Division hasn't been exposed to anybody who's been paying attention.
Wilder has always been unskilled and mostly unproven amongst the top level, as he avoided most top contenders of the era.
Fury has always been very inconsistent and also didn't fight many good guys of this era.
Joshua suffered an upset defeat and avenged it (as many great heavyweights such as Lennox Lewis have) and then lost to a generational P4P talent in Usyk. Joshua was looked at as the worst of the 3 for awhile because he lost so many times but the reason he lost was because unlike Fury and Wilder he was fighting top guy after top guy. Anybody who was paying attention and was unbiased knew this.
These truths have only been exposed to more casual fans.

No one rates Wilder. I would mildly disagree with your AJ assessment, his CV is not thin. It's easily the best of the three, but it's clear he's got shortcomings. However he's back on the rise and I think could win a belt again. But totally agree with you verdict on Fury. For years I've been perplexed how people legitimately say things like he's one of the greatest of all time, I think mostly because he keeps saying it over and over and people hang off his every word. Francis did the world a favour taking him down a few notches. The HW division has been in big trouble for two decades now so people who honestly think any of the current generation could even get into the top ten in the 90s are deluded. I think there are some prospects. Dubois I've seen live and picked him years ago but he's not lived up to the early promise, however excellent performance the other day. Jai Opetaia will step up to HW and could be very effective. Like the new style! When I started I was off camera and people told me to change that, and I've never looked back. Plus you're harder to replace with AI if you're on camera! But maybe only for a few months more...

Styles make fights. You can’t do triangle theory because different styles match up well against others. If Fury isn’t allowed to lean on his opponent, you’ll see how average he is. Wallin exposed that and AJ brutalized Wallin. Yet Fury would have never in a million years lost to Ruiz. You can’t just go with the “favorite”. I think there's a bit of hyperbole in this. I don't think Tyson Fury was " exposed" by Ngannou. when it comes down to it was just one fight which it was very likely he just took it not very seriously. Also there are great fighters who get dropped often by lesser opposition . Just look at Felix Trinidad and Miguel cotto for examples.
Likewise Joshua was not "exposed" by Usyk. Usyk was just more technically proficient and came with a great game plan. It's like saying Ali was "exposed" by Ken Norton in their first fight.
The heavyweight division " never being worse" is pretty insane when looking at the late 2000s early 2010s. There just weren't nearly as many Interesting fighters then and the two best fighters ( the Klitschkos) we knew would never fight each other.
The idea that it's the most protected division is pretty laughable. Fury has fought wilder, klitschko and will fight Usyk. Joshua has fought Usyk, povetkin, parker, ruiz. And wilder ( the most protected) has fought Ortiz( when he was feared) , Fury, and Parker.
Overall , I really like your videos. But I feel like this one is a bit too reactionary based just on the recent fights which are most likely at the tail end of these fighters careers. I would also mention that even in the great times of heavyweight boxing (1970's and 1990's) there were plenty of magazines and publications saying the division was garbage.

I would agree that AJ didn't get exposed, he actually even improved for Usyk-2 and still lost. That's just a genuine skill/style-matchup issue. But it's arguable Fury got exposed by Ngannou, who many people felt earned a win or at least a draw, hence all the "robbery" talk. Ngannou had never boxed under the lights before, and Fury knew Ngannou's reputation, didn't prepare properly, and debatably got cooked worse than the first time he fought wilder. That's a lot worse than being beaten in 2 competitive fights by the current champ and former undisputed cruiserweight champ in Usyk.
If conor mcgregor had sparked floyd mayweather or if it had been very close, we would probably have said he "exposed" floyd. So if Ngannou arguably beats Fury, it's not entirely unreasonable for people to say Fury got "exposed" even if it was just a little bit

Solid analysis. However I do find the facecam format to be less engaging as there is less dynamism, and much less to look at. I preferred the old style of video but a blend of the two may a good compromise between viewer retention and a greater personal presence. You could have the facecam take up less of the screen and isolate it to a corner or have your facecam be the background and add graphics on/ around it. Either way, very well written video and spot on diagnosis.

  • @AaronMichaelLong
    @AaronMichaelLong Před 4 měsíci +51

Heavyweight boxers have held onto their titles into their late 30s for a long time. Larry Holmes was 36 when Michael Spinks took him down, Muhammad Ali was 36 when he got beaten by Leon Spinks and Larry Holmes. Lennox Lewis retired at 37 with most of his belts, and the Klitschko brothers were 41 and 39 respectively when they were done. Sonny Liston allegedly was beaten by Muhammad Ali at age 34, but there's evidence to suggest that his age was misreported.
So the notion that all the top boxers being in their mid-to-late 30's is not, in and of itself, evidence that the division is lacking in talent, especially because of how *huge* heavyweight boxers have become. George Foreman was supposed to be a giant at 6'4", now he would the little guy, standing a tiny bit higher than Usyk.
If you can explain to me how a guy who's 6'3" tall can fight at cruiserweight, while Mike Tyson at 5'10" was fighting at heavyweight, then we can have a discussion about who is and isn't skilled. You really want to fix the heavyweight division? Make the fighers weigh in 10 minutes before the bell.

    - with the age argument you made comparing fury and ngannou, you should also take into consideration that fury has been in more wars. ngannou started late and hasn't taken as much damage. also, like he said, you don't fight wilder 3 times and come out unchanged. i do agree that wilder has been extremely protected but at the end of the day, he was an Olympian and you don't win a bronze medal without having SOME skill.
    - for joshuas fight with usyk, he wasn't exposed, he simply fought a better fighter. with that argument applied elsewhere, was spence exposed against crawford? I don't think so, I think he just fought a better man.

I truly believe in a lot of what it is that you were saying it is quite a shame to see the state of heavyweight boxing versus Cruiserweight. What was such huge spectacle to Feast Your Eyes Upon with such talents as the legendary Hall of Famers never put on a pair of boots and gloves. We don't need to go into detail but for case and point the Muhammad Ali's, the Joe frazier's, the Evander Holyfield etc, etc. When we mention these guys we're talking about 100% pure gladiators that was damn near willing to die in the ring for their pride and approve who was the better man it's almost like boxing as a whole became glamorized because now it's almost like WWE you never know what storyline what twist what turns. And it's kind of sad because we don't see a lot of promising heavyweights to step up through the ranks and reign supreme. So once again I thank you for a well thought-out video please keep up the good work I hope to see more great works from you in the future God bless you and have a great day🎉

New format is great, I think we listen to what you're saying more than we see the video, anyhow :D
Heavyweight boxing has always leaned older and not as technical; so there are often less heavyweight "boxers" and more heavyweight "punchers." The whole buzz about Fury was him being a heavyweight that boxed like a super middleweight. So taking his time with Wilder makes sense if you're worried about getting clobbered once by Wilder.
With Ngannou, I think a lot of people are overlooking the fact that Fury's team didn't know what to train for and Ngannou's MMA skills would be such a benefit. Ngannou getting out of Fury's clinches with sheer strength was probably unexpected by everyone except Ngannou's team. Same with Joshua v Ruiz; Joshua wasn't prepared for a shorter dude whose hands were that fast. And, Joshua probably didn't think Ruiz had it in him on such short notice.
Great video as always! In terms of young heavyweights, I'm stoked for Richard Torrez Jr. to finally face some tough opposition and same with Jared Anderson

Unless your not really paying attention, there is new blood in the heavyweight division, like Jared Anderson and Daniel Dubois. Also, while helpful in discussing talent, you cannot base the skill level of a fighter solely on their resume alone (especially nowadays with the BS 4-belt era nonsense). Some fighters never get the chance to really fight the best for boxing politics/business reasons, even if they are probably the best in their divisions.

I dunno hes got a slouchy loose body but when he stiffens up and stands tall he was probably 6'8 10 years ago. Just his knees buckling inwards loses half an inch where most people legs dont do that

Im an old guy now but i remember sitting every saturday night to watch " fight of the week" from madison square gardens. Such excitement and skill from fighters who fought regularly. Now we have big overweight lumps of lard who fight about once a year and demand millions of dollars before they step in the ring. There is god only knows how many champions of the world there are. I've lost count. Heavyweight boxing is in a sad and sorry state these days. I, for one have given up watching these duds. R.i.p. boxing.

I hate all this slander towards boxing because of what happened with Francis. The real bull shit imo, is that he wanted to be a boxer and has always dreamed of being a great boxer. So all the MMA guys claiming this as a victory for MMA are just reaching for straws. Yes, Tyson should've performed better but lets not ignore that Francis is physical specimen and AGAIN... HE WANTED TO BOX. That matters

We're in a golden age of heavyweight boxing where even the competitors are good (unlike the Klitschko era). And fans wont appreciate it until the mentioned boxer and the contenders retire.
