The Meat Locker - Alien 3's Deleted Hive Scene

  • Though ultimately cut from the theatrical release of Alien, the first film infamously had a deleted nest sequence in which Ripley discovered both Brett and Dallas glued to the wall and in the midst of being transformed into eggs.
Though this would eventually be restored in the 2003 “Director’s Cut” of Alien. It wasn’t until Aliens release in 1986 that we saw an Alien hive - or nest - up on the big screen for the first time.
Alien hives would reappear in Alien Resurrection (though not following Aliens’ aesthetic) and both Alien vs. Predator films, but would be completely absent from Alien 3. However, that wasn’t always the case.
In this video we explore the various hive scenes that were scripted for Alien 3, and construction on the cocoons was started, but were ultimately removed.
    www.avpgalaxy.net/alien-movie...
Amendment following further information learned after this video was released.
In 2021 Alien vs. Predator Galaxy had the chance to sit down with Alec and Tom to discuss their work on the entire series and we made sure to ask them about Alien 3’s cocoons where Alec told us that the “thinking shell” was entirely made up in an effort to get a rise out of David Fincher and no cocoons were completed!
“Tom totally made up the Fincher ‘thinking shell’ thing. There was a period there where we were having such a great time with David Fincher because it was fun. We’re all about the same age and we thought it would be funny if we made stuff up. Where we did interviews and then he would read it later and go “what the hell?” So Tom had a few good ones.”

Arguably, that was what the xenomorph did in the deleted scene in Alien. There are some novels and comics that have worked from the concept that xenomorphs in isolation would begin creating a hive and either morph a queen egg or morph into a queen themselves. The movies seems to have established that queens come from unique eggs with dedicated queen facehuggers. Maybe Brett was being morphed into a queen egg, and that a queen facehugger was meant to impregnate Dallas.

@@zippymufo9765 I don't know if it would have been a masterpiece. But it could have been a potentially better if it hadn't been micromanaged & actually had a script from the start. Before even set production began.
It's one thing to make alterations to the script but only having 3 or 4 concept scripts, take elements of all of them & write it as you go along & have to get permission everyday to do a scene is another.

I have actually grown to really enjoy the Assembly Cut of Alien 3. Sure it's not a masterpiece like the first two films but the restored version is not a bad movie at all. It's just that ANYTHING that followed such legendary movies as Alien and Aliens would seem a lot worse than it is in comparison. Add to that the fact that people were sour over Hicks and Newt dying off screen at the opening of the movie AND the oddly cut nature of the theatrical cut. All this adds to a terrible reception to a not so terrible movie, well the assembly cut at least which is what Fincher wanted to do before the studio forced changes apparently.
Watching the assembly cut today (I literally did watch it earlier lol) without comparing it to the first two films at every turn, I seriously don't understand anyone who still despises the movie even after rewatching the restored version with an objective mind unless they just CANNOT get over Hicks and Newt. Which would probably really upset me if I had seen the movies all as they came out in theaters but I didn't. I saw them all VERY young as a kid in the 90's and have continued to watch them all my life. I could see if you saw all these in the theater as they came out, growing very attached to them and then being really upset when they die the way they did. But I say to those that did have it that way, the series is so dark and depressing on purpose. You're supposed to identify with Ripley on how murderously destructive these creatures are and how they have decimated every aspect of her life. Killing Hicks and Newt instantly punches you in the gut when the movie starts and you just don't get why...much the same as Ripley feels.

I just watched Alien 3 and I think the harsh criticism is undeserved, I thought it was great. The wretched prison colony was a great setting, and the fanatical religious culture of the convicts was really unique, allowing opportunities for some really colorful performances. I think in tone it's more faithful to the first film. Thematically as well, it's concerned with how a tight-knit group of blue-collar people overcome a terror, and I'm tempted to read both as the proletarian struggle against the capitalist class, the Weyland corporation prioritizing profit over human life.

These alien eggs are not small, and the Queen was only in the second drop ship and the hangar bay where everything not nailed down got blasted out the airlock. The Queen detached from her egg sac prior to getting on the Sulaco. Alien eggs only open when next to a host - why would the alien egg open up several rooms away from the hypersleep chamber?

Alien 3 was a good movie but it had its flaws. For one they thought it was time to bring the Alien universe to an end hence the reason they killed Ripley so to bring the Alien universe back to life again they had to do some surgery by having her cloned to bring her back from the dead. The other flaw in Alien 3 is that we did not learn anything new about Alien biology other than a few tid bits like the fact that the Alien will be different depending on what life form the facehugger hosts.
Adding a scene like this would have given them a chance for us to learn new things about Alien biology but if you want to know why they do not go through with this its probably for the first point I made and that is they probably did not care about showing us new information about the Xenomorph because they were bringing the Alien universe to an end anyway and wanted to focus more on ending it.

    • @YugiohMaster1987

How would it make more sense? The Xenomorphs are actually modeled directly after a particularly rare wasp in real life and the Queen is modeled after that particular Queen wasp. She lays her eggs inside of victims, the eggs hatch, the larva eat their way out killing the victim and their salvia does something to the now dead body and then uses portions of their carcasses to construct a hive!?
So how does "not" having a Queen make sense?
Also if you look into canon Alien lore, cocooning is still used...but ONLY if a queen is not present for a lengthy period of time and if a living hive may not be sustainable at that present time.
To me, a Queen makes perfect sense. It doesn't close all the loops either, but gives an expansion on their extremely complex life cycle.
To go from human/life form ---> (THIS DOESN'T MAKE LOGICAL SENSE) ovamorphs/eggs ---> makes zero sense.... how does breaking down a human into ovamorphs...that still has the dna sequence to create facehuggers.... Doesn't add up, unless it's a final option and I mean final option if there's a lack of a producer of the eggs.
What's more believable that thousands upon thousands of life was used to egg morph (which actually takes a considerable amount of time) or something that biologically produces them and carries the DNA to do so.
Also, if you remember in Alien, when they're aboard the ship and discover all the unhatched eggs under the blue mist, everyone speculates how'd all those eggs get there and the Captain says "Or...something....something big laid these, something I don't want to meet".
^ For some reason people forget this one little line from the very first movie.

@@YugiohMaster1987 I am aware of all this, I mean if no queen is around, makes sense that the alien will egg morph victims to breed until a queen is born. The A3 runner just kills everything, even after knowing a queen is in Ripley later on. It didn't nest build or secure hosts, the queen would be born with nothing to use as hosts.

But this concept of a meat locker is interesting, a fresh take on the hive concept from Aliens. So sad this wasn't filmed, but with AI technology developing, who knows, maybe some day someone will create images from those deleted concepts? Deleted scripts? Taken on its own the hive scene makes so much sense. The film really lacks a big push for the final act. There's a ticking clock, yes, but something more visually apparent like a hive in the final stretch would really indicate... She's coming.
There are a lot of terrfici ideas for Alien 3 that never made it. I love just about everything Giger did and tried to do for the new breed of alien on display. I much prefer his puma-like design with the new tongue, and seductive qualities. The movie contains discussion of rape, and how the men haven't had the company of women. I always thought Giger's artistic instincts on this front were very apt. Especially with all the religious imagery and the idea of sin. Having an alien have more of those seductive qualities and use them against the prisoners... I don't know, I think it was a missed opportunity.
Same for the hive. Like I said above, I think it would have really helped the final act of the movie to have one more big reveal.

What ruined Alien 3 the most was the fact that the Alien had no purpose. Like they said they decided to make it just kill to eat, when it was established early on that an alien with so few hosts and no queen would use all available hosts to propagate the hive. This was the case on the Nostromo and Acheron.
They got around this by saying because it was a dog or ox host to the alien it was a bit more rabid and it’s instincts less concerned with survival, but seeing this it proves they just couldn’t be arsed and went with the cheap and easy option, thus ruining the franchise and creating a situation that ruined any chances of a decent continuance and didn’t even explain how the egg got on the Sulaco. It was just a sloppy attempt, it should have been given to a director who had more passion for the project.
That said I did grow an appreciation for the film eventually, I say eventually because like most alien fans when you were waiting for 3 to come out after the epics Alien and Aliens the disappointment of that first viewing was palpable.

I do not abide by he ovomorph idea...I also do not really care for any of the prequels and sequels after Aliens... (art direction not withstanding)... Ridley Scott had a scent that was supposed to be in alien where the camera pans around the equipment in the shuttle after Ripley is in hypersleep. This scene reveals and egg was placed in the shuttle for either Ripley to be infected or her rescuers. I'm glad that did not pan out otherwise we would not have had the brilliant "Aliens" sequel... The idea of a larder or meat locker where a xenomorph would gorge and then pupate into a queen similar to how bees get a diet that transforms a bee to a queen....aka royal jelly... The movie industry often destroys successful IP thru disconnected committees and allowing too many chiefs on the set... unfortunate.
