- The legendary Carcass releases their first new album in 8 years, 'Torn Arteries', on 17th September via Nuclear Blast. The release presented an opportunity to chat with Bill about the album and dive into subjects relating to his superb career as one of the most influential guitarists in extreme metal. I chatted with bassist/ vocalist Jeff Walker before Bill and asked if he thought carcass had been a key inspiration for the 'Gothenburg' sound. You'll hear Bill's take on the subject and much, much more.

Is Bill married or single? What hobbies does he have? And other interesting questions. Unfortunately, fans don't know anything about his (and Jeff's) personal life. I only know that Ken was once married many years ago but now is divorced.
Met Bill & Jeff after a show in Melbourne on the Surgical tour....proper gentlemen and salt of the earth kinda guys....huge respect for this band 🤘

I saw carcass at Wolverhampton civic hall supporting Body count back in the 90's they were brilliant as were body count but musicianship of carcass was quite jaw dropping. I still refer to that gig as Body Carcass or Carcass Count.
I remember an interview with one of the atg twins who was talking about how he liked necroticism a lot
I had Necroticism before Heartwork, and even found the definitions to most of the lyrics in the back of a cool dictionary which had medical definitions and even a full musical dictionary at the back. For Necroticism you will need both of those and a degree in Classic English literature. Fucking genius. The grooves were all there, and the surprises were too. Then Heartwork. My take is that Heartwork was and is such a masterpiece, it almost ruined metal. No one could even begin to compete. Indeed no one has touched it since besides Carcass themselves with Steel. The fucking EP for that has Zochrot and Livestock Marketplace which are so incredible that you wonder how they ended up as “extras”. Same with Despicable having songs like Slaughtered in Soho, a gargantuan masterpiece song which to me evokes Beethoven AND Bach yet it’s Carcass through and through, with tongue in cheek lyrics only Jeff could write. But I’m a live sound engineer and have been since 1995. I’ve mixed At the Gates and the lot. You name it, I’ve made them smile on stage with my blistering mix, where no note is lost, and I cower under the console from the sheer volume of the guitar lead I’m cutting everyone’s head off with while they do the magic. In other words I’m a lover of heavy as fuck as normal, whether it’s dub reggae, bad brains, Mr. Bungle, or Napalm Death, Harmony Corruption being my fave. Fuck me. Anyway. ,y take is that real deal musicians truly appreciate Carcass, but can’t stand Carcass because they’ll make you feel like you don’t have a snowballs chance in a Carcass album of remotely approaching their level of proficiency. It takes a master artist to convey what’s in their mind onto their media. If Heartwork was a lucky fluke of creative genius blown in one unrepeatable wad, Swan Song had a couple of greats, the EP that followed also some greats, Rot-N-Roll, etc, but if there was any doubt that Heartwork was a fluke or not, Surgical Steel roved it was NOT. Another masterpiece. Nothing can beat Heartwork, but of Heartwork didn’t exist, Surgical Steel would have had the same effect, sadly, to make a bunch of metal bands just quit. That’s how far above it all Carcass is. I’ve witnessed this firsthand. Some of my best friends are seasoned and accomplished musicians of every genre, and bands like Gojira and Carcass just make them frustrated. Who can touch that shit? There’s Carcass, and everyone else, genre be damned. Of course I worship Sabbath, Zeppelin, and also Cathedral, and even old Entombed is right there. Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel are like metal with a plaque that says “Good Game-You Participated”. Exhorder makes them all look dumb as far as domestic stuff, and Pantera should start every show declaring how they wouldn’t know what groove metal was without Exhorder. A fact. But listen to Arbeit Macht Fleisch, now THATS a groove. Carcass man. Carcass. Sorry. But the rest are just trying. Jeff Walker will tell it straight. He knows. He knows they all spent from 1993-2013 trying to figure out Heartwork and then they dropped Steel just to remind them all of who was king. Hah!
I'm not an aficionado or expert at all. All I know is that I'm grateful to Carcass for making great music.

I'm sorry to say that your info on Carcass heavily influencing Gothenburg DM is very poor.
1. The first melodic DM record is Spiritual Healing from 1990
2. They expressed that their influence was to combine Iron Maiden with DM.
3. You forget the originators being ridiculed back then for this: Eucharist. They were the first with their demo.

I fully agree that especially on Heartwork the Maiden gallup is present and accounted for. I’ve always felt like Caracas’s was like Maiden with a blistering pace and without the Dungeons and Dragons vibes. With Maiden, well, it’s fucking Maiden and god shall strike those who blaspheme as such. But Carcass. Nothing can touch them. I’ll elaborate above

We all have our opinions, but inclined to revoke your entitlement on that one brother. Behave for a short eternity and you’ll reclaim your place setting at the human opinion pentagonal table.
