100% we have to support devs like this.
If we're willing to give out £100 for AAA games, then so be it. I will support someone that has spent years developing what would take 400 people to make (and rush it out and leave it for bug fixes/patches)
Edit: I'm being mis-interpreted. There are plenty of gamers that buy expensive amounts of games. Don’t tell me if it was a good game like Baldur Gate 3, you wouldn’t spend money for it, of course you would because you know that’s a Labour of love as opposed to a game that’s being developed for years, has multiple project managers and made for a quick buck. It is an expensive hobby. For all gamers nowadays. Everything is expensive, but doesn’t mean things aren’t cheap either. I'm not going to lie about that. But my message is aimed towards an GENERAL audience that does this. I'm saying go buy Manor Lords as it is 100% worth it.

Glad you touched on the fact that there is literally no reasonable justification for pre-ordering being a thing anymore. I haven't pre-ordered a game since like 2009 when I still bought physical games and wanted to make sure I got my copy from the brick and mortar game shop on day 1. There's no good argument for it, and pre-order bonuses aren't a good argument either, they shouldn't exist in the first place, it's just a scummy marketing trick to get you to purchase a product that isn't even done yet, it's a way to cash in on hype and it's been used in the past to ensure games that (usually massive) companies knew had a lot of hype to them but weren't going to meet expectations were able to at least turn a profit from pre-orders before the big rug pull when consumers got their hands on what was known by the company to be a subpar product.
Don't fall for pre-ordering. Early access is one thing, look into the company, look into the game. My rule of thumb for buying an early access game is "does this game look like I'd be happy with it if development completely stopped as soon as I bought it, despite being incomplete?".
Personally with Manor Lords I'm hoping they are sitting on an update that will be pushed along with the public release in a few days, just to give us a little more we haven't seen. Otherwise I might wait at least a little longer.

Love the video. Balanced and reasonable as normal.
The reason early access is problematic is the combination of two things I think
    1. You have games that appear, get hyped, get money and the die - cash grabs (?)
    2. People don't seem to know what early access actually is and complain that things aren't working or complete. I even saw a video the other day for No Rest For The Wicked that said "It's not ready" - of course it isn't because it's early access.
Anyway, keep up the good work.

    @heathclark318 Před měsícem +8

1000% yes, I would have bought it when it was demo released and been fine with it.
    1. Because of the developer and what he had been able to implement even then, years ago at this point.
    2. Sharing his vision on what he wanted it to be, which just so happens to be what many of us have been wanting for years. Banished style building game with a bit of real time battles.
    3. Breaking away from aaa publishers and promoting raw talent is what gaming used to be about. Hence all the kickstarters, some good some very bad, but we desire more.
Just to name a few. Going to LOVE this game and all that it will become in the years to come both with development, dlc and mods. This is going to be incredible and could be a watershed moment for gaming as it pushes those above abusive aaa companies to get back to their roots and find that passion, or find your player numbers along with your relevance go by the wayside.

@justinthomas85 100% agreed. This truly looks like a passion project. Heck, he's even trying to tone down the hype. Who does that?! Given the genre, the demo, and what we know of the dev, even with limited funds, I want to support this type of individual/group in every way possible. The city building is so nice and fluid which is what the clear focus was on and it shows, looks amazing and I look forward to building a medieval settlement in 2024 graphics lol. Been really into colony sims last few years moved on from city builders because the level of control/automation Rimworld or Dawn of man gives is better than the big city sims but having an armed force and bandit raids will be the perfect thing to scale it from small settlements to entire villages or towns.

It is hard for someone who has had absolute control to let some of that go, too. Especially when it is their passion project.

@thebiglebrowski3695 I don't mean like get a full studio but higher some dev to implement his ideas. I mean all depends on cost if its more than 25 then seems abit steep for what it is and I'm assuming as a single dev, updates will take a very every long time

      @Yt81818 Před měsícem +1

@thebiglebrowski3695 don't get me wrong the game idea is great I've been waiting ages for it but with only 1 dev for updates and a full cost game like 30 and over just seems abit of a stretch for me. Also no road map so he could literally just add the ability to add a castle and call it finished. It's needs a road map as in what content will be added on full release. As good as the concept the game needs more stuff to do. Proper ai enemy's that build up along side you in their own territory not just a baron

@Yt81818 Oh I agree in a lot of ways. Said myself in a comment that if it is any more than £25 then I won't be buying it. Plenty of indie games are less than that even when released like Rimworld and Kenshi.

@thebiglebrowski3695 that's why he needs to invest some of what he makes off early access sales back into the game with extra devs and so on, I'd just hate to see it go to waste and not get the love it deserves cause it could be game of the year if done right

I already have Game Pass ultimate so this is an easy decision for me to give it a try. I am really glad for this video because I think it does a good job setting expectations. Knowing that it's more like a medieval Sim City with small scale AoE looking battles instead of the wild and craziness of CK3 politics and empire building is great info. It's so impressive what independent developers can do nowadays, and supporting great ones like this will lead to so many more amazing games.
As for Early Access, I think it's basically something people need to decide for themselves on a case by case basis since you're basically preordering and signing up for a beta test at the same time. If you don't trust the developer to use Early Access to make the best game possible or if you're not convinced that the end product will be something you like, then don't spend your money. But if you have developers like Greg, Larian, or Super Giant with Hades 2 who have a good track record, then support them!

Honestly, from what I've seen on dozens of streams and gameplay videos... the game in its current state offers 200 or more hours of playtime before I've even done everything that is there to do currently in it.
And if that's not worth a couple dozen bucks, then I don't know what is.
Game looks and sounds beautiful. Building is slow paced, free form and relaxed. I can build several villages all around the map and level them all up individually. Battles look and feel and sound absolutely epic, despite being only small territorial skirmishes with bandits and one other lord's mercenaries. ..
I can fire this game up after coming home from work and just have fun building and occasionally battling enemies.
Even if new features do not get added for another 5 years... still worth the money.

Spend most turns building, consolidating and feeding your peasant than gain a bit of land. Combat was RTS like in Lord of the Realm just like Manor Lord, but not quick base building like Starcraft or the like. Great insight.

Greg needs to make a mod kit 3 months prior to full release so people can get ready for the full release with official mod support to get the biggest boost in variety while he's still working on his own patches & others can make their own DLC sized mods, that would be awesome and a great way to keep the fire kindled for this game come time for full release. Also somebody will make an increased pop mod alongside a grand military mod so us total war fans can have our total war despite the dev's comments on it.

There is a good chance that this game will sell well and the dev can afford to get more people in and invest into the product. That is the risk of early access, though. Devs can take the money and run, or they can invest into the product and make it the best they can.
Hopefully the latter will apply here and the game will come out of early access as a polished labour of love. It's clearly not a cash grab as it would have been released long before this if it were.

Somewhere between £15-£25 seems reasonable to me, and I have bought similarly developed games (Kenshi, Rimworld, Zomboid, Banished) for around that price. I have seen suggestions of £50-60 which would be too much imo.

The only game that I would compare this to is Ostriv. Likewise Ostriv was a single Dev, from Kharkiv, and still developing his game in the midst of a war.
Whereas Ostriv is set in 1730's on, Manor Lords is set in 1400s?
Ostriv has more of an overview, and tends toward City Simulation.
Manor Lords seems to be much more trading etc and Town simulation.
I believe that the 2 Devs have contact with each other and there are clearly simularities between them. ML is more photo realistic. Ostriv is more town oversight.
I expect to be playing both for a long time.

To buy it or not is simply not a question at this point. Early gameplays look good. And if we can spend on AAA bullshit these days, we surely can support a passion project of one person who seems to have done an amazing job.
My only question is will this have Mod support? Because then we're gonna have endless time settings, maps etc. Only then it will become a dream come true that M&B (which if I remember correctly was a 2 people project at the time) became with mods. And I'm sure someone would be crazy enough to mod in the whole Europe map on a smaller scale. As long as I can dream, I will! :p

I'm glad nearly access has been able to survive the hate from people who don't understand the tradeoff you make getting EA. If somebody are sure they want it based on what they see I am confident they wouldn't even regret a pre-order, even if I am against pre-ordering based on principle.
