  • Blencathra via Sharp Edge in the Lake District.
    In mid July 2020 I decided to take on Blencathra via the route up Sharp Edge. I wanted to see if it was as sharp as they say and to see how it compares to Striding Edge on Helvellyn and Crib Goch in Snowdonia.
    I started the route from the White Horse Inn at Scales. After a steep climb up from the Inn you find yourself on a well defined path that runs alongside the River Glenderamackin. Shorty afterwards you are rewarded with a spectacular view of Sharp Edge in the distance. After crossing Scales Beck just below a small waterfall you find yourself at Scales Tarn.
    Scales Tarn is a great place to rest before the final assent of Sharp Edge is undertaken. Extreme care must be taken on Sharp Edge as the rock is very polished underfoot. It is certainly NOT advisable to take this route on in wet conditions..!! Do NOT attempt this route if you do not have experience of scrambling..!! Do NOT attempt this route if you are not good with heights or exposure.!!
    After completing the ridge you are treated to a superb view down the ridge itself.
    My route then carried on towards the summit at Hallsfell Top (868m) and then back to the White Horse Inn via Scales Fell.
    I hope you enjoy my little scrambling adventure.
    Thanks for watching.

      Awww I’m glad you found it helpful and thanks for watching it🙂 It’s a lovely walk and scramble. If you have had some previous experience with high level scrambling and your not too bad with heights you should have a great adventure. It’s a short ridge and like I said in the video it’s over a bit too quick. Just don’t try it in the wet.!! Have fun and stay safe on it and thanks again for watching my video🙂

    Crib Goch is as exposed as most folks will ever encounter, its in a different league. Striding Edge is much less exposed than Sharp Edge. I would certainly recommend doing Helvellyn, which is a more physically demanding route before graduating to Sharp Edge. Thanks for the video.

      @@rawdog314 Haha yea I’m sure I’ll get a few cloudless days this summer. Like you say can’t be unlucky all the time😃 Well.. In my opinion The Crib is a much more committing route with more potential for a serious mishap. Don’t get me wrong there has been mishaps on Sharp edge but I bet most of em were in wet conditions. The problem with the Crib is its far far longer with a bigger amount of exposure and you can certainly have a serious situation on it even on a dry day. The first time I did the Crib me and my mate had to help a couple of guys down who had got themselves crag fast. As to the videos of Sharp Edge some people use gopros to film the experience and gopros always make things appear worse than they actually are. In my view Crib Goch is a lot bigger step up than Sharp Edge but this is only my opinion remember. If you do decide to give the Crib a go just make sure you go with someone who is good with heights and if at any point ether of you feel uneasy then turn right around and head back down. As long as there is no one behind you as sometimes it can be tricky to get past people😬 Hope this helps. Stay super safe🙂

      I can definitely see crib goch being a bigger challenge,as you say once your on the ridge there's no way off it and it's a long old slog across the top,the fitness and technical side of things won't pose any problems as I've done quite a few now and actually enjoy it,just the mental barrier of the exposure but I'd like to think I can keep a bit of Composure up there 😬😂
      I was talking to somebody yesterday that was a bit shaky at a part of sharp edge who said they'd done crib goch,he said the worst parts of sharp edge are no less scary/difficult than crib goch,just that crib goch is a lot longer,I found the bad step on sharp edge an absolute doddle,there was a bit before that I thought was way more dodgy and got my palms sweaty,I guess different people are set off by different things 😂😂

    I got a little case of anxiety going up striding edge on my first attempt. I've made it up many times since without any issues but it's making me hesitant to lead myself up sharps edge unguided. Does the edge usually have people on it that can lead the way or am I better organising a guide instead of relying on friendly hikers?

    • @FurrychalkbagOutdoors
      @FurrychalkbagOutdoors  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Ally, Sharp Edge normally has quite a bit of footfall each day due to it being a popular route in the area. However I’m not too sure it would be a good idea to trust someone you didn’t know to guide you up it. Plus you can’t rely on that there will be other people around on the day. The route finding on the route itself is pretty straight forward in good weather. The only problem you would have is the exposure on the edge itself. I would just recommend going with someone you know that is fine in exposed situations. That way they can offer you reassurance if and when it’s needed. The scramble along Sharp Edge is a lot shorter than the one along Striding Edge. So if you are ok with Striding then you may be ok with Sharp Edge. Just make sure you go after and during a dry spell with no wind , take it really slow and make sure you place your feet well on each move. Mike🙂

He has reassured me that over time and once I’ve completed another eleven two hundred and ten pound an hour sessions with him I will be cured from the affliction.
