Why the Sony A6700 will most likely OVERHEAT badly...

  • The Sony A6700 will most likely have some major overheating issues when used in a normal scenario. Many reviewers only tested the camera in airconditioned studio environment and low framerates.
Without overheating, this might have been the almost perfect camera for content creators.

I just would like to mention that overheating DOES NOT EXCLUSIVELY occur when shooting for long periods in warm environments, e.g. 15min clip in 4k60 in sunlight! "Nobody does that"??? Correct! Barely anybody will shoot 15min 4k60 clips. However, most people are out and about shooting shorter clips with breaks in between for hours.

For the past few weeks, the temperature in Miyagi where I am has been around 30c. Right now in Tokyo, the temp is listed as 34c. And the humidity there has got to be killer. Because of electricity costs, I haven't been using the air conditioner in my studio, so when I shoot, the sweat just drips off me. It is nice to see you also in a sweaty, real world situation. I wish we could get some 30c - 34c camera overheating tests. I don't know. I haven't looked. Maybe, they are out there.

Super disappointed I didn't see your review until now. I had watched the same three reviews you showcased in this video at the beginning and was sold on this camera. I bought this camera a few weeks ago and have not been able to successfully use it for a full recording of any of my content yet. I even dropped the settings down to 1080 and had it overheat, and shutdown after 45-50 minutes. I was able to edit out the areas during my podcast recording where this had shut down, but needless to say very disappointed. Had I seen your review, I would have kept looking for another camera option. I've also seen other reviews out there that are claiming the latest firmware update fixed all the over heating issues, I can assure you that is also not the case. Thanks for getting this video out there. You gained a like and a subscriber! Cheers.

It's 38c here in UAE. Imagine I wanted to shoot something at noon in Dubai :D. It won't overheat, It'll melt. Sony is going full canon for the last 2 years. That's very very clear with the ZV-1 Mark 2 release. Cripple hammer is with Sony now

The FX30 does not have AIAF. The 6700 does. AIAF works even with full pixel super resolution zoom and can recognize subjects. This is not possible with the FX30. The 6700 also has a viewfinder. For these reasons, I chose the 6700. The cooling problem was solved by using the Fotopro CR-02. Due to the fan noise, I had to record the audio separately. Tested at an environmental temperature of 26°C. With the CR-02 attached, you can shoot 4k60p unlimitedly. You can shoot 4k120p for more than 40 minutes.

Had to subscribe because of addressing my exact suspicions/issues about this camera. Studied 3 years electronics engineering and one undisputed, generally valid fact is that: HEAT KILLS ELECTRONICS -> in fact heat is the MAIN reason all electronics eventually fail. In this hot climate fans should be a must in order to ensure long term reliability. Leaving reliability aside, shooting a wedding scene outside and having to stop for 10 minutes in order to continue for 10 more minutes and then stop again is totally unacceptable.
They need to get the basics of electronics engineering right.
P.S. I used to overclock my computers for extra performance, but past 10 years I instead de-clock and under volt them for extra reliability. Never had a hardware failure since!!!

I just got an a6700 today and I got around 9 minutes of 4k 60 footage before it got hit with overheating. These were in normal temp modes with the screen on. I am going to experiment with turning off bluetooth and wifi and upping the temp limits to see if this helps but if I can't get a reliable shoot I will be returning this to B&H unfortunately.

Great video, and I like your critical thinking.
Although I have to say, as I live in Canada, the temperature those CZcamsrs did the test with totally applies. Because from where I live, the temperature won’t go above 23°C in the mornings nor in the evenings, which is usually the time I go out to shoot. And during the daytime the light is generally so hard on the face that I would avoid taking photos.
I think we need to take this topic with a grain of salt, as “your mileage may vary” based on your location. It applies to Tesla, and it will definitely apply to cameras as well.

So I have ran multiple overheating tests since I got my 6700. In temps 75 and below i have had no overheating in 4k24 and 4k60. 4k120 I got 20ish minutes.
Outdoors here in Georgia(southeast USA) 90°f 70% humidity 4k24 got 37 minutes before overheating.
    4k60 I got 28 minutes constant record.
Have not tried 4k120 outdoors yet.
I have preordered the Ulanzi cooling fan and going to test the cooling effect once it arrives.

Pre-ordered - to be honest.. who really needs to shoot at 60fps (w the screen closed) for durations greater than 10min without stopping? I do shoot weddings but this will not be my primary body - seems to be able to handle 24fps just fine. Great for a second or third angle?

    • @potatophil8432
      @potatophil8432  Před 11 měsíci

For most people that is more than adequate nobody’s gonna shoot in direct sun by leaving on a tripod in direct sun for 2 hours. If a person wants to film video indirect sunlight for hours, they’re gonna have to choose one with a fan but 99.9% of people are going to use it for that... I’m not saying it is a perfect camera. I think it should be $200 less than it is but overheating is not an issue according to most reviewer’s

I don't think we should expect this compact hybrid camera to shoot 4k60, and especially 4k120, for a long period of time. I think you're asking for a lot. Cameras that can handle these temps are pretty much all bigger body cameras. I mean...Sony has some of the smallest body cameras in the market right now. I can't think of any camera in this price range , with these features, this size.
Now I am disappointed with the 4k/24p, but my indoor test show over an hour of record time with an external monitor hooked up. Probably around 73-75 degrees. Personally, that's enough for me.
Personally, my issue is that I can't livestream with the camera without it overheating. Using USB-C livestream 4k30p, it overheats after 20 minutes. Others say they have no issue with theirs so maybe I have a bad unit. But still...disappointed.

It's a small camera not intended for professional use. Makes a great Holiday or Vacation camera which I would use it for. If you intend to use it to create professional results, it's close but I would go with the fx30 if you need an aps-c format.

@@potatophil8432 Very accurate, but it depends on your shooting habits. If I shoot a video once in a while and stills, it should be fine. If on the other hand, you shoot mostly video of motion subject matter, then get the FX30, it will keep on going and it can shoot stills, with an electronic shutter.

Sony is an ok still camera but a terrible video camera. It works for about 20 to 30 minutes in real life shooting scenarios. I think you pay too much for the return on investment. I come from an Arri film background and I am used to focusing a lens quickly and setting up a camera properly. I do like Sony cameras but cannot use them for video professionally. Tried using one on a professional industrial shoot during the winter in a warehouse shoot and finally just threw it in the bag in frustration and embarrassment in front of the client. Went back to the Black Magic Ursa. Focusing and proper exposure is part of the fun of film making. If you know what you're doing all the hand holding the Sony cameras do will never make you good at the craft. Sony cameras are great for You tubers and such but not good for mid to high end shooting scenarios.
I can shoot just as fast, no bullshit menus, hit the focus with my eyes, no bullshit overheating. Unless you're shooting a feature and the production requires 16 bit color, 32 bit audio you can't do better than Black Magic for a bang for the buck. Higher end is all Alexa and still some film.
Advice -- buy the best glass you can afford and capture the best audio and you will stand out in the long run. Been in business for over 40 years. Cameras and lenses are the tools but CONTENT IS THE KING.
12 angry men, The Rainmaker with Burt Lancaster, Dirty Dozen, The English Patient. Smaller flick Gunless with Paul Gross.
