What a crazy hatch in the start of the video. A run off can change the landscape of a river at times, amazing how that works and how a environment can either be created or wiped. Great video. I love that blue reel and of course some great action!
Hands down the #1 channel that convinced me I need to try fly fishing. Great content man, keep it up!
Seb from France. Man you videos are a life saver during the off-season (sept to April). Recently I moved to Melbourne and only had the chance to go fishing once but the results were decent so can’t wait to go back!
Wellington here- ex Taupo- just re disovered fly fishin after a 15 year break. Like your vids mate!
Hey Fella. I’m in the UK, South Wales specifically. Started learning to fly fish two years ago, didn’t do any last year but got more into it this year. Mostly still water for trout, although had my first attempt river fishing a couple of weeks back and caught my first wild brownies (3) on a pheasant tail nymph. And had two rainbows on a yellow humpy dry fly for the first time ever recently, super happy about that!! Keep up the awesome vids mate, watched all of them and they’re really helping me learn more about this fantastic sport. Tight lines!
Another great video Gareth! Wisconsin, USA...Currently chasing warm water species like smallmouth, pike, muskie. As soon as the weather and water start to cool, back to swinging for salmon and steelhead on the two handers! By far my favorite style of fishing!
Awesome " winter" fishing.
I've been nymphing trout here, in the Columbia River, Trail B.C., Canada.
Winter fishing here involves a lot of ice, snow, and ,cold.
Looking forward to moving to N.Z.
Fortunate enough to have married a Kiwi.
Looking forward to spending endless days fishing down there.
Who knows, maybe one day we'll meet up on the river.
Thanks for the videos.
It's not always about the hard work getting there to fish or heaps of back casts to make it work. Its sometimes about just going out & making it lay back & lifes easygoing style fishing. It looks like a lot of fun. I'm keen to give it s good. Awesome bro.
I am from Scotland. I fly for rainbows and smaller browns! Love the channel mate. Keep making the vids and I will keep watching. Thank you
Yo Gareth,
2 words mate, tube flies. As soon as I started fishing my favourite intruder patterns on tubes I landed more fish and stopped* fouling and losing less. Cheers from BC, Canada. You need to get up here for some steelhead! Awesome vids bro
yeah bro steel head and bull trout! cheers man
Wisconsin trout, smallies and musky are my mains. Love watching your videos and only dream about making a trip sometime in my life to NZ
cheers bro. hope you get here some day
Hey, I'm a kiwi living in Aussie, waiting for the rivers to open over here too. Lucky there's surf and Mountain bikes to keep me going. Awesome vids mate.
Maryland in the eastern US, Getting far too warm for trout fishing here so warm water species it is. Bass, Carp, and some smallmouth action is a great replacement for trout!
love the vids Gareth they are always an awesome break in the day, and help me to dream!
Montrose, Colorado. Runoff just ended and it’s time to fish! Stone flies in the Black Canyon, and caddis everywhere! Been tying flies for weeks!
awesome bro, hope you slay them!
Hey! First off, love your videos :) Perfect for dreaming away during the off-season here in the north of Sweden. Right now the season here is ON, and I fish for Trout and Greyling. Mostly swinging for trout with a good old Wolly Bugger :). I also enjoy dry fly action, but over here, if you want to go big on Trout, streamers is the way to go. Just came back from 10 days fishing and re-grouping for my next trip in a week from now.
Great video Gareth cant wait for the next video Washington state here take the kids to the lakes and rivers for trout and back in June fished for shad kids had a blast catching them
Colorado here, going for trout mostly. The snowpack was deep so flows are running super well for this time of year. Hit the Cache La Poudre outside of Fort Collins yesterday and did well on some browns. Strong hatches going off in the evening.
Was in the north east for 2 weeks and hit the Thousand Islands in upstate NY, some ponds in Maine, and the South Branch of the Raritan in NJ (Ken Lockwood Gorge). Water is high out there too but fishing is great. Mostly deep nymphing in the smaller water or streamers. Dry fly action is really popping off out west now
yeah i here that the snowmelt is big this year, i was there last year and it was really lite and the fishing was great
Hey Gareth! Another great video . I'm in Colorado chasing trout and pike with mouse patterns. Such a blast watching big fish chase mouse patterns. Keep up the hard work man!
thanks heaps bro
Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains. Mostly smallmouth now in the summer on a hellgrammite pattern size 8, and a ton of bead head buggers 8-10 (brown and black). Some trout will still hit in native mountain streams during early morning and the last 2 hours of light, dropper riggs on whatever is hatching, with some kind of bh hares ear nymph. Love you vids, keep up the good work!
On the Scottish Borders fishing the Tweed and Till for Atlantic Salmon and Sea trout. Rivers low and warm not ideal but had a lift today so Monday could be good 👍 Keep the vids coming .
Yoooo back into the skagit stuff! Awesome bro :)
cheers mate
Hey Gareth,
Followed you for a long time now and I love your content! I live in Washington State and I am an avid trout fisherman. I go all over the western US for trout on the fly! Headed to Montana late next month! Keep up the great work my friend! Come by the Pacific North West anytime! Cheers!
cheers mate, i appreciate that. and i will do some day mate, cheers
Greating from New Caledonia! Fishing for all the tropical species you can expect on a fly rod...
And as often i can : fishing for trout in New Zealand each year!
Always like your videos!
See y'a !
awesome bro, sounds like you live in paradise. you got GTs up there?
@@TroutHuntingNZ not yet on a fly rod... soon i hope !
Luke, Wisconsin. I’ve been doing nothing but muskie on the fly since May. It’s been a slow year so far only 1 muskie in the net but a few good pike and lots of muskie follows which is always fun. Waiting for late August for the Great Lakes migratory fishing to start up. Love your videos buddy, keep em coming.
Colorado! I'm fishing for rainbow and Browns. I'm a beginner but learning how to nymph and trying to get line control down. I don't have any rivers near my hometown where I can swing so dry flies and nymph rigs is what I'm stuck to. Thanks for another awesome video! Keep up the good work
cheers bro
Cracking video dude...from Scotland, first year fly fishing...try for Salmon, had a lovely brown trout and still water fishing for rainbows, blues
From the UK. Just starting my fly fishing journey. Fish for Salmon and brown on rivers and rainbows, tiger and blue trout on still waters. Love your vids dude. Picking up a few tips from you.
Cheers mate glad you enjoy em, good luck out there
Hey bro, from Calif. Fish Mammoth area. Nymphs mostly on the Owens river. Got into a great grasshopper bite recently. Landed brown and big rainbow. Not good like u but I'm learning. Thanks for all the tips. Looks fun to spay light.
Muito bom!! Só truta monstra!!! Very good fishing!!!
Dig your videos Garett! Our steelhead season is just around the corner in the Pacific Northwest in the US. Keep up the good work
cheers bro. good luck out there
Awesome fishing good for you
I fish for big Brook trout , landlocked Salmon in the State of Maine for the past 21 years in my State of Vermont for me Brook trout, Rainbow trout fly fish only !!
Ponds and Rivers and Small Lake
You keep up the Great Fishing !!
I like to help people out !!
Thank you the Vermonter
cheers bro sounds like you live in a great spot!
Beautiful state of Maine (Noreast US). Fishing for landlocked salmon and brook trout. Smattering of browns and bows mixed in! Love the videos!
Great vid Gareth. I fish the Whanganui River with streamers and have similar experiences that you have with intruders. My theory is that loose stinger hook can end up connected anywhere on the fishs head resulting in a less reliable hookup ratio. Also small stinger hook diameter can tear out of the fleshy areas more often , plus if they are weighted on the shank the fish can shake the weight more effectively due to it being connected by a loose piece of braid. Any of the above three factors especially if combined will result in a less reliable hook set.A normal fly and hook as one piece gets positioned into the mouth correctly resulting in a firmer hook set. My observation anyways!
Logan Utah
Trout.
I'm a beginner.
Some presentation tutorial videos would be awesome. Keep up.the good work. I love the videos.
Logan!!
I’m about an hour drive from u fellas 😂😂 Salt Lake City Utah
Cool bro thanks heaps. you mean like fly delivery?
watchin your videos from Hamburg Germany....lovin it! thx mate
Yo Gareth! Super dope vid man straight from Golden CO, USA. Been hooking buttery browns in Deckers CO lately and we have also been doing some back country hiking, hooking high altitude brookies above tree line @ Diamond Lake.
nice bro CO is dope, i will be back there oneday
Digging the scenery as always.
From Puerto Rico, fishing for Peacock Bass, and trying to get into tarpon and snook.
Great vid, tight lines!
Yo G man. I’m Jacob, livin Near Mt. Hood in Oregon. Been fishin the deschutes and swinging up fat redbands on sculpin. Mayfly and caddis action for sippers in the back Eddy’s is a huge program too. Those fish 6x and make you hunt them, which is fun as hell. The lakes out here fish awesome and The Deschutes is just starting it’s summer steelhead season, and 10-15 pound fish on skated dry flies are a common occurrence. Been watching for about 2 years now, love the work dude. I strive towards it whenever I attempt at making content 😂
Blairsy from chch now in whanganui
I don't fly fish yet due to no setup but I love ya videos and the idea of fly fishing always a good watch
cheers bro , yeah man get out there and give it a go. you will love it
I'm keen to get the line always wanted to give the swing thing a go. What tip do you recommend for the Tongariro? I am heading down for the winter fly fest in a few weeks time.
Hawkes Bay, NZ. Bought my first fly rod last week after watching your vids a while and thinking it looks way more fun. Havent had a chance to fish it yet. Have been using a spin rod on my local river and up at a lake in the ranges.
thats awesome, hope you get out and learn it on fly. very rewarding
I'm living in St Paul, MN but chase trout all over Wisconsin with trips to the Rocky mountain region a few times a year. In Wisconsin we are fishing spring creeks. Skinny water with heavy vegetation/trees on the banks. Brook trout are the natives, but browns are the dominant species by far. Any rainbows are stockers. We are just on the tail end of what I'd consider peak dry fly season. Things are getting very warm and the fish get pretty fickle in mid-late summer. Things turn back on in September as the spawn approaches.
Brisbane, Australia.
Currently getting all my gear and kayak setup for a local kayaking competition targeting some big winter flathead.
Come October I'm heading to the Snowy mountains (season opening) to have my annual trout trip.
Enjoy your videos did tongoriro river once a few years back. I most fish canterbury high country rivers..never fished a wollie bugger but I have a few in my fly box
First: major kudos to you for stopping to help the young man. I’ve stood exactly where you were- eaten at the bridge restaurant and the Indian take out by One World (excellent). Thank you for another great vid. I think the reason for pulled hooks is the hook set location. Same in salt water trolling. The fish doesn’t have a chance to turn its head for a corner or deeper set. The hook pulls because its a soft tissue hook set.
Currently in the Appalachia Mountains for early morning ‘bows/browns and brooks. Heading to Alaska with my 3 boys for a couple of weeks of river time. Get to fly fish AND carry a cannon. Something you don’t need to worry about in NZ. Definitely adds an ‘edge’ to the whole experience.
Keep your vids coming- I’m going to check out your rec for Skagit fly lines.
Michael Clark what part of Appalachia you in?? I live on watauga and south holston river
@@jordonpratt9641 Sorry for the delayed response- my initial reply didn't go through.
I fish the Elk and Cranberry mostly with some time spent on the Helton. Only get up there a few times each summer. Enjoy.
Norway. Brown trout in the mountains, sea trout in the sea/fiords/tidal currents, and salmon in rivers (and hopefully Mackenzie country in NZ again in November). My two cents regarding your question: To increase "landing rate" I would keep my rod tip a lot higher, letting the line hang a little loose from the tip. When the line tightens, the fly will hopefully sit a little deeper in the mouth. Quick strikes are not always the best when swinging downstream.
Another sick vid! NZ from the manawatu....coming to tongariro on Friday so should be good
A heard you saying you preferred the scientific angler integrated to the OPST commando head you were using, OPST brought out an integrated line last August called the smooth, from 150gr to 300gr,I kid you not it is as you young guys say, sick,I have a 150gr with a 7.5ft floating tip, fish it with a 9ft fly rod 4 weight, great for swinging, nymphing with an indicator and even dry fly,I haven't used another line for river fishing since I got it.just thought I would say incase you hadn't heard of the OPST, smooth, love your videos, yous are lucky to have a lot of great trout fishing, over here in Scotland it is struggling in many places, rant over, carry on the good work.
Hi Gareth. Another great video. I assume the skagit line is a floating line and you either use a sinking leader or a normal leader with a bead head weighted fly - a change from the traditional Tongariro wet/shooting head set up. Cheers mate
Great video bro cheers from Scotland
From Baltimore, MD. I fish the Gunpowder River whenever I can. Tailwater with a large population of Wild Browns. Would love some more streamer vids!
I am in NC. I need to make it up north sometime!
cheers bro. going to fil another one in the morning.
Hey Gareth, cool sesh on the swing. River looks nice level/ colour. I find you have days on the swing when for what ever reason you drop em. I've lost 17 one day only to land all fish the next. No gear change, same fly? One thing I will say is I've stopped setting or striking and let the rod load on its own weight. Ultra sharp hooks also. OPST or Daiichi swing hooks been good to me.
Cheers
All the way from the Tron. Keen to try that fly line - looking for a change from heaving nymphs.
Really enjoy all your content and watching your technique...
West Virginia (eastern US)
small native brook trout, some wild rainbow, and browns...
addicted to smallmouth in the rivers.
Im really wanting to get into some Smallies. I live in Central NC and most rivers are only float accessible for smallies.
awesome dude. yeah smallmouth are dope.
just get a boat bro. cheers man
Jason, I am from WV as well. I love in the Charleston Area.
@@TroutHuntingNZ Is there any notable bass fishing of any kind in NZ?
Hey man swinging for rainbows just like you in the PNW USA. Putting big fish in the net due to the swing flies I use are big sclupin patterns. Working on some videos due to inspiration from you and trippin trout showing me how it's done. Love the long videos !
Try fighting the fish with more side pressure towards the Bank.
will do bro thanks, look forward to seeing the videos
@@TroutHuntingNZ posted an 8 min one recently, check it out bro!
Tuning in from Minnesota, been catching trout lately on big terrestrials, largemouth bass on frogs and poppers, and smallmouth bass on swimbaits! Don’t worry about losing fish lol I’ve lost far more steelhead than I’ve ever caught
Hobart, Tasmania Australia. Generally we fish Tasmania's central plateau, the "land of one thousand lakes" - we stalk and sight cast to wild browns in 1-metre deep tarns (small lakes the size of a rugby pitch) in the wilderness. You have to come try it one day dude! Right now the plateau is covered in snow though, definitely feeling your pain!
I'm from Uruguay, but I'm here arround Nz trying to catch some trouts 😂
nice mate, hope you find some
Been hammerin the big brookies and salmon up here in maine. Cant wait for fall fishing to get into some monster brookies
Northern BC, Canada
I've also noticed loosing more fish on flies with swing hooks, especially with a soft trailer loop, as on zonker flies. I think it may be the hook shape, with the shorter point and closer pivot point, so I'm trying an experiment right now shifting from Gamikatsu Octopus hooks to Owner hooks. If it works I'll let you know. I'm mostly fishing for spring creek rainbow trout, bull trout and grayling, but have been slipping out to the coast for steelhead whenever time is available. Thanks for all the great videos! I'm on standby as well right now, so had to cancel a chinook trip last week. What can you do?
WV, MD, and PA. Wild fish are on my mind!!
La linea spey es de hundimiento o flote? Saludos. Nice job
Gareth I live in Nevada west side by Tahoe. I'm just getting ready to start fly fishing again. Just ordered new reel have rain bows and brown's smaller mountainous streams brookies cutthroat. Pyramid lake about 3 hrs away lahotan cutthroats up to 15# great videos we have nothing on you. Size wise👍🎣
Hey Gareth
All the way from South Africa chasing trout, bass and local species yellowish. Headed your way soon so hope we can meet up for a session.
Myles, Alberta.
Catching lots of browns on olive and purple wooly buggers on the bow river and elbow river. Water has been pretty murky after some rainfall but I’ve still been able to get some fish that stay really close to the banks.
Trinity NC (central) Fish local lakes and ponds (Boone and Appalachian mountain area near Tennessee for trout)
Trout and Large Mouth Bass
Ive been experimenting with Streamers I have tied and Dry Dropper rigs. Really hot temps right now so early am and later pm trips are happening. I have to try the Spey line man! Love SA.
cheers bro thnks, sounds like a dope spot!
really nice watch your films and tie some flies at the same time. also I am thinking of trying som swinging like you to see if it´s gona work from weelchair.
US-born, dual citizen now in Iceland. Have caught Arctic Char and Browns in Iceland, 1 Atlantic salmon (so far) in Iceland. In the US have caught the 'grand slam' Brown, Brook, Rainbow and Cutthroat trout in Montana. Otherwise, caught trout in the states of Georgia, Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, so a few left to try...Need to get back to NZ to get the skunk off....Also caught a nice 14" brownie in Italian Alps to everyone's surprise, me included.
Montana USA. Trout fishing has been great this year
awsome dude. i will get up there oneday
Olympic Penninsula. I wish I could have hooked you up with Jim Kerr fishing when you were in the states. You two would get each other. He is not a CZcamsr but you two would get it. If you're not busy in six years I would love to wander down and experience your world.
Hey again fellow Gareth - I land a ton of fish on intruders when the take is businesslike, and drop a ton when the take is savage. Theory: if the fish attacks the head of the fly, the hook misses the scissors and only gets shitty purchase in him, if it gets him at all.
sounds about right. cheers dude
'nother great vid! loooove to see some swinging
cheers mate
mid canterbury , mostly trout , looking forward to fishing season heaps of fishing adventures already planned
awsome bro good luck in the new seasone
Nice Steelhead! Really need to head upstate in PA and land a few, currently go after them wild browns though, sadly, the numbers of monster wild trout in PA is much lol much lower than NZ hahaha. Wish the US would put more efforts towards conservation of wild trout rather than continuing to stock over them! Maybe one day can make it up to NZ hahaha. Love fly fishing though, and your pretty good at it! Tight lines mate, keep on rippin em lips!!!
awesome bro hope you make it here someday
Trout Hunting NZ yeah maybe one day!!! 🎣🐟💯💦
Hey Gareth,
I fish throughout Europe, mainly Germany, France and Slovenia for Rainbows, Brown and Grayling.
Actually we don‘t fish cause the stress might be to much for the fish in waters warmer than 70°F .
sounds like the right thing to do. slovina looks dope also
Hey man fishing in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in Canada. Fishing for Atlantic Salmon and striped bass. Atlantic Salmon are awesome fish if you ever get the opportunity to fish for them!🤘🏼
ohh striped bass sound so cool. i want to catch one bad
Ozzy mate, i have to wonder if the typical hook orientation of intruders doesnt lend well, as i have had similar probs with any shank style fly....the comment above about tube flies is fair, but last trip fishing the T still lost my share of fish with tubes, very good in low water conditions though as the sink rate is somewhat reduced compared to shank flies with lead eyes
Sweden. Brown trout and rainbowtrout. I’m traveling to NZ this winter too the southern island. Du you know any good guides their?
Nice fish im from Poland but i'm fishing in UK. Good movie
thanks dude
First comment, love the vids bro, mean as keep it up 👍🏼👍🏼
Hi from Scotland, fishing for wild Brown Trout on River Deveron, mainly dry fly to rising fish, although have started to experiment with Streamers in fast water as things warm up to 15 degrees, finding a similar problem in hook ups, will persist.
Snap, on the Don a lot. Ever try NZ style nymphing? I like it but haven't had much luck with it yet.
@@edanannand tried NZ method successfully, caught fish up to 3lb, also tried Polish Nymphing with medium success. We are blessed with 2 good rivers that still have good fly hatches.
Do any of these rivers you fish trout rivers that are steelhead/ trout? Or they just one or the other?
Love me some trout videos !!!
I’m from central Ohio - Hoping to get up to Michigan to do some smallmouth, brook, and brown fishing.
From the northern part of Idaho in the states. Mostly fish for cutthroat and bull trout. I swing for steel head in the fall.
What was the fly line your using
i'm from Atlanta USA I've been going north to Tennessee to fish free stone rivers spesifically the conasauga and ocoee for smallmouth spotted and coosa redeye bass also we have epic brown trout fishing in the chattahoochee river
Langley, BC, CANADA
Rainbows, Cutthroat, Bulls. Salmon & Steelhead. This is my first fly fishing after many years on spinning and drifting with a centrepin.
awsome bro yeah true steel head and bull trout are high on my list
San Diego, CA fishing large mouth bass on the fly every weekend. Size 6 brown wooly bugger on a sinking line.
cheers bro sounds dope
Hi I fish the Motueka river just hooked my first trout in a long while and lost it as it came towards me and I was in waist deep water so couldn't back up quickly or strip the line in fast enough. I tried not keeping the line so tight on the drift like you said too get a better drift and it seemed to work but not so good when you hook the fish as too much slack line in the system especially when the fish decided to swim towards me. I noticed you always strip the line in quick when the fish is first hooked instead of letting it run maybe that's what I need to do next time
What time is it over there
in colorado FINALLY throwing big dries for browns rainbows and cutthroats. Off to a hot start with a 70+ fish weekend on hoppers.
Hamilton
Perch,trout and saltwater fishing
Decent it’s on and off at the moment

What tripod are you using, mate? Nice video!
no tripod used mate i just balance the camera on stuff. like my back pack
Lake Orion, MI. Been nymphing for brown trout with decent success. Last trip I hooked into 4, landed two and lost two
West Virginia here: really gotten into catching carp on the fly as the water temps get too high for trout.
