My great grandfather was a high school teacher. Both of mom's parents were college professors. Grandfather was the college VP. My aunt is a college professor. Both of my parents are retired public school teachers, and my sister and I are both public school teachers.
That's over 200 years of combined professional education experience coming together to tell you I couldn't agree with your statement more.
Education is like a flight simulator. It's a good way to start your training, but at some point you have to actually land a plane yourself if you want to say you're a pilot.

      @AtomicArtumas Před 3 lety +7

@@spaceracer23 Personally, I'd say it's largely dependent on field.
Things like Arts? There's really not much of anything you can't learn in a classroom. Playing Piano in class and playing Piano in front of people for money is literally no different, both expect the same results in the end. (speaking from experience there)
And a LOT of stuff is similar - Programming, etc.
But other stuff, like "management school" and whatnot, is very largely different, and doesn't directly translate in really any real way.
It gives you the technical knowledge to be ABLE to do the job, but doesn't tell you at all HOW to do the job.
It's why I've always thought the last year of all degrees should basically just be a "mock job" - Every student being assigned a position, and literally just doing the kind of work you'd normally do in that field, but with completely arbitrary "tasks" so to speak - If your job doesn't require results provided by someone else, just have like arbitrary math problems or whatnot. And switch positions at least twice in the year, so each person gets to be part of the lower and upper parts of the field.
Obviously doesn't work with ALL things, but I think it would really help with office-job-type education. Give them a small taste of what working in the field is ACTUALLY like, with no direct repercussions/hard deadlines/uncontrolled environment.

I think so too. I dropped out of the university. I got my initial job in a small company from a connection, but after 3 yrs I applied for an entry level position in a big corporation depending solely on my experience and I'm doing things your regular bachelor/master degree holders are doing. I keep up with the degree holders just fine and getting promotions at normal, steady pace. I come to a conclusion that maybe 60% of what you learnt in university doesnt help you in workplace (unless for technical stuff like doctors and engineers... Even then my doctor friend said a lot what they learnt in uni is completely different from whst they experience during recidency and she had to re-learn some stuff all over again).

TBH, in the beginning of the story, I could very much feel how miserable this woman felt when she discovered that her job was nothing she could actually get herself to do let alone enjoy as a career in spite of all the money and effort she had put into learning the ropes - been there, done that myself.
However, this woman did not react to this disappointing and sobering realization about her self in a mature way: I was out of my previous dream job (as I had mistakenly imagined it to be) within four months during which I didn´t miss a single day, worked hard and earned the appreciation of coworkers and boss. My resignation at the earliest possible moment (contract clause) actually came as a surprise to them, they all had considered me a valuable staff member they wanted to keep. (Then went back to Uni, got another degree, have successfully and happily worked in this new field for over 15 years by now and will hopefully do so until I retire. Working comes so easy if you enjoy what you are doing!)

If he was one of the top 5 in his class, he surely would know that sending a threatening worded letter on the law firm's letterhead without the approval of any senior partner would get back to them eventually and royally screw with his career.

I remember a story of my elementary school teacher who got fired after a lost lawsuit.
She sued the school that fired her because they were contractably forced to cover for any legal fees that would come up that were connected with the job.
The kicker? About three weeks later one of the students who had been sick at the time of the lawsuit basically just broke the lawsuit in seconds since their testimony basically was enough proof that what she had been blamed for (which was some for of verbal abuse towards the kids) had never happened and it was literally just two parents being angry because their oh so precious child would never have done anything wrong. She won both and went on to become my elemntary school's teacher and would stay there for well over 40 years.

Very much so. They're telling the story as if they're some third party, but for a third party they sure know a lot of things that would probably be private. Seems to me like the only person who would actually know all that information would be the principal herself.

Ugh... this one hurt a lot.
My little brother is autistic and my family had to fight tooth and nail to find a reputable school for him to attend so he has the best chance at learning new skills and improving on the ones he already has. He’s nonverbal so sometimes explaining something to him is difficult and unless you know him or have an immaculate understanding of autism and how it works then getting through to him is incredibly difficult. Not his fault at all, but it meant that he couldn’t go to the same school as me.
I’m incredibly protective of my brother, he’s an absolute gentle giant who’s absolutely obsessed with Spyro the Dragon (we played it together as kids, PS1 era) and despite having little to no grasp on the English language, let alone written word, he’s been able to complete the games 111%. All the extra hidden details, all of it. I’m always in awe of how he adapts and how intelligent he is. I love him so much.
That being said, it can be difficult to get my brother to do other activities. That’s fairly typical, but when it’s communicated to him correctly he can do so much. That’s why I’m always in just utter awe at the dedication and patience that the workers at his current college, as well as the previous schools he’s gone to have been. They’ve done so much for him and I can’t thank them enough for taking the time to do one on one work with him so he can build up these skills for his future. The idea of a Karen just... behaving like that is disgusting. Working with disabled children isn’t a “toxic environment”, it’s incredibly rewarding as long as you’re not a self centred piece of shit. A lot of nasty and cruel people (school bullies) often go into nursing and child care because they enjoy the imbalance of power in their favour towards whoever they’re looking after, whether it’s a sick person who depends on them for help, a disabled person who needs aid or a child that can’t even walk. I’m 100% convinced that the Karen was one of those people, and it sickens me.
In conclusion, whilst schools and colleges aimed at teaching and helping disabled students can be “messy” and sometimes dangerous (if the student has anger issues or has trouble expressing their frustration, thankfully my brother hasn’t hit anyone in his life and he’s a true gentle giant) you learn this and how to cope with that personally when you go through the motions to become a carer / teacher at one of these establishments. Me thinks that Karen thought she could get away with doing the bare minimum because a majority of her students may not have been able to speak or communicate or let alone understand that they were being neglected on an academic level.
I’m just thankful to all of my brothers previous and current tutors who’ve done so much for not just him, but my family as well. It’s a truly selfless job and you can tell that the people working have a real passion to aid disabled folk.
