Starlink's New Data Plans for Standard, Mobile & Mobile Priority - Lots of Changes for RV & Boat

  • SpaceX made some significant changes to its Starlink plans yesterday - simplifying what had been an increasingly complex range of plan offerings down to four primary plans featuring three network priority levels.
There are now four plans: Standard, Priority, Mobile and Mobile Priority - replacing Residential, Roam / RV, Business and Maritime.
But the newly defined plans come with new terms and restrictions - and particularly for those who use Starlink in motion or on the water, these new plans come with new limits and the potential for substantially increased costs.
So just what is new, what has been renamed, and what has stayed the same?
And how can nomadic users best take advantage of these new plan options - particularly considering the new capabilities that allow Starlink customers to change plans and purchase additional priority data as needed?

I was looking forward to getting Starlink but have been holding off due to the constant changes. I think I am done looking at it for now. I have the FMCA techconnect + and it works fantastically on the East coast. Next year we will be travelling out West and I was hoping for something to back it up. May just go with a second cellular carrier. Too much money for too little service.

Ours too! I suspect that there will be a speed limit that below is considered “stopped”. In the past Starlink tested a 10mph cut-out, which was plenty fine for most slow-speed cruisers to even use in motion. Now we have heard reports of some now seeing issues at even 2 knots speed, which cuts our cruising but should be fine at anchor. We will see how it settles down over time.

I have my dish mounted on the RV roof so we can have in motion internet across many areas of the country that do not have cell coverage. Expensive investment based on what Starlink terms of service (were). If it doesn't work in motion I do not see a need for it anymore since it was very slow due to the low priority. The value was using it at all times.

Great video Chris & Cherie! Thanks for keeping us up to date... It seems the high performance dish advertising in motion usage wasn't discussed well with the financial team. Or they just don't care, which is more likely. Frustrating, because it was a factor in our purchase. Thankfully, the ever changing rates, terms of service, and plans were also considered, so we're not overly surprised. We'll stick around for now, we're sure they'll change things again.
Regardless, if we really need a signal and there is none, we can stop. Plenty of places that still don't have squat for signal unless you can Starlink, and we aim to see quite a few of them this summer.

But, one question: On Starlink's website, when I select the flat high-perf hardware, it now defaults to the $250 50GB mobile priority plan. The $250 is built into the first required payment. There is no option to select the $150 or $200 mobile plan. Are you sure I can switch to the $150 plan later? If so, why can I not select it from the start?

I have Starlink RV and love it, but I'm telling you Starlink is going to keep screwing around with their plans and is going to get SMACKED with a class action lawsuit if they don't stop it. Especially with having people buy $2500 dishes with the possibility of using it mobile etc or even just the regular RV plans buying equipment and then afterwards charging more and lowering the service contract after you've already bought the equipment. @@MobileInternetResourceCenter might being the key word. I have a support ticket open with them on this topic now. Will have to see what they say. The plans that mention in-motion ability also seem to say the HP is “recommended”. To me that doesn’t mean required. I personally hope they still allow it as purposely didn’t want the HP dish due to power use and added weight on the roof of the pop up camper. Money wise it would have been less expensive to get the HP dish than so the mods we did to get the standard dish flat mounted, but doing what we did made more sense all things considered, especially if in-motion still worked.

@@overlandv10 The ability to add mobile priority to my account showed up today. I'm in Canada, have the small rectangle dish roam plan. It's currently paused and will get activated in a couple weeks when we start going out and about in the motorhome. A slider showed up today in the account page labelled 'Manage Data', appears to allow me to opt in to mobile priority data at 2.63 per GB (Canadian pricing) and it states 'ocean access, in motion connectivity'.
It'll be interesting to see what happens when we turn it back on, it's cut down and flat mounted on the roof of the RV. mobile ranges from great to horrible in my area with speeds all the way up over 100 and lows of 1.5. it's not enough in the evenings. Switched to the priority 1tb and it is fantastic. The priority data is always over 20mbps and usually around 50-100. I haven't run out of priority data so I can't say what speeds I get with the unlimited Standard, but as long as it is around 10-15, I'll be happy. I can't get residential at my home, so the 1tb priority plan is the only option paired with buying the mobile equipment out the gate. Once residential is available, I'll switch. It's been a life saver to allow a family member to work from home and I am looking into that as well. It's well worth the 250 dollar a month cost if you factor in not paying for gas and wear on the car. If it was not a justified purpose it would be way too expensive and I find the idea of a 5000 dollar a month plan option to be laughable and insulting. I had no other options whatsoever except crappy dsl that loses connection every few minutes and barely get 3 download and .75 upload. For me, even 10mbps is lightning fast so I don't care that I'm not getting 100 all the time. I just hope they continue to reach the east coast cause it's pretty barren out here for internet options and it would be nice to pay 120 bucks with residential instead of 250. As long as it at least stays over 15mbps I'll be happy.

Wow, the business practices of Starlink are ridiculous. Really glad I saw this because I just returned a system to a seller on eBay who either couldn’t get support from them to resolve a problem transferring the dish, couldn’t figure out how to complete the transfer process even given the links to directions on how to complete the process that I sent him myself, or was straight up trying to scam me. Fortunately did everything by the books on the return per eBay’s system so I fully expect to get my money back, but was seriously considering ordering a new unit directly from SpaceX because of the problems and fact that I seriously think there was a good chance he was trying to scam me. After seeing them completely fail to grandfather existing customers into the plans in place when they signed up for the service, combined with the sheer number of significant changes they have made, especially performance for Roam that are now no better than my cell plans, and in 5G areas quite possibly worse, I think I’m going to hold off a while longer until we hear more about Kaiper.

Starlink updated their terms yesterday (after this video) to define land as anywhere listed as Available, Waitlist or Coming soon on their coverage map (including water). Ocean data is black on their map. And yes, as covered in this video - you can change plans as needed.

Electricity was going to be “too cheap to meter”. Well we saw how that worked out. Understandable changes considering the landscape [no pun intended]. However, to some this'll either be a game changer, or a difficult new option when going on the freedom road for a while. There are so many mobile families at present, who have CZcams channels with consistently updated content, that I can see a few of them being pretty bugged out at these new plan options. As a European mobile data user, these tariffs would crush me. Far too expensive especially for those working on the road, and personally, the personal info that SLink will be able to obtain also bothers me. Giving them any location details would turn me off as would the backward idea of paying as you go for further data if you hit your limit. Some people will be far better off buying cellular data on a fairer plan and using that when they have a strong enough signal. Sorry, but I'd have to be heck of a desperate to buy into the any of the new tariffs. The masses of people working from mobile location, on the road, may be the only ones to truly benefit from Star Links new setup.

I am curious to see how well they will consider me stationary if my home base mounted on my vehicle goes while I make a quick run to the grocery store and right back home, whether that few mile temporary drive is considered to be outsode of my home base or not.
Also, why would anyone land base use Starlink in motion on the road? That is the ONE place where data only devices and plans from cell service providers (except the hole in Nebraska and eastern Wyoming and parts of North and South Dakota andaybe eastern Montana) work generally better than anything Starlink has to offer. A 100 GB data plan on the road from T-Mobile for $50 is quite affordable while driving compared to the Starlink upgrade for land motion plans. IMO, it pays to have a backup plan on some other device anyway, just in case.

Respectfully, you’re a total fanboy and are giving Starlink and it’s legal staff far too much undeserved license.
I’ve been a business lawyer for almost 50 years. I have read the terms of service from one end to the other. The definitions are so vague that no one can begin to tell where “ocean“ starts. If you live anywhere on the coast of the United States east, gulf or west, you have no idea what the word “ocean“ in the Starlink terms of service means. You used the term in your video, “nearshore.“ What in the Hell does that mean? Is the intracoastal waterway (East Coast, Gulf coast or Western) nearshore or is it an “inland river?“ Is Biscayne, Mobile or Chesapeake Bay nearshore or are they “inland waters?“
I received an email the other day telling me that I had violated my terms of service and my Starlink dish has never been more than eight nautical miles from coastal US land and I have never been outside of coverage of cell towers, both 5G and LTE.
Anywhere within 12 nautical miles of low water point shore is considered to be the United States for any and all purposes..
I completely agree that it’s not fair for someone making a passage from the United States to Bermuda to not be considered to be in the “ocean.“ But in light of the fact that my house is 5+ miles inland, within the city limits of a major city in Florida and is on a salt water canal that is part of the intracoastal waterway how in the hell does Starlink consider that to be on the ocean?
I can, and I am willing to, abide by anyone’s rules as long as they are clearly stated. But Starlink refuses to state its rules in a clear, definitive, and specific manner. It just wants to be squishy and change them any way it wants, whenever it wants. I’m willing to be fair. But they need to be fair with us too. If this keeps up, I hope that every falcon nine, every falcon heavy, and every starship crashes immediately upon launch (assuming it doesn’t have human beings on it) and Elon Musk goes completely broke. Apparently, Starlink has the worst lawyers on God’s green earth. They cannot, choose not, or have been instructed to not write a contract, certainly not one that’s enforceable other than by turning my service off. And if they do that I will be glad to be the lead plaintiff in a class action suit against Starlink. Let’s see how much Elon likes that. My monthly payments are not that significant to Starlink. But I will guarantee you that the plaintiffs lawyers court awarded fees in that class action suit will be meaningful to Starlink.

While we can't say for 100% on their policy on this yet, but from responses I've see from CSR's and even a short lived FAQ statement that has now been removed, it has been suggested that if the cell is blue and listed as available, waitlisted, or coming soon on the standard Starlink map, it's considered on-land use.
