  • Omnium Gatherum is a melodic death metal band from Finland, founded already in 1996! Regardless of their long history in the field of metal music, they still have a relatively "ug" reputation in Finland even though they have a large international fan base. Sit down with me and Jukka Pelkonen to talk about all things Omnium Gatherum as well as Jukka's vocal journey!

I recently got into Omnium Gatherum and they are an awesome band, and this interview adds some context to what I'm listening to. Thank you for conducting it, and for subtitling (Finnish is a beautiful language but I can't say/understand more than a few sentences in it).

Obvious continum from this would be another part of great unison Insomium Gatherum, Niilo SevÀnen from Insomnium, who also is really nice and insightful guy plus one of the greatest growlers in scene.

Thanks for a great interview and nice stream! Loved your questions and Jukka's elaborations och the technicalities of his vocals. Really enlightening 👍. Got a phonecall, hence leaving without a word. Not due to bad manners 😜. Till next time đŸ‘‹đŸ˜ŽđŸ€˜

Great interview! I especially liked that the interview felt like there's no hurry in the world and both of you had enough time to express your thoughts. And no background music of any kind playing over the interview. If anything, the interview was too short.
As for the technical implementation of future interviews I would recommend figuring out how to activate focus lock of your camera and maybe apply digital noise reduction to the recorded audio, too. For example, open source software called Audacity should be good enough if you select some "silent" segment where neither of you talk but there's lots of background noise, and do Effect - Noise Reduction - Get Noise Profile, then close that dialog, select the whole audio track and do Effect - Noise Reduction - OK. That should result in pretty good background noise reduction if you apply e.g. 12 dB reduction instead of trying to remove background noise totally. (Trying to remove all background noise will often results in ringing artefacts in the final audio.) It seems that your gear (camera and those Rode mics) is otherwise just fine so you're good there.

Lopun fokuksista olen antanut noottia kamera-leidilleni, jonka piti olla ajan tasalla hoitamassa visuaalipuolta ja huolehtimassa nimenomaan mahdollisista tarkennushÀröistÀ.

@Anna Vaskelainen PS, Short clarification on my question on the use use of fry in speaking voice. I researched (Google level😉) vocal health specific to bass singing/extending your lower range, a little while back. And I did come by a scientific paper researching the use of fry in speaking, and some "anthropology aspects". The researcher concluded that their findings indicated vocal heath risks from extensive use. Also they found that the use of fry had increased "as a stylistic choice" especially among american women. Partly as a form of more "edgy/cool" sound/dialect, partly among business professionals as a way of projecting more authority with a lower, more male sounding voice. So my question regarding the use among Finnish males wasn't completely random. The idea just occurred to me while listening to the interview, that indeed when thinking back, I do have a strong suspicion that there are regional variations, with it being more common among Finnish males (very generalized). Of course I could be wrong, but it would almost be strange if there weren't regional/national differences.
As to the health aspects. From what I understood, fry does imply that the vocal folds do make a broader and longer contact during each oscilation. And that increased amount and force of contact, is the cause of higher risk of damage to the vocal folds. Especially since humans mostly talk much more than they sing. So bad speach habits have even larger potential for problems than bad singing practices. đŸ€· Just some amateur thoughts. 👋😅 Take care! 🍂🍃🍁

You are on point Niclas, I appreciate how you are finding this stuff our yourself! ^^
Dialect definitely affects as well as the overall personality of the one who is speaking/using his/her voice.

This comment has absolutely nothing to do with this video but I wanted to make sure that you read it and I don't know if you check back on comments still that you reacted to a while ago. I just finished watching Rob and Austin sing Nessun Dorma. I love your reaction. If you want an in-depth reaction and Analysis from an opera singer I have provided a link. The gentleman's name is Peter Barber and he is a trained opera singer. He gives them props and high praises for their performance. He was very impressed with the job that they did. Because it was so good he reacts to it as if they were true opera singers. I learned an awful lot from him.

I don't know if you have reacted to these videos but Freddie Mercury from Queen and Montserrat cabelli got together to write a song for the 1992 Olympics held in Barcelona which is montserrats hometown. They had such a good time and they really worked well together that they ended up doing an album titled Barcelona. I don't have the links but the title of the three songs that I've watched Barcelona Golden Boy At London and how can I go on at life. Sadly Freddy passed away in 91 so he was not able to sing Barcelona when the Olympics started in '92. They did it through a video.
