      Folks, for those of us who know the truth, this scene is not disrespectful to the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is, in fact, a tribute to it, albeit one done by Hollywood, which I agree is not in the best position to expound Scripture. And I also agree with the commentor who said that only the blood of Jesus Christ atones for sin and redeems us.

    According to Heston's Journal, An Actor's Life: 1956 to 1976, it was mainly his decision to die at the end of the film. Heston disliked the idea of sequels and had just finished Beneath The Planet of the Apes on which he worked nine days and felt "no enthusiasm for his work". In the event that Omega Man was a smash, he wanted to preclude the prospect of any involvement in a sequel by dying at the end. Frank Sinatra had the same idea regarding Von Ryan's Express a few years earlier.

    I always believed this was the coolest ending to a sci-fi film with Charlton Heston in the early 70s. Think, Earthquake, Soylent Green, Call of the Wild and Airport '75. The 'Omega Man' has become a classic in-earnest yet it deserved a prequel back-in-the-day as much as 'I Am Legend' deserves one now.

    Captain America, Soul Sister Lisa and the Albino Horde...
    As a T.V. absorbed latch-key kid in 70's era Toronto, the frightening and existential plight of Dr. Robert Neville completely attached itself to my impressionable 6 year old filmic mind, having seen it first on a Drive-In screen with my folks back in '71. In all seriousness, this is one of Heston's most effective and memorable screen roles, in all likelihood his best feature performance in the Seventies. I was always obsessively curious to know how journeyman television director Sagal scored this assignment, there was nothing in his previous work aesthetic to suggest he could pull this thing off. End Result: Sagal and Company have created a lasting and poignant depiction of survival in a world gone mad...Gone Dead!

    The metaphor of Jesus or Moses or The Messiah is often used in films. Some would say overused. It is not disrespectful. It's just a use of symbolism or, in the case of Neville or Kal-El, an analogy. In Omega Man, it's a little too obvious. But he gives his blood to atone for the sin of using weapons of war.

    I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
    1 John 3:12
    Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
    Hebrews 11:4
    By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

    this isnt how the actual story ends, in the original story (by the name I Am Legend) the main character is made to realize that this new race of mutants is pretty much earths new race, he is the boogeyman, the monster, the thing that feeds of the fear of this new race that inherits the earth, i really doubt Mr Heston would go without being the hero, pffft

    • @dougbrowne9890
      @dougbrowne9890 Před 2 lety

      No, this is exactly how the actual story (as written by the script writer/s) ends.
