Now she is a force on clay, and that is a testament to her strength, will, and determination.
No other tournament in tennis has come to define Sharapova in the 2nd half of her career more than Roland Garros. If Wimbledon was the beacon of light that signalled her to the world over a decade ago, the French Open has become her yard where she dishes the most damage to her opponents. It is here, on the red clay of Paris, that she conquered the naysayers who said she couldn't win another major after her shoulder surgery. It is here that she has enjoyed the most success as a player. I have loved Maria Sharapova since day 1, and I can't wait to see her compete and defend her title in Paris in just a few weeks. Hopefully, we can see her hold the coupe for a third time. Come on Maria!
+multiplemike Actually her playing style is most suited to clay, so it's not that surprising at all. She is an aggressive baseline player, just like Soderling, Gulbis and Wawrinka. They all prefer clay.
I would say her style is suited to clay these days, but it was not in her teen years. From 2001-2006, Maria had a much better serve than nowadays, and her footwork wasn't as suited for the slow clay. It took her until 2008 to finally win a clay title for the first time (the 18th of her career at the time). So I agree that it suits her now, but not initially.
