The John Candy as Orson Welles skit is way funnier when you realize he was making fun of the Frozen peas commercial before most people knew that audio existed.
I watched Delirious as a kid. I was fascinated by the idea of using the typewriter to change reality. I was also amused and disturbed by the horrible things he did to the male lead (?) of the show, especially when his teeth and hair started falling out! I always assumed this was another Candy classic. What a shame that it wasn't appreciated.
Jack didn't do those things to Blake. Most of the action in Ashford Falls takes place on its own. The people have free will except when Jack actively subverts it. Doctor Kirkwood was the one who gave Blake the pills to try and kill him, after Rachel seduced him into it.
I first saw this as a kid, too! We had it on tape and it was a family favorite. But he didn’t do that stuff to the guy. The guy was the brother of the main lady, and if I remember correctly, the other writer (the one the show hired behind his back in the real world,) had written that the lady was slowly poisoning him. Hence the teeth and stuff.
@@PoutingTrevor I had never even heard of the movie Delirious until just a few years ago. When I watched it, I could see why I had never heard of it… it Wasn’t that good. It was definitely one of John Candy’s weaker movies. While Uncle Buck, Great Outdoors, Plains Trains and Automobiles, Summer Rental etc were definitely classics of his… Delirious Wasn’t one of them
I actually caught this on Amazon Prime last month! So they’re still working it through the rotation. Which I’m grateful for. This is one of the “sick day” movies I always caught on daytime television on the days I stayed home sick from school. John Candy was one of the warmest, most lovable screen presences in cinema. It was great watching him as a hero and romantic lead.
I was going to comment the same! My wife and I watched this about a month or two ago on Prime. I had never seen this movie or heard of it before seeing it on prime. We both enjoyed it.
Similarly, I just caught this streaming free a couple of years ago. I really enjoyed it. I worked in a video rental store in the early 90s and despite it being a PG comedy with a highly marketable lead, we only got a single rental copy. To put that in context, we got two copies of "Once Upon a Crime".
The premise of this movie borrows from the greek myth Pygmalion and the Twilight Zone episode, “A World of His Own”. Ruby Sparks also did something similar, though that one took advantage more of the emotional connection of a writer and his creation. Movies about soap operas are rare because it’s difficult to take the more hammy kind of storytelling and put it within a cinematic world. I could actually see Delirious working better today ironically as a series rather then a movie
Not only that, but he had ambitions of directing. He even directed a straight-to-video movie called _Hostage for a Day_ which was (unfortunately) released posthumously.
This channel, as niche as it is, has quickly become a favorite of mine. I haven't heard of half the stuff you post about but your relaxed presentation is just so appealing. Superb work.
Side note - I love that dreamy, foggy look some 80s/90s films had. That really shiny, dreamlike film texture is a thing of its own. Adds another layer to the "fantasy" element in these older flicks.
God, John Candy was such a treasure. I really enjoyed this movie when I saw it waaaay back. I never even thought about the Groundhog Day comparison but it's totally valid, and now I can't unsee that... I can't wait to see more of this series. I'm looking forward to one about Only the Lonely (my favorite John Candy movie because absolutely I love him and I have a thing for Ally Sheedy) and The Great Outdoors.
I love this film - there are so many small details in it, that makes it even funnier, for example that Raymond Burrs character has the same cable tv problems and is waiting for the cable guy later in the movie as Jack had at the very beginning 😀 always makes me laugh out loud
I had never even heard of this movie until a few years ago. When I watched it I could see why I had never heard of it, because it sucked. It definitely wasn’t one of his best movies
I found this movie years ago on DVD randomly with the John Candy cover and decided to get it just because I had never heard of a movie and it became a must watch movie in my family for a long time. Sadly I think that disc is gone now because of every thing that happened in my life a few years ago with a house fire but I still remember it from time to time and quote it everyday!
I rewatched this on Tubi last month and it still holds up. From Prince doing the song Delirious to the dance number set to James Brown's This is a Man's World. A classic. We miss you John
I actually saw this movie in theaters. I saw it several times after, especially when Comedy Central played in on rotation, and it got better every time to me.
I'm so glad I saw this. I used to watch Delirious all the time as a kid. That's not an exaggeration. I'd go down to the local video store and rent 6 movies for $5 for the week. If I couldn't find 6 or I wanted a reliable comedy that'd be Delirious. I'd forgotten all about it but the memories came flooding back. I've got to track it down to watch ASAP.
I love this movie. I actually think virtually everything was perfect, especially the casting (although I agree it would have been better served with more soap cheese in the look of it). Thank you for covering it, it's definitely a hidden gem that more people need to see. Whenever John Candy or soap opera satire comes up (happens more than you might think) I mention this movie and everyone looks at me like I'm nuts because they think I've randomly started talking about the Eddie Murphy special.
You are absolutely right. There are so many obscure films out there that should be available on physical media, without having to resort to paying an extortionate amount of money or resort to a bootleg copy. It really as sad in this day and age, I love my DVD collection and can't be without it! Let's hope they listen to you and make it available for everyone! Thank you!
After watching Summer Rental and The Great Outdoors a couple weeks ago, I suggested to my girlfriend that we check out one of Candy’s lesser known films. So I pulled Delirious out of the stacks and we laughed our asses off. Amazing cast. JC was fantastic in it as he was in everything he did. Dylan Baker falling apart was priceless. Highly watchable film. Plenty of VHS copies still floating around if you still have a functional VCR. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves John Candy. I sorely miss him and May he Rest In Peace.🔥🎥👍
I somehow had never heard of this movie. Having watched it for the first time in my 40s, I'm absolutely blown away by it. It was funny. Poinient. The stereotypes were perfect. And John Candy was brilliant. Thank you for this series and keep doing it.
I’ve been wanting to see this film for years and could never find a copy out and about. It’s a pretty rare and out of print dvd, but I finally found a copy of it on EBay for $20 brand new. Your video made me even more eager to check it out.
I was lucky enough to have this be the first John Candy film i ever saw. It was featured in the Free On Demand section with my family's Comcast plan back around 2010 i think. I loved this movie as a kid so much. Like you, I was a huge fan of his and owned this on VHS, like many of his other movies. When I saw it again as an adult, I didn’t think much of the movie, but I always remember Dylan Baker’s scenes. The hair falling out scene is hilarious.

I'm so happy you covered this movie! It's one of my favourite John Candy performances, and the supporting cast is great too. Definitely deserves more appreciation in my opinion.
This was actually free on CZcams months ago so I watched it. I personally wasn't blown away but I do say John Candy made the most of it's premise and it was decently enjoyable.
You're telling me John Candy and Billy Crystal two of the best people and comedians shared a stage and now I'm finding it out? Wow. Now I believe in miracles
That has been a favorite of mine for a long time. (My mother has her Soap Opera trilogy, with this, Soap Dish, and Tootsie that she all loves to rewatch). And thankfully, while it's not on physical media, there are digital versions out there. Right now, with a library card, I can check it out at Hoopla for free. But I admit that it would be wonderful to have a copy of my own. But something I want to talk about that has always stuck out to me about this movie is the costume design for John Candy. When he shows up somewhere as Jack Gates he just always looks amazing. I would never say that John Candy looked bad, mind you. He was exceptionally handsome, really. But he was also a large man. But he always looked amazing in those suits. I've always struggled with my weight, and, seeing Jack burst through the stained-glass window in that dark suit with a blue shirt, I always wanted an outfit that looked like that myself because of just how good it looked on him in that scene.
found your channel a little over a month ago and I've watched nearly all your videos since. I really enjoy watching your channel. Thanks for taking the time to give your take but even more so all the research. Great story telling.
If there’s one trope I LOVE in film, it’s the classic “real person enters fictional world”. There are so many ways to make it interesting. John Ritter’s Stay Tuned comes to mind. Maybe someday we’ll get a video on it. It actually did the Universal Remote concept about 15 years before Click. The MTV section is still a favorite of mine. Edit 2024: this is still a great movie. Also very similar to Stranger Than Fiction, the 2006 dramady about Will Ferrell being a character in a book. Essentially the inverse of this film.
Never saw that one but I remember the promo showing him going through a horror-version of Three's Company and being just old enough to understand the joke.
This was the first VHS rental I ever went and picked up by myself as a kid. I had actually tried to get a Van Damme movie but my mom had put an R Rating restriction on the account lol. But when I complained about not being able to get the Van Damme movie, she called and had it removed, and then I got a Van Damme movie the next time. But I'll always remember Delirious because of that memory.
I was aware of this movie but never watched it. This video inspired me to finally watch it, so thank you for making it. There was a copy of it to rent at the local market I worked at as a teen. I can vividly remember the box art (along with Hiding Out with Jon Cryer, another one I didn't watch until recently). As a teen, I vivaciously read reviews of movies (Maltin, Ebert, etc.), and was dissuaded from this movie because of the negative reviews. It is sad how many of Candy's film were dismissed and never found an audience. I absolutely agree that it is a shame this movie is out of print. It deserves a Shout Factory, Kino Lorber or Arrow release. I wonder if this move suffered at the box office with critics because it was released a few months after Soapdish, which was also a comedy centered around a soap opera.
The John Candy as Orson Welles skit is way funnier when you realize he was making fun of the Frozen peas commercial before most people knew that audio existed.

I'll be honest, I never heard of this movie, but it sounds fun and it's a shame that John Candy never managed to get into dramatic acting.
Check out Only the Brave if you haven't yet.
Only the lonely was a valiant effort-a comedy that was more at home being a drama
The part he played in Oliver Stone's JFK was a dramatic role for John Candy...
This film is worth your time if you come across it. Just wait till you meet Len!! Boy did they get letters!!
Check It Out. It's one of his best ones.
I still mourn for what we never got: some of the different direction of John’s film career such as doing dramatic or lead man work.

this was one of those forever movies on HBO as i was growing up, always enjoyed the heck out of it.
Thank you for covering this movie .
I named my CZcams channel because this movie !!!
Thanks again !!!
Absolutely love this movie, used to watch it all the time as a kid.
Thanks for reminding me of this movie. It's a good one.
I haven’t seen Stay Tuned in years!
Disagree, I didn’t care for it
Great film, my family had it on VHS along with many other of his great movies.
I love this movie. Used to play on Comedy Central quite often. Was surprised to learn it was panned.
This is my favorite John Candy movie. It deserves more respect.
I loved this movie when i was young...Still does.
Gosh, I wish I watch this as a child that would be an awesome watch along Groundhog Day. John Candy is a talent.
For anyone interested, Delirious is available for free on CZcams. (As of December 2022 at least.)
I thought at first I never got to see this movie, but as I watched your video, it came to me. I loved this movie.
BROOKLYN NY, Another icon lost way to Soon, Rest in Paradise my Brother, Thanks for all the Memories
I randomly watched this on CZcams during a hobby night and honestly was pretty entertained. It felt like a thin concept but it's fun.
such an underrated film, I love the scene where the brother's teeth start to fall out
