I don't know about Mexico but I don't believe Canelo could have caught traction in the US like he did if it wasn't for Golden Boy. I remember they had their whole PR machinery behind him when he was coming up, when he couldn't speak a word of English and was super shy. Let's be honest, it's not like he was producing performances in the ring that had the whole sports world buzzing, nor did he have this out of this world persona. Other than him being a red headed Mexican there was nothing about him that was so special that you could see him becoming a superstar at such an early age as he did, without the enormous push behind him from Golden Boy. In no way without Golden Boy could he have garnered a fight against Mayweather at the age of 22 or 23 on the heels of his tepid performances against Austin Trout and Shane Mosley.

That would not have happened if it wasn't for Oscar hyping Canelo up and getting fools to believe he had a chance but more importantly, Oscar was able to keep Canelo's stock up after that lackluster performance against Floyd. Any other fighter that would've gotten beaten like that by Floyd would've been discarded and forgotten about but Oscar kept pushing him to fight tough opposition until he got that deal with DAZN. Once Canelo signed that contract he reverted back into the coward he aways was and started picking easier opponents which lead to DAZN refusing to pay him his guarantee of 35 mil per fight unless he started fighting high profile names, more specifically, a 3rd fight with GGG in 2019 which Canelo wanted to avoid.. This disagreement in opponents led to Canelo suing DAZN .
What you fail to realize is the ducking tendencies were always there but Oscar knew how to give Canelo some courage as a fighter himself so love him or hate him, Oscar was the one who navigated Canelo's career and made sure to make fights that people wanted.

Then it became a mismanagement and they were going to use him to make millions while paying him a percentage of his worth. Oscar de la Hoya was with Bob arum and then sued Too Rank Bob Arum and started his own promotion. Floyd Mayweather himself was with Bob Arum and then left to Al Haymon while criticizing Dazn and then ended up fighting for dazn years later. This has been done before, fighter leave and hire other promoters to get the best opportunities and nobody says anything. As with most things in life there are two sides of a story and the truth lays somewhere inbetween, its true Canelo has alot to thank Oscar for early in his career, but looking at Oscars history over the past decade he’s known to be untrustworthy, unreliable, volatile which is why Goldenboy is nowhere near the force it once was, when a relationship becomes toxic you can’t hang around people who bring you down, loyalty works both ways.
