    The shutters are placed like that to ensure a complete field of fire.
    The main shutter faces the entrance with good tunnel coverage; however, if attackers were able to make it to the concrete cover in front of the main shutter they would be able to access the door. The low shutter allowed the Soldiers to shoot any attackers in that area and prevent intrusion.
    Just my two cents

    In my opinion if this cave was being attacked the lower part of the door could be opened and a soldier could lay on the floor to fire at the enemy without being in the line of fire from the soldier manning the main firing position.

    • @WW2HistoryHunter
      @WW2HistoryHunter  Před 3 lety +3

      That could be it. Thanks Penny

    • @kingfishers79
      @kingfishers79 Před 3 lety +3

      Its a stable door......called so because of horse stables,the lower part keeps the horse in and the top allows the horse to poke its head out....my guess is that it gives the option for the door to be fully closed or partially open at the top so the door could be manned visually whilst not allowing a mass entry into the room if the guard was shot as enemy soldiers would have to go single file over it.

    • @historyguard-ww2
      @historyguard-ww2 Před 3 lety +1

      Not bad idea... BUT... WHY ONLY in this military complex... ?!? Could it be a...bad mounting ?
      I wonder WHY/HOW THAT 'blast door' is STILL there... ??!

    • @slwgekte
      @slwgekte Před 3 lety

      I was thinking that since the door is not in the firing line of the gun shudder its so that if somebody manages to get past the machine gun he will be crouched down under the shudders so as to be out of line of fire from there, then the person at the door shoots the hunkered down man or men infront of the door. It would be hard to fire down from behind the door if the hatch was in the top part of the door

    Great explore. The turret looks like an observation turret, rather than for an MG. It should have a hole on top, in the middle for a periscope. As for the door, I can only think that it may be the only door readily available at the time but the hinge attachments were on the wrong side of the door for the frame. I can only think that if the enemy were firing into the entrance and the door hinges were the other way around, any incoming fire would enter the tunnels if the door wasn't fully shut. Thats my theory and i'm sticking to it!

      I Love your videos a say a huge thank you for taking the time trouble n hopefully not many risks in bringing these to us. Split doors were installed in case there was a cave in. The debris would fall on the floor and maybe block the door. Having the door split would allow you to crawl out the upper 1/2 door over the debris blocking the lower half.

    The reason one firing port is high and the other is low is for interlocking fields of fire. The firing port that is higher can only aim down so far, if someone was able to duck under his field of fire, the firing port on the bottom could get him.

    Awesome finds! The only reason I can think of as to why the door seemed upside down, is maybe it was a pre-fabricated door (already on hinges in the door frame) and they needed it to open in the direction it did rather than the other. Like they went to install it, would open the wrong way, so they flipped it. ??? That’s a good riddle. LOL

    What an incredible find. That site was obviously a very important, and busy, Command Centre, to have been dug into the hillside like that. The size of the place is amazing. The white painted rooms, the amount of bricks. The sliding hatch in the bottom" Stable Door" probably have served a couple of purposes. Could have been used for tossing grenades out into the passage way, without getting in the way of the main MG and for letting in a fresh air flow if the main air system was damaged of blocked, while under attack. Love the steel cupola on top. Borrowed from Poland's bunker system, or the Maginot Line? So cool. That place will eventually become another forgotten piece of History. Thank you both for bringing it to us. Cheers to Everyone! Please Stay Safe, Stay Healthy! 2020 is almost over!

    The partial door is a defensive position. In you notice, the lower door section has a small gun port that can be opened. Soldiers can take cover behind it to defend against those attempting to enter the complex.
