Without a Clue is a 1988 British comedy film directed by Thom Eberhardt and starring Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley. It is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters from the Sherlock Holmes stories but in this version Sherlock Holmes is an actor hired by Doctor Watson to play the part of the brilliant detective, so that Watson can maintain his reputation as a doctor. - Zábava
When you hear about a Sherlock Holmes movie starring Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley, I highly doubt the first genre you'd think of is comedy, but that's what we have here.
This movie made me wish Caine did a lot more comedy.
"It's a shame that Jeffrey Jones turned out to be... well.. Jeffrey Jones," sums up everything about his career downfall.
Wasn't familiar about what happened until I Googled him... oh boy.
Why did I know that was what it was going to be before I even googled it??
Ducking sicko...
It really does sum it up. When I saw him I thought "wow, he's been in so many great movies, I'd have liked to see a dedicated video about his career. If only I could enjoy it without the taint of his criminal record." So this felt like a good substitute. Very classy.
Kingsley is so versatile: mafia boss, Indian peace activist, Waffen SS officer, Anne Frank's dad, angry British doctor--and Michael Caine is amazing too!
And Potiphar
And French secret agent frog.
And an actor playing a supervillain and a chess teacher and Vice President of the USA and a Jewish accountant in Poland 🖖💯✌
And senior member of British Police
And Bagheera in 2016.
I grew up reading the Sherlock Holmes books, I taught my self to read so I could read them and this is one of my all time favorite films. A Sherlock Holmes comedy that is funny and also feels respectful to the books and is clearly made by people who love Holmes and Watson as much as I do!
This movie deserves too be more popular.
It’s the best Sherlock comedy for sure
I love this movie as a devoted Sherlockian, I always remember that scene where Watson becomes exasperated with Holmes and he’s ready to change the title of his stories to something like
‘The Doctor’s Files’ .
This being a British Film - if I remember right - they even get in a 'Doctor Who???' joke xD
I loved 'Without A Clue' from first sight and it even managed to get some phrases in my everyday vocabulary.
Ben Kingsley was a phenomenal Watson who I would have loved to see in a serious adaption also.
Michael Caine of course is great, too, but I think I would have loved John Cleese a tick better in the role of Holmes.
"Hello, my name is Sherlock Holmes. Not many people know about that."
This brings to mind his role as Trevor Slattery in Iron Man 3, a sort of reversal of this premise.
Maybe Shane Black is also a fan of this movie. Maybe Christopher Nolan as well since Michael Caine is also doing the "let's get some idiot actor to distract from the real deal" in The Prestige.
I like it when Trevor Slattery says "Bloody hell, bloody hell!"
@@MrTBoneSF This film straight away made me think of the Prestige
For another hilariously underrated Michael Caine film, I recommend "Noises Off."
Play is a masterpiece. Movie is not.
The play is beautiful, the movie is...worth watching, but not great.
Shortly before the world went to hell, I saw an excellent production of that play.
The film is brilliant... no question.
I liked that film. Michael Caine is brilliant in the role of director.
I have loved this film since I was a kid watching at my grandparents. I have it on dvd and watch it at least once a year, it’s a great period comedy
TCM needs to hire you. These vids are amazing
You ought to watch the 1992 movie "Stay Tuned" starring John Ritter and Pam Dawber if you haven't already, that'd be great for this show.
Great suggestion. Can’t believe how many bad reviews it got.
@@sugreev2001 It’s not really that bad, I really loved the ever loving crap out of the movie. Especially the amazing animation sequence done by the late Chuck Jones.
Jeffrey Jones pops ups there too.
Love It
I'm sure he's seen it before and will probably do a video on it. I asked him if he would do a clip on the movie 'Nothing but Trouble'. He said he plans to and he eventually did but it took him like 4 or 5 other releases on other movies or people. So who knows, he probably will do the movie 'Stay Tuned', but get ready to wait about 3-4 months to maybe see it if he decides to do it.
Your comment on Jeffrey Jones is exactly my sentiments. It really is too bad... As usual, an amazing video and seeing Micheal Cane in this role is so unusual and I love it.
I grew up on this VHS tape with the Michael Caine head out of the hat cover, lol. I had no idea anyone else even knew this movie exists! Thank you! This is also my favorite Sherlock Holmes movie.
I had a multi-year quest trying to find this movie.
I first found it in a DVD collection at Walmart, when I was a kid, bundled with other detective movies and reading the description on the back totally sold me, but I couldn't buy it that day so I put it back.
I never found it again, and I couldn't remember the title, so I had to search for it using keywords from the summary, and that proved fruitless. Not even googling every Sherlock Holmes movie made helped out, and that list included silent and non-english films.
It was my sister who eventually found it, in a collection of Michael Cain's more obscure works, and I ordered it online immediately. There is no grand finale to this story, but it will ensure that this movie stays in my memory forever as a story to go with a story.
Dude it was free on CZcams all along!
I watched it as a kid in the late 80s/early 90s on television. And I have it on dvd. Great movie!
Can’t wait for your take on “Stay Tuned” and “Mom and Dad Save the World”.
I just watched this because of your video. I love it so much. "It was a night like any other, when suddenly a knock came at the door. I opened it, and there were these Manchurians, doing a rather festive Carribean dance"
Somebody should've told Will Ferrel and John C. Reilly
that there was already a Holmes & Watson comedy to spare us that abortion they made.
To be fair, I've only seen clips from both those films - from the clips this makes Holmes and Watson look like a money laundering scheme.
Holmes and Watson is so bad, Jesus Christ!
Will Ferrell and John C Reilly should be ashamed of themselves. It’s one of the worst things I’ve ever seen. It’s so bad I can’t watch anything either of them are in since that movie.
somebody in Hollywood should stop casting Will Ferrel in anything. Problem sovled.
@@Kornknealious He can work well if given an appropriate role, like Mugatu. Casting him for Sherlock Holmes is.... inappropriate.
There's several in fact, including one staring Gene Wilder.
"Moriarty?!"
"Relax, he knows you're an idiot."
"Oh, thank god."
"They Might Be Giants" is perhaps the best faux-Holmes film (with George C. Scott) -- along with "Zero Effect", both are almost-classics.
I'm sooooooooooooo happy to hear someone, especially a CZcamsr I follow talk about this wonderful gem of a film that is so underrated! Thank you!!
Oh man, I loved this movie as a kid. I watched it over and over again. I quoted it as a kid and I still do to this day. Thanks for making this video on this underrated gem.
Another Sherlock Holmes parody you should explore is The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother, with Gene Wilder.
He talks about it in his Gene Wilder video.
I used to watch it on VHS all the time when I was a kid.
I love this movie, I watch it every Christmas with my family, it's full of laughs. And I used to live near to Barton Street in Westminster which doubled for Baker Street in the movie.
I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, especially the renditions that are faithful to the original stories (Jeremy Brett) but this film is a pure gem and so much fun! Love it and have watched it 100 plus times!!
This channel is a goldmine for hidden classics like this. Love your work, bro.
This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. How could you go wrong with Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley?
One of the best cinematic takes on Sherlock.Holmes and John Watson.
The script's idea that Watson is the real detective and Holmes nothing more than a know nothing facade is a terrific twist.
Ben Kingsley is absolutely first rate in this film and Michael Caine actually has a chance to demonstrate he could be an effective comedy actor..
I think it's seeing films like this fall that eventually led me to end my tenure as a film reviewer.
If well made comedies like this don't have a chance, then it's not worth looking at the rot.
I remember being sick at home with the flu and my mother rented the movie to cheer me up. I still remember my surprise when it turned out that Watson was the brains.
This movie is in my top 5 all time favorite movies.
This was one of your topics where I sat upright in my chair, nestled with a smile, and eagerly waited for any opinion of it! I got this movie as a blind buy, back in the 2000s, and it’s also become my favorite Holmes comedy. Thanks for spreading this to more people!
I love this movie! “His real name is Arty Morty!” Die laughing!
"I've got it! His real name is Arty Mori"!
I've never even heard of this and I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan! this sounds delightful, what a clever premise. and looks like great casting.
Thanks for the recommendation. My partner and I watched this tonight and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Slapstick comedy taking itself seriously. Perfect!
Dutch (Driving Me Crazy) was released on LaserDisc, and typically sells for between $6 and $10. Without a Clue was also released on LD and typically sells for even less.
Good to know, since laserdisc is standard in 8.6 out of 10 households!
While it's true the aftermarket exists, it's sad when things go out of print.
I always thought an LD would make for a neat wall clock btw...
HATS OFF ENTERTAINMENT is my absolute favorite new channel right now! Love you, bro! Its awesone to know there are other people out there that grew up watching the same obscure movies i did!! Keep up the great work, dude!!!
I think the reason this movie is so good is the relationship between Holmes and Watson and how it develops.
I'd forgotten about this film but now I remember really enjoying it when I was younger.
I must try and get a copy and watch it again
This was a family favorite when I was a kid. Actually, this may have even been my intro to the Sherlock Holmes and John Watson characters, lol. The fact that this movie bombed and Caine and Kinglsey never did a sequel is a crime.
I'm anxious to hear your thoughts on another one of my family's favorites - Oscar (1990) with Sylvester Stallone.
Oscar is funny and also a utube favorite
I discovered this one by accident. There was a family owned video store, in the small town where I lived. It seemed very well done & I'm surprised it never caught on. It really was a novel approach to the story, without being a standard parody adaptation of the characters.
Arty Morty!!! This is such a great movie, non stop fun!! Great review, thank you for sharing!!
This channel deserves so much more attention
"I've got it! His real name is Arty Morty!"
I've always loved this film, and Lysette Anthony is one of my all-time crushes
I recommend this film to people all the time. It’s marvellous.
Thanks so much for the suggestion. I immediately found the movie. It’s hilarious! I loved it! Great work as usual. Mahalo Nui Loa and Aloha
Agree completely. An utterly delightful re-telling of Sherlock Holmes with flawless casting. Certainly one of my favorites!. Michael - South Africa
How about They Might Be Giants for inverting the usual Holmes story? A magical film.
For a second I thought you were referring to the band, and then I remembered that that's where they got their name.
That's another good one, as is "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother".
@@gabe_s_videos I thought it was a _Don Quixote_ reference
@@christopherwall2121 That's where that movie got it's title (and even then, it's a bible reference).
This film is played regularly in England on a television channel called Talking pictures and in fact is quite well-known. So like you said if you don't want to buy the Blu-ray DVD you can watch it on there
I am so glad that I am not the only one who digs this movie. Funny as hell.
I can't believe I've never heard of this.
Thanks, I had almost forgotten Holmes and Watson existed.
Watson being overshadowed by Holmes, own fictional creation, is really meta because Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had the same experience irl
I remember really liking this movie as a kid. Never knew it wasn't popular. I can see why serious Sherlock Holmes fans might have a problem with it, but that doesn't seem like it should be a huge segment of the public.
Im a fan of Sherlock Holmes stories, and love this too. I think there should always be room for creative interpretations in genres and franchises, when they are done well of course
always loved this movie
I even have a soft spot for 'The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother'
Always enjoy your pieces on these little known movies and for bringing them into light. I also love how you give people just a taste of what the movie is about as into not spoil the experience of watching it for the first time. You often have me going through my physical media collection to revisit these overlooked and underappreaciated films. Will be watching this one again today.
Huzzah! What a wonderful and underrated comedy from the late 80's Caine and Kingsley are amazing in this one. Excellent work again, Hats off to Hats Off Entertainment.
I absolutely loved this film growing up. Thanks for giving it some much deserved love!
Clue (1985) is one of the most underrated comedies ever.
Yup very funny film.
Please do an episode on Toys. My favorite robbin williams movie that no one seems to remember
That was weirdly on TV a lot when I was younger, like a decade or so after it came out
Thank God, I bought my DVD of Dutch over 10 years ago 🙏🏻 Please review Clifford from 1994 starring Martin Short and Charles Gordin. The director/writer also produced Jimminy Glick on Comedy Central.
Good news! Joe did a video on Clifford last year!
Without A Clue was one of the first Sherlock Holmes movies, I saw as a kid and I loved it. Looking at it now though I can see just how campy the movie can be. Still it does have it's enjoyable moments.
Nice video! This is the first of your Almost Cult Classics that I've seen before. Of all the Holmes stories I've watched/read, I'd definitely say this film does the "Watson is actually the smart one" trope the most justice.
The only movie he's done an (almost) cult classics on that I've seen is Mousehunt.
Stoked you covered this! Thank goodness my Dad found this on Vhs yrs ago, it's Fantastic!
Love this movie! This came out in my early days of being a Sherlock Holmes fan, and I loved all the little things it poked playful fun at 🤣. Had it on VHS and watching it numerous times.
Also great music by Henry Mancini 🎶👍
Fantastic film! With 2 great actors and a great setting, it's just amazing!
I sought this movie out years ago. Bought a three pack dvd of Holmes movies so I could watch it. I remember enjoying it. Should definitely rewatch it.
Saw this in the theater and loved it though my parents were not so impressed.
Thank you, especially, for doing justice to the mambo joke by including it in its entirety.
try "The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother" my fav
Mycroft!
Also an underrated classic❗ As is Start The Revolution Without Me and The Last Remake Of Beau Geste❗
Oh yes, an underrated comedy.
@@katarinazelenova4748 Sigerson!
Sheer Luck Holmes.
I love this movie. You always pick great movies to focus on. Totally within the era I fell in love with film.
I am so glad you brought this one up! This was my childhood favorite!
I never tire of this movie. . "His real name is Arty Morty!" makes me smile every time.
The wife and I just watched this because of this video and we loved it - I swear this video series is such a wonderful idea, we’ve loved all the suggestions so far
I love that film! The railway station scene where Sherlock "interrogates" a witness is gold.
I LOVE this film, always have, always will.
This film is one of my classic comedy clubs you couldn’t of asked for a better cast a bit of script and two actors that seem to roll off each other so well I would recommend anybody to watch it its brilliant and like Lauren Hardy it’s a film you can watch it again and again because every time you watch it you see something you didn’t notice the first time
I love how the plot of this movie is basically an even more insane, fictional version of how Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes, then was forced to revive him for more stories. XD
I remember seeing this when I was a kid. I remember very little about it except how clever I thought the premise was
I'd forgotten how much I liked the score of this film.
One of my favourite films of all time. It can be watched on CZcams
This was my introduction to Sherlock Holmes. This was one of a handful of VHS tapes we actually owned when I was little.
I was so confused when I watched other Sherlock Holmes movies and discovered this was not how Holmes & Watson were originally characterized.
The plot of using a fake detective makes me think of Remington Steele.
This channel is great. Been adding a lot of stuff to my watch list. Great stuff to watch with the family.
@Comedy Room what? Do you think that degenerates don't have families? How simple minded of you
I'm always glad to see this film get recognition.
I love Without a Clue and wish we had more from Kingsley & Caine! I like the soundtrack and pub song too!
Smart movie, it seems to take elements from the novel and Arthur's real life disdain of his character he initially "killed off" Sherlock
I "discovered" this film last year. It's pretty good if you're not looking for something with pretensions of being a serious Holmes story. It's played for fun and is enjoyable on that level. Michael Caine is hilarious! Thank you for giving this overlooked film a shout, Joe. PS - If you can bear to review another Jeffrey Jones movie, I echo the commenter below who suggested Mom & Dad Save the World. It's very silly, and features Teri Garr, Jon Lovitz, and aliens designed by Stan Winston.
I'm always excited when I get notified for your new posts! Keep up the great content. 🤘
I'd like to think of this as a story Itzhak Stern wrote for himself to cope with working for Amon Goeth.
I love this movie. Michael Caine is absolutely hilarious.
That mamba/mambo gag was pretty great.
Another excellent film. Glad to see you bring it up!
This picture is marvelous fun and indeed one of the best Sherlock films despite not being a true Conan Doyle adaptation. It makes a great double feature with the best Holmes film Billy Wilder’s PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES.
I was hoping someone would mention that gem.
@@peterconlon8234 I always link the two in my mind. It’s interesting we rarely have true Conan Doyle film adaptations. For me the best Holmes films are the ones that at least have the spirit alive even if it has a differing flavor. My other favorite is Hammer’s Hound of the Baskervilles.
I vaguely remember this when it came out, but would love to watch being a huge Holmes fan. I also recommend The Private Eyes with Don Knott's and Tim Conway.
My missus will love this. Cheers Joe!
This was the first Sherlock Holmes movie I ever watched when it was shown on Egyptian television in the 90s.
