Blackmore, worlds greatest guitarist
I have lost count of the times I have seen Ritchie perform live. He still tops the list of artists I have seen perform multiple times. As a young teen he became my first "guitar hero" when I heard him on "Made in Japan". His playing and his stage presence, really something special. I have had the pleasure and honour of meeting lots of artists over the years, but having been able to shake hands with Ritchie a few times and certainly the time I met him backstage with my wife and my (then 9 year old) daughter at a castle in Germany will always stand out. I still see him and my daughter sitting next to each other on a few steps backstage. Ritchie really is one of a kind. Thank you for this analyses.
I agree. In his prime (though he still has great charisma) he was the most exciting performer/guitarist since Jimi Hendrix.
Ritchie is one of the few players whose sound and feel is so iconic and recognizable - you can pick out his sound from amidst a complete jumble of sounds. It is truly sad to see him not being celebrated like many of his less talented contemporaries are today.

yes.. he never seems to be mentioned when names are listed, like Clapton, page, other bluesbreakers guitarists and so on.. but he is such a guitarist.. his playing seems to have such a fluidity to it. just amazing.. 🙂
Its my guess he knows the truth, how other guitarists feared him and does not give a toss what anyone thinks. Must add this inspired me to go and mess with the Strat immediately. Thank you.
Th only reason he doesn't get talked about like his contemporaries is that he's never made himself available to media & has that whole " bad attitude " going on
@@gizzy2403 The media are always welcome to turn up to see him play and if they did they would see that he has never been more happy and amiable. Even during this time of stupidity he has been regularly seen and heard playing and talking on social media. I cannot say the same for the likes of Clapton, Page et al!!!
When people ask Jeff Beck or Eric Clapton, I say "Ritchie Blackmore"
Ritchie is best guitar player all time, his feeling, ideas and riffs are the best off rock n roll music.
Ritchie Blackmore definitely had a flair for the dramatic. His attention to detail emphasized his unique approach.
That is right , it comes from his love for classical music
To experience The Man In Black live in concert was a once in a lifetime moment. I was lucky enough to see him twice with Rainbow (DIO and Graham Bonnet on vocals). He commanded the stage and gave a blistering guitar lesson that still is burned into my mind and heart to this day. Ritchie Blackmore is legendary and we are all the luckier for it. Keep on playing RB

I remember watching this concert on MTV at that time (when they actually would play live concerts late at night on Friday nights) and was thoroughly entranced by Blackmore’s technique and style. I was just beginning to take my first steps towards learning the guitar, and he was one of my chief inspirations.

Fun to watch an accomplished guitarist appreciate a guitar hero who just kicks it out of the park with his playing. Rock guitar and gymnastics have a similar "look at what I can do" energy about them and this was an Olympic performance.

The Great Riff Master. One of my favorite guitarists of all time behind 2 of the greatest rock bands. He is also a really cool guy. One night a few of us waited hours after a show in the rain to hopefully meet him. He stopped his car and signed whatever we had. He even signed a guitar for a fan! Awesome analysis🤘🎸
Ritchie was always grateful for and generous with his fans, me included. That he stopped his car and took the time with y’all is no surprise 🤘🏼

Ritchie is hands down the best guitarist I've EVER heard, and I'm a musician, so that's a LOT! 🥰 But you haven't even heard the best of Ritchie until you listen to Blackmore's Night- he's just on a whole other level than everyone else! Listen to The Storm!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Ritchie Blackmore is an icon, always loved the raw emotion in his playing, technically great but never too perfect, emotions flavour and carry his solo's and playing to transcend the mere notes and techniques used.
He's a faster guitarist than most, cause he actually thinking and creating faster than most.
Blackmore is ABC of hard rock for every guitarist...there are thousands great guitarists all over the world, but none of them as specific, special as him. Sometimes I ger the impression he is not from this planet

Actually Graham Bonnet was the singer right before JLT. he only did the one great album 'Down to Earth' but it was awesome. The drummer is the great Bobby Rondinelli! I love all versions of Rainbow! Great video Fil, thanks for the break down.
Ritchie ability to find talent and get a lot out of the musicians is a great asset of his. If he burned out musicians, it ended up being for our benefit.

Excellent, as always! My fav guitarist and have been listening to him for almost 53 years. Hard to believe 'Hush" was one of my favorite songs back then and we listened to it on AM radio on our transistor radio, on top 40 in Chicago WLS it hit #5!

This is the third time I have watched this video and I am not a Guitarist but Ritchie for sure is my favorite. But I want to compliment you with your playing and great mind you have to understand what other Guitarists are doing. Analyzing seems very natural for you. Just want to thank you for helping me to at least understand techniques. Enjoyed this tremendously.

Mr. Blackmore is the Master of shades. His technique, vibrato, and phrasing is unrivaled. In the 1970s Mr. Blackmore was “THE GUITARIST”! The shows were all about Ritchie, he was the conductor and everyone had to follow his lead. If I had one guitarist to see as my dying wish, it would be Mr. Blackmore. My favorite Guitarist is St. Randy, but I would choose Mr. Blackmore everyday.

1982 I was fresh out of high school and these bands dominated my high school years. Unfortunately I was never able to see them in concert I still rocked out to their music. Another great band from 82' April Wine. Such entertaining performances.
April Wine, yes such a great band. If you are interested in metal bands who remained under the radar and never 'made it' I would recommend a channel called 'Rare & Obscure Metal Archives'. It's a nice channel with loads of wonderful music. Al the best.

I’ve always considered Ritchie Blackmore to be a solid step above all of the noodling and doodling VH wannabes who came out of the woodwork during the time frame spanning from the late 1970’s all the way into the early 1990’s. He was and still is not only technically proficient, but his playing is so packed full of feelings, emotions, and his own life experiences that no matter whether it’s clean or distorted, soft or loud, it is always expressive and imaginative to a level that cannot be measured. He is truly an original and one of a kind musician.
I have watched the San Antonio Concert many times. Blackmore's ability to change no matter who the singer is so creative. Ritchie has no equal. Master Blackmore.

you're so right about Ritchies stage presence. I've seen them all over nearly 50 years of gigging and he's simply electric, even in Blackmores Night he just has an aura that no-one else can match.

Maestro Blackmore is my all time favorite guitarist. I was fortunate to see them at 14 at Cal Jam . My older step sister kidnapped me and took me 😆😂😆

His playing alone messes with any guitarist's mind. Amazing band, too.
Tier 1-legends like Ritchie, SRV, Alvin, Gary, not to mention Jimi or Eric, have a much larger musicality than most metal shredders (names deleted in the interest of good taste), whose solos seem pretty empty and interchangeable, mostly just scales and fireworks, whereas Ritchie's solos are filled with passion, invention, feel, always closely connected to the music, no matter how fast he's playing. Just my two cents, and of course I could be wrong, but Fil will set me straight if I am.
Thanks for your excellent work, Fil. I periodically do binge listens of all versions of Deep Purple and Fleetwood Mac and offshoots (Rainbow, Whitesnake, Peter Green's Splinter Group, etc.). Ritchie Blackmore is consistently brilliant and never merely shreds.
The rainbow live album is a masterpiece. The opening alone is enough to melt your brain (over the rainbow, from"the wizard of Oz"), and that's only the beginning? He is truly one of the all time greats. Richie always leaves it ALL on the field.

Hi Fil, Great to see you featuring Ritchie as I have been listening to and also watching footage of Ritchie a lot over these past few weeks. He was one of the guitarists that I was really into from when I started playing myself back in the early 80s.I have always loved the look of the Strats that he used with the large headstock and of course his tone is superb IMO.

Of course nobody else sounds like him and nobody else really plays like him either. And that's gold by itself. It is married to a troubled character though and one who was clearly fairly ruthless about what sort of people he wanted around him. Nice to see Joe Lynn Turner here as well. People seem to forget now how difficult it can be to project at that level and have the range to do it.
I watched Ritchie play with Rainbow in 2016 at the NEC in Birmingham , yes he was older but he still commanded that stage and brilliant , I remember what Ritchie said about Hendrix always searching for notes, I guess that means not searching for perfection as some of the speed demons today on guitar, that has stuck with me in my learning of the guitar in my 50's you never know what you will find that works lol, but here is cool story that was a from Ritchie that Clapton Beck Page and Blackmore all lived pretty much in the same area, I wonder what was in the water in that part of London,

Ritchie Blackmore is one hell of a guitarist! Certainly my favourite guitarist and I put him up there with Hendrix 'cause not only he was a brilliant musician he also had the showmanship and really knew to how to make a good concert if he was inspired. Deep Purple Copenhagen 1972, Made In Japan, California Jam 1974 and Rainbow Live in Munich 1977 and Live Between The Eyes really show it
Back in the 70's I first heard Rainbow rising, Stargazer blew me away and made my hair stand on end. Without that I would have never picked up the guitar

This is one of my favourite live examples of Ritchie Blackmore. He’s just having fun and shows how he can turn an average studio track into something special. Shame about the camera work though. Catch the Rainbow is another example.
Loved early Rainbow, Tarot Woman is an all time jam. One thing though, wasn't it Joe Lyn Turner who was singing in 1982? Dio was gone and doing time with Black Sabbath at this time. Cheers! You sure are cranking out the heavy rock jams of late, love it!

Not difficult to spot where Yngwie got his inspiration from
Blackmore for sure, but he also said Hendrix was his main inspiration for playing rock n roll. Personally I love Hendrix and Blackmore, so it’s not difficult to imagine these two were his main inspiration.
Yngwie is fusion between Ritchie, Uli Jon Roth and Hendrix.
I don’t get Yngwie. To me, he is playing a boat load of notes in short time and that’s about it.
Yngwie often sidesteps talking about Ritchie, I suspect for that reason. I’ve come to really appreciate Yngwie over the years. He has developed his own unmistakable style. Making a virtue out of “more ... is more” as poss’ only he can.

Blackmore’s technique is most unique. He has the ability to make each note sing with emotion and sustain. His phrasing is unique amongst guitarists.

Agreed, The Snippet of "Smoke" at the end shows the Power of that Riff. This Video (Live Between the Eyes) is Still my Favorite Concert Film of all Time. Changed my Life. Spoiled me when compared to other Players. Totally Captivating from Start to Finish. Still Have my Biases.........Saw This, Then Heard Perfect Strangers. After that the Bar was Set Really High. HOW ABOUT THAT GROWLING STRAT SOUND. Definitely some of RBs' Heaviest Recordings. FIRE---------

One of my favorite songs by Rainbow.
A great analysis by Fil, I’ve always wondered about Ritchie’s playing style and Fil helped to explain a lot about his sound and chord usage. I’ve always admired his ability to play fast with great tone. Shout out to Fil as well, I’m always I impressed by the way he so effortlessly duplicates the tone and sound (punctuated by his trademark smile).
The story about Ritchie!s friend ruining the frets on his guitar is reminiscent of the story behind Jimmy Page’s legendary Dragon Telecaster. Jimmy left the guitar in the care of an artist friend when he went on tour. When he returned he discovered his friend had repainted the guitar as a “gift” which not only destroyed Jimmy’s original paint work but also ruined the sound. The guitar was originally given to him by Jeff Beck and was used on the first 3 Led Zep albums including the guitar solo on Stairway To Heaven.

Blackmores one of those rare guitarists that can improvise every solo he does, he may be the best improviser ever, and that sound of his is so distinctive, when you here him you know it’s him, you can’t imitate that kind of wild and edgy playing, love it!!
I just got a music lesson. Man thank you. Blackmore commands attention. Seen with Purple Rainbow God of guitars we all idolized Blackmore Page, Hendrix , Beck Iommi. My biggest mistake was that my first two albums that I listened to when I started getting into music were machine head and made in Japan. Sure other bands might have done one thing or another better but as a totality nobody did it better than Purple.
