  • Badd Medicine here and its reaction time
A modern take on a whodunnit which was written, produced and directed by Rian Johnson.
Including an all star cast, the story begins under the premise that famous crime writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) has passed and after his passing, his family members are thrown together in Thrombey's home and questioned one by one by the Feds under the leadership of Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Toni Collet, Don Johnson and Ana De Armas keep the situational humor on task and on point. Knives Out is such a suitable and aptly chosen title as one would expect; when family of any kind get together, they do so with their backs against the wall, everyone has something to say about someone they don't like, everyone has something to hide, entangling themselves in a deeper web of secrets and lies, just like any other family. Also gotta say, Chris Evans just delivers in this as Ransom.
What follows from scene to scene is a clash of personas, dialogues and stories. Each act has been cleverly put together and just when you think you've heard it all and have figured it all out, out come the plot twists, littered with various other clues and red herrings. It's a one of a kind classically inspired murder mystery for the new generation of movie goers and it's well worth a watch to appreciate the way it all comes together.

It's a nice callback and all, but I always hate when people call it fantastic foreshadowing or something cause it was super obvious that that line was being used to set something up in the future. "He can't tell a prop knife from a real one" isn't a phrase or expression people say, so it was really clear it had a purpose beyond just calling Ransom foolish.

Some of my favorite details are Beniot noticing the blood on Marta's shoe when they first meet & doing a double-take,
The flashbacks showing Marta's foot not touching the windowsill but Ransom's _does_ scrape against it (leaving the mud behind)
And Ransom's mom remembering Ransom giving the nanna cake, but when someone else tells the story, Nanna _already has_ her slice of cake, showing Jaime Lee Curtis has a more favorable view of her son than he deserves

What I love about Rian Johnson’s storytelling in this is that not only did he expertly play with the tropes of the murder mystery genre, he also understands the ways this genre plays with class politics. The fact that the Thrombeys, despite being politically different, all suddenly turn on Marta the moment their money is threatened is such a perfect commentary on the rich and their general fakeness in “caring” about lower class/marginalized people and how ultimately the rich will always side with the rich when push comes to shove because of entitlement and privilege, regardless of political differences.

Hello, for me, I started with "The Mysterious Affair at Styles". as it was Agatha's first novel, and I couldn't stop from then. I went through the timeline of all the novels in which Hercule Poirot appeared, and then the novels in which Miss Marple and the rest of the investigators appeared, as a kind of accuracy!
I advise you to read (The Murder of Roger Ackroyd - Crime on the golf course - Murder on the Orient Express). Any one of them may be a good start, and of course there is "And Then There Were None" as it is considered one of her greatest novels. It may also be wonderful start for you.

The reason Blanc hits the piano key is because the interviews are heading into the weeds and that is his cue to the detectives to get back on track by asking specifically what time each family member arrived at the party.
Not sure if you recognized him but the family's lawyer Alan is played by the legendary Frank Oz. As a Dutchman, the expression "not a red dime" or "not a single red dime" interests me. I've never heard it before in English, and I think it might be a Neerlandism (Dutchism) the writers decided to use. What I love about this movie is how it twists the whodunnit genre. We usually follow the dective and one of the trappings of the genre is that the dective is always successfull in the end. But then we learn that Marta is the killer and we want her to succeed because shes the protagonist. So there is this tension between the inevitability of the detective figuring it all out and the protagonist winning in the end.

2 things i didnt see mentioned in the comments
First in the beginning i think it was Mason Quinn who called the family "vultures" when they were chasing after Marta in the beginning. That made me laugh because Benoit ends up calling them "vultures at the feast, knives out, beaks bloody" at the end lol
Second Joseph Gordon-Levitt was the voice on the show Marta's sister was watching in the beginning scene. I think Rian Johnson has him in all of his movies or something? So that was just a fun easter egg. Let's see if you can spot him in the 2nd one! (Along with another familiar face 👀)
Great watching you guys react! And i can't wait for y'all to react to Glass Onion!!

Those two movies will definitely blow your socks off. The story, characters, action and humor are top tier! Again, really recommend those :)

Definitely look up the 2 deleted scenes, they really add to the motivation of Jodi and Walt and it was a shame they were cut, Cinemawins has a great 2 part video that points out so many little hints and is worth a watch. And Glass Onion is AMAZING!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of those deals where he's in every movie Rian Johnson makes, but often hidden. In Star wars, he was an alien, in this one he was the detective on the TV show that Marta's sister was watching in the very beginning ("WE HAVE THE NANNY CAM"). And in the new one, he's also hidden cleverly

Just watched your guy's reaction to saltburnl.... decided to come here to watch your Knives Out reaction since you mentioned it in your saltburn reaction .
I love Knives out. I watced this in theaters four times. It was when I first signed up for the Regal Movie Pass to watch unlimited movies. Each viewing I picked up on something new. To this day I remember my reaction on the second viewing of when Daniel Craig knew that Marta had something to do with it. It's when he first sees her he looks down at her shoe and he pauses for a second and continues to talk to her. I was so blown away with just that little moment that nobody cares to pay attention to because it doesn't seem significant at all I actually have a CZcams upload of me reciting word for word Daniel Craig's monologue at the end of the movie

Regarding the baseball: Richard goes to get the letter from Harlon then grabs the ball off the desk and throws it outside. The dog picks up playing fetch. Then Linda finds it and returns it to her fathers desk where she finds Harlon's letter to her. If Richard didn't throw the baseball, Linda never would have found the letter.

You're beginning comment about not wanting to see Daniel, Craig and other things, reminded me of my reaction when I rewatched the movie Elizabeth, in it he plays a violent monk working to rid the Catholic church of her Protestant self, and I forgot how effing terrifying he is in that movie. And I had just got finished watching both of the knives out movies more recently than I had watched any of his other things. It was quite a shock, let me tell you, 😂😂😂

that Nod between Marta and Ransom at the end when he's being put into the police car gets me suspicious all the time. was the nod like a sign of respect , like when at the end of the game you aknowledge a good opponent, orrrrr was it like a nod at the end of a heist film , did Ransom and Marta go through with their plan from the restaurant where he said he can help her get away with it if she gives him his part of the inheritance, was the whole thing about him being the killer just a play from them or did Ransom and Marta plan the murder ahead of time to get the house and inherritance after he was cut off ?

The reason Harlan Thrombey gave his entire inheritance to Marta, and not to his entire dysfunctional family, is that she is very kind, caring, selfless, friendly, respectful, and humble towards him, something his entire family doesn't have and lacks within themselves.

Knives out, I just loved this film (movie) a classic who done it, with many twists & turns, in the plot, plus it had a great cast, also when i visited the states some years back (2017) I went with family to see the film LOGAN LUCKY, which in my humble opinion was absolutely brilliant, it also starred Daniel Craig, along with Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Hilary Swank and Seth McFarlane, it may well be worth giving it a look.
