There's very few honest reviews on this site anymore. As soon as I hear someone say the company supplied me the item I click away and never come back. Yet it seems 99% of people like being served hidden ad's for products where the problems of faults are cleverly skipped over.
Update, had mine for a couple of years now. I do a lot of finishing work in construction and this grinder is by far best and most powerful ive ever owned. I can use it for hours without fatigue and it cuts effortlessly. Great grinder ( the tool i mean, not the website)

Nerdy, Retro, Gaming - some of my videos I used a variety of tripods and a adjustable PVC pipe mounted to my ceiling. usually you have the camera positioned in front of you focused on your work area and you wrap your arms around it to work on the project. I like the suspended camera slightly above me as it frees up more worktable space and you don't have to worry about bumping the tripod. you do have to mark out places for the cameras field of view so you don't accidentally get the back of your head in your shots.

To shoot this way I think you need an exceptionally wide angle lens.
Uncle Bumblefuck here probably has a full-frame DSLR for taking pictures of his little princess and whatnot on vacation, so for him a 50mm is actually 50, unlike most of us who buy the 2/3 frame "prosumer" DSLR cameras that turn 50mm into a zoom lens, letting you only focus on a tiny part of your bench unless you mount the camera on the ceiling.
I appreciate his attention to the audio quality. I notice sometimes when he's overdubbed the voice audio, probably to be clearer about what he was talking about (or to eliminate some background noise). BTW AvE, more Beethoven overdubs please! heh.

Obvious answer is to take a bit more off what you're grinding! the motor is just a stepper motor in drag, so e-braking it doesn't take any fancy pixies - it can be handled mechanically with the switch. Set it up so that when it's not chooching, the switch shorts the coils across a fat resistorb, and lenz's law will make sure that no fun occurs

that molly grease is very interesting stuff. aside from lubricating, it actually allows the rolling elements in the bearing to maintain traction with there races. although this may not seem important, i once said the same thing and used a regular all- purpose grease in place of molly in low-speed needle bearings in a suspension application and destroyed the needles as they skided and developed flat spots.

I thought the same thing at first too, but the molly grease i was using had a higher viscosity than the all purpose grease so i do not think it would be that. both greases were a lithium base and used within the specified temperature range. Originally I thought the flat spots may have been due to shock loads, but i could not find any impact marks or dents on the outer race, only scuff marks.
I took this a step further and next time i repacked the suspension bearings, i cleaned and re-packed the upper shock bearing with all purpose grease and the lower shock bearing with the same molly grease. next year, sure enough the regular packed bearing developed flat spots on the needles and the molly packed bearing was perfect.

I have an inverter and bring mine in my truck charging system. That's an often overlooked option.
Most grinder users who need high output are welding and have wall or generator pixies aplenty. The cordless grinders aren't really for that use case. They are dandy cutoff tools though. I bring my Milwaukee 28V on salvage yard runs where it paid for itself many years ago.

Battery-powered tools continue to evolve as battery technology continues to evolve, so I can understand the wide range of voltages now available. I think this is a splendid video and very good sound quality, and by god, sir, if I were in the market for a cordless angle grinder, this would be it! I am too cheap, however, and will be happy with my present unit requiring a cord. My job on the railroad required the use of a wide range of grinders, so I have my biases. That said, this is a straight-up honorable demo of the good and bad parts of this machine. The full-out turn the metal blue endurance of 5-odd minutes is one end of the endurance spectrum. I would suspect that for much lighter loads, the figure could be 2 or 3 or 4 times as long, ymmv. I am thinking that when a cordless grinder is appropriate, this might be the appropriate grinder. You done good.

Oddly enough, 4.5" disks are super common in the States. Half the grinders on the shelf at the stores are 4.5".

A sidenote on the PBT usage, it's likely added to the case plastic to reduce shrinkage during injection molding and increase the resistance to solvants. Fun fact, el-cheapo ABS plastic will rapidly wear away and begin to shine from repeated contact to the oils found on skin. This is why heavily-used low end keyboard keycaps develop a shine. PBT is highly resistant to this type of wear.
AvE, this grinder is pretty awesome. I just took mine out for a spin. I went full 300 pound, Alaskan Grizzly on this thing. (6'4"-290lbs) I did everything I could to give this thing a hot supper, and besides having to change our batteries every few minutes, it does a fantastic job. Thanks for the recommendation, I'm glad that I bought this tool.
I got one of those over 5 years ago now i have to give it a spin sometimes before it will start. I've used it for cutting countless tiles and tons of nails, screws,bolts,everything else. Been the best grinder ive ever owned.

THe highest praise i can give these grinders is that after being used, every day on a demolition site for a year, by guys who honestly don't know how to use one and didn't treat them particularly well, we had absolutely no problems except for the hex hole in the nut rounded out and we had to get creative a few times. Hands down the best grinder I've ever used.

You're audio is always perfect for me, never any problems!
The heavy switch is probably there because when the Mosfets in a brushless controller fail, they fail shorted, and it would just sit and melt or catch fire if not for a mechanical switch.
The Mosfets also can do so at any time the battery is plugged in, as the voltage is across all 6 of them, creating a time-bomb in your box if you leave a battery in place by accident. The switch takes the voltage off the Mosfets until you pull the trigger.
My thoughts on the super fine screens is they are probably to keep the inrunner armature from becoming a iron chia-pet the fan sucks in your grinding dust.
That's going to be a tough problem with open air-over brushless metal moving tools going forward. A sealed TEFC motor would be the solution, at the cost of weight and size (it would have to be larger and carry a serious fan to stay cool). A real AC induction 3 phase would work, but they are heavy and require a wound armature. Expensive too.
The particle retention is not a problem on conventional AC/DC brushed motors because they have no permanent magnets and shed the iron dust. It only passes thru, grinding up bearings and brushes as it goes. That issue is usually dealt with using sealed bearings and replaceable brushes.
Nice breakdown, almost makes me order one, but I'm not much of a fan of the Flex system, it's not servicable and as you noted in the battery video is just a landfill filling machine (using our money).
Message to manufacturers - Give me serviceable high quality batteries at a moderate voltage(s) with replaceable 18650s and a good balance charger and I can manage the voltages, thanks. 5 Cell and 10 cell (20v & 40v) should cover most tools well.
The 'voltage wars" are just a marketing ploy, it's the watthours that matter (as you have noted before), so start plastering that on the box instead. (to do your own comparisons, watthours is voltage x amp-hours) the higher the number, the more energy in the battery.

4 1/2" disks are oddball?? I guess the Canadian market is a little different. Here in the States, (at least in Wisconsin), I've never even SEEN a 5" grinder/disk. Everyone and their brother's dog has a 4.5", with the exception of some big 9 inchers. Even Walmart has a good selection of 4.5" if your local hardware store is out of stock. Anyways, love the vidjayo's!!

The Flexvolt batteries WILL fit on the adapter if you cut the little front tabs off of the adapter. They're only cosmetic, but they prevent the flexvolt from sliding on all the way. I use mine with a Flexvolt every day to run my old 18v circ saw and 18v grinder.

Back when i was building brushless motors for my model planes, I used an aluminum and aluminum oxide-filled tooling epoxy to hold the input leads in place. I eventually just painted the crap over the whole motor to lock eveytthing in place. The windings were completely covered AND the whole stator was glued in place with the stuff. I did this because the windings DO vibrate with the current pulses and because the filled epoxy also acted as a heat sink, transferring heat very well.
A few years late to this, but I have one and i love it, and after seeing you show off some of the quality internal components I think I like it even more
so... it has regenerative braking... it was just a matter of time till they crammed a prius motor in a handtool :)

I have used the same grinder for a year now and it still works great it has so much power and turque I really like it I cut very big pipe with it about quarter inch thick and 3 feet wide pretty big pipe and I've dropped it many times and it still works no crackes in the plastic it really holds up.
Cordless tools are *great* for those workshops where finding a goddamn extension lead/air-line takes longer than doing the actual job. Mucho convenience.
You should take apart some of the new kobalt 24v tools. I just got the drill/driver and I like it. Id be interested to hear your opinions on it.
If you look at the ID tag as he turns it over you'll see that it is in fact a 4.5" angle grinder. This is a "Type 1" DCG414 grinder and I have just purchased the newest version (Type 3) DCG414 angle grinder. I bought it as a kit with 2 batteries, 2 guards, a charger and a canvas bag. The first time I went to use it with a wire brush it shut down after 2 or 3 minutes so I went to change the battery and found I couldn't get it off. It took a rubber mallet to finally free the battery. Upon close inspection I noticed the battery was deformed due to heat as well as the stops on the battery holder on the grinder. I called DeWalt and they sent me a new set up. They're explanation was that they had a bad batch of batteries, the old batteries had a 2018 date code. The new kit had batteries with a 2019 date code. I charged the batteries and tried wire brushing some paint off of a metal door and after about 3 minutes the same thing happened to the new grinder and battery. Another call to DeWalt and they had me send the new grinder to their repair center. It's been two weeks and no word yet. I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem with batteries over heating and deforming?
Yup, I agree. At me work, lotta climb be ladders, no 110. The old milwakays do the skooch. That deweld looks a beaut! I will ask the boss to maybe try one.
Perhaps the paint acts as an insulator (looks like a good thick coat) to keep heat in the gearbox, but the matte colour will be helping it. A polished/machined aluminium has a poor emissivity (around 0.1-0.3 from memory). Whereas the darker colour will be much closer to 1 (with 1 being a perfect "Black body"). On a project I worked on we dropped our average operating temp (approx) 5% by simply anodising the machined aluminium black instead of leaving it "as machined".
Obviously the paint is thicker than the anodizing, so I'm not sure if it's a win or not on this grinder.

First video I've watched, and its in perfect tradesman language I can understand, awesome.
The beefy high power trigger switch may be a safety feature. They might switch main motor drive power through that switch. That way when you release the trigger you know that the motor absolutely will turn off. If the trigger were just a small signal switch then there is the possibility that during a hardware fault the logic board might get latched on at the trigger GPIO pin, or a software fault might keep the PWM for the motor driver stuck on. The result would be that even if you let go of the trigger the motor would keep running. Or the motor might just turn on by itself.

I assumed this when I saw the guage of the wires running to that switch. They were looking too skookum to be signal wires.
True. Safety (IEC60730 class B?) certified firmware for the motor driver is not easy and expensive. The switch could solves the problem.
+Paul Murray, the designers might have used a double pole switch. One pole switches on/off main power, the other pole off/on switches a shunt across the windings of the motor. Or a relay might used to shunt the winding when the relay is not energized. That would brake the motor even if the main power was cut-off. The designers might leave the motor windings shorted out at all times when the trigger switch is not being pulled. This would give the output shaft a heavy drag that the user could torque against when unscrewing the nut that holds the blade. It would be nice not to have to press and hold that locking pin while tightening the the blade nut. I'm not sure the the shorted windings would provide enough resistance to torque against, but the force would have to go through the gears so the holding force would be multipliedd.
I like that you don't accept tools to review from the manufacturer, I hate those videos on CZcams where the guy opens up the video by going "Today we are going to review the" (insert tool name here) while he stands in front of a wall of the same brand of tool as he's reviewing and of course he always loves the tool he's reviewing.

I have this grinder and it feels really smooth... Hardly any vibration to others. the bind control works amazing. .. most brushless tools will be electric brake... stops on a dime. charger is fast too. very happy with this tool.
I see some mention of the electronic brake being a bad thing...not working like a "real" brake. My experience with that type of brake on model planes says that they work very well, and there're no mechanical bits to wear out. I've seen an electronic brake on a 1 kW motor stop a 20 inch prop from 6000 RPM in well under a second...enough stopping torque that the 6 pound plane would roll noticeably. The controller was later re-programmed to do a softer stop for fear of busting the motor mounts.

Yesterday, 11/9, I left 2 comments about your video about fixing a mangled drain plug. Did you see them. Again I taught "High Performance Gasoline Engine machining and building along with Dyno testing and tuning for 10 years to 19-20 year olds with more muscles than "finesse".
There was nothing some of them couldn't destroy. Shear off a grade 8 bolt - no problem and I would have to fix their messes. That experience and more including doing many different things for an engine rebuilder. We built 6,500 engines a year and I've seen it all doing warranties. Some of our customers were butchers. One of my jobs was "engine failure analysis" so if I comment here it's from experience including using all kinds of tools and machines including my hobby of wood working. Get some Aluminum Magic. You are "as good as it gets" - Brilliant! Makes me feel stupid and that's saying something.

But with a 5" you can still stick a 4.5" on. But you can't go the other way without going guardless
I have had one of these since they came out, cutting roll bar tubing, grinding my crappy welding, and yes a good grinder makes you a better welder. This is super handy. Picked up the larger 9 amp battery and while you get some Popeye arms it lasts a good amount of time. Downside battery is expensive. Great review as usual, keep em choochin aye...

It's interesting to me that DeWalt seem to be improving so much in the last year or so as Milwaukee decline. I'm a contractor and engineer and swore off DeWalt after years of using them - I gave boxes of my DeWalt stuff to my apprentices to get them started as it there always seemed to be something falling apart. Here I am now with a shop full of Milwaukee to replace it, and damn if the last few red things I've bought have been straight junk (their cordless angle grinder is an abomination, IMO).
Side note: have you seen what Milwaukee are charging for a light on a tripod too? I mean, it's fine and works OK and all, but $300 buys a lot of Knipex and Wera tools instead of chinesium LED flashlights on a stick.

I was taught the spring loading in the grinding disc nut was some kind of shock absorber. So it doesnt tighten so much by inertia. And you can still get it off by hand
I'd like to think that those egin-eers from these big wig companies watch BOLTR videos in private and take AvE's advice/corrections/improvements to meetings as their own. Who knows how many engin-eers AvE has indirectly got them atta-boys from work.
The engineers know how to design products. There are many factors that influence the design. Cost of goods, and the cost of the production process are super important. It is not considered economical to design something to be as durable as possible. The goal is to design it so that it works reliably for the target life and use profile at minimum cost. AvE talks about this all the time and understands it. There is no doubt that the designers of the DeWalt tool conduct many design reviews and discuss various tradeoffs of cost vs quality or durability. This is not a nefarious process. It is just how things are done.

How do I not explode zip cut discs? I'm afraid now after a sanding disc exploded and hit me in the leg. If that left a big bruise I can't imagine what an actual solid disc fragment would do.

sirgallium when your disc is in the groove you're cutting don't twist your grinder. I you do that your disc will break and will hurt you. But i'm no expert so ask someone who knows what they are talking about.
sirgallium I am by NO means an expert here...but I will make a couple of observations. First, use the guard...specifically, whenever your body is in line with the rotation of the disc, make sure there is guard between you and the disc. Second...I think these "reinforced" type of wheels are extremely hard to shatter, and doesn't happen often.
I used to do a lot of grinding/cutting on AR15 gas blocks, using a dremel. I started with using the cheaper cutoff wheels, and they would shatter if I breathed wrong. I then saw they had "reinforced" cutoff wheels that have some sort of thread in them. Those bastards can go through hell and not shatter.
sirgallium Avoid putting a lot of downward (perpendicular to the disc) pressure on the tool. You can tell that your applying too much when the Rip'em bog down heavily. It may be more agressive of a cut, but more brutal on the disc. That will cause it to flex a lot and inevitably break. Applying pressure parallel to the disc for cutting wont be an issue. Also what other guy said
Don't drop them. Hard to get them to pop if you don't absolutely reef on them - but yah if you drop a grinder the disk is toasty. Change it before you loose your pecker.

1500HZ, its a 4 magnet rotor with 6 coils, the coils are in pairs, 3 pairs means the switching frequency is 3x the motor revolutions per second

nice to see Yellow improved their casings. Been out of the working world over a decade. their cordless tools always felt like they were going to torque themselves apart in your hand. could feel the casing halves moving independently in your hand.
