I was fortunate enough to sit on Gary's tour bus and chat with him.
He was a no nonsense guy who cared deeply about his sound and what his fans thought of it.
A truly unique guitarist and so under appreciated by the mainstream.
    RIP big fella.

Gary Moore was truly unique. He could go in full shred mode in the middle of a Blues solo without it sounding out of place or making it a formless stream of notes. His phrasing and his dynamics were just incredible. I'm a huge guitar music fan but I'm really not that into 30 minutes solos - except when done by Gary Moore, because he knew how to keep my attention the whole time and always giving me something new, something different, while at the same time being repetitive enough for it to be catchy.

Gary Moore, modern day guitar virtuoso, makes his instrument sing, whine, talk & cry. Only thing it couldn't do was get up and walk itself offstage. My fav is Parisienne Walkways with Gary & Phil Lynott. The way in which Gary wrote the song was otherworldly and he actually blew Phil off the stage in the performance. We miss Gary & Phil.

I think I would have to agree with your assessment of what Gary could make a guitar do, sing, whine etc. However one must give credit where credit is due and even though this guy is not on my top five list of great guitarists he must be acknowledged..... And that would be Roy Buchanan. When he wanted to he could make a guitar do just about anything that a human being could ever hope to do with that instrument. And do it well.

I went with my twin brother and I'd always maintained that he missed Gary Moore when he went to the toilet, which he denied. So you can imagine my joy when on the video after Phil pauses it and it shows a wider view of the crowd you can see him coming back to his seat. Just a small correction: Gary's next album after Still Got The Blues was in 1992 with After Hours, which contained classics like Story of the Blues, Separate Ways and Nothings The Same. It was interesting being a fan of Gary's blues playing, as like Fil my appreciation of his playing was solidified from his rock days with songs like The Loner, and even though I was starting to get into the heavier sounds of Pantera and Sepultura, I always had time for the unique expression of Gary's playing.

I have become really attached to neck pickups over the years, since I play pretty much 'pinky' slide in my regular rhythm and lead style, and it always yields the best sustain without too many harsh 'edges'. I also use my second finger like Gary does since there's always a slide on the pinky. Happy to see your subs climbing, as I think I may have predicted.

But your smile in this case is one of real enjoyment and respect from someone that you really enjoy . It shows a sense of awe in his playing style. It's great to see YOUR reaction to this performance. And yes I picked it up right away that Gary left his Peter Green 59 Les Paul at home and used a Fender Stratocaster just as Jimi would have done. Great, really great performance. Thank you for this.

Great video Phil, Gary is my all time favorite player. Did you know what is more amazing? Gary is actually left handed...Just amazing huh? "Moore suffered from the classic case of ‘right handed guitar as a gift’ despite being left handed. Now he’s one of the greatest blues guitarists on the earth."

His 2012 Blu-Ray "Blues For Jimi" is good too. Another of my favourite slow blues of his is " Driftin' " from Blues For Greeny. Over in N.America this song wasn't on "Are You Experienced", but the studio version was on the "Smash Hits" album. The version I am most used to is the 13 min. live version on the 1972 "Hendrix In The West" album. In the middle of that song, for contrast, think he switches to one of the in between pickup positions and uses the wah wah for a while.

I'm a bit of a Hendrix snob, lol, not really Hendrix rhythm but every bit as good! PURE Gary Moore! That's what I like about the greatest players, they make it their own and Gary never let us down!
