truly a film you can and should watch multiple times just as Quinn said with the water glass, everytime watching you pick up onto something new. Just the consistence in directing, droppin little hints right from the beginning like with Ruffalo struggling to get the gun out, the warden looking tense and even in his visions when his wife presumibly „died in a housefire“ she was actually wet and I was thinking why the hell is she wet when she died in that fire? 😪🤌🏻 What I only caught onto now through watching your reaction is Leo's sea- sickness in the beginning. Ruffalo says „he's not too fond of water“ - makes sense.. not them dropping hints IN THE VERY FIRST SCENE
49:50 - the books ends with "What is our next move, Chuck?" which is an absolutely chilling ending. What they did in the movie creates more of a bittersweet moment when Andrew decides how his story ends and the psychiatrist doesn't interfere.
You're not crazy, the patient indeed had no glass of water in her hand, the movie is RIDDLED with details like this that hint to the fact Teddy is insane, every time he smokes a cigarette, someone has to light it for him because patients aren't allowed matches. Also every time he smokes, the smoke flows backwards into the cigarette. Teddy is blocking out the water from his memory because he can't cope with Dolores drowning his kids (water)
For sure but critics and industry folks felt this film was too mainstream. Love King’s Speech but Shutter Island should’ve swept the 2011 Oscars. It has aged better, the acting, writing, editing, cinematography, score/sound design are all in top form.

Dennis Lehane's "Shutter Island" book is a true page-turner... if you don't know the ending. Unlike the movie, the book is much more subtle (or elegant) in the "early clues". It's been over a decade since I read it, but from what I recall, I didn't pick up on the storyline being possibly not real until he meets the woman in the cave. I think it was the entire sequencing leading up to the cave scene that just made me think: "What the _____ is going on?" I'm not sure if I'm remembering the book correctly, but I seem to remember that the ending of the book replicating the beginning (the boat scene)-giving a sense of this being a cyclical treatment.
Totally agree. Or how crazy the name twist was when you realize you were reading the letters instead of hearing the name aloud the entire time. I do think they simplified the 'code breaker' part and kind of took the power of that scene away. Instead of breaking the Who is 67 code, it was just already written on a post-it note he found.
Don't know if it's been mentioned yet or not but the glass and water scene was because he blocked out the memory so any time water is featured he doesn't actual see the water as part of his PTSD. Even the little cups he gets throughout the movie are empty to him but everyone else sees him act weird when he gets near water. It's a perspective switch between what everyone else sees, what teddy sees, and what andrew sees. Y'all had good catches on this, first time I watched it I caught something was up with the way they were treating him throughout but missed the glass all together, more so watch Ruffalo's eye contact, he gets approval from all the other people above him before ever moving forward. The CGI on the boat was the idea that boat never actually was moving. He just imagined it moving because he'd always wake up with morning sickness from the withdrawal so his mind would rationalize why he was sick as his made up character. The biggest reveal was the guy in ward C that was neighbor's to Andrew after he nearly killed some of the other patients in his delusions. It's only mentioned once that he kept attacking people thinking they were Nazi camp guards. And yes it is why the guards were all armed around him, wouldn't stop staring at him. Supposedly when they were filming they told the actors for the guards and staff that no matter what happens treat him like he's a patient and didn't let them know what Leo's lines were, hence why most of them never say a word or break their stance, they have no idea when the deliveries are coming. This is one of those multi-watch movies for all the details.
Yeah I remember the first time I saw it being like "why is she pretending to drink?" but I can't believe I never noticed she actually puts a glass down. Expectations are wild.
There are e ton of hints to what is going on through the whole movie: The guards at the beginning having their guns out and being nervous with Teddy around Chuck fumbles with the gun when trying to remove it from the holster (Showing that he was not a Marshal at all) The woman hushing Leo's characters recognized him as being a patient The employees being nervous whenever Leo is around (They know how violent he can be, knowing that he is a patient there) The woman with the glass of water glanced over at Chuck when Teddy asked her about him. (Because she knows he is a doctor there) The search party for Rachel Solando knew she did not exist, which is why they weren't searching very hard for her. The name of the movie Shutter Island itself is a clue, Shutter Island is an anagram of the words "Truth and Lies" and "Truth/Denials", just like how Rachel Solando is an anagram for Dolores Chanel (Michelle Williams) and Andrew Laeddis is an anagram of Edward Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio). When Chuck showed Teddy the Andrew Laeddis patient intake document, Teddy refused to look at it. He refused to look at it because if he did, it would shatter his present dissociative delusion.
I rarely guess the twist in movies such as this but I remember seeing this at a theatre and right from the opening with his clothes fitting so poorly on him I thought something was up.
i predicted both the prestige and shutter island twists, but i deffo got shutter's faster. the hints i noticed that led me to the twist were teddy going batsh*t crazy with the flashing lights in dr. cawley's office + the random memories + teddy wearing the asylum patients' outfit. i was like "there's no f***ing way him wearing that drip isn't some sort of foreshadowing or hint," i was right lol
I think she hushed because she was replicating what they told her to do which is to be quiet as she would obviously know chuck isn't a marshal, but I do think he was never a patient. He was onto them so they made him believe he was insane, Solando had to exist as she revealed new info to Teddy which hallucinations cannot do. He was set up since the beginning after getting his cigs stolen so he had to take the laced ones. He most likely spoke in his sleep and someone was always watching/listening to him so it was easy to keep planting ideas into his head and then he would have visions. The whole movie is just Teddy getting gaslighted 😂
First time watching this I was flabbergasted by the end how he's a patient there, but didn't quite get his final line in the movie. The second time I enjoyed picking up all the details knowing he's a patient, but his last line also sank in.. the therapy worked, he's no longer delusional, and that's even worse for him so he opts for getting a lobotomy.. absolutely mind blowing and one the most disturbing endings to a movie really. Edit: also, I've seen this movie many times, and I never caught the glass thing! Like, wth!

What I love about the twist is that not only do we find out the real story, the twist is also that the people running the facility were kind. How many horror movies have we seen about these type of asylums, where it's just sadists torturing mental patients? This time though, we see doctors so dedicated to healing, they got the whole island involved in trying to help him. This is actually how asylums started. They really were trying to find ways to heal people of things they had no idea how to treat. They did everything to make things calm, with their wide sprawling gardens and things like hydro and art therapy, hoping it would heal overstimulated minds. It was later they became places to store away "undesirables" and then eventually, with funding cut to nothing, we got places like the horrors of Willowbrook (if you're gonna look it up, be prepared. It's about kids). But we have to remember, before the advent of psychiatric medications, they had almost nothing. The doctors that came up with things like insulin comas, the lobotomy and ECT* really were trying to help people. However, like all power imbalances, a lot of times they ended up being used to subdue, not help. But I appreciate that the author and Scorsese made a point to show that there _were_ kind professionals who were trying to heal, even in those days. *ECT is still used today. Don't freak out - it's used because it works. It's a means of last resort, and you need two psychiatrists to sign off on it, but it really can help those for whom medication and therapy just don't work.
facts about that twist with them actually turning out to be the good guys. Couldn't have said it better. Til the last second I was convinced they were all some kind of messed up nazi fucks experimenting on mentally ill people 😭 I was thinking Kingsley was wayy too nice and calm to not be the bad guy
It's crazy that I never truly took note of this detail - you're right, you'd be hard-pressed to find a movie with an asylum in it in which the doctors and staff actually try to help the patients.
i'm autistic and have ADHD. one thing that i've begun to realize is that while many horrific things happened to patients throughout history, while a lot of it was cruel and inhumane, a lot of it did come from a place of genuinely wanting to help. but they had no idea how. so they'd kinda just throw everything at the wall to see if it stuck. some doctors went into it with cruelty in their hearts, sure. but for a lot, it was just trying to find something, anything to help. i love that this movie shows that side.
i also love how they mention the word "trauma" coming from the word "wound." there's something so compassionate in that approach. so often people who are traumatized are seen as just broken people. to be referred to as "wounded" means there's a possibility for healing. not always, but most of the time a wound can heal with proper care shown to the wound. i've seen this film so many times but today that one little moment is what's really sticking with me.
Very close to the book. The author has written several other books that have been faithfully adapted to film: a favorite is Mystic River( directed by Clint Eastwood). Leo gives an incredible performance in this one. The scene in the pond at the end is a gut punch! The ending in the book is more harsh unlike the movie: he never gets better. I like the movie ending that he had a breakthrough. Sad either way😢
Oh, wow. I didn't know it was a book. I'm curious how it was written in terms of the slow-burn reveal and how it was structured narratively. I often write my stories as I see them in my third eye, and they play out like films and movies. I'm excited to know what was carefully crafted from the original prose and what was a creative choice by the director. Always good to see the process both ways. I struggle with crafting concise explanations for esoteric things, especially the translation between a striking visual to words on paper in a way that doesn't use too many metaphors. 😂
Not following your understanding of the ending. They're the same in both from my memory. It's implied in both that he actually did remember, but chose the lobotomy to rid him of the memories/guilt of what he'd done to his wife after she killed their children.

Oh this movie was SO good in the theater. So many twists and turns. DiCaprio is so damn good in it too. Emotional roller coaster, lots of great suspensful moments, and every clue you need is there. HGIH rewatch value and you notice so much.
This is the movie that made me love Leonardo DiCaprio as an actor. Great reactions guys! Loved The Oak and Diamond Dave's confusion. Loved how The Answer just sat there and tried to take it all in. And LOVED that Mason Quinn didn't give a thing away!
Notice how the nurse and also the female patient who wrote run, when Teddy was asking them about Dr. Sheehan they looked towards Chuck first before they answered him because they knew who Chuck really was.
The author who wrote the book Shutter Island, Dennis Lehane, also wrote Mystic River (2003), The Drop (2014), and Gone Baby Gone (2007), all really good movies.
Scorsese has a way of pulling you into insanity and paranoia. He does a version of it in all his films, and it's always top-notch. The ending was hard to watch...but it touches on something very true about coping and rationalizing with the dark things in life. World class director.
@ct6852 meant as in I'm a empathy. Always have been. When I watch movies I put myself in the characters shoes. I can't help it. So this really kind of freaked me out to be like omg, could I do this? I've never had a nervous break or been diagnosed but I don't want things to be "too late" . Idk
@@kirsten9277 Yeah a good actor can really carry you through an experience to where you can empathize enough with their predicament that you can apply it to your own life and thinking. Sometimes I go through phases where movies seem silly and indulgent...but ultimately I think they have a lot of value. In a way that's hard to quantify. They train the mind somehow in a way that's also fun and entertaining.
You can see that every time Leo asks about Dr Sheehan, everyone gets nervous and sometimes looks at Mark Ruffalo. When the lady was describing Dr Sheehan as being a nice doctor and easy on the eyes, Mark looks genuinely flattered.
Tragic ending, but I can't even begin hoping to relate to Teddy. Who can imagine how damaged your mind would be if you witnessed your wife drowning your three children while simultaneously believing in her heart that they were simply at school, something sweet and innocent? We all hope that we would be able to turn around and cope with reality, but I think most of us would snap as well. It hurts on the inside seeing him willingly choose his death, by pretending he regressed, but it also makes sense that he wouldn't want to live with the guilt and pain anymore after so long. He'd rather die as a brave marshall, hot on the case.
I haven't watched this in maybe 5+ years. I've had a daughter since then. The ending always hit me hard but when I watched a different reaction video a few weeks ago I wasn't expecting to be completely crushed by just the thought of it. I literally had to step away from the screen for a bit. Like you say, I can't imagine the reality.
When Leo pretends to regress in order to get the lobotomy so that he can be "freed" from all the horrors of his past, that scene hits so hard. I mean would anyone want to live with the knowledge that your loved one murdered your children? And to be the one to find them like that.. Not to even mention the fact the he had all the signs that his wife was unwell and did nothing, and that cost him everything he loved most ? ... No wonder he willingly chose to be lobotomised. I think this is that kind of movie that, the more times you watch it, the more you apreeciate the brilliance behind it. Another amazing reaction from you guys !!
All that and the trauma he had from being in the war and seeing the camps and right after that he was a Marshal that saw even more messed up things surely
There's so many clues throughout the movie but they're subtle so you won't always see them the first time. The second time watching this movie is a completely different experience. Also many people get the ending wrong. Leo is crazy but he was still in his right mind when he essentially volunteered to be lobotomized. Leo didn't trust himself that he could be saved so he pretended to relapse.
I don’t think he didn’t trust himself at the end. I think he was “healed” but chose to be lobotimised because he didn’t want to live with the pain and guilt of what really happened. “Which is better? To live as a monster or die a good man?” He didn’t want to go on living, and the lobotomy was him giving up on life.
I'm not convinced he was crazy, I still think they made him crazy as he was onto them which is the only reason he accepted the job and the only reason there was a job to begin with
Yes that ending I think they said but I always took the "Is it better to live as a monster or to die a good man?" As a Andrew still was clear he just didn’t want to live in the knowing what he did, so he went willingly to get his lobotomy … this movies amazing is fantastic in it
I watched this movie after my Pysch professor was telling us about it. She didn’t tell us the plot, the topic were covering was on the human brain and what doctors have learned about the effects trauma can cause on various parts. (We also learned a lot by listening to the lyrics of Trains, “Hey Soul Sister”. Anyway, I went into class on the Monday morning to tell her when I figured out the plot,(feeling quite proud of myself) to be told the answer is given at the beginning.
Phenomenal acting all around but the part where Leo has to get his kids out of the lake is some of the best acting I've ever seen. You really feel like his whole world has ended.
You will notice that water and fire play two important elements in Shutter Island. Water, because Andrew’s kids drowned in a lake. You will observe, from the beginning to the Shutter Island ending, that water makes Andrew/Edward very uncomfortable. His mind blocks out water as much as it can. Fire, because his apartment was burnt down. His mind doesn’t block out the fire because he doesn’t blame himself for the fire in the apartment. He blames a fictional character called Andrew for it.
No he still blames himself which is Andrew because he was being told she wasn't right in her mind but he didn't listen so he "Lit the match that killed her" by not getting her mental help after she did that and just making it worse
If you guys haven't seen it, I recommend watching Leo in one of his early "Oscar worthy" roles in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". He is phenomenal and it also stars Johnny Depp. You didn't mention it during the movie, but the imagined "cave nurse" also played the Warden's wife in "The Green Mile".
38:31 Leo's character doesn't want to live without his delusions as this means he has to live with knowing about his dead family, the crimes he committed and the guilt that comes from all this. He would rather be lobotomised to escape this reality so he pretends that he is still delusional. He would rather die as "Teddy" the US marshal than live as Andrew the delusional murderer. Hence "Which would be worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?"
I had a different ending interpretation in mind. I believe the program involves convincing him of the "real story", that is, in fact, fake. He finally realizes that's their plan, so he pretends to be crazy again to give the impression that their program failed so they might as well kill him. He doesn't want to be a forced lab rat anymore. Too many layers?
Trust me, I was so confused right to the lighthouse reveal. And even then, I had to rewind it a few times! And I agree that he did that at the end on purpose. I've always been a fan of Leo, and this one is very high on the list!

The water triggers his trauma so he blocks it out. That's why he was sick with the boat ride and that's why he even blocked see the water that the woman drank. It trigger his wife drowning his children so he blocks it out or it makes him sick.
I've seen this movie more than 10 times and I had never noticed that part with the lady drinking from the imaginary glass. You guys are also the first reactors I've who have caught, that great catch.
Im with Oak, as a parent I really struggle to watch anything with kids in danger, harmed, scared, or killed. I had a hard time before but now as a parent its almost impossible for me to watch and if I see it, its hard to shake. This movie is good and dark. The twist is great. But due to the kids factor I have only been able to watch it a couple times and I fast forward that part. I love watching you guys. I love how different you all are and how you react. Its awesome that 3 men can watch movies and get into them even if they arent 'guy movies' and even get emotional. Keep the channel going guys. 👍

I read the book when the movie was coming out in a period of 2-3 days and closing the pages trying to sleep totally added to the questions and theories swimming in my head I love this post discussion so much 😁
I’m sure others have pointed some of these things out but there are a obviously a lot of clues throughout. In the scenes where they are interviewing patients, you will see guards behind Leo and the patient they are interviewing, but there isn’t a guard behind Mark Ruffalo, showing they are keeping a close watch on the patients. Also there is a lot of symbolism between Fire and Water. Leo has repressed the memories of his children drowning and thus “blocks out” water. Which is why when the patient drinks the glass of water, the glass disappears.
48:20 - I think he was just done with everything. He woke up to his actual life, his experience in war, his horrific mistakes and the tragedy that followed as a consequence of them, and was just done with life, and didn't want continue living as the monster Andrew, so he rather die as the good man the marshal Ted. And his psychiatrist knew at the end, he realized it and let it happen which such a powerful moment. The psychiatrist knows it means a lot to Andrew to have this final personal heroic moment of going out on his own terms. This moment actually was original in the movie, it doesn't appear in the book :) Just what a movie!
I found this film is more enjoyable the second time, once you can understand what's happening. The first time it keeps you busy trying to solve a mystery where the puzzle pieces don't really fit together. Even the first time, though, it creates a pretty killer atmosphere from the very first scene that is more than enough to carry it (along with some great acting performances). It reminds me a bit of the film 'Session 9' likely due to the mental hospital in the Northeast location.
Didn't look at all 252 comments, so it may have been said. I looked at analysis videos and they said: Because of the PTSD based on what his wife did, Leo's character had a problem with "Water". He got sick on the boat... the storm brought on the migraine and etc. Almost every scene with lots of water, he went a little wonky, including the patient lady (from his POV) looking at her, drinking the glass of water /w no water or glass. From our POV there was a cup of water put down on the table. Also bet you didn't notice when Leo asked that same lady what was Sheehan like, she looked dead at Mark and said "he's easy on the eyes". Let's not forget the guy he beat up in ward C, saying it was all for him and the Smegal lady at the beginning giving the finger to lips sssshhhh motion... (she and many more, knew it was all an act). BTW what got me was near the end, I realized his wife was 100% card carrying insane.

to answer your question, yes. i was totally confused and the worst part of it was that when i decided to watch this movie, i already had a headache. i decided to watch it because i have seen recommendations of it from twitter and got so curious about the backstory of that part when leonardo went back home and finding her wife by the lake. and guess what? my headache got worse when i finished the movie because of all the confusion and questions running through my mind. but oh, how i would love to watch it again for the first time and get bombarded with excitement by the nuances and subtle hints that i barely noticed the first time and finally understood the next times i watched it. love your reaction as always and dont worry, i was just as confused as you all were.

Thank you for reacting to one of my all-time personal favourite psychological horror drama films which is a rarity of Martin Scorsese to direct given his high profile for Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and recently Killers of the Flower Moon. It took me 3 times to watch the film to see the signs that Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis (cool fictional character names) is not who we thought he is. At the end of the film, his last words “What could be much worse in this place: live as a monster or die as a good man” is an indicator that Laeddis opted out for the “lighthouse icepick” due to the fact he got to the point of no longer handling the trauma of killing his wife for killing his kids and not wanting to regress restarting the entire cutting-edge roleplay all over again. As much as I know that it was all a roleplay: I loved the scene of Dr Rachel Solando in the cave, got a feeling it’s real (yet Dr Cawley brushed it off as fake hallucinations in Laeddis’ mind) as I could see this play a role in the plot of a continuation miniseries that I call “Escape From Shutter Island”. No matter if he was thinking of something in the past that’s true or not - the US army liberation of Dachau (among the early Nazi campsites to appear in the Holocaust) resulted in the soldiers and surviving Holocaust prisoners participated in a revenge killing (execution squad-esque) on the camp guards except those who faced the music in the criminal courts. It did happen in our world. An investigation conducted by US army Lieutenant-colonel Joseph Whittaker was suppressed by US army general George Patton and a Bavaria governor to cover up what Laeddis described as “not warfare but murder [on both sides]”. I do believe Laeddis’ involvement in the Dachau liberation and revenge killings was true.
y favourite line in this whole movie is "it was the smoke that got her, not the fire". Its only an important distinction when it comes to pain of death. Can't bear to accept she may have suffered that. It is a line that only exists develop teddy's character as a husband.
Oak seems a little too clued in for his first time watching haha. I suspect he caught more of the movie in hotels than he's letting on 😅 enjoyed the reaction though! One of my favourite films.
Shutter Island is such a great movie. The whole glass not being there and then there was just a mistake when filming. As far as I can tell, it wasn’t suppose to hint at anything.
This movie is so good! That last line gets me every time. Have you guys heard of The Count of Monte Cristo movie from the early 2000's?? I bet you'd love it.
Oh, you're better than I was. I was confused all the way up to the end reveal and explanation. I was convinced he was a real marshal and the entire island was diabolical, trying to vanish him by slowly gaslighting him into thinking he's been insane the whole time. 'Cause they slowly give him pills, force him to have to change out of his plainclothes into orderly's clothes, vanish his partner, then say, "Oop, turns out this guy's insane and he's in the perfect spot!", and the final stage would be to force him into having to dress in patients' clothes. There's still tons of stuff that's kinda crazy. Like WHY would Dr. Cawley have a desk in the lighthouse, WITH a working telephone line? And power for lighting? It's the most impractical place to get to and from. He clearly doesn't see any patients there. The doctors don't hodl meetings there. It's the most impractical place to run a telephone line. Or power. Or keep those maintained. Where's the bathroom? His office serves no practical purpose being there, especially when the lighthouse holds no other visible operation. Like a guard said it was used for sewage treatment or something, but that would presumably require more specialized plumbing equipment and such. And why would it be separated from the main island itself, since then sewage lines need to run to and from it? Also, lobotomies don't seem to require a whole lotta specialized setup, mostly hand tools for performing the procedures. Seems like they'd be easily hidden, especially in such a large facility on a large island. It was the anagram name thing that finally forced me to have to accept and concede he was Laeddis the whole time. That and Cawley not dying when he's shot. But Cawley's office setup at the end appears to exist solely to be the opposite of what Teddy (and us the audience) were expecting or imagining.. This movie's just fantastic to me an' I can never get enough of it.

I thought early on that he must be a patient, but I just couldn't figure out why. I thought maybe he just couldn't get over his wife's death. The reveal at the end hit big. I find it hard to imagine a worse scene to try to overcome with any type of "normal" life. I want to watch it again and try to see all the clues that were given. It was a good catch, right off the bat, as to the way the guards greeted them at the dock. I could feel the relief from Diamond Dave, when he decided to just stop trying, after agonizing over the glass. 😊

truly a film you can and should watch multiple times just as Quinn said with the water glass, everytime watching you pick up onto something new. Just the consistence in directing, droppin little hints right from the beginning like with Ruffalo struggling to get the gun out, the warden looking tense and even in his visions when his wife presumibly „died in a housefire“ she was actually wet and I was thinking why the hell is she wet when she died in that fire? 😪🤌🏻
What I only caught onto now through watching your reaction is Leo's sea- sickness in the beginning. Ruffalo says „he's not too fond of water“ - makes sense.. not them dropping hints IN THE VERY FIRST SCENE

What they did in the movie creates more of a bittersweet moment when Andrew decides how his story ends and the psychiatrist doesn't interfere.

You're not crazy, the patient indeed had no glass of water in her hand, the movie is RIDDLED with details like this that hint to the fact Teddy is insane, every time he smokes a cigarette, someone has to light it for him because patients aren't allowed matches. Also every time he smokes, the smoke flows backwards into the cigarette.
Teddy is blocking out the water from his memory because he can't cope with Dolores drowning his kids (water)
More like, he cannot cope with having to kill his wife after she murdered their kids.

For sure but critics and industry folks felt this film was too mainstream. Love King’s Speech but Shutter Island should’ve swept the 2011 Oscars. It has aged better, the acting, writing, editing, cinematography, score/sound design are all in top form.

Dennis Lehane's "Shutter Island" book is a true page-turner... if you don't know the ending. Unlike the movie, the book is much more subtle (or elegant) in the "early clues". It's been over a decade since I read it, but from what I recall, I didn't pick up on the storyline being possibly not real until he meets the woman in the cave. I think it was the entire sequencing leading up to the cave scene that just made me think: "What the _____ is going on?" I'm not sure if I'm remembering the book correctly, but I seem to remember that the ending of the book replicating the beginning (the boat scene)-giving a sense of this being a cyclical treatment.
Totally agree. Or how crazy the name twist was when you realize you were reading the letters instead of hearing the name aloud the entire time. I do think they simplified the 'code breaker' part and kind of took the power of that scene away. Instead of breaking the Who is 67 code, it was just already written on a post-it note he found.
Don't know if it's been mentioned yet or not but the glass and water scene was because he blocked out the memory so any time water is featured he doesn't actual see the water as part of his PTSD. Even the little cups he gets throughout the movie are empty to him but everyone else sees him act weird when he gets near water. It's a perspective switch between what everyone else sees, what teddy sees, and what andrew sees. Y'all had good catches on this, first time I watched it I caught something was up with the way they were treating him throughout but missed the glass all together, more so watch Ruffalo's eye contact, he gets approval from all the other people above him before ever moving forward. The CGI on the boat was the idea that boat never actually was moving. He just imagined it moving because he'd always wake up with morning sickness from the withdrawal so his mind would rationalize why he was sick as his made up character. The biggest reveal was the guy in ward C that was neighbor's to Andrew after he nearly killed some of the other patients in his delusions. It's only mentioned once that he kept attacking people thinking they were Nazi camp guards. And yes it is why the guards were all armed around him, wouldn't stop staring at him. Supposedly when they were filming they told the actors for the guards and staff that no matter what happens treat him like he's a patient and didn't let them know what Leo's lines were, hence why most of them never say a word or break their stance, they have no idea when the deliveries are coming.
This is one of those multi-watch movies for all the details.

There are e ton of hints to what is going on through the whole movie:
The guards at the beginning having their guns out and being nervous with Teddy around
Chuck fumbles with the gun when trying to remove it from the holster (Showing that he was not a Marshal at all)
The woman hushing Leo's characters recognized him as being a patient
The employees being nervous whenever Leo is around (They know how violent he can be, knowing that he is a patient there)
The woman with the glass of water glanced over at Chuck when Teddy asked her about him. (Because she knows he is a doctor there)
The search party for Rachel Solando knew she did not exist, which is why they weren't searching very hard for her.
The name of the movie Shutter Island itself is a clue, Shutter Island is an anagram of the words "Truth and Lies" and "Truth/Denials", just like how Rachel Solando is an anagram for Dolores Chanel (Michelle Williams) and Andrew Laeddis is an anagram of Edward Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio).
When Chuck showed Teddy the Andrew Laeddis patient intake document, Teddy refused to look at it. He refused to look at it because if he did, it would shatter his present dissociative delusion.

I rarely guess the twist in movies such as this but I remember seeing this at a theatre and right from the opening with his clothes fitting so poorly on him I thought something was up.
i predicted both the prestige and shutter island twists, but i deffo got shutter's faster. the hints i noticed that led me to the twist were teddy going batsh*t crazy with the flashing lights in dr. cawley's office + the random memories + teddy wearing the asylum patients' outfit. i was like "there's no f***ing way him wearing that drip isn't some sort of foreshadowing or hint," i was right lol
I think she hushed because she was replicating what they told her to do which is to be quiet as she would obviously know chuck isn't a marshal, but I do think he was never a patient. He was onto them so they made him believe he was insane, Solando had to exist as she revealed new info to Teddy which hallucinations cannot do. He was set up since the beginning after getting his cigs stolen so he had to take the laced ones. He most likely spoke in his sleep and someone was always watching/listening to him so it was easy to keep planting ideas into his head and then he would have visions. The whole movie is just Teddy getting gaslighted 😂
One very subtle thing at the end is that as he’s walking away he doesn’t respond to the Dr. calling him Teddy.
First time watching this I was flabbergasted by the end how he's a patient there, but didn't quite get his final line in the movie. The second time I enjoyed picking up all the details knowing he's a patient, but his last line also sank in.. the therapy worked, he's no longer delusional, and that's even worse for him so he opts for getting a lobotomy.. absolutely mind blowing and one the most disturbing endings to a movie really.

What I love about the twist is that not only do we find out the real story, the twist is also that the people running the facility were kind.
How many horror movies have we seen about these type of asylums, where it's just sadists torturing mental patients? This time though, we see doctors so dedicated to healing, they got the whole island involved in trying to help him.
This is actually how asylums started. They really were trying to find ways to heal people of things they had no idea how to treat. They did everything to make things calm, with their wide sprawling gardens and things like hydro and art therapy, hoping it would heal overstimulated minds.
It was later they became places to store away "undesirables" and then eventually, with funding cut to nothing, we got places like the horrors of Willowbrook (if you're gonna look it up, be prepared. It's about kids). But we have to remember, before the advent of psychiatric medications, they had almost nothing. The doctors that came up with things like insulin comas, the lobotomy and ECT* really were trying to help people. However, like all power imbalances, a lot of times they ended up being used to subdue, not help.
But I appreciate that the author and Scorsese made a point to show that there _were_ kind professionals who were trying to heal, even in those days.
*ECT is still used today. Don't freak out - it's used because it works. It's a means of last resort, and you need two psychiatrists to sign off on it, but it really can help those for whom medication and therapy just don't work.

It's crazy that I never truly took note of this detail - you're right, you'd be hard-pressed to find a movie with an asylum in it in which the doctors and staff actually try to help the patients.
i'm autistic and have ADHD. one thing that i've begun to realize is that while many horrific things happened to patients throughout history, while a lot of it was cruel and inhumane, a lot of it did come from a place of genuinely wanting to help. but they had no idea how. so they'd kinda just throw everything at the wall to see if it stuck. some doctors went into it with cruelty in their hearts, sure. but for a lot, it was just trying to find something, anything to help. i love that this movie shows that side.
i also love how they mention the word "trauma" coming from the word "wound." there's something so compassionate in that approach. so often people who are traumatized are seen as just broken people. to be referred to as "wounded" means there's a possibility for healing. not always, but most of the time a wound can heal with proper care shown to the wound. i've seen this film so many times but today that one little moment is what's really sticking with me.
Very close to the book. The author has written several other books that have been faithfully adapted to film: a favorite is Mystic River( directed by Clint Eastwood). Leo gives an incredible performance in this one. The scene in the pond at the end is a gut punch! The ending in the book is more harsh unlike the movie: he never gets better. I like the movie ending that he had a breakthrough. Sad either way😢

I often write my stories as I see them in my third eye, and they play out like films and movies. I'm excited to know what was carefully crafted from the original prose and what was a creative choice by the director.
Always good to see the process both ways. I struggle with crafting concise explanations for esoteric things, especially the translation between a striking visual to words on paper in a way that doesn't use too many metaphors. 😂

Not following your understanding of the ending. They're the same in both from my memory. It's implied in both that he actually did remember, but chose the lobotomy to rid him of the memories/guilt of what he'd done to his wife after she killed their children.

Oh this movie was SO good in the theater. So many twists and turns. DiCaprio is so damn good in it too. Emotional roller coaster, lots of great suspensful moments, and every clue you need is there. HGIH rewatch value and you notice so much.

Notice how the nurse and also the female patient who wrote run, when Teddy was asking them about Dr. Sheehan they looked towards Chuck first before they answered him because they knew who Chuck really was.
The author who wrote the book Shutter Island, Dennis Lehane, also wrote Mystic River (2003), The Drop (2014), and Gone Baby Gone (2007), all really good movies.

Scorsese has a way of pulling you into insanity and paranoia. He does a version of it in all his films, and it's always top-notch. The ending was hard to watch...but it touches on something very true about coping and rationalizing with the dark things in life. World class director.

@@kirsten9277 Yeah a good actor can really carry you through an experience to where you can empathize enough with their predicament that you can apply it to your own life and thinking. Sometimes I go through phases where movies seem silly and indulgent...but ultimately I think they have a lot of value. In a way that's hard to quantify. They train the mind somehow in a way that's also fun and entertaining.
You can see that every time Leo asks about Dr Sheehan, everyone gets nervous and sometimes looks at Mark Ruffalo. When the lady was describing Dr Sheehan as being a nice doctor and easy on the eyes, Mark looks genuinely flattered.
Tragic ending, but I can't even begin hoping to relate to Teddy. Who can imagine how damaged your mind would be if you witnessed your wife drowning your three children while simultaneously believing in her heart that they were simply at school, something sweet and innocent? We all hope that we would be able to turn around and cope with reality, but I think most of us would snap as well. It hurts on the inside seeing him willingly choose his death, by pretending he regressed, but it also makes sense that he wouldn't want to live with the guilt and pain anymore after so long. He'd rather die as a brave marshall, hot on the case.
I haven't watched this in maybe 5+ years. I've had a daughter since then. The ending always hit me hard but when I watched a different reaction video a few weeks ago I wasn't expecting to be completely crushed by just the thought of it. I literally had to step away from the screen for a bit. Like you say, I can't imagine the reality.
When Leo pretends to regress in order to get the lobotomy so that he can be "freed" from all the horrors of his past, that scene hits so hard. I mean would anyone want to live with the knowledge that your loved one murdered your children? And to be the one to find them like that.. Not to even mention the fact the he had all the signs that his wife was unwell and did nothing, and that cost him everything he loved most ? ...
No wonder he willingly chose to be lobotomised.
I think this is that kind of movie that, the more times you watch it, the more you apreeciate the brilliance behind it.

There's so many clues throughout the movie but they're subtle so you won't always see them the first time. The second time watching this movie is a completely different experience. Also many people get the ending wrong. Leo is crazy but he was still in his right mind when he essentially volunteered to be lobotomized. Leo didn't trust himself that he could be saved so he pretended to relapse.
I don’t think he didn’t trust himself at the end. I think he was “healed” but chose to be lobotimised because he didn’t want to live with the pain and guilt of what really happened. “Which is better? To live as a monster or die a good man?” He didn’t want to go on living, and the lobotomy was him giving up on life.
I'm not convinced he was crazy, I still think they made him crazy as he was onto them which is the only reason he accepted the job and the only reason there was a job to begin with

I watched this movie after my Pysch professor was telling us about it. She didn’t tell us the plot, the topic were covering was on the human brain and what doctors have learned about the effects trauma can cause on various parts. (We also learned a lot by listening to the lyrics of Trains, “Hey Soul Sister”. Anyway, I went into class on the Monday morning to tell her when I figured out the plot,(feeling quite proud of myself) to be told the answer is given at the beginning.

Phenomenal acting all around but the part where Leo has to get his kids out of the lake is some of the best acting I've ever seen.

Shutter Island and Inception both came out in 2010, and DiCaprio's characters in both have very similar tragic backstories.

Like basically both movies are about the main character’s (both played by Leo) inability to accept the death of his wife.
This is just insane in this: Leo, Ruffalo, Williams, Clarkson, Haley, Kingsley are all on top form. And ofc, Scorsese directed the hell out of this.
You will notice that water and fire play two important elements in Shutter Island. Water, because Andrew’s kids drowned in a lake. You will observe, from the beginning to the Shutter Island ending, that water makes Andrew/Edward very uncomfortable. His mind blocks out water as much as it can. Fire, because his apartment was burnt down. His mind doesn’t block out the fire because he doesn’t blame himself for the fire in the apartment. He blames a fictional character called Andrew for it.
No he still blames himself which is Andrew because he was being told she wasn't right in her mind but he didn't listen so he "Lit the match that killed her" by not getting her mental help after she did that and just making it worse
If you guys haven't seen it, I recommend watching Leo in one of his early "Oscar worthy" roles in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". He is phenomenal and it also stars Johnny Depp. You didn't mention it during the movie, but the imagined "cave nurse" also played the Warden's wife in "The Green Mile".

38:31 Leo's character doesn't want to live without his delusions as this means he has to live with knowing about his dead family, the crimes he committed and the guilt that comes from all this. He would rather be lobotomised to escape this reality so he pretends that he is still delusional.
He would rather die as "Teddy" the US marshal than live as Andrew the delusional murderer.
Hence "Which would be worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?"
I had a different ending interpretation in mind.
I believe the program involves convincing him of the "real story", that is, in fact, fake. He finally realizes that's their plan, so he pretends to be crazy again to give the impression that their program failed so they might as well kill him. He doesn't want to be a forced lab rat anymore.

The water triggers his trauma so he blocks it out. That's why he was sick with the boat ride and that's why he even blocked see the water that the woman drank. It trigger his wife drowning his children so he blocks it out or it makes him sick.
I think the theory that teddy is not andrew ladis is one of the most solid conclusions and double twists in all of movie history.

I've seen this movie more than 10 times and I had never noticed that part with the lady drinking from the imaginary glass. You guys are also the first reactors I've who have caught, that great catch.
Im with Oak, as a parent I really struggle to watch anything with kids in danger, harmed, scared, or killed. I had a hard time before but now as a parent its almost impossible for me to watch and if I see it, its hard to shake.
This movie is good and dark. The twist is great. But due to the kids factor I have only been able to watch it a couple times and I fast forward that part.

I'm surprised why most people don't understand this movie in one go, oh Martin, you are a great master, I take off my hat.
I’m sure others have pointed some of these things out but there are a obviously a lot of clues throughout. In the scenes where they are interviewing patients, you will see guards behind Leo and the patient they are interviewing, but there isn’t a guard behind Mark Ruffalo, showing they are keeping a close watch on the patients. Also there is a lot of symbolism between Fire and Water. Leo has repressed the memories of his children drowning and thus “blocks out” water. Which is why when the patient drinks the glass of water, the glass disappears.
the fact that the Oak sensed something was wrong in the first 30 second for how they greeted the "Marshalls" is mesmerizing 🤯
You all should have gotten the end by the last line Leo says. I did when I saw it in the theaters.

48:20 - I think he was just done with everything. He woke up to his actual life, his experience in war, his horrific mistakes and the tragedy that followed as a consequence of them, and was just done with life, and didn't want continue living as the monster Andrew, so he rather die as the good man the marshal Ted.
And his psychiatrist knew at the end, he realized it and let it happen which such a powerful moment. The psychiatrist knows it means a lot to Andrew to have this final personal heroic moment of going out on his own terms. This moment actually was original in the movie, it doesn't appear in the book :)

This is a great movie and a great story but it’s also just beautiful to look at.
I found this film is more enjoyable the second time, once you can understand what's happening. The first time it keeps you busy trying to solve a mystery where the puzzle pieces don't really fit together. Even the first time, though, it creates a pretty killer atmosphere from the very first scene that is more than enough to carry it (along with some great acting performances). It reminds me a bit of the film 'Session 9' likely due to the mental hospital in the Northeast location.
Didn't look at all 252 comments, so it may have been said. I looked at analysis videos and they said: Because of the PTSD based on what his wife did, Leo's character had a problem with "Water". He got sick on the boat... the storm brought on the migraine and etc. Almost every scene with lots of water, he went a little wonky, including the patient lady (from his POV) looking at her, drinking the glass of water /w no water or glass. From our POV there was a cup of water put down on the table. Also bet you didn't notice when Leo asked that same lady what was Sheehan like, she looked dead at Mark and said "he's easy on the eyes". Let's not forget the guy he beat up in ward C, saying it was all for him and the Smegal lady at the beginning giving the finger to lips sssshhhh motion... (she and many more, knew it was all an act).
BTW what got me was near the end, I realized his wife was 100% card carrying insane.
If you guys haven't seen it I highly recommend "Mystic River" it's such a great movie with Kevin Bacon, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins. Would love your reactions to that 👍
I absolutely love this movie, brilliantly written and the actors are 🔝👏🏻 not trying to sound condescending but it surprises me that so many people question the ending: the last line is as telling as it can get! great reaction as always, guys!
Also knowing everything at the end it’s a super fun re-watch all the cues to the reality of the island

to answer your question, yes. i was totally confused and the worst part of it was that when i decided to watch this movie, i already had a headache. i decided to watch it because i have seen recommendations of it from twitter and got so curious about the backstory of that part when leonardo went back home and finding her wife by the lake. and guess what? my headache got worse when i finished the movie because of all the confusion and questions running through my mind. but oh, how i would love to watch it again for the first time and get bombarded with excitement by the nuances and subtle hints that i barely noticed the first time and finally understood the next times i watched it. love your reaction as always and dont worry, i was just as confused as you all were.

I never realized he chose to be lobotomized at the end. He didn’t regress. It was simply the easier path. Which I guess is an intentional regression.

Thank you for reacting to one of my all-time personal favourite psychological horror drama films which is a rarity of Martin Scorsese to direct given his high profile for Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and recently Killers of the Flower Moon.
It took me 3 times to watch the film to see the signs that Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis (cool fictional character names) is not who we thought he is. At the end of the film, his last words “What could be much worse in this place: live as a monster or die as a good man” is an indicator that Laeddis opted out for the “lighthouse icepick” due to the fact he got to the point of no longer handling the trauma of killing his wife for killing his kids and not wanting to regress restarting the entire cutting-edge roleplay all over again.
As much as I know that it was all a roleplay: I loved the scene of Dr Rachel Solando in the cave, got a feeling it’s real (yet Dr Cawley brushed it off as fake hallucinations in Laeddis’ mind) as I could see this play a role in the plot of a continuation miniseries that I call “Escape From Shutter Island”.
No matter if he was thinking of something in the past that’s true or not - the US army liberation of Dachau (among the early Nazi campsites to appear in the Holocaust) resulted in the soldiers and surviving Holocaust prisoners participated in a revenge killing (execution squad-esque) on the camp guards except those who faced the music in the criminal courts. It did happen in our world.
An investigation conducted by US army Lieutenant-colonel Joseph Whittaker was suppressed by US army general George Patton and a Bavaria governor to cover up what Laeddis described as “not warfare but murder [on both sides]”. I do believe Laeddis’ involvement in the Dachau liberation and revenge killings was true.
y favourite line in this whole movie is "it was the smoke that got her, not the fire". Its only an important distinction when it comes to pain of death. Can't bear to accept she may have suffered that. It is a line that only exists develop teddy's character as a husband.
Oak seems a little too clued in for his first time watching haha. I suspect he caught more of the movie in hotels than he's letting on 😅 enjoyed the reaction though! One of my favourite films.

Shutter Island is such a great movie. The whole glass not being there and then there was just a mistake when filming. As far as I can tell, it wasn’t suppose to hint at anything.
This movie is so good! That last line gets me every time. Have you guys heard of The Count of Monte Cristo movie from the early 2000's?? I bet you'd love it.
Oh, you're better than I was. I was confused all the way up to the end reveal and explanation. I was convinced he was a real marshal and the entire island was diabolical, trying to vanish him by slowly gaslighting him into thinking he's been insane the whole time. 'Cause they slowly give him pills, force him to have to change out of his plainclothes into orderly's clothes, vanish his partner, then say, "Oop, turns out this guy's insane and he's in the perfect spot!", and the final stage would be to force him into having to dress in patients' clothes.
There's still tons of stuff that's kinda crazy. Like WHY would Dr. Cawley have a desk in the lighthouse, WITH a working telephone line? And power for lighting? It's the most impractical place to get to and from. He clearly doesn't see any patients there. The doctors don't hodl meetings there. It's the most impractical place to run a telephone line. Or power. Or keep those maintained. Where's the bathroom? His office serves no practical purpose being there, especially when the lighthouse holds no other visible operation. Like a guard said it was used for sewage treatment or something, but that would presumably require more specialized plumbing equipment and such. And why would it be separated from the main island itself, since then sewage lines need to run to and from it? Also, lobotomies don't seem to require a whole lotta specialized setup, mostly hand tools for performing the procedures. Seems like they'd be easily hidden, especially in such a large facility on a large island.
It was the anagram name thing that finally forced me to have to accept and concede he was Laeddis the whole time. That and Cawley not dying when he's shot. But Cawley's office setup at the end appears to exist solely to be the opposite of what Teddy (and us the audience) were expecting or imagining..
This movie's just fantastic to me an' I can never get enough of it.
Leo DiCaprio did an amazing job in Revenant. Best acting I've seen in a long time.
This is one of those movies that tricked me so perfectly that I refused to believe the truth when it was finally revealed.
Watch it again now you know the plot. It is so good with all the hints!

I thought early on that he must be a patient, but I just couldn't figure out why. I thought maybe he just couldn't get over his wife's death. The reveal at the end hit big. I find it hard to imagine a worse scene to try to overcome with any type of "normal" life. I want to watch it again and try to see all the clues that were given. It was a good catch, right off the bat, as to the way the guards greeted them at the dock. I could feel the relief from Diamond Dave, when he decided to just stop trying, after agonizing over the glass. 😊
