Foot retention makes fixed gear meaningful

- Riding fixed gear is all about using your legs for full control, and if you want full control, you gotta have really good foot retention. It is known. This is the way. Okie-dokie!
Enjoy //Addvurt - Sport
I know clipless is more efficient, but I'm still a firm clipless hater for most riders. The ability to wear anything and still be able to ride is heavily underrated. Back when I thought I cared about cycling gear, I bought shorts, jerseys, borrowed some clipless shoes and pedals, got into Strava and stuff, and guess what? I barely ever rode. It always felt like a chore, and all the efficiency gains were lost (time wise) by me wasting time changing clothes. Many "serious cyclists" don't realise that it's not the be all, end all. I'm much happier ignoring my stats and riding in an open button up shirt and god damn jorts haha
But I'm still massively in favor of any sort of foot retention. Currently have straps on all 3 of my bikes, want to try out cages.
Great vid as always!
Yeah, you are completely right! Every complication takes you one step further from just riding. I just came back from a fun ride on the tracklocross in a sweater and casual shorts. I originally intended to just ride down to the store for a snack, but I ended up riding around for half an hour because the bike felt amazing :) I am terrified of Strava, because I know what can happen to me when I gamify aspects of my life. I have so far never measured any riding, and as long as I have fun, I won't. Might turn that discussion into a video :) Thank you for watching and writing!!!
@@addvurtbikes Oh, that'd be a great video! this topic is near and dear to my heart, mostly due to me spending tons of time on cycling subreddits, which are super American focused, and they don't seem to get any sort of casual cycling or cycling as transportation haha
"Don't follow me on Strava" or "Strava, not even once" :)
@@addvurtbikes Haha, can't wait to find either one of the titles come up in my notifs :D
If I had to pick though, the 2nd option fits better :D
got a pair of velosambas last week, they're great. big improvement over straps in terms of force transfer. it does feel different when pulling up/skidding, with straps it felt more like trying to lift a kettlebell with your foot where clipless feels more like you're trying really hard to pull your foot out of your shoe. after getting used to that change my skids and climbs are much more powerful. i was also surprised that once you get used to unclipping, it feels faster and safer pushing your foot out and away from your bike then back and then to the side if you're falling sideways. that said there's obviously tons of amazing riders who prefer straps and can bail out quickly.
been really enjoying your fixed gear journey and have got lots of good tips along the way! thank you!
The shoes are pretty awesome, right?? I love the kettlebell analogy! thank you for watching and writing!
I just converted my fixed gear to clipless and I’m excited to actually try them. So far I’ve only ridden around the intersection outside my house and I feel like I have a lot more control
let’s goooo! remember to practice some extra clipping out and in while riding so you have done it many times when you suddenly need to :)
It's not optional on a fixed gear
agreed
I need foot retension. Ive used Clipless, Fixie Straps and Toe Clips on my fixed bikes. Id rank them as Clipless for most control on speed up and stopping. Fixie Straps next. Once you get used to them they can be very good with control and stopping. Toe Clips come in last as far as these options. I recently purchased some one sided spd pedals with a flat pedal on one side. This way if i want to pedal around or make a quick run on not to demanding roads. I can pedal of in my sneakers boots sandals slippers.
that’s great! I really like combo pedals too, what they offer is genius
Which pedals have you tried? the doublesided M520? I've tried the PD-M540, PD-EH500 and PD-A600 and still using the latter 2 for my fitnessbike and roadmbike. Very impressed with the power transfer that is possible with cleats on. Also doubting if I have an advantage with the larger foot platform I'm getting with the PD-A600...
oh geez I can never remember the names. I have tried 3 Shimano ones. The big combo platform/spd, the small double spd, and the single-sided spd in this video. Yeah I think it feels amazing, the only thing I want straps for right now is doing jumps in a skate park :D
How do you add clips on a shoe? Thats a question I been asking since I first saw it.
You do not add cleats on a shoe.. the shoe comes with them pre installed. The shoes that he has are called "Velosamba" from Adidas.. I have them as well, and they are quite good. May be not very comfortable for walking very long distances, but for a day to day commute they are great. I go to the gym with them, then ride to work, I use them at work, and then ride back home. Between 9000 - 12000 steps per day with them, plus riding, and they feel okay.
Yeah, you buy cycling shoes that are designed to have cleats installed under them. The Velosambas didn't actually come with cleats, I had to buy them separately.
i want to make a fixie so bad bro
its so hard to fill your dreams where i live
I understand. The only specific thing that you REALLY need to find is a rear wheel with a fixed cog. Once you have that, you can use an old road bike or something for the rest of the bike.
Where do you live? Where I'm from is also a bit tough in regards to getting fixed gear specific parts, so I can relate lol
@@MarchuxProductions i live in Turkey you might know the economy is really bad and as far as i know there are no biking culture other than mtb which they dont even use it on trails
it is what it is man
i gotta figure something out
Now i want to finish building my fixed gera😢
You can do it! Break it down into small projects!
@@addvurtbikes yep patient is the key 🫂
What's the model of your shoes
adidas velosamba :) I don’t know if there are variations, but if you google that you will see it
does it clip out automatically? life if you skid does it clip out
No lmao that’s the point. U pull up and down and you’ll be in. U turn ur foot to the right and it’ll uncllip. Especially with SPD those keep you locked in and forward. I used to ride fixed for years and SPD are bullet. They last forever and hold tight. When u have to unclip they’re not gonna be hard to get out of
@@pitsa9838 bcs some of the influencers here in philippines they dont recommend to use that kind of cleats bcs it automatically clips out
the silver cleats that I used to have did sometimes clip out if I did a long skid downhill or something. but now with the black ones it seems like that won’t happen. I feel like I trust them now
@@addvurtbikescan i ask what is the brand and model of your cleats and if its okay for racing like drag sprints
Black Shimano cleats. I think they are called SH52. They are really good and you can surely race with them.
Nothing wrong with a front brake. I kinda value living to go without one
Yeah. I'm going to get it sorted out
painful to watch on your chain tension
You should see my other video! The chain tension in that one will put you in a coma! 💀
Bro got that road chain tension fr
bro got that track slack lol
Really? Meaningful? Did it gave your life meaning? Did it change how you view the world? Knowing finally the meaning of love? Really?
Fixed gear certainly adds meaning to my life, and it changes how I view the world. About the meaning of love, that's a different subject.
@@addvurtbikes no it didn't stop kidding yourself
@@turbo_nerd86 Is it that hard for you to believe that things can feel meaningful? I'm sorry but there are lots of wonderful things in life, and I'm enjoying them. Sounds like you are getting hung up on my happiness a little bit here.
@@addvurtbikes naah, what I'm getting hunged up to is the clickbaity and neurotic titles that you guys do. Really? Foot retention in a bike is "meaningful". Damn everything in the internet is so stupidly verbose nowadays
@@turbo_nerd86 But foot retention is what makes fixed gear meaningful :D You're better off with a freewheel if you don't have foot retention. Btw, who are "you guys"?
the only way to make a fixed gear meaningful is by going on a velodrome. The free wheel was invented 150 years ago, fixed gears on open roads is just for plain morons that wants to show off.
nice to meet you!
@@addvurtbikes will say the next person you crash into because you cannot properly brake
@@simonrano8072if you can’t control a breakless bike on the street thats a you problem🤷♂️
Show off to who? nobody cares, unless it's another fixed rider.
And you can still install brakes on both ends if you want to. Sounds like you just kinda suck.
@@cristianturcios6667its an everyone in your vicinity problem! it aint about weight, as far as i can tell its about 'purity' and asthetics. i can see the appeal but it is at the expense of emergency stopping power, you can ride as though it isn't there, though i know having the option probably changes the feeling. cant shake the feeling that they are shallow reasons to increase your risk of hurting someone, especially given the bike likely comes with one. famously, the guy in london that killed an old lady cos he couldnt stop in time riding brakeless.
