White People Don't Exist? Culture, Politics, Social Construct

  • This is my public complete response to the idea that white people don't exist. Is it true? is it correct? is it false? Does it apply only to white people?
White is a racialized classification of people and a skin color specifier, generally used for people of European ancestry, although the definition can vary depending on context, nationality, and point of view.
The proposed explanation is that white people are a societal construct, or flawed arbitrary group classifier, based on the fact that within this very group, "white", we put together people of different cultural background, with different cultures. White Europeans, An English man, A french man an Italian a Scandinavian, a German, an American of European descent, what do they have in common? Nothing, so white people don't exist.
Link to Ancient Greeks Couldn't see blue
    • Ancient Greeks Couldn'...
It is a tentative answer, which can and will be responded in kind, in the following way. If based on your own parameters of culture and diversity, and national differenciation white people don't exist, then neither do black people. In fact, putting all black people into one single group is more nonsensical than doing it with white people, according to your own parametres.
And differently from you, I can actually prove this one with science.
    On Population Diversity
You see African populations harbour the greatest genetic phenotipic diversity according to molecular genetics and whole genome sequence data, across a broad geographic range. That's due to Extensive population substructure, the largest number of population-specific alleles, and less linkage disequilibrium (LD) among loci, and heritable variation in the human genome.
This is why, as he doesn't know because he doesn't actually care, Africa is an important region to study human genetic diversity due to several factors, such as, climate variation, diet, exposure to infectious disease, a number of demographic factors including extensive population subsctructure as well as locus-specific factors such as selection, mutation, recombinatio and gene conversion, which result in the above mentioned high levels of genetic and phenotypic variation in seveal given population clusters, which is excellent to study their implications for the mapping of complex traits within large population genetic studies.
Because of considerable environmental diversity, African populations also show a range of linguistic, cultural, and phenotypic variation which is greater than what we find in Europe.
Despite the overwhelming evidence of African population genetics, the pattern of genome-wide nuclear genetic diversity across geographically and ethnically diverse sub groups, and enormous cultural and linguistic divergence, shows either a complete ignorance on the topic, or a deliberate missuse. I'll take either.
measured using two different estimators: D’ and r2 (161).
    #metatron #white #debunked
Demonstrated Although several TAS2R loci contribute to variability in PTC taste perception , 50%--85% of the phenotypic variance in PTC sensitivity is attributed to variation at the TAS2R38 gene. Studies have identified three amino acid substitutions at TAS2R38 that are in nearly complete LD in non-African populations and that form two common amino acid haplotypes
Europeans speak many different langauges so it makes no sense to call them all white, say more proponents. The enormous ethnolinguistic diversity in sub-Saharan African populations is rather extensive. There are more than 2000 distinct ethno-linguistic groups in Africa, speaking languages that constitute nearly a third of the world’s languages So however you try to frame it, the argument is completely mute on a multitude of levels and shows and extreme bias and the sole objective of singling out a specific group, namely white people, for political reasons, in complete disregard of objective reality. And yes I will get to the political concept of whitness, which is a completely different kettle of fish.
Yet Culturally, linguistically, genetically, all these categorizations are arbitrary and somewhat fluid. You either accept them all or reject them all. The idea that black is accurate but white is a social construct, is ludicrous.
All discriminatory language, against black brwon white asian is bad. All of it. Historically humans did bad things to other humans. In order to Build a racism free society the first step is to treat everyone equally with respect, kindness and fairnesse, that includes white people. This is what we need to realize to end racism.
I support and encourage No violence, no bullying of any kind, we are all human being, this is the common denominator.
It's the concept of ethnic superiority that needs to be removed, it does not matter where it comes from. Look a this, this is not white supremacy but it's as bad. This is what you get if all you do is remove the concept of whitness, but keep everything else.

It being a social construct literally means it's imaginary. There is no scientific consensus of what a white person is. There is no white person or black person gene. It's made-up terminology to separate people based on the perceived color of their skin. A lot of white people have black ancestry, yet are still considered white. Some mixed-race people look like a typical white person, but are they classified as white because of their parentage? There is literally a mixed race twin where one has black skin and the other has white skin. So is one white and one black despite having the same parents and being literal twins? It's all just made up constructs.

@@HetYaomproper culture? That right there shows that you haven’t experienced much considering we have every single one of those examples & more. Southern cooking is far more than black people. The fact you said that shows you don’t get the idea of culture bc you named one that is multi racial including a majority being white. I have feeling you’ve been around a lot of midwestern states that have a style of cooking mocked by a lot of people, originating in areas of lack of food & times of inability to go anywhere due to snow. The fact that that is always the style of cooking brought up when talking about white peoples cooking. Irony how quickly people conveniently “forget” it was white people that went out of their way to get spices. To also expand the varieties of foods in agriculture of all kinds. Many parts of our European lineage has remained traditional & a way of life. We have culture.

For my senior seminar in Celtic culture, I wrote my term paper about ethnic identity politics in Northern Ireland. So I looked up the census data, hoping to see the distribution of people of pure Irish descent vs. people who came from Great Britain. No such luck. The Northern Ireland census (circa 2008) made no distinction between Irish, Scottish, English, Welsh, Cornish, French, Dutch, Serbo-Croatian, etc. There was just one megalithic category -- "white." But wait, it gets better. "White" was about 98 or so percent of the Northern Ireland population. Chinese and Indian each came in at around 0.5 percent. Then, coming in with just under 0.5 percent of the population was "Irish Travelers..."
If you don't know, Irish Travelers are nomadic Irish people. Their lifestyle is similar to Gypsies, but they are not in any way related to Gypsies, they are genetically 100 percent Irish in every way. They speak the same language, wear the same clothes, eat the same foods, everything identical to mainstream Irish people, they just tend to be itinerant, living in wagons, tents or RVs instead of fixed-foundation homes, and they tend to be poorer, less educated and occupy the lowest rung of society. But their skin, hair, eyes and names are the same as every other ethic Irish person! But English, Scottish, Welsh, Polish, Italians and Czechoslovakians are considered white in Northern Ireland, but Irish Travelers are not. It still astounds me...

The child kept saying he was born in an African country and now living in the United States, but the teachers thought otherwise because of the fact that he was white and not black. I was very upset in reading that story.

    • @rajasmasala
      @rajasmasala Před 9 měsíci

Your upset is a non sequitur. African American refers to a specific ethnic identity. Actually as I understand it because of white supremacism even African immigrants hate to be considered African American, because this is constructed as a kind of pariah status in the US (and a lot of these guys outside of refugees are capitalists or proud professionals anyway), because these immigrants tend to be socially conservative and believe the local blacks must be bad because the media over there is obsessed with black criminality etc. I think Metatron is just confused by the differences between European and American talk. I mean America is where they came up with the one drop rule while in Italy if you're not a crazy racist (which is enough to get Melone the pole position and Berlusconi before) you just say Italian with black skin / African heritage. I'm Brazilian, with Italian descent, as I've said. I'm white in Brazil, no questions about it. But in the United States I'm considered LATINO (ironically because of the features I've inherited from my Italian ancestors) even at a glance, and, EVEN MORE SO, when they know my nationality. Americans, in general, DO NOT consider white people from Latin America as "white" even though in the census they don't use anymore the category of "non-white" for us, which, by the way, was valid YESTERDAY in historical terms. Brazilians racists who generally proud themselves of being "white" (even BLONDE people with BLUE eyes we are taking here, mid you!) are upset when they are made fun, by Brazilians AND by AMERICANS for it, because they are classified by their fellow racists in the US as LATINOS, not white. It makes me so sad that we're even having this conversation in the first place. You'd think that we would have come so much further at this point in time, but instead, it seems like we're only regressing backwards. Instead of learning from history, the pendulum just swings and we're going from one extreme to the other. I'm so tired of this.
Then again, I'm just a little white girl from Sweden and apparently, I don't exist so I guess then neither do my feelings or this comment.
Just wanted to add one thing that comes to mind as I'm watching this video. As many of you probably already know, Chinese and Japanese, when naming their children will pick kanji/s (sign) with a meaning that is powerful or beautiful. Well, a couple of years ago, I was working in hostel in Taipei and I was sitting around talking about kanji with my co-worker one day. He's a Taiwanese man, a couple of years younger than me, and he was filling out some form when he got the idea that he would translate the kanji in his name to me. Long story short, going by the meaning of the kanji, his name is "yellow person" (and I love his parents for naming him that). So even if black or white people don't exist, at least we all now know that there is at the very least a yellow person in the world.

It's impossible to even attempt to keep up with everything. If you're a decent person you don't want to "offend" anyone but it's bound to happen over and over again by mistake and sometimes it's taken as an act of aggression. Some people are literally insane. Their view of the world is more like a little protective bubble around themselves. There are so many bad things happening every single day in our world and if you're living in the west you probably don't even know about it. You're protected and can be whoever you want to be yet you choose to be a terrible person. I have such a hard time seeing things getting better. But I have absolutely nobody to take my side, I feel like a Ghost or even much worse ironically, I do exist and I do feel, and sometimes to be truly honest with you, I think I feel more than them. @@overvault if all this is wrong “according to science” can you please explain to me why people from specific races and ethnicities are ON AVERAGE (very important) more or less susceptible to different illnesses and physical conditions, have different fat/muscle ratio, different kinds of sensitivity to substances and a myriad of other anatomical, genetic and physical differences that become scientifically relevant?
For example, East Asians generally possess a specific strain of DNA that makes them on average far more likely to develop alcohol insensitivity. They also have an average brain size of about 1410-1420cc, compared to 1357-1367 for Europeans and 1263-1273 for Africans, which can have a rather weak (although statistically measurable) influence on different neurological processes, according to the most extensive studies that measured it. There are also all of the biological differences that are simply due to the physiology of the human body, like the sensitivity to skin cancer between sub-Saharan Africans and Caucasians, or the sensitivity to lung cancer between South Asians and Native Americans (I repeat: ON AVERAGE and in identical environmental conditions).
All of this of course doesn’t change the fact that we are all equally human, but acting as if there are absolutely no differences between human populations who reproduced separately for so long that specific genetic traits became so preponderant between them to be visible, is just incorrect… and it’s kind of annoying that why we continuously acknowledge these very differences in zoology, and even in medicine with ourselves, for example by not using certain medications on certain racial/ethic groups due to higher chance of side effects occurring, yet we are supposed to never say ANYTHING about this out loud solely for political reasons.
… in fact, I would bet an arm and a leg that this is what worries you the most: the fact that acknowledging even the slightest difference between specific human groups might have eugenic implications, etc.

Excellently done! I used to teach first grade in California, my students were mainly almost all from Mexico, Central America, Tonga, and Samoa. Only two isolated incidents stand out regarding race. One day a student raised her hand to ask "teacher, why are you so white?" (I have very pale skin from mainly English/Irish background) My answer, therefore, was "I am white because my parents were white. I look like my parents, just as you look like your parents." However, that answer turned out to be problematic when the morher of one of my students furiously complained to our principle that one of the kids had callled her daughter "black." Of course I was called in to explain this horrible, disturbing circumstamce. You see, this particular mom was absolutely as white as me, wearas the child in question was also very definitely black--literarlly down to the roots of her hair. The priciple snd I both were puzzled--what is the problem here? The other child was not taunting or teasing, but merely making an observation, as kids do, and if I recall correctly he himself was Tongan and they had been having a calm, very age-appropriate conversation about differences in skin color. The black student did not seem hurt or upset by the incident The mom continued to be angry, and finally blurted out "I haven't told her yet that she's black!!!" My boss and I looked at each other not bothering to hide our asthonishment, then "La Sorella" as the parents called her (yup this was a Catholic school) mildly said to the mother "Well, I guess it's time for you to have that discussion."

the author presented the argument that there is no ''race of white or caucasian'' people rather badly. That ''whiteness'' it is a social construct which included over centuries more and more people first strictly considered non-white and is purposely nebulous as an identity for people with white skin color who are itself a very diverse group better identified by language, culture, etc.
In early US history only people of British ancestry were considered white, excluding people of white skin color like Germans, Austrians and Irish. After decades they got included and again later people with Spanish, Italian and Asian ancestry were included in this definition of whiteness.
The construct of whiteness historically stems from colonial societies, some even had a hierarchy based on how ''white'' people's skin was and is for example not a widely discussed term / idea in European societies.
( on the internet this might seem different because most discussions of identity are offline between people speaking their native language. non native speakers talking in English about white people on the internet are a minority in their country, society )
A fascist like Nick Fuentes most likely considers himself white when his Mexican ancestry would have excluded him 70 years ago, and the argument is that whiteness does not exist as an identity but rather as a construct to exclude people and to foster an in group / out group dynamic for people who feel their identity is threatened in some way.
In that sense there are no white people but a diverse group of cultures, societies, etc with people who have light skin tones.

I don't see what's completely wrong with the article to be honest? (I didn't read it but I watched the video). This is one of the rare times that I completely disagree with Metatron. I do think that using the term "white people" is very misleading (as is the case with "black people"), "white people" aren't the same people and they are sometimes closer to their "non-white" neighbors way more than other "whites". For example, a greek's lifestyle and mentality is way closer to his "brown" neighbors than a Norwegian living in the woods and a -20 degrees weather. The same can be said about an American and an East European, I'm pretty sure the East European will feel closer to their "non-white" neighbors vs. an American living in a completely different culture miles away. Just because a group of people have the same skin colour doesn't make them "one group".
So, in my opinion, saying "white people" don't exist and "black people" don't exist is a good thing. Because not all Europeans are the same, not all Africans are the same, some Europeans/Africans are closer to their non-European/non-African neighbors than they are to other Europeans/Africans. One example comes to my mind is that East Africans are closer to middle easterners than west Africans.

As someone who has studied linguistics, I give you a big thumbs-up on how aptly you described the character and function of "you know" as a so-called _pragmatic marker_ and also how you commented the semantic properties of adjectives (or words in general for that matter), in the sense that the usage of words doesn't by far always correspond to its "core" denotational meaning - as with "white" used to describe pale skin or a type of wine although neither is paper-white. You have also correctly noted that words change their meaning(s) or connotation(s) and/or add up new ones all the time, just as it went with the diachronic change of the conceptual content of the term "white race" - it has become far broader and more inclusive, from basically "Anglo-Saxon" to "anyone of European descent with light skin", as you said. These all are perfectly natural linguistic phenomena that functioned even in the oldest languages recorded; for example, the English word "dog" in the Old English period was used only for a specific kind/breed of dog, whereas the word "hund" (today "hound") was then the general term for a dog. Later, though, "hound" narrowed down to dog breeds used for hunting, while the word "dog" broadened its meaning to cover any kind of dog or canine animal in general. Your explanation would be legit perfect for a lexicology class.👍

I respect and agree with everything you've said in this video. However, I'd like to add that, while this Mosley did seem to have a political agenda, some people view race as an outdated social construct. Not that it doesn't exist, but that it is unnecessary. The only scenario I can imagine race being useful is when a description needs to be made, say for a missing person. And even then it is still not that helpful when, as you said, the terms white and black and asian have become so broad nowadays they don't really narrow the search down very much.
Especially when considering the bigoted and pseudo-scientifical origins and applications of race in colonial nations (apartheid comes to mind. The holocaust. Transatlantic slave trade, etc.) Obviously race is very real but the idea of categorizing people in this way I personally think is outdated and we as a human race would benefit greatly by moving on from it. Tell me what purpose does it really serve to identify as one race or another? What about mixed race people? Or ambiguous looking people. For example, a European with very dark skin and curly hair? Or an African with light skin and green eyes? Just my thoughts. Not trying to start any arguments, solely intelligent discourse. One love
