Woodturning - Apple Log to Stem Vase

- Woodturning a log, one of my favorite things to do, especially if it’s an Applewood log. They hide so much beauty within their bark. I couldn’t have guessed how amazing this grain would be… Making a stem vase from this log was a pleasure, from using a chainsaw all the way to sandpaper and beyond.

Thanks very much for watching, I appreciate your time and interest! - Zábava
I found your page by just browsing around and saw your work. I am not sure if you do this full time or a weekend thing. All I can say is you have brought wood work back into my dreams. Memories of woodwork in school and how much I used to enjoy it. I loved working with maple and satin walnut, mahogany Oak and cedar. It seemed I looked at the wood differently. watching the grain come to life when you added stains. I have been wondering what I would do with myself in my later years and I believe you have opened my eyes again to the fascination of working with wood. Im lucky enough to live on the west coast of Vancouver Island British Columbia Canada. I have many choices of wood to choose from. Love the work you do. I am very much enjoying sitting in front of my fire with a coffee loving the work you do and dreaming of getting back into working with wood.. Cheers
Such a great comment, Rex! If I played a part in reigniting your passion for woodworking, then I'm truly grateful and happy for you! Follow that dream!
@@RHumphrey I completely agree with this sentiment. I just got back into woodworking after about 25 years away and picked up pen turning about a year ago. Now I'm starting to branch out, and your videos are very well done. I've learned a few things already and I'm really starting to hate my day job that's keeping me out of my garage.
@@paulkoeck2479 "branch out" I get it :)
Very well said Rex!!! Without knowing, I truly think you spoke for a bunch of folks(ME) that do thoroughly enjoy both the education and entertainment aspects that one can find in his magnificent project videos!!! An enormous debt of gratitude is owed to Mr. R. Humphrey for his time, effort, skills(& soo much more) & positive attention/influence that I’m certain he brings to the craft of woodturning and/or woodworking alike. It’s folks like him that guarantees a knowledgeable & enjoyable future for generations to come. God Bless You & Yours R. H.!!!!!! K
R Humphrey if you think apple is gorgeous, try plum wood on for size sometime! It has streaks of orange green brown and purple
As you said: "It's a blessing..." The secrets of nature and a man so skilled to bring it up! Thank you!!🙏👍
Thanks very much! 😊
There's a considerable amount of potential to be found in any log or wood stem. You sir have found a masterpiece! Beautiful!
Much appreciated!
Until I discovered your wood-turning videos, I would not have thought twice about putting an off-cut like that on the fire, having no idea of the bounty that lies beneath bark. Your skill has brought out the sensational beauty of that fluid grain, to amazing effect. A stunning piece, Rod.
You were right! Incredible wood and workmanship!
I really wasn’t expecting all of that, to be honest. Absolutely stunning.
Thank you very much, Kris!
wow that is so gorgeous haven't seen anything as beautiful as this in a long time
Who would have thought Apple Timber was so rich in colours! Great craftsmanship.
What a beautiful vase. Apple wood is a very beautiful wood.
I admire how dedicated you are to you subscribers.
To all those who fought and died. Semper Fi.
Wow. The stunning marking and colours of nature.
Thank you and I agree!
Amazing the beauty hidden in what would appear to be "just" a log. Most people would have thrown that right in their fireplace !
Nice work 😉
Thank you very much!
I think it's really cool that you put up others' work, and explain what you're doing.
One of the most beautiful vases Ive seen to date. Apple is heaven in a tree.
Oh my God! This is one of the most amazing works I've ever seen. So beautiful.
Thank you very much!😊
A stunning looking vase Ron, once again masterfully turned.
Cheers
Mike
That is something else. I never knew that wood could be so beautiful.
That makes never want to throw a limb away again. Wonderful
Absolutely stunning! Have always loved the smell, feel, warmth and “personality” of wood. I am the weird old lady often seen roaming lumber yards inhaling deeply and touching the wood lovingly! Am recovering from cancer, and of course holed up due to Covid social distancing, and your beautiful work is giving me so much pleasure. Have never done any wood turning, just small projects, but your vids have turned into a spectator sport!! Thank you for sharing with us! Keep on turning, turning, turning!!🎵🎵
Diwatz glad I'm not the only one sniffing and feeling lol
The capper was the final shot of it with the flowers - so beautiful Rod 😃
Thank you very much!
My exact thoughts.
Just beautiful. I love the contrast grain pattern and soft glow.
Oh my! Astonishingly beautiful. Thank you!🍎
Beautiful apple wood released at the hands of a skilled lather!
Thanks very much, Valerie! 😊
You are so right it is very beautiful. The grain is wonderful
WoW, You sure did hit a homerun with that baby, Mr. Humphrey! TY ...Newk from Kentucky
I’ve just discovered your channel and watched 10 videos in a row- it's so relaxing 🌳 And vase is beautiful in my opinion ☺️
Thank you very much! Welcome to my channel! 😊
That’s lovely. Is your wife talented too? I find that with our friends. That if one is talented, usually so is the other one.
Yes, thank you fro asking! She makes an amazing variety of chocolate candies every year for the holidays, and also makes beautiful quilts.
You’re absolutely right, it is a beauty
Your apple log turned into a lovely piece of work!
Love to just watch you work!
Thanks
I would have never thought to use the shavings for smoking meats. Waste not want not.
Never wear rings or jewelry when operating a lathe.
Or any power tool
My neighbors wife never allowed her husband to remove his wedding band. His finger with the wedding band still on his finger was cut off while turning on a lathe, & currently kept in a clear glass jar filled with alcohol to preserve the finger.
You’re right. It’s beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
This apple log stem vase turned out beautiful. You are a true artist.
The brought out grain is lovely!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful stem vase. I share your love of Apple wood. Plum too.
Loved the raw edge just enough to add a ton of interest. Beautiful vase.
It's relaxing watching another Woodturner...lots of work...great video!!
What a great looking grain and live edge. It's great when the wood just does it for you.
I was given pieces like this and larger from an old felled apple tree. It is stunningly beautiful with almost-black spalted bands. Such a magic wood.
Indeed a real blessing, thanks for sharing with us
Hi Rod great job it is awesome. U couldn't have picked a better pice of wood !!! Our Lord at his best!!! And u added a little touch of man kind to top it all off. Fantastic 👍👍👍
This is definitely a piece of character Rod. Put a large bouquet in it and you have a centerpiece for any table. Semper fi. Carpe diem.
Absolutely beautiful, cant find a word to describe how beautiful and awesome that turned out to be.
You knocked it out of the park with this one.
It's beautiful ❤️ love the colours and grain, the humble apple 🍎 tree..
WOW!!! I can see why this is one of your favorite woods to turn. Beautiful! Well done, n thanks for sharing.
patricia here... what an absolutely gorgeous piece of wood!!!!!
That is a beautiful piece. I myself have been turning wood since 1993

Goes to show you how beautiful nature is. Thank you for another great video
As always, you brought out the best in that piece of wood. Gorgeous.

Beautiful, simply beautiful!
YES SIR, GOD HAS BLESSED US WITH TALENT, & WE SHOULD ALWAYS GIVE HIM THE GLORY!! BEAUTIFUL WORK, GOD BLESS...💖🙏💖🙏💖
going back enjoying your old videos, i’ve been branching out looking for new turners, but your skill, at getting a smooth result as you go, and shaping and... it’s just really clear how good you are at using these tools.
Very nice work. Applewood smoke and a beautiful vase from one small log.
Folks that don't make videos don't understand that high speed lets them see a lot more turning. Personally, I like it. Good job buddy, Larry
Beautiful stem vase Rod! Thank you for sharing it with us.👌👍😎JP
Wow🤯 loving the beautiful color and grain of the apple wood 😍🍎🌳
A blessing indeed! That has to be one of the beautiful turnings I have seen. Applewood is gorgeous.
Thanks so much!😊
I love how this piece turned out... Never knew applewood was so beautiful... Enjoyed the video.
What you do is magic! Sooo beautiful!!🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰
I am never going to eat another apple again without thinking of this beautiful eg of turning
Wow, breath taking!
Fantastic piece of timber the grain is impressive you can never tell what it is under the bark. Also helped a friend take an Apple down got most of it drying nearly ready to turn. Thank you for the inspiration.
I'm not a wood turner but spent 40 years of life as a machinist and I'm amazed at how little you hang on to swinging such a large workpiece. You have a great thing going here. You're passionate about your work, great video quality and a story telling voice. You should be doing radio. ;)
Very kind of you to say, Rick, thank you!
The beauty of this piece leaves me speechless!
Thanks very much, Sharonne!
That is stunning love it it’s amazing what nature can show us
Such a beautiful piece, this video has made apple my new favorite wood
Only a true artist (you) would see such possibilities in a piece of wood that would be considered firewood. Beautiful shape and figure. You are my favorite turner on CZcams. I am always inspired and encouraged in my own work when I watch your videos.
Thank you very much, Paul! That means a great deal to me and I appreciate it. 😊
Absolutely beautiful, definitely not what I expected to see. Amazing grain ❤️
Beautiful work again . The grain is stunning and I love how you can still see the organic shape of the log in the finished piece. Thank you for sharing
Thank you very much!
Thank you for a nice demo. Also FOR YOUR SERVICE
Oh my!! Just beautiful!! I have always wondered what apple would like in a turning. Amazing the different grains you can see in it.
You did justice to that beautiful piece of wood. I love the graceful line.
Gorgeous piece there! yeah! a Blessing for us too!
Absolutely beautiful. There's a story in every piece of wood, and you help to give the wood a voice to tell that story about it's life.
Semper Fi.
Thank you Clyde! SemperFi
This is ABSOLUTELY beautiful!
Came out beautiful, I'm envious.
Excellent Mr Rod. The grain is spectacular.
Beautiful just does not describe it, a true work of art that reveals what is hidden inside, to the untrained eye, an old piece of wood. Thanks for the unveiling!!!
Rod, that piece is beautiful. It is so interesting how the CREATOR puts this altogether.
Michaelangelo’s “David” was present even before he began to carve. Your initial confidence in the beauty of the wood before you even turned it reminded me of the “David.” The Psalmist says “God knew us even before we were born.”
Thank you for letting us see the art present and then come alive! It is a magnificent work! Just imagine how joyful God sees us as we are obedient in loving!
I just LOVE 💓 watching how you work with a wood lathe etc 👍🏻
A good lathe will be my next toy. I’ve always been amazed at what’s hidden in some ordinary pieces of wood. When I cut and split firewood I’m watching for grain and shapes and tossing aside pieces here and there for later woodworking projects. Fun to show someone a picture of a piece of firewood (“yeah, so?”) And then what I made with it (“really?!? That’s so cool!”).
So true, Bruce, I completely agree. Taking a chunk of firewood and making something beautiful from it is very rewarding.
Omg this vase would look stunning with wild flowers in it, I love it....well done
Beautiful!! I recently got a piece of apple wood myself, turned one small green bowl so far. Can't wait to turn more pieces from it, it really is some nice wood and awesome to turn.
You are gifted, what a blessing
Agreed, amazing colours!👍🏼
Beautiful piece. You can really see the detail of it at the end.
Why so many thumbs down ? ? ? How can 540 people not like how this rough piece of wood turned out so beautifully? What's wrong with them?
On a side note. You also narrate your work, so very well. A pleasure watching and listening.
You're very kind, thank you! Thumbs down from a haters don't bother me at all, I hope they find some happiness somewhere... Thanks again!
I ran into the same problem when I was turning a chalice a couple of weeks ago. Not only did I get too rough in turning it, but I made it come off, and one time it hit my face shield. Which taught me to take it easy and make sure when I tighten the chuck but make sure it was good and tight. Beautiful vase.
Totally AMAZING character in that piece of wood. There is no doubt that having the EYE to visualize is the least credited skill to any Craftsman. The ability to do the actual skill work obviously gets all the credit but in my opinion what separates the Craftsman from the master artist is the having the EYE and the skill come together in one. Well done sir, well done. 👍😇🙏👏
Absolutely stunning! WOW
That is a gorgeous piece! Apple wood has a beautiful scent when burned as well. I had some for fire wood many years ago.
Just watched it for the second time. Love the natural look.
That looks like liquid painting, just Remarkable! God is the best artist. Fantastic work!
Absolutely gorgeous!!!
God makes beautiful wood. He uses you to reveal that beauty! Thanks for allowing Him to use you this way. That vase is phenomenal.
Absolutely beautiful. I love the apple wood as well.
~Kevin
Fantastic work, you have captured the wood in it’s natural state
