  • President Idi Amin ruled Uganda between 1971 and 1979 during what historians referred to as the reign of terror.
So how did Idi Amin, with a deprived childhood, become president? Was it luck, was it his ruthless streak or was there a deeper conspiracy orchestrated by Israel and Britain against Obote?

I stayed with a Buganda family near Jinja, Uganda in 1976-77. While it's true that the shop shelves were infrequently stocked and some staples were unavailable, no one went hungry under Amin's regime and the Ugandans were always kind and welcoming. I saw the Public Safety Unit vehicles on the Jinja road yet never was harassed in any way. Just sayin'

Edward Kibirige What do Baganda look like ? I have seen some Baganda who are darker than some acholi. They are an ambiguous tribe with no specific physical features.
