My favorite "clue" in this movie that's easily missed: when the woman who axe-murdered her husband asks for a glass of water, when it's brought to her and she drinks it, for a moment the glass and the water are invisible - her hand seems to be empty when she brings it up to her mouth and drinks. This moment is hinting at Teddy/Andrew's aversion to water (because of his children drowning) and his mind is literally removing the glass of water from his vision. It's also a big indicator that we're only seeing what Teddy/Andrew is seeing, and it's not always true or reliable.

I just love the fact that the clothes he wears are big on him, because they don't have his size in civilian clothing. Everyone else's clothes fit them, his are large and baggy. Another clue is the Guards are on edge of him and during the search for Rachel they're all just sitting around because they know Rachel doesn't exist. Yet ANOTHER clue is when they're doing the interviews. Every patient has a guard behind them... the only person who is not being guarded is Chuck (the Doc)

She told him before she felt like something was wrong. So he moved then to the house by the lake. In the end, everything just became to much. He's already dealing with his own mental health because of the war, but then adding the tragedy of his wife and kids was too much to deal with, so he'll rather get 'fixed' to forget then live with the memories.

My grandmother was schizophrenic and for years she thought my grandfather, her ex-husband, was trying to kill her. My parents kept an eye on her and made sure she took her medication so I was guarded from it a lot. Only once did I ever see her in a bad state when she accused me of trying to kill her too while crying. It was shocking because I was 16 at the time and never truly believed my parents when they said she was sick. I laughed at first because I found it so absurd when she accused me but then quickly realized she was serious and reassured her that I would never hurt her and loved her. The cabin by the pond where the climax of the story takes place was filmed at Borderland State Park in Massachusetts. I've been inside that cabin many times. it's just an empty shell with a fireplace for bikers and hikers to get out of the rain, but the filmmakers did a nice job making it looked furnished and lived in.

One of the greatest twist endings ever and is so rewarding on the second watch because you're able to catch all the little signs that something isnt quite right. Also the ending is so crazy to me. He didn't circle back to the routine of thinking he's a detective who needs to "get to the mainland". He's well aware and would rather die being in control, than to lose himself again.

The bigger twist that no one has ever noticed is that they are actually creating mind controlled soldiers. There are two light houses on the island, if you put them side by side the one at the beginning and the one at the end they are not the same. Rachel is also real but it’s longer to explain (water and fire have deeper meanings in this movie)

Excellent choice. Definitely worth looking into the other Leo/Martin collaborations: Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed and The Wolf of Wall Street. The Revenant is another prime thing to do a reaction with. Scorsese didn't direct that, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu did. But Leo finally won the coveted gold statue for his lead acting for that. After five prior nominations, by the way.
Here's some trivia knowledge for anyone reading: 1994 Supporting Actor What's Eating Gilbert Grape, 2005 Lead Actor The Aviator, 2007 Lead Actor Blood Diamond, 2014 Lead Actor The Wolf of Wall Street and 2014 Best Picture as a Producer of The Wolf of Wall Street. He later got another nom for 2020 Lead Actor Once Upon a Time In... Hollywood.

One of my top 10, i can watch it over and over. What a performance from Leo - this came out the same year as Inception. If you think about it he is playing the same person in both movies. A man traumatized by the death of his wife unable to tell reality from fantasy and in the end he makes a choice.

This movie reminds me a little of "Identity". It's a mind-blowing "who-done-it" murder mystery psychological thriller that will leave you guessing who the killer is until the very end. There are so many twists and turns. The movie stars John Cusack, Ray Liotta, Amanda Peet, John C McGinley, Jake Busey, etc. A great movie to watch on or off the camera.

My takeaway is that Leo's character, in the end, is clear in the head, knowing full well that he'll eventually will revert back to his "false" self, and being so tired of the whole spiel, plays along as "false" self, so he'd be put to an end, mercy as he sees it.

Yall are awesome!! Love y’all’s videos. I have been watching for a long time but i don’t comment much. That conversation between the amazing Ted Levine, aka the Warden, and Leo in the Jeep after the Warden picks him up to take him back to the facility has stuck with me since i watched this movie for the first time on opening weekend in theatre. I have never forgotten it and to this day it is a top five, possibly top three movie dialogue/conversation moments from any movie i have seen and thats a lot. The “God loves violence” conversation. I love anonymity in a movie. When they leave it to you to decide. To put everything together and formulate a hypothesis. In the vein of your The Thing 1982’s and Blade Runner 1982’s. This movie also does this masterfully.

It's so tragic because despite how dangerous he is, the staff really is trying to help him. And then the end where he realizes he'd rather leave this world as the man he wanted to be and not what he turned into.
It's crazy how many hints are dropped at what's actually going on when you rewatch it.

I'm just gonna throw this tidbit in here: the music in episode 3 of Last of Us where Bill and Frank pass, is used in this. This movie at the end of this film comprised it with an old song by Dinah Washington called "This Bitter Earth." With this score and that song, it's one of the most heartbreaking pieces of music I've ever heard and the lyrics work so well with this movie and Last of Us that it made question if Last of Us took the inspiration from this film to use in Bill and Frank's story
