    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Robert (Will Smith) realizes that the infected still have a shred of humanity and that he is the one who has been the monster for taking and experimenting on them.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Adapted from acclaimed author Richard Matheson's influential novelette of the same name, Constantine director Francis Lawrence's I Am Legend follows the last man on Earth as he struggles to survive while fending off the infected survivors of a devastating vampiric plague. A brilliant scientist who raced to discover a cure for the man-made virus as humanity came crumbling down all around him, Robert Neville (Will Smith) was inexplicably immune to the highly contagious superbug. Now the entire population of New York City -- and perhaps the world -- has been transformed into carnivorous bloodsuckers that fear the light and live solely to spread their contagion to any remaining living creature that crosses their path. It's been three years since civilization came to an end, and the loneliness has taken a devastating toll on Neville. By day he scours the city for food and supplies while sending out desperate radio messages in hopes that someone might respond, and by night he attempts to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus by experimenting with his own blood. But time is running out for Neville as the legions of infected watch his every move from the safety of the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. They, too, long to learn the secret that lurks in Neville's blood, though they will have to take caution while attempting to procure it because Neville will sooner die attempting to slay every last one of them than willingly giving up a single drop. Previously adapted for the screen in the 1964 Vincent Price frightener The Last Man on Earth and the 1971 Charlton Heston action film The Omega Man, Matheson's novelette also served as the inspiration for George A. Romero's groundbreaking zombie classic Night of the Living Dead.

The true ending, from the book... is much scarrier.
It has the woman sell Neville out to the monsters. It turns out the monsters where not only intelligent, they had their own society. They where more like vampires than actual zombies.
Neville's experiments made him look like a monster to them. So they sent the woman to find out his location.
When she does, they came and took him in his sleep to their compound. Where he was to be tried in a court for his crimes.
He is found guilty of murder and experimenting on live subjects. And sentenced to death. The woman comes to apologize for the deception, and gives him a pill to make his death painless.
In his last moment, he says to himself:
" In the end, I am the monster. I am the one they feared.
    I AM LEGEND"

At 2:49 that shot/moment is what makes this ending great. You can feel the rage from the alpha male in his scream, and the transition to Neville's face, but not just Neville's face, but focusing on the number of people/darkseekers that neville has killed in the process of trying to find a cure; the number of people that would be considered family to the alpha male and his 'followers'; and at the end of it, the darkseekers were the ones who were able to walk away from the conflict, as seen here, which further reinforces the book ending which paints Neville as the villain. Beautiful film, I only wish that this was the confirmed real ending of I Am Legend rather than the typical hollywood crap we got in the original ending.

2:50 Humanizing the vampires was a nice touch and this shot really pokes at the heart. They go from simply being test subjects to having a real identity: somewhere all of those subjects had someone they cared for in a communal sense. Brothers, sisters, friends and now we see they are capable of having emotions. They weren’t just angry and completely barbaric, The main vampire seemed to be hurt and discomfort by seeing his mate in a state of pain and I only imagine that seeing hundreds of his kind on a wall as test subjects, presumed to be dead, only made him even more furious. Yet they had enough of a moral conscious to let him go. This is the ending they should have went with, it would have been a great twist and a even better message: Don’t get so caught up in fighting monsters that you become one.

Such an amazing scene! That cut to the wall filled with pictures of his experiments is just chilling, and it really helps sink in just how atrocious his actions actually were and how horrific he must have seemed to the creatures!. While we initially saw his tests as hope to save others, in the end he was actually an unstable scientist experimenting on and ultimately killing sentient beings who weren't even bothering him. This ending flips the script; making the hero into a villain and hits you like a ton of bricks :)

I still don't understand why people are presented with the concept of perspective, and rather than reflecting on that, you just revert to looking at things purely from the other side you previously ignored. He's not the villain. He's their villain, sure. But to him, they're his. And they're also the villain to all of their kind that they consider primitive / feral, and are wiping out themselves. Like in the book the vampires do the exact same thing at a larger scale.

@@AlecBaldwinsTriggerFinger Fair point, though I wasn't saying he is the ultimate vilain of anything, only "a" vilain. Just pointing out that this ending makes things much less black and white. He is a hero for humans, but also a monster to the other species, which is especially poignant when you realize that they are capable of though.
My first comment is more about elaborating on the creature's perspective, not simply discounting everything the main character was trying to accomplish. I just enjoyed the fact that the film showed the other side of things and showed how something initially seen as righeous can be atrocious from another perspective. For example, say an action hero kills an enemy trying to get into his home and then you find out that said enemy was fighting for a very undesrtanding reason, like trying to save his friend or get medecine for a loved one.

Really had nothing left to live for, I mean he did have the woman an the kid but still...his family an his dog is gone. Dying accomplishing his goal is much more of a fitting end to his story.
I mean in this ending what did he really do revive the alpha infected’s woman....an it doesn’t show if he cured her or not...they just leave. An then what Wills character the woman an the kid drive off in the sunset. Like 😑 idk I don’t see why they just couldn’t make MBJ the main character in I am Legend 2, an it’s atleast mentioned the sacrifice from the first film that led to the cure. But oh well... I hope the sequel is good.

This is undoubtedly a better ending. It's a brilliant twist and delivers a really powerful message; that these things might no longer be "human", but they're still sapient. They communicate, can form bonds, and even understand mercy and forgiveness. It also completes Neville's arc, where he learns to accept that what's done is now done for good, that these beings don't want or need saving anymore, and that he's harmed them collectively more than he ever helped them. I think this movie would be considered a classic if they went with this ending, rather than hold the mixed reputation it has now.

Came here to watch this in 2022 after hearing about the release for I Am Legend 2. I did some searches on the planned plot of the sequel, and if it would act as a prequel because Will's character dies in the first movie's ending. Was reading an article and learned that an alternative ending was made to be more in line with the storytelling of the book, and honestly I didn't even know it was a book first. I had seen the movie when I was a kid. I like this ending better. I think I cried the first time I watched Will's character sacrifice himself so the mom and kid could get out with the cure, but seeing the realization that the "monsters" are capable of love and mercy and were only really hunting him because he caused them so much torment was a pretty cool thing that I never really thought about until now. That shot when he says sorry and gets yelled at and you can see the reflection of photos of all his test subjects (who I assume have all died) is amazing. Sure he had the means to turn them back or make sure humanity as we know it never went through that adaptation again, but at what cost. Nothing to him, but so much to them. We're supposed to have empathy as humans and I feel like the ending I saw kind of did the whole story dirty now. Haven't seen the movie in years but I will be rewatching with this new mindset soon. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Look at the alpha's eyes. They bounce from Will's character to the mother-son couple a bunch of times but, in between, you can see them look down.
Along with his overall face, it could give the impression that... he's doubting.
This is most likely the first time any of his kind has interacted this long with a human, and by a hunch based on trust of all things. A hunch that not only went well, since he got his loved one back, but maybe... just maybe... left on him a different impression of humans, as dim as it might be.
    Because he shows mercy.
He *chooses* not to let his fellow Darkseekers tear them apart after finally completing his objective.
    He just leaves.
Even though he has, from his perspective, a mass murderer right in front.
    So he doubts.
About what exactly, we're left to imagine.

I totally prefer this ending. I liked the original until I heard about how this story originally ended, then I was disappointed by the unfulfilled potential. I feel like it's the most unique and interesting part of the story that after all of his fighting what he sees as just mad vampire zombies that he's trying to find a cure for. And it turns out they've been aware and intelligent the whole time, and he's their boogeyman abducting their friends and family never to be seen again as they all die from his experiments.
To have that moment of realization of "Oh shit, I'm the bad guy. For all my good intentions, to these people I am a monster." And to have the audience find out at the same time Is what really makes this story pay off.

+Odin Tillgren i completely agree when i watch the movie i switch it off before the horrible theatrical ending comes along and watch the alternate ending instead. the whole point is that he is now the stuff of myth and nightmares, the "legend", as he is one of the only non vampire/zombie left

The alternate ending is the closest thing to the books ending where robert neville realizes that to the vampires, he's the monster. And then he accepts the fact that he's the bad guy in they're perspective and finds it ironic that in later generations he'll be considered a legend much like how vampires were legends to him. He takes a lethal pill and says "I am legend" before he dies. Great book, definitely a must read.

This is actually really well shot too. At 2:46 when he says "I'm sorry" and the lead dark-seeker roars at him like "That isn't good enough" and it shows the reflection of the wall with pictures of all of his victims. And after he flinches back and just looks defeated the facial expression on the leader seems to say that he's surprised to find out that Neville really didn't know what he'd been doing.

This ending shows their intelligence more than the other. In the standard ending, they just attack until they all get blown up. Like mindless zombies. In this, they show mercy. Basically unheard of with “zombies”.

Anyone else here after the sequel was confirmed on Twitter?
Also, I really hope the ‘zombies’ in the new one aren’t CGI lumps of meat. Walking Dead and Last Of Us have shown you don’t need fully CGI creatures/people and that real actors make it so much more authentic

I love the scene where you see Smith's character's shame as he backs up and we see the number of victims in the background we see who died for his experimentations.
The movie was good, but this alternate ending as the official ending, funny enough, would've made this movie legendary.
