I did some various edits and changes like removing some of the dialouge when they open the door to the eev. It acually creates a more effective "jump scare". I tried to get the best of both worlds in this edit.

This film was depressing and dark. There's a feeling of dread, sadness, hopelessness and horror throughout. if you take the film by face value its actually pretty great and is actually a great sequel to the original Ridley Scott film. The problem it had was it was never going to live up to the pace and thrills of james Camerons aliens. killing off the surviving characters may of set the tone of this film, but alienated (pun!) the fan audience of Aliens. I have rewatched aliens dozens of times, but i find alien 3 to be difficult to sit through. It doesn't make it a bad film at all, in fact its brilliant just very dark and a bit of a downer you kinda have to be in the right mood to watch something like this.

It is a bad film but this is my humble opinion only, I do not like the film but I am aware it has a cult following and many fans who would argue otherwise.
I completely agree with your points raised about the feeling of the movie and how it would feel more at home following on from the original Alien rather than Aliens, and nothing was going to live up to James Camerons previous work which is easily one of the best films of the 1980s and is widely considered the best movie in the franchise, although the original Alien is my all time favourite because for me it manages to simultaneously be both one of the best sci-fi and horror films combined into one masterpiece, there just isn't anything else like it out there which is comparable. If there is, please let me know as I would love to check it out.
My main problem with Alien 3 is the pacing, it could of been so much better if they turned up the terror and pacing when it was really needed, it could of been a roller coaster of a movie like the film before it, unfortunately it just doesn't happen. I know they are completely different films but there is a moment in Aliens where it gets "turned up to 11" so to speak and it is relentless, I wish this film did the same when it was needed. Instead Alien 3 plods along at the same mundane pace throughout the entire picture, yes deaths happen and there are moments of excitement, but afterwards it recedes back into it's own sedateness. If I could describe Alien 3 in one word it would be stale.
I still commend it for being David Finchers directorial debut and risking taking the franchise in another experimental direction, I am still amazed at the fact they even managed to make a movie out of it at all, given all the script re writes and so on. Quite an achievement really, even if the end result is somewhat lukewarm compared to the previous instalments.

I love Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 each for their own things. Aliens is my personal favourite but I always disagreed with the criticism of Alien 3 being that Newt and Hicks died. I feel that this film has a finality to it for all the characters. Newt and Hicks dying was essential to Ripley’s story in this film. She loses everything just based on her life being tied to the xenomorph. And the xenomorph is just built to survive. It doesn’t care what it does as long as it’s race lives.

If talking about the assembly cut, it's a well engineered film. But it's just a terrible story.

since Bishop was essentially an emergency pilot for the Sulacco maybe there was a second android onboard, with a mission to retrieve an egg & bring it back to the ship. since the marines didn't wake up until they reached LV426 maybe the actual Bishop went down there & got an egg. if theinstruction self deleted after completing the task Bishop wouldn't even know he'd been there. most likely when Bishop was crawling through the pipe to get to an uplink tower he had time to find an egg & stash it. they showed Ash got instructions from WY so Bishop could be receiving new instructions when he re-established a link with the Sulacco & Wayland Corp.

Since he was a Weyland Yutani android he had a secondary objective programmed in him to retrieve specimens unbeknownst to the rest of the crew. It's a shame they took that scene out of both cuts, it would finally answered how the egg ended up in the ship which had everyone debating about it for years.

Best Alien film ever & this is coming from someone that was obsessed with Aliens since the mid 90's as a 8 yr old boy yet this is my favorite of all three especially as I got older , I never found it as depressing when I first saw it back in 96 as much as I saw it disturbing, It is just as unique as the first two films except this one is far more realistic with basically everything except for the rod puppet scenes of the Alien running (no that's not CGI) & it also his the best & most iconic Xenomorph scenes of all the films in the entire series & it's the most graphic by far like literally it's more graphic than all the other 6 film all put together but it's all extremely realistic made of nothing except practical make up effects , no CGI when it comes to any of the violence whatsoever!!!! This film is the most brutally unapologetic Sci-fi horror thriller of all time hands down 💯

It may not have been the Alien movie people wanted (especially at the time - I was as gutted as anyone that Newt and Hicks were written out...) but I think it's actually very good for other reasons despite it, and has stood the test of time very well. The movie is absolutely dripping with atmosphere, has a wonderful score and tells a great redemption story for many characters you initially write off as nothing more than pure scum (Dillon especially). It's positively a work of art compared to Resurrection and most of the tat released today.

    • @Webshooters1
      @Webshooters1 Před 2 lety +8

I'm on both sides of this issue. I won't say Alien 3 doesn't have merit because it does and frankly the film has no right to be as good as it is given the hell the production went through and the assembly cut is closer to Fincher's original vision but on the other side, Aliens was about Ripley having a family again, a theme that resonates throughout from when she sees her daughter died of old age while she was in hypersleep, to the idea of Hicks and Newt being a tether in a world she no longer knows.
Then comes Alien 3 to kick you in the balls and says "Yeah but that's not how the story goes." The movie feels like one long tragedy for Ripley as once again, the aliens have taken everything she cared about then finds out she has one gestating inside her. There is no happy ending for her and her ending is dying and taking the queen chestburster with her to spite the company.

Much preferred this Special Edition sequence, it added a LOT more despair, and although that's an awful thing, it complimented the whole vibe of this film greatly. Also, I know how many Alien film fans are either still on the fence - bare in mind this film came out in 1992! So they should have made their minds up about it by now LOL - or they say they dislike it because of the killing off of Kicks & Newt, but to me this film is just as timeless as the first two are. This is bleak, edgy, dark, and sorrow full AF and I bloody love it!
I would have LOVED if Kicks & Newt survived, because it would have added a whole new element to it, like Hicks would have helped Ripley defend herself, and then band with the inmates just Ripley did later on, and Newt would have likely helped them to use the tunnels and crawl spaces to their advantage against the alien, similar to how she evaded them in Aliens prior. Neil Blomkamp was gonna do an alien film not long back and it from what I could tell it sounded amazing, but unfortunately it was canned... =/

The Assembly Cut is fantastic, completely different from the butchered theatrical version.
And Dillion is a more ultimate badass than Hudson. Truly iconic character.

If you think about it…Newt, Hicks, 157 colonists on LV426, and all the Colonial Marines that went to LV426 would have been better off if Ripley had been killed in the first film or if her ship had never been found. If Ripley had died in the first film then she wouldn’t be there to tell Burke about the Alien ship/eggs and Burke never tells colonists to look for it so Newt’s dad doesn’t get infected so the colony doesn’t get wiped out by Xenomorphs and the Colonial Marines are not sent to investigate. So Hicks and Newt never meet Ripley and don’t die in Cryotubes. Alien 3 makes Alien 2 pointless. Every single character on the Solaco and on LV426 in Aliens ends up getting killed.

True, but my guess would be that eventually it would happen because another ship would get the distress signal from LV-426 and the same thing would probably happen if she died.

One of my fav Alien movies and directors in Fincher. If it wasn’t for the terrible cgi at the time I think it would’ve received better reviews. Why oh why did they even try. Such a great cast/direction/production. Stan Winston effects could’ve made it great!

That’s not what happened to Hicks.
He survived cause the Sulaco was intercepted his so called body was replaced before the events of Alien 3 took place and the game Aliens: Colonial Marines explains this a much better alternative to Alien 3 I think.

Killing off Hicks & Newt was just wrong, also if the face hugger was still active in the escape pod after the crash landing, how did it impregnate Ripley ?.

  • @user-ih9pf6dm9g

Where did the Alien egg on the Sulaco come from? Queen had no egg sack and no time to lay an egg anyway. The egg is shown not to be in the dropship landing gear well. The only place the Queen might have had time to deposit an egg.
The cryo pods on the Sulaco are the ones from the first Alien movie (Nostromo) not the ones they used on the Sulaco.
The Sulaco just happens to be within the gravity well of a habitable planet when it ejects the EEV.
Facehuggers can now impregnate a second time before dying. Goes against established lore.
Weyland Yutani arrive in the same class of spaceship as the Sulaco. Ok so maybe WY make them? But now it's capable of planetary landings. It's established in Aliens that dropships are necessary to get to and from the Sulaco to a planetary surface.
How did WY arrive so quickly to Fiorina 161? Seems like only a few days after Ripley arrived. Even if they had a ship nearby human Bishop just happened to be on it?
If WY wanted an Alien sample just go back to LV-426 to the space jockeys ship. Should still be there. The nuke explosion that destroyed the colony couldn't vaporize a ship that was so far away the colonists never found it for 20 years before Burke told them where to look.
