend are all based on the book I am legend. I'll be honest, I have never read the book so I don't know which is the most faithful adaptation, my understanding is the theatrical cut of I am legend is the least faithful with the alternate ending in the director's cut being far more in line with the book. ( I hope I'm being vague enough to avoid spoiling anything ) The Omega Man is by far my favorite version, with the Last Man on Earth being a close second.

Price's is closest to the book...but lordy it's boring (I 💕 Vincent, tbc).
But...all 3 muss the ending of the book, which is 🔥. More importantly: the ending of the book explains the title (won't spoil)...and clarifies the book's allegory about prejudice. So...the entire point of the dang thing is lost in each flick.

" Show him, my children. Show him the pretty marks."
I believe that was the most memorable quote in the movie.
As to a fully faithful adaptation of the novel, Richard Matheson worked on the first film adaptation, The Last Man on Earth, but due to rewrites (oh Hollywood) asked not to be credited. But it is probably the closest to the novel.
Speaking of Veronica Roth, a friend of mine knew her when she was at Northwestern U. getting her undergrad.

This is one of my favorite movies and favorite versions of I am Legend. I agree that him dying in the end was a good way to conclude it even though it is so saddening. It shows his sacrifice and makes a good closing chapter to his story. And they left it off perfectly with a ray of hope in that the serum was delivered to the group of last humans. Neville was the last non-mutated human of the old dying world (winter of man), the children were the new start of the peaceful and blossoming one (the springtime). He held onto to his last breaths in order to give them the serum and immunity to the plague. From there the assumption is that they lived on to reboot humanity.
There is the constant subtext of war/violence vs. peace/love in this movie (Woodstock film vs. the PTSD flashbacks of destruction and the end of the world, Ritchie innocent views vs. Neville's jaded realist ones, technology vs. primitive/natural/minimalist, etc.), and the implication was that the kids could start a new peaceful world that hopefully didn't make the same mistakes of old dead one. It likely would be a peaceful new society for many generations at least (the children in it were like the "flower children"). Neville loved the idea of peace and the children (foreshadowed by his reactions to the Woodstock film and his interactions with the children) were the hope in it that he needed to finally live before he died and experience his sense of humanity once more. The Mathias family was a mirror of Neville, both dying off and losing touch with their sense of humanity in slightly different ways. Probably part of the reason he never moved. In a way they needed each other to have a last purpose. They were the last vestiges of the war that destroyed the world and its final hill. So he put it all on the line for children as the warrior he was and became their Paladin. He already knew it was too late for him, but not for them. His final showdown with the family, it was like he sensed it would be the end for both sides. While he didn't kill off all of the Mathias cult, they were dying off from the plague anyway and their days numbered.
The ending is so perfectly bittersweet and ties all the movie's elements together at the last moment to give the final message. We definitely grow an attachment to Neville thanks to Charleston Heston's stellar and charismatic performance, but we can let him go because his end is the final and total closure to the old and violent world, and what Neville ultimately wanted to see. It's like his last dying wish was granted instead of having to slowly fade away into despair and hopelessness in vain. The Mathias cult was dying physically, while Neville was dying in spirit. Was his immunity to plague more of a curse or a blessing? It turned out to be a blessing because of the turn of events in finding out he wasn't the last human like he thought. If there were no children left on earth, his immunity would have been moot.

Books don’t really adapt 100% perfectly to films as they are after all different mediums most importantly, and different markets that a studio wants to sell in. Also you’ll have the artistic licence and vision of the directors/writers etc. Some exceptions there may be - the LOTRings trilogy was really long and in depth after all but no way did it include everything imagine listening to that long story history song in the film…

    • @galandirofrivendell4740
      @galandirofrivendell4740 Před rokem

Hollywood will never adapt another's work 100 percent accurately. Novels have too many subtleties and nuances that simply can't be translated well to a visual medium. But it can come close sometimes. A couple of animated features that were successfully adapted faithfully to movies are "The Last Unicorn," which was written by Peter S. Beagle, author of the original novel, and "Watership Down." If you are interested in animated movies, you might want to give these a look-see.

I really enjoyed this movie as a kid because I wanted a cool townhouse fortress like his (I think it's probably a kid thing to want to make any building into a fort🙂)
The 70s vibe is really cool especially the soundtrack and use of the word "Honky" (hahaha, I haven't heard that since the Jeffersons)
I think the story differs from Matheson 's
in who is ultimately the villain (I won't spoil it in case anyone hasn't read it). There's definitely a Christ theme tho: his death pose in the fountain at the end and the world being cured by his blood.
The young boy that he cured and was killed by Matthias was played by a young Eric Laneuville who was an actor in the TV show st. Elsewhere and later became a prolific TV director. He's still directing today AFAIK.

None of them get the punchline of the novel. The first one comes the closest.
Matheson wrote several 'Twilight Zone' episodes and had his novels 'The Shrinking Man' and 'The Legend of Hell House' turned into movies.
George A. Romero cites the victims in the first adaptation as the inspiration for his 'Zombies'/'Ghouls' in the 'Living Dead' movies.

Although Matheson called his creatures vampires they actually act more like modern-day zombies.

"Tell me something, would you? Are you fellas really with the Internal Revenue Service?"
(American Democrats just voted to increase IRS by 87,000 agents. This will make the IRS larger than the Pentagon, State Department, FBI, and Border Patrol combined.) Very topical. 😕
Fun Fact: Charlton Heston had read the original novel on an airplane coming back to Los Angeles, and was very interested in a modern adaptation of the book. He was totally unaware of the fact it had already been made into a film years before as The Last Man On Earth (1964), starring Vincent Price.
Location Location Fact: The production company wanted a locale that looked like an abandoned metropolitan area, but it was too costly to build. The producer drove through downtown Los Angeles one weekend and discovered there were no shoppers, so the majority of the film's exteriors were shot there on weekends.
Historical Fact: In the film, the plague that causes the end of the world was unleashed by germ warfare as the result of a border war between China and Russia. In fact, China and Russia had some very serious border skirmishes during 1969 that had many world leaders concerned about the possibility of an all-out war between the Communist superpowers.

The "Leibowitz" in the title is the name a "booklegger," who was murdered trying to preserve human knowledge. The novel focuses on a monastic community in Utah named for him who see their charism as preserving knowledge (and pushing for Leibowitz's canonization). The novel starts in the 32nd century and covers a period of about a millennium divided into three eras.

I especially like the part at the very, very end, where Antonio Banderas unhinges his jaw, and devours the entire cast of "Fiddler On The Roof". I don't know what makes me sob harder, the moment itself, or the touching and subtle Danny Elfman score.

My goodness, I haven't seen this film in 40 + years. And is it just me of do the zombie women at 8:15 look really attractive? A sex scene between a white guy and a black woman was pretty innovative and daring in 1971. And is that Ron Howard at 10:24 ? Charlton Heston was a household name by this time after The Ten Commandments and Planet of the Apes. Fun watching this review Alexa.

I really love the feel of the movie, the emptiness of the city and for a while it appears he is alone with only those infected people. Even so, it does appear the human population is almost extinct and about to wink out unless that cure works. The only part that isn't great are the wigs and makeup on the antagonists. It doesn't kill the mood, but they could have done better. I guess money was tight for the film.
I get original Star Trek vibs especially the episode Miri which is very similar to this movie and the adults also were the ones that were killed off while the children lived very long lives, but eventually they would grow up and get infected and die.
p.s. If you look very carefully in the distance during Heston's lonely travels through the city, you will see lots of traffic moving far in the distance.

  • @frankrossi6972

Yeah, the Christ metaphor gets pretty strong, particularly Heston’s demise, which bookends the biblical reference in the film’s title nicely. However, the great Anthony Zerbe stole this show as Mathius, as far as I’m concerned. Heston seemed relatively bored throughout the whole thing, but Zerbe’s self-righteous post-apocalyptic messiah makes an impact without chewing too much scenery. His dialogue also has countercultural undercurrents of the era when the film was made, as his group of marauders was targeting The System really, not just modern tech, but he didn’t make it some sort of hippie zombie deal. Of all the films in Heston’s dystopian trilogy/cycle (“Planet of the Apes,” “Omega Man,” and “Soylent Green”), this is the weakest, but not for lack of trying. It’s the best of all the “I Am Legend” film adaptations. (Many like the Vincent Price version, but as a lifelong Price fan, I simply could not get into it, as Price’s acting strengths are tied to interactions with other people, so he and the whole tale seemed dull and uncompelling.)

There is an interesting old TV movie from 1974 called "Where have all the people gone?" starring Peter Graves, Kathleen Quinlan and George O'Hanlon. It tells the story of a scientifically curious family that while they are deep cave diving solar flares affect everybody and turn them basically to dust. The family comes out and have to figure out what's going on and try to make it back home to find their mother who headed home ahead of them.
It's a really good little movie that I believe was a pilot for a potential series that never sold.
I saw it in 1974 and it is always stuck with me. It's funny to see how many movies since then follow similar beats.
