  • In the market for an affordable, AWD truck that checked several boxes, the Ford Maverick seemed like a great option for me. I’ve owned it now for 6 months and here are my thoughts on the truck and how it compares to the most popular mountain biker’s truck, the Toyota Tacoma.
    In the bed of the truck we've got our new @aribikes Wire Peak and some accessories from @BuiltRightInd

      That's because cult members usually never bother even trying anything else. If they did they would have found most other options offered better comfort, handling, performance, people and cargo space, and hauling capability. I've called the Tacoma the #1 truck for posers because its payload was always so pathetic. Some of that has finally been addressed for 2024 but at a sky high price tag and with an unproven drivetrain.

      The build quality, reliability and resale value are far lower than a Tacoma, but the Maverick is $20k less when comparably equipped. It really makes the decision a matter of personal choice. Comparing the Ranger to the Tacoma and you are nearly at price parity, so the Tacoma ends up providing greater value in my opinion.

      @davidalexispr Před měsícem +1

    • @derrickdean7224
      @derrickdean7224 Před měsícem +1

      @@davidalexispr The Maverick resale value is currently high because Ford throttles production to push the F150. The Bronco Sport and Escape share the platform and depreciate significantly moe than the Toyota options. On the other hand the Tacoma and 4runner still suffer less depreciation than the Maverick currently does and it is based on 40 years of reliability. In Texas and CA slightly used Tacos cost more than new ones, and that has been the case for at least ten years.

    I was checking out the 24 Tacoma and the Maverick, when I was able to sit in 24 Tacoma at the Texas State Fair before they came out that ended up telling me all that I needed to know. I do think instrument panel, HAVC, etc are nice on the Tacoma but when it comes to space the Maverick is really impressive, feels bigger than most midsize on the inside. That was a big factor for me and then having a hybrid that is MPG focused there was no contest in my mind and I ended up purchasing a Maverick.

      Yeah a big problem with the Tacoma has always been the high floor. Great for off-road, but the seating position makes it feel like you're driving a lifted Corolla. If you're tall it gets to be pretty uncomfortable pretty quickly. The 2024 is a little better than in the past but still cramped compared to the competition. The published specs are deceiving because they don't account for how low the seats are to the floor.

    I'll take the bait. The 2024 Taco has fixed every issue you mentioned. Seat, Power, fuel economy, looks, seat position, interior, Everything. Maverick is not faster than the new Taco, not close. Last test the new Taco got a combined 26 MPG. Ground clearance is one factor, it has no articulation compared with any Taco. Ground Clearance is not offroading, i suspect you will have two wheels in the air quite often with the Mav. The Taco has more features and options. It is much more expensive. To say this thing is anywhere near as good as a newTaco is just incorrect. Is it better for you, yes!! It's a perfect fit. I have never owned a Taco, but have driven a ton of them, have a 4Runner and a Ford, the quality difference is astounding and obvious. This is a Ford Escape with a bed. Not comparable but better for you. I take it you have never and will never own a Taco. I know a lot of people that loathe them, until they own one. It's one of those things, you just don't understand until you do. oh and the Taco will be more reliable, you will be in the shop with this maverick before it hits 30K.
    Sounds perfect for you. I'm glad you love it!! PS, the New Ford Ranger is a better truck in more ways than the Taco, the Mav just isn't.

      Hey Brian, Thanks for playing along and presenting some thoughtful responses. From what we saw, it didn't look like the '24 did overtake Mav in power/0-60 but it definitely looks like claimed MPG has improved, will be interesting to see real world how they perform.
      Correct, I've not owned a Tacoma but have put many many miles, both shuttling and road trips in friends from various generations. Without a doubt a better off roader, no argument there.
      We only suggested that in reality, most people don't actually off road hard enough to where they need the Tacoma and could get by with a more "townie" version. Since we've got another larger/taller and more capable vehicle when needed, this checked the boxes for light duty and commuting stuff.
      Thanks again for the awesome reply and if the new Ford Ranger was available at the time, that would have been the one we got!! It's sick!

    If I could get a mini truck with true 4wd then I would be interested. With AWD, It's a no to the Maverick. The Tacoma is too big and too expensive. If I could get a Toyota Hilux Champ, that would be the mini truck that I would want. Unfortunately, the Champ is not available in the US.

      I think you should take a look at what this AWD can do. If your not interested in towing more than 2000lbs the tremor package increases it's off road capabilities. I think the intelligent AWD system that Ford has in itself is a great system even without going to the tremor package. I was thoroughly surprised watching multiple off road reviews. One in particular went over the AWD system. What I found out was impressive. I have driven many tractors and have used the left or right braking to decrease the turning diameter. In low speeds in slippery conditions this AWD system does that. I also like the fuel economy but if hitting ice or snow the AWD kicks in automatically much better than 4x4 which is not suitable to run on dry pavement. There are a lot of advantages with this system and engine configuration. It may not have a 2 speed transfer case but it offers low and the engine puts out 277 ft lbs of torque at a measly 3000 rpm, that's impressive to say the least. The FX4 package or the tremor package both add a lot of equipment for off road use. The tremor offers lockers besides a host of other equipment.

      Maverick is not as good as a Tacoma off road, but it will still do more than what 99% of owners will ever try. You should check out some off roading videos, it may surprise you. Not what I'd choose to go rock crawling every weekend, but more than enough for anything I'd personally risk while making new truck payments.

      Up until 2024 the Tacoma's payload was pathetic, the interior cramped, and the engine underpowered. The only "real" truck thing it did well was off roading. And 99% of Tacoma owners will never hit the off road limits of the Maverick, much less their Tacoma. The Maverick still has a similar payload as the 2024 Tacoma and a larger interior. It definitely competes, as in it is taking away a lot sales from other midsize trucks.

      The Maverick is not for everyone but for some people it is more than enough f**** truck. Different tools for different jobs. A Tacoma is not a f**** truck if you are comparing it to Mack truck. Trucks come in all shapes and sizes for different purposes. Let's not knock other peoples choices. Its not the frame or lack there of that makes a vehicle a truck or not a truck. It is the intended purpose of the vehicle that makes it a truck. The Maverick is intended to be a light duty truck with a 1500lb payload. It fulfills that purpose in spades for people that don't need the added capability of the larger trucks from all manufactures.
