Race Report: Attempting to start Carl Cox's Suzuki XR69

- It's been over three years since I crashed the Carl Cox Motorsport Suzuki XR69 at Phillip Island...and made a right old mess of it. Friend, mechanic and all-round good egg, 'Nice Bob' has rebuilt and restored it to it's former glory, but we haven't tried to start it yet, until now. It's always been a bugger to start, so will it go after all this time?

Priceless! This is what CZcams is for. Let us know when you get to run that, I for one would travel to see and, more importantly, hear that going full chat. GS1000 was my first dream superbike back in the 70s. Posters on the wall and everything.

Beautiful machine, it's pretty these old school machines, a not easy awakening, big sweats, but it started! I own a 1100 gsxr from 1988, and if it hasn't turned for a long time, I take my time with it, disassemble the candles, a dose of magic product in the cylinders, bleed carburetors, and expose the sun to chase away the ambient humidity. Gradually she coughs a little, and she starts again without suffering! 😜 Good luck, they are superb! Phil.

Bob's your uncle? :D We met back in 2019 Michael at PI for the IC, when you rode for Team NZ under Cox. I provided you with a bunch of pics of you and the team racing. I was a guest of the NZ team doing some photos and just hangin with the Kiwis. I've built a couple of street legal XR69ish tributes .... you can see one of them over on my channel. Glad to see this one coming back to life, the framework is certainly a master class in brazing.

Real pity the Island Classic is no more, especially the International Challenge. I live on Phillip Island, ( I flag marshal there about 50 days a year), & it was my favorite event, even more enjoyable than MotoGP & World Supers. I remember you and that bike Neevesy. Hope you can find other events you can go to with that bike.

I sold a 82 Rd250LC to Carl via his friend Gavin around 2010 when i lived in Christchurch. Ask him if he still has it & if he wants to sell it back!
clutch plates stuck together after being in storage so long? couple good hard race starts will fix that right up
Wasn't the engine checked to see if it turned over ok, during the rebuild?

Sounded like she runs but find out which cylinder is misfiring. Plug,compression test, and then remove the main jet and verify intermediate jet is clean and then fire her up again. Sounds like it ran on 3 cylinders and the two at the end.
Hi Michael, Great vid. I had several GS 750's and 1000's in the early 80's. Is that engine different from the stock rd, as cam covers and head look v diff?

Interesting that the original XR69 has a GS1000 engine but that looks like a GSX1150EFE.

I think the xr69 were built for Formula TT
Beautiful bike, but that is not a GS1000 engine. I'd guess it's a bandit or GSXR converted to wire clutch. Still a cool bike. I sounds to my untuned ears like it's running on three cylinders, at least on part throttle.
Gsx1150 engine.
