- We joined Lydia Hallie, also known as The Avocoder on Instagram, as she began her latest remote adventure in San Francisco. We chatted about a couple of things, including her journey into programming, whether or not computer science degrees are all that necessary and the realisation that maybe what she’s looking for in different locations is rather within herself.
You can find her making free tutorials on her website, writing her thoughts on her blog and quizzing her followers on Instagram in between sharing honest insights about her life.

I enjoyed her talk on prisma day when she went through testing
Nice! Lydia’s story is inspiring for aspiring remote software developers.
I love your content it’s so inspiring! Great video 💪🏾
Thanks for these documentaries and dev stories. I'm a software engineer from Brazil in the early career. I watch videos like this to learning English and get inspiration, because I wanna travel the world working remotely like Lydia, her history is amazing!
Nice job Honeypot! Lydia’s story is inspiring. I’m a software engineer, and I’m forcing my daughter to watch this so she won’t think it’s boring. 🤣
Forcing someone do something is totally not making it boring and annoying to them 👍
Lool
my parents forced me into coding, which made me run away and never look at programming. Took me 10 years to overcome it and get back into it
This was great Lydia!!
This is BY FAR the best one yet 🥳 your documentaries are amazing!
Agreed, they really killed it with this one 😎
Did you just make a comment and then reply to yourself? 😂 Outstanding move!
PS thanks for the love!
I Agree!
Niceeee... We need more like these
It is so cool !! You motivate me so much )
these are soooo well crafted!
Dream life! Travel + Code ❤️
i have been there its not the answer :P
@@0877adri idk why but I believe you
@The NewGeneration to a happy life.
Like jim carrey once said " i wish everybody would be rich, so they see its not the answer "
@@0877adri It's the answer for people who love to travel though.
@@nielslouwes7695 I love traveling, but now I started to value a cozy home a lot, especially also to have constant people around you.
This lady rocks ! I'm not only a computer science graduate from UCD, but I also love hardware and Windows operating systems for PCs. So I am both a software engineer as well as a hardware IT guy who loves helping people upgrade their HDD to an SSD drive and upgrade RAM, Video Cards, etc...
I completely agree with this young lady about passion and desire being the most important factors to becoming a great and creative programmer. I would only add a small caveat which was not really emphasized... And that is... As a programmer, one needs to have a few luxuries set aside, to make things happen
1) Make sure you have plenty of time, and that this time is without distraction. Learning a programming language has a steep learning curve in order to learn all the concepts... And even afterwards, one spends a lot of "alone" time... So it's definitely a solitary kind of hobby (for the most part) and that may not be for everyone. It helps to be young and passionate.
2) Make sure you take frequent breaks and have a great "supportive" (ergonomic) chair. Once you get absorbed into coding... It's like a black hole that sucks you in... And you spend incredible amounts of time on your passion. So have a great chair and desk setup... But also get plenty of exercise and breaks. Your health is the most important thing in life. Sitting behind a chair for extensive hours a day (looking at multiple monitors) and exerting all that force on your arms, shoulders, back and neck will definitely take its toll.
Take it from me... I got carried away on my Android product on Google Play Store
(called EZ Notes), and I lost my lower back! Now I can hardly sit behind a chair anymore without excruciating pain, and I also suffer a lot of arthritic pain in my arms, and body.
I started coding "EZ Notes" when I was 36... And worked on it until the age of 45 ! (which is where I am at today).
3) Make sure you plan out and think about what kinds of financial returns you can expect from your dream product. Making money is never easy...especially as a solo developer. This was something that I feel was not stressed at all in this awesome video by this awesome lady. I share this tip because after 8 years of working on my Android App, I was left with a broken back, and I am making no money from 8 years of tough work. And I want to help those of you who are thinking of spending a huge amount of time... To really be careful and not hurt yourselves physically, financially, and emotionally.
If you enjoyed these wisdoms and experiences that I shared to help you, I would greatly appreciate your support of my App on Google Play Store. Helps me a lot!

Thanks! Very motivating video. For the last two years I have changed three locations. It is starting to bore me, so I'm looking for a place I want to stop 😋
your codes look formatted and disciplined. Good for you.
great video! any chance to get a list of the music used in the video?
As a software engineer too, her life is my dream.
You really believe what you see in these videos? This is not what a software engineer does. She probably gets paid by this company to promote them
Damn I’m in love with your channel it really help to keep going for be a programmer, thanks 4 this. You should do one of a Mexican or Latin person! Maybe me in a few years 👀
Yea being able to travel as a software engineer is awesome, would never trade it back for an office job :)
Really Awesome Video
Amazing.
lol at "No Letting Go" playing in the background at 7:09
Fire
how do you build your websites. i meant stack, hosting etc
What camera do you guys use???
Sony a7rii
You should have asked for the lens instead of the camera
Any suggestions for a person (me) who wants to start his career in coding life? Please help.
I love u Lydia ❤❤❤
Is she a digital Nomad then? How is she able to do that?
Need one with Jeffery Way from Laracasts!
Why the website link is not working?
I also work remote and i love it
even me too
I have firm desire to learn programming and programming languages
for doing work like full stack developer as Remote or freelancer.
Its my dream and wish to work and keep learn more in software field.
You can’t beat a beautiful mind
Love it
Not sure what she said, but she reminded me of Marsha Brady. I love Marsha Brady.
Cool!!
yes coding was fun but I worked my 2 years in software industry and The corporate culture kind of ruined me .
They increased my stress level and with the ordinary blame game stuff gets very much problematic.
I left it and now applying for school teacher job.
Yeaaa... 55% true but the thing is you have to give yourself time for funny is you are a software engineer.... and now with working remotely its now very possible unlike when we used to go to office where working hours were too rigid...
how she speaks sooooooo good? I mean, she's from netherlands...
Honeypot, may I know if the process of hiring Global Talent ?
We have tons of global talents on our platform! Pop over to honeypot.io and create a profile - the team over there will be able to help you with all your specific questions 🙏
motivator 👍✌🏻
love what you do xD
"once you got that skill you can build anything you want" ... well, how long does it take? 10 years of straight coding?
Anything is not practical i guess building solo
One year of dedicated practice.
She is what they call an 'anywhere' right?
Can you do one with Wes Bos?
Yeah, we are currently talking with Wes Bos about making a mini-doc with him. Stay tuned!
Funny, I think wow, she is cool I will click on her twitter and follow her. I already was :D
Shez a ⭐
I am a remote developer but all I do is sleep
Yay, a familiar face!
The question is without a university degree and being ' inspiring' does she make any money? Yeah I know money isn't everything but that not my question.
Who watch this in 2020?
Where remote jobs are no longer special anymore
🌞👍💛
i love her i started with your blog then you ig post am a 20 yr old guy from silicon savanah working on my startup launching in a few days. you were such an inspiration. btw guys check it out in a few weeks its roko.store
so sick of these instagram techies with their shitty stickers on their macs
Instead of partying, she's coding...cool. 😊
🤦 computer science degrees teach much more than just programming. If you just want to program, don't go to college.
got a licence degree in computer science but drop this year for many reason. But i can say that i'm a better programer by taughing myself but as you said College teach me a lot about Network, Computer Architecture and Data Structure.
She needs a better desk lol
You are so freaking cute!
The shitty stickers should stop
ahah funny video has nothing to do with the work of a software engineer
Constant travel is a waste of money. I get it if you have money to just blow...then again many digital nomads come from well off backgrounds.
Such a beautiful bullshit!
FEMINIST STEALING A MANS JOB?
Folks, please don't feed the trolls.
