I won't call the old animations bad, but the new ones definitely have a lot more personality.
the old animations are bad for a Wii U game
I won’t call the old animation “bad” either, but I will definitely call them bland / boring.
the pipe animations tho ooofff
@@ottle_yeah now that old pipe animation sucked
@@elistewart3170That's probably because they've been reusing the animations from new super Mario Bros Ds.
The animations got an upgrade, I absolutely love them in comparison to the old ones
One thing I'm definitely gonna miss Is the older death animation
It's not just the animations, it's the entire artstyle.
NSMBU definitely had some gorgeous backgrounds tho, but yeah everything is pretty much upgraded in wonder
@@marceloxtreeThey’re not even close, what do you mean? 😂
@@marceloxtree It looks similar in still images, but it's more distinct when you zoom in or when it's animated. It's more cartoony, idk what other word to use.
@@marceloxtreeway better colors, softer shading, more detailed backgrounds, enemies that emote and actually look at you when you jump over them, etc.
Nearly everything is a huge step up and looks way more distinct.
The old style looks like a generic plastic looking 3D model. The new style looks halfway between that and cel shading.
Love the glow-up on that Fire Flower power-up

I absolutely love how it's stylized. It gives Mario so much more personality and even reminds me of his older games, like when he holds onto his hat while he's crouching
One thing that I really like, and that I think is easy to miss, is that in Wonder Mario is facing the camera a bit more rather than staring straight ahead. We can see both of his eyes while he's running around
Mario is at a 3/4ths angle in Wonder, which makes him much more expressive. It makes a huge difference. You might notice in cartoons that a lot of the time the characters are at that angle often.
Mario 3 did this. :'3c
Super Smash Bros Ultimate haved show the way
They emulate the spritework of 3 and World this way. Hell, they even bring back the animations he had in World.
That was the most noticeable change. It’s akin to sprites, for example, in Super Mario World
I only just realized how much chunkier they made Mario in Wonder lol. The animations are fantastic, you can tell the devs put a lot of love and care into making his expressions stand out.
He looks just a bit closer to his 64 Design and that’s adorable.
When he jumps he looks very similar to the smb2 box art
It’s an insanely rare occasion of a giant franchise making a concerted effort to de-flanderize their character designs. And for the most part, it absolutely works. This entire game is teeming with personality and moves in a way that is reminiscent of the old Mario & Luigi games, just charming and cheeky and vibrant, while bridging the gap between the classic Mario key art and Mario’s modern design. I don’t think we’ll fully appreciate the effect of this game on its franchise’s brand identity for months or even years-they’ve done such a bangup job with the visual style!
He must've eaten Lotsa Spaghetti
Never realized how weird Mario’s jumping animation looks in comparison
His fist gets bigger in the old animation
Yeah, pause at the peak of his jump and look at that silhouette. Absolutely bizarre posing going on with that model, I have no idea why that wasn't changed.
@@pineapplehead2730yea but even then the whole posing of it looks weird as hell. Especially near the legs where looks like he has one leg
orewa monkey d luffy kaizoku oni naru
@@Yohoat To be fair, NSMBWii and onwards have several different jumping animations for Mario
NSMBU just looks so lifeless in comparison…
NSMB really feels like the goal was just “NES Mario but 3D” with little innovation, which honestly was fine on the DS, it still was a bit of a downgrade from World in some ways, but was “new” (literally) and exciting, but repeat that 4 more times over 15 years and it gets stale.
You gotta wonder if for a while they thought the simplicity of 2D Mario was why it was popular, I’m really glad they are reaching out more in both gameplay and visuals
Lifeless is just stretching it
@@SuperHyperRed it’s really not. Nostalgia is blinding you

NSMB (except DS) looks so lifeless in general
The new animations look so much better! Its actually filled with a lot of life.

@@marceloxtree i’d rather have it more expressive than not imo

Same with the running
I noticed that too. Good catch! 😉
Edit: Yes they are such great and WHOLESOME winks, and nods to SMB3 and SMW. Another great way to celebrate the maturity, growth, and legacy of the mainline titles
Every now and then I still can’t even tell in Mario Wonder if they’re 2D or 3D models, the animation looks so good

It took some time but I'm glad they're embracing that 2D animation feel despite using 3D models and animating the game in a more 3/4 perspective like fighting games do, I hope more games have this style of motion in the future.
It honestly reminds me of Arc System Works style of 3D animation, practically done frame-by-frame.
IMO the Spider-Verse films definitely have some role to play in popularizing this playful, dynamic art style.

@@GameXplain What Music is That?
The animation when Mario crouch really speaks out.
He like "I'mma crouched"
This is just fast food adverts vs reality
Ugh, I just love the little graphic animation that appears behind the characters for each power up. The Super Mushroom has a sort of explosive word bubble graphic, the Fire Flower has two Fire Balls when you grab one and I noticed that the Elephant power-up has an Elephant silhouette graphic. I love those details. So flashy and fun.
Wonder is a present-day Super Mario World
@@marceloxtreethat’s the point, they’re trying something new. i bet if it was another nsmb spin-off y’all would complain but now that there’s something new you’re mad that it’s not like the original. ugh, there’s just no way to satisfy people sometimes 🤦♂️
“New” Mario looks like a robot, while Wonder Mario looks like a fun little guy you could hang out with
The only animation I saw that I liked better on NSMBU is the death animation
I never noticed how bad the warp pipe animations were lol
@@marceloxtree You keep posting this and each time it's stupid
I totally agree. The death animation on NSMBU was better. Felt funnier and enjoyable, lol.
@@marceloxtreeWhy do I see you replie on so many comments here?
The animations are not bad, they are a straight up upgrade from NSMBU.
Full of life, unlike NSMBU. If you consider them immediately childish just because of that, that's just stupid.
They take maybe 0.5 Seconds longer, but if it takes that to have actual good animations, yeah. I take those extra 0.5 seconds.
What do you want? The same boring lifeless outdated animations from NSMBDS?
@MagicPotato06 this person is most likely rage baiting and i would recommend not interacting with them
Yeah can definitely get the death one, it's a much bigger get bent feeling seeing your guy do a dramatic flip like that, also funnier
They really stepped up on the animations in Wonder. Mario and co. have more personality than ever before.
God the animation quality it's like night and day Wonder is so appealing to look at 😍
To everyone saying that the NSMB games are lifeless and boring because of the animation, that doesn’t make sense. The voices are great, the levels are pretty creative and fun, and the animation isn’t too bad. Sure, NSMBU could have had different models like Wonder, but that doesn’t mean the other games are bland. Remember that the NSMB series started in the mid/late 2000s. It’s not like Mario in Galaxy or Sunshine looked all that animated either. Try playing the classic NSMB games again. You may have forgotten how cool they actually are!
I agree with you for the most part. It's all-too-easy for people to bad-mouth older things for not being as great as the latest thing. Doing so just indicates that person doesn't understand nor appreciate how progress works.
That said, it's all just opinions anyway. It's unlikely to change the minds of others on such things unless/until they choose to do it themselves.
People saying like that never play Mario or just play Recent titles.
Life (Wonder) vs. Lifeless (U Deluxe)
Yeah I definitely prefer the new animations. NSMBU doesn’t have bad animation but wonder definitely has more to it and charm. ❤
NSMBU‘s running animation was atrocious, I’m so glad they got rid of it.
@@themc3140 this haha
I love the way Mario is in Wonder. Facing a bit more the camera, which allow much more expression over all
Another thing not enough people are talking about is on joycons and pro controllers with HD rumble are the haptics. It feels so nice when Mario enters a pipe vertically and you can feel his legs wiggling as he squirms up the pipe.
I love Wonder’s pipe animations. Especially when their legs dangle going up a pipe
@@marceloxtreedoesn’t matter, it’s only a little bit extra time. stop being a scrooge and enjoy the game otherwise. i like gaming myself but it never bothered me as much as it bothered you when i played it
@@matthewlopetegui6204 What he says is valid. I do think a quick squash and stretch "schloop" and "pop" would have been better for timing.
It gets annoying after a while, as nice as the animation is.
@@DeevDaRabbit maybe it would if you were in a time strain or something, but it’s not that big of a deal to think about really
Honestly, prior to this comparison, I never gave much thought to the animations, you know? Mario runs, jumps, goes down pipes, etc. when you control him and that was all that really mattered.
After this, I think I might be a bit more attentive.
the crouch gives me mario world vibes. honestly the whole game has this mario world vibe to it
Yeah, this is like the next SMW, which is a good path because that's still one of the best games of all time
The pipe animations are night and day differences lol. NSMBU is just a static image
@@marceloxtree eh, agree to disagree I guess, the whole feel of wonder is more expression in animations, and the new animation has exactly that. So what if it takes half a second longer
@@ghdesign_i agree
I got to say, it feels nice to finally get a new game in a series that feels like a worthy improvement to a previous entry! Seeing the new animations Wonder has to offer always makes me happy 👍
The way that his fist expands when he punches anything has always been peculiar to me, but I always understood it.
only thing NSMBU did better was the death animation. I love seeing mario do a full ragdoll backflip 💀
Wonder’s animation is beautiful!
but not normal mario style
Expressive animations? In a MARIO GAME?? I'm not a Mario fan at all, but Super Mario Bros. Wonder seems really cool and fresh! Count me in this one.
The game feels so new, fresh, and expressive that ironically it reminds me way more of the classic games.
I will say that I still like the death animation more in the old games.
Mario finally developed emotions lol
Sunshine and Galaxy’s endings:
why do u say that
Damn. Really shows how Wonder is on a whole different level.
So much personality in the new animations I love it!
I'm not saying it's the direct cause, but ever since the release of Into The Spiderverse in 2018 we have seen a change in 3D animation where animators aren't scared of being more experessive and cartoony. I was starting to get tired of every 3D project being like "Oh my god you can see the sweat molecules on his head." I'm loving this new trend and I'm hoping it's here to stay for a long, long time.
Oh it absolutely was the direct cause. That movie had a massive influence on today's animation.
This has been what I wanted from animation for the longest time. I'm really glad that movie made people see the value in it because in all honesty it was getting boring seeing everything try to mimic what I see in real life every second and nothing imaginative
What about the Lego Movie?
i love how tired he looks when he climbs out top of the pipe, its adorableee
The only animation where I still like the NSMB more is the death. The way Mario flings back and falls down is funny but I do see that they are going with a Super Mario World style
The new animations give off a super Mario world vibe.
Proof that you don’t need 4K visuals and ray tracing to make a great game. These graphics are and animation are superb.
Old animations got the job done, new animations are just an amazing additional layer. Really shows how great the animators were, and how much time was put into every detail
I never really noticed until that side by side comparison, but that 45° angle the characters in Wonder have add a lot of personality
NSMB series was always some "we have Mario at home" tier stuff. Just looks like mobile schlock in comparison to Wonder.
I think they finally realized we care about the character animations vs just the level designs
my god the upgrade

Wonder's easily better, but I think people overexaggerate when saying that the New Soup games look like garbage.
Like, bro, you want a 2D platformer with 3D models that does look like crap? A copy of Sonic Colors Ultimate is waiting for you in the bargain bin.
Sonic Colors Ultimate’s models aren’t THAT bad
Mario looks so lifeless in NSMBUD 💀

NSMB animations were made with a technical purpose, while SMBW animations are made with an artistic purpose.
I love that the crouch is based on Super Mario World! That makes me so happy!
Man look at those nsmbu backgrounds and compare them to Wonder. People who say Wonder looks like NSMBU definitely need their eyes checked lol.
Never realized how odd of a jump Mario does in the nsmb games. Looks nothing like the iconic jump.

The new ones feel like a hand drawn cartoon, which is endearing to me
Wow imagine another 10 years I don’t even know how it could get any better
It’ll be hard saying goodbye to the classic look we’ve had since the GameCube and DS, but the new game feels like a 90s game somehow. Already feels like a classic
A 90s game? Hmm I don’t know, it feel more like a 2020’s game to me.
That's because most of the sprites resemble the first games' sprites and old art before the 3D era came in! :0
I'm SOOOOO glad Mario now kicks the shell again instead of throwing it!
0:00 You didnt include the two other jump animations for NSMBU. Mario has three different jumping animations in NSMBU, and they even look different when he faces the other way due to perspective.
I love how cartoony mario is ^-^
Those new animations look so clean, they’re definitely a upgrade. Not that the old animations were particularly bad but there is just so much detail put into the new ones, take for example that running animation where Mario’s legs turn into blur and the new animations for picking up Power-ups

I like both but wonder looks incredible! I love it!
Both are great but Super Mario Bros Wonder feels more like classic Mario.
Aside from a few bizarre overly-flashy ones (like the fire flower power-up animation), that's quite accurate. It's great to see them finally nail the feel of the original artwork.
I wouldn't call the old animations "bad", but they are boring, they are so, simple, the new ones are a complete facelift, or the next thing to that
I love how now we have new pipe animations, the old ones don't even look like an animation before he just stands there as if the pipe just poops mario's
Many pipes *do* have poop running through them, so that makes sense in a way.
The way he gets the mushroom power up 0:50 when it’s slowed down you can see his mouth is closed which makes it look like he ate the mushroom. I’m in LOVE with these animations.
The new animations kinda resemble more, Super Mario World

I love how they actually have a pipe animation now and its not just him sliding into it
i think this is a great example of how wonder really takes the mario 2d platformers to the next level - it's not that the old platformers are bad (new super mario bros on the ds is one of my favorites), but that wonder just has so much more personality. even in the little movement animations, it feels less like mario as a vessel for the player and more like a character within the world (things like looking before he exits pipes, how he spins when he powers up, etc). that's the biggest strength of wonder - how incredibly creative it is, and just how distinct and full of personality it is. one of my favorite games this year by far
