Lake District Walks | Sharp Edge Solo | Climbing Blencathra in the Lake District

  • Sharp Edge is one of the most popular scrambling routes in the Lake District National Park, and it takes walkers to the summit of Blencathra and Hallsfell Top at 868m above sea level. In my humble opinion, it is one of the easier scrambles out there, but still a challenge if you are not stable on your feet, confident navigating in the mountains, or lack a head for heights. Make sure you are well kitted out and competent in the hills before tackling this route - that way, you are almost guaranteed a good time!

If you’re terrified of heights don’t do it - my husband is the same and did striding edge on Helvellyn - vertigo became very intense and it was very dangerous, not worth it especially on an edge with no alternative like sharp edge. Striding edge does have a lower path that you can opt for. Be safe!

I did sharp edge last year.....considering im scared of heights I was proper pleased with myself for taking a few deep breaths, and taking it slow an completing it to the top safely....not long after I did it someone fell off down the gully and never survived. just goes to show these places are no joke....well done Abbie x

I live in the lakes and have ascended blencathra via sharp edge many times, it always looks more extreme on the videos than it does in person hahaha, I suggest you at least have a look at the start of the route in person because it’s such good fun, if you still don’t fancy it, you can always bail. Just tackle it in dry conditions, have fun!

Well done! A really cool video and the channel, Subscribed!
I've done it yesterday via Sharp Edge and it was pretty much scary considering my hiking level. Apart from that when I thought most difficult part is already done in the end of the ridge, I turned accidentally a bit left, climbed some time along the almost "vertical wall" and realizing it's wrong I slowly moved back (And moving back was even more dangerous)! This is almost a suicidal part of my hike, if there could be just one slip - 200 meters fall almost vertically down to the lake from the higher point than most of the ridge.

What a different beast it is then! The slate has no adhesion whatsoever. The part before the bad step was unwalkable. I made it, but it was uncomfortable. I need to revisit this year in the dry for a better experience. 🤗

Between this and Crib Goch, you are climbing some impressive knife edges! Those corduroy ridges might be called "spurs" in the U.S., with cols or ravines between them. They are a good way to get to a summit, and sometimes they can get worn and eroded into a ridgeline like that. You are really good at managing the rock scrambles -- I would have been much slower, if I could handle it at all.

Abbie - ace trip. I so wish someone would put a proper trig point cairn on top of Blen.C. And a shelter. I like to exit north back out over the back of The summit and head right to Skiddaw Bunkhouse then Cumbria way back over Skidda and follow Cumbria way back round to Threlkeld. The Edge in the snow is a challenge and a good day out if you know what you are doing. The red fox brewery in Keswick is a good place for a beer after. Take care.

Well done Abbie. But to anyone watching, never attempt this climb in poor weather. I witnessed a guy fall to his death a couple of months ago a site I’ll never forget. It’s not the toughest scramble, but in wet weather it is lethal.
