And Candy himself said that the studio heavily under-promoted the film, so of course it wasnt his fault and yes indeed he deserved better. This is a fun little movie. Not as good as Planes, Trains and Automobiles but it was fun.

True story. In 2005, an acquaintance of mine referred to a small member as a "little fallacy" and did the little gesture John Candy did in the movie when he said that line. I stopped him right there and said, "Is that a 'Who's Harry Crumb?' reference?!". He confirmed it was. Sadly, I was the only person out of 20 or so people in the room that got the reference.

That clip of him talking about his own movie failing is really interesting when compared to talk show appearances today. Only the Lonely is one of Candy and director Chris Columbus’ very best films on both of their individual filmographies but yes it is sadly one of the most overlooked efforts of both men’s work. But it is one of the very best things both of them ever did. It also proved Columbus could make a good romantic dramedy. He tried again with the forgettably bad Nine Months four years later. That was a bad romcom. But OTL is the polar opposite and shows their strengths as actor and filmmaker.

This is by far the funniest movie I've ever watched. It's brutally funny, there's just no part where you get a break from laughing. You're still laughing at half a dozen previous things, when something else hit you. When I first saw this, it was on home video in the early 90's. The amount of times we had to pause the tape, because we just couldn't cope with how funny it was and needed a moment to take a breath. When he crashes the car he's just bought, that's the hardest I have ever laughed in my life. That tape was paused for well over five minutes. Absolute hidden gem of a movie, nobody comes close to John Candy as a comedy performer.

I love this channel, because it introduces me to movies that went under the radar for me.
I feel like this movie got overlooked by Uncle Buck, and other big movies that year like Batman and Ghostbusters II,
but I am glad I finally watched this movie, as it's a classic, slapstick comedy, and watching anything with John Candy is a pure delight!

Spot on, Joe. I've always loved this movie. I saw it in the theatre when it came out, though I was probably too young to get all the references at the time. I later had it on VHS and it would become my all-time favorite John Candy movie. Thanks for shining the spotlight on it... still waiting for a "Man Who Knew Too Little" video, though, btw. :-)
