  • William Forrester reads Jamal's text as his own to prove that he has been unfairly treated.
    Watch now: play.google.com/store/movies/...
Jamal Wallace (Robert Brown) is an inner-city kid from the Bronx who has an aptness at basketball and a genius at writing. While always a C student, Jamal comes to the attention of a prestigious New York prep school when he scores highly on his standardized tests. While Jamal is given a heavy load at his new school, both he and the school know that the real reason they took him on is for his prowess on the court. Befriended by fellow student Claire (Anna Paquin) and helped along by Pulitzer-prize winning author and recluse William Forrester (Sean Connery), Jamal pursues his dreams both on and off the court while overcoming obstacles placed by his bitter literature teacher. As Jamal is shaped by Forrester, he finds that he is changing the old writer as well, forcing him to confront his past...and his future.

Horrendously underrated movie. Should've won best drama, best picture, best lead (Rob Brown), best female support(paquin), and best male support (Connery). And it shouldve been nominated for best cinematography and sound production.
Everyone in it is an Oscar nominee except for Brown, who was literally a casting call selection tgat ended up the lead. The story of the making of the movie is almost better than the film.
Also, Busta Rhymes steals every scene hes in.

Agreed. I’m a huge fan of Connery but not of the bond films. They were ok just not my thing. I really enjoyed his roles that were supportive. Not that he couldn’t carry a movie, but he had so many great secondary roles.

@@twittertwice Especially since Oscars do not indicate what are the best films. The Academy is just as political, even more so, then most other "popularity" awards. Just to give a shout out, Busta Rhymes was really good at his small role in this too. Just great performances all around. Schools could do this film in theater classes.

The words Jamal used were some of Forrester who already granted him permission to do so, hence improving his writing skills. Its like getting an extract from a sentence and being told to create your own story, its a test of one's creative/critical thinking skills. e.g - The cow jumped over the moon - why, how and what happened to cause this. This can be used as an opening of a story or the ending of one.

The cast was great, the actor who was the lead was very good and the writing...astounding. It's such a gem in the pile of crap that Hollywood has put out the past 25 years ago or so. And the ending of the movie...don't get me started. It's beautiful, happy yet sad but it's one of my favorite endings in a movie. Ever. ❤❤❤
