- The band ZZ Top is marking 50 years together, with a new remastered collection of their greatest hits, "Goin' 50." Jim Axlerod talks with guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard (the one without a beard) who are still working hard to make their pedal-to-the-metal, bluesy country rock seem so easy.

RIP Dusty. Your art will be remembered forever.
I'm gonna miss him. You couldn't pick a better bassist for a rock trio like ZZ Top
My first concert!!! Rest in Peace Dusty, we'll miss the magic. 💔😢
You will be missed for miss for sure 😊❤️😚💯💙❤️💚💜🙏🏼👍🏻😎 😎😎🌷🌮🎈💔🌞🧡❣️💗💜💚❤️💙💯

WORD from the Tex-Mex Community
Who is coming back to this video for the 2nd or 3rd time in the last couple years? RIP Dusty Hill.
There's cool and then there's ZZ Top. R.I.P Dusty Hill 😥
This band are so well respected down here in New Zealand. I remember seeing them in 86 with 67,000 other people in a stadium down here......May sound average by US standards but in a country of only 4.5 mill back then , That is a some following.
@@432htz3 ZZ Top actually could not sell 67k seats here in the US. Pretty big following in NZ
@@stanleymasterson1135 Yeah big following back then especially after the Eliminator album came out. They played at a speedway stadium at Western Springs in Auckland. I just went and Googled it and apparently the number was actually close to 80 k and it was in 87 not 86. { My memory isnt like it used to be =) } It was the only gig in NZ so people would have come from throughout the country to see them so that might be a the reason why they got so many. The concert was so loud that they were banned from playing there ever again because of the amount of noise complaints from nearby suburbs...Legendary .
@@stanleymasterson1135 I don't know about that saw them at the Capital Center on the Recycler tour not what it held but it was packed and that by far was the best concert I have ever seen RIP Dusty Hill
I like that statement🤣
If this band can’t be considered family after their experiences, then there’s no such thing as family. God bless you, Dusty. R.I.P.
Do you know if they are related or not
@Kaleb Rodgers no, they’re not blood-related, but all of them being in a band together for over fifty years figuratively makes them family
Okay thank you for the comment
Brothers man , could not be anything else, Dusty has hot rodded to the skies, but they always be brothers in music.
RIP Dusty Hill, forever in our hearts and our guitars.
"There is no other drummer". I like them even more now.
So do I Filip
I've been a fan for 40 years and after hearing that from Billy, I like them even more.
When I was learning to play drums I was all over the place and I wanted the KISS drumriser that raised up and shot fire and I wanted to spin around in a drum cage like Tommy Lee and my dad would say....”Be more like Frank Beard” I didnt get it as a kid.....he’s gone and I get it now and I wish he could have seen that I finally got it lol
Really impressed with the loyalty!
There’s one guy
My girlfriend and i went to two concerts of zz top in 79 and 84. We got married in 83. I ve been married to her for 45 years. We listen to them everyday. Our 4 sons were raised with zz top playing. Keep on truckin Dusty. Its been great. Frank, Billy, thank you
So many memories associated with ZZ Top's music. Dusty, you will be missed, but live on forever.
ZZ Top has endured because of their loyalty (friendship) to each other. They love what they do. This band is an American treasure.
That's what I was thinking "Loyalty" . The pride of America.
Joe DeCesere. Amen, bruh!
"Just get another drummer." "There IS no other drummer."
It's called chemistry, and loyalty.
Reminds me of RUSH
"There is no other drummer" - my heart melt.
That kind of loyalty is rare.
zz top without frank beard is like rush without neil peart.not gonna happen.
Talk about loyalty. I must say, in today's world, they trough you under the bus, for a few dollars more. Just awesome all around.
@@kennethsmith8968 Or Led Zeppelin without Bonzo.
@@isaidwtfover That is true. However I think Bonzo's son Jason does a good job behind the sticks.
He was a cool dude I'm 56 remember listing to them as a young kid
Who doesn’t stop whatever they’re doing when La Grange is playing anytime, anyplace
RIP Dusty Hill, rough boy forever
The sound that comes out of just three guys is incredible.
God speed Dusty. Gone but will never be forgotten
RIP Dusty. I grew up with you. ZZ Top are icons.
"There is no other drummer" now that mindset is why they are still going strong.
Now, just one month after this post, would they even think about finding another bass player? Maybe - if they have some long time friends who play and who would be suitable to step in.
@@GomerfromIsaan and Dusty had the good sense too tap his replacement before he said adios amigos!!!! So fitting too see the tour continue and a new album with Dustys lyrics coming up also a fitting tribute with the hat on the mic stand remembering him during their tour!!! FANDANGO GUYS!!!! As Billy always says HAVE MERCY!!!!! ZZ TOP keeps rolling on!!!! RIP DUSTY HILL🤩🤩🤩🤩
@@barbarawells6845 That's good to know. Maybe they saw it coming.
Frank was my little league baseball coach, has a ranch outside the neighborhood I grew up, he is a fantastic guy and was as generous as could be. They say when they need to calibrate a metronome, they use a Frank Beard to do so.
A journalist asked Billy Gibbons in a recent interview if he could explain the longevity of his band ZZ Top.
His response, "Never learn the fourth chord."
good one
Liberal rats make good...
@@sandman93449dm No need to make it political mate.
They are class act to see live
Haha
I may be mistaken, but I think ZZ Top holds the distinction of being the longest lived band with all original members. No replacements.
U2 has 42 yrs. with all original members.
They can never be replaced....
But didn't Billy Gibbons have his hip replaced ? Therefore the band is NOT totally the original members.
dusty hill had his hip replaced , he also shot himself in the foot with a derringer accidently @@johnny5805
@@johnny5805 Yeah, his moves and Texas hip shake isn't the same. Lol!!!
That is great that they were all committed to each other which really helped with their longevity.... RIP Dusty
I'm a grown man bursting into tears...
" I had a new car when we started, it's a vintage car now"..... ZZTOP is a great band with a great sense of humor, gotta love them!
RIP DUSTY I’m absolutely saddened
Super bunch of guys, down to earth, and friendly. Met them on the highway coming into Omaha during their antenna tour. Drank some beers with them, gave them a Harley escort into the civic center. They gave us all access back stage passes and had their security watch our bikes during the show. Billy asked to sit on my bike to check it out, a rigid pan head painted silver with black flames. I said sure of course. One of the best summers of my life. ZZ Top rocks. A big thank you to Billy, Dusty, and Frank.
Awesome!!
Wow , the best story !!!
Saw them a handful of times in the 70s/80s. A lot of bands pranced around like rock stars. ZZ Top delivered the goods....everytime!
One of the greatest American Rock-n-Roll bands in the history of the world.
Dam right!
You are so right byron
… in the history of the Universe! :O
Hey dumb dumb, didn't you watch the video? We're talking " rock band" here, not mother theresa!
Bryon Kidder YUP
That little old band from Texas. Congrats on 50! Amazing
50th like for 50 years of ZZ Top!!
Zz. Still. Number one with me
See y'all in Phoenix....can hardly wait!!
Yippeedodaryippiddyday!! Oh yeah!
I was 17 in 1975 first time I saw them. Now in 2020 I've had the same beard I marvelled at back then going on 5 yrs. People even call me zz top these days because of it and I just laugh and say yeah uh huh that's right y'all.
'We will miss you Dusty'
Thanks for all the many years of your voice and your licks!'
I am 62 but when I listen to ZZ Top I am 20 again. Makes my wife nervous.
Smoked many bong hits listening to them three Texans in my home town of Dallas Texas in the early 70's and still love them , have mercy cause I just got paid today and Jesus is just leaving Chicago and he's headed for New Orleans and I have been waiting for that damn bus all day .
ZZ Top, Pantera, Selena, and Texas NEVER gets old. Seriously. Thank God for these muscians.
and the GOAT SRV
And Willie Nelson
I’m 54 and I still CRANK ZZ Top.
ZZ Top is so underated. 50 years and they still rock!! Huge part of my childhood🤘
Underrated? They're one of the greatest of all time....
Thanks Dusty for rocking until the end! You were the man! Thanks for all the years of hard work and rock and roll. You were for certain a master of your craft. You are missed so much! May you rest in peace because you’ve earned it!
My first concert! 30 years later I'm still a die hard fan. 😊 would gladly see them again. And again.
Unlike a lot of rock stars, these guys actually love each other! That's why they've been together for 50 years, and they just make me smile and smile! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Two guitars and a set of drums. Priceless
REAL Music!
There's only one guitarist in ZZ Top.
bmjv77 - Right. The word "guitar", by definition, means "SIX stringed instrument".
Tom Taylor as if additional instruments would render it FAKE music???
bmjv77 basses are guitars
I just saw them perform in Atlanta on 10/13/19 with Cheap Trick for their 50th Anniversary Tour! We rocked hard all night and I went home feeling musically high!!!!
Like losing that favorite uncle you think will be around forever. Rip #dustyhill
The most rockin' band ever southern rock is ZZ top rest in peace Dusty. 💗
Rest in Peace Dusty Hill your music will live on.
"so Frank is in Re-Hab, what are you going to do?"
"I'm going fishing." Now that is loyalty right there!
I met Billy at a gas station in Bacliff, Texas. He got out of that 1934 coupe. Just a normal nice guy.
Dusty Hill was a most excellent musician, the Little Band from Texas even inspired Wyld Stallyns. Rock on dude!
I'm not American, and I generally don't like American music, but I adore these guys.
I think it is the simplicity that makes their music drive.
It's basic twelve bar blues, and that's the heart of modern pop/rock, and these dudes have boiled it down to its pure essence.
I expect to hear them rocking 50 years from now.
Best wishes from England.
We still have great talent here in America , Blackberry Smoke, Whiskey Myers and Rival Sons to only name a few and with that being said England’s 🏴 very own, The Temperance Movement is all so one of my favorite bands!
Are you sure you're not American? Dude
@@tearitloosetearitloose4670 Oh, quite sure, thanks.
Zed Zed Top
They are just great down to earth guys who never got caught up in their fame and never took themselves seriously.
RIP Dusty, many of us grew up, and grew old with you. But unlike us, you will live on for a very long time. May you voice, and music continue sir.
RIP dusty, been a fan since early teens HUGE loss in the music world, lots of love to his family friends and band mates, love from new zealand
Wow they're loyalty to each other is amazing.

BAAHAAA! Great point my friend! Like the T-shirt says, We may be old but We got to see the Good bands! :)
They have been together 50 years and their legacy will live on for 500 years after they’re gone. One of the most influential southern rock bands in history right there folks, it don’t get no better than that little ol band form Texas!!!
Good memories of Top in the 80's as a teenager..you will be missed.
I cant believe hes gone... when i was 10 we went to a zz top concert and had back stage passes...... ill never forget it...went with my dad . He passed way at 48 in 07.. rest in peace and live forever dusty😎🤘
I had the pleasure of meeting Billy Gibbons on West 4 street in Manhattan coming out of a Kentucky fried chicken. He was asking directions to St. Marks place. At first, I thought he was a celebrity impersonator and even grabbed him by the shoulder . When I realized it was him and started singing his songs, he reached in his pocket, grabbed a piece of paper and even gave me an autograph without me asking for it.... real classy guy...!!!
Real fans don’t bootleg artists music, they buy the albums...!!!
There is no other band I’ve seen more live than ZZ Top . Congratulations on 50 years that’s incredible .
I remember seeing them on the Recycler tour they had a lot of stuff happening on that stage you thought about it for days
@David Signor I remember that. Frank’s drum riser was the tail end of a flat bed trailer. And the claw constantly picking up various part from the junkyard… and of course, the “laborers” picking up junk during “Legs”. Quite a sight.
@@Mark-sj3xb yes I would have liked to see that 2 or 3 more times alot to comprehend at 1 show

One of the greatest bands in the world much loved by all real music fans. I miss the 80s with ZZ Top and Robert Palmer.

They were legends when I was in high school. I am retired now, it does not seem real how much time as passed but I can only be sad for a while, so much music to remember and like a lot of young people, so much crazy times that went along with the music that pops back in your memory when you hear an old song.
R.I.P. Dusty.
ZZ top are nearly as old as my grandparents but they rock and live harder than any other rocker around. Long live ZZ top.🤘🤙🤟❤️
I've loved this band for decades!!! It all started for me when I completely wore out three 8 - tracks & 2 cassettes of Fandango ; you can believe it folks, this is the working man's rock band for all seasons!!!
