Those guys all grew up on Deep Purple, as did everyone in our generation. They absolutely nailed it. Also agree with your observations on Michael Anthony...very under appreciated in Van Halen.
Joe Satriani was in Deep Purple.
You're so right about Michael Anthony's backing vocals, they are as much of Van Halen's sound as Eddie's guitars
Nice that someone recognizes Michael for his Van Halen contributions. Highly underrated when in the band. When they kicked him out Van Halen success left too.
Not only did they kick out Anthony, Eddie bad mouthed him. Anthony never answered back, but Sammy did.
Yeah FUCK THEM DUDES!! Sammy
I like Michael too,. But I don't think they are hurting without him in 07 they made 93million on tour, that was their biggest tour in their career, and that was without Michael Anthony
@@sdavis6806 June 08 actually. They finished the tour in Grand Rapids, MI. I couldn't believe it! Still getting over a million a show in 08.
@@Hickbilly9 it was awesome, I saw them in Toronto in Oct 07
Talent overload, best cover band for Deep Purple (who is one of the best rock band of the 70's.) Satrianni(sp) covers both keyboards and lead, great version, great review thanks
Sammy has become one of my favorite artists, really all of the guys in the Circle have, too. When you hear them on interviews or see them on AXS TV, you get that not only are they hard working artists, but they are genuinely nice people. The type of people who you like to support.
Great analysis, Fil. IMO, Michael Anthony's talent cannot be overstated. He has never taken the spotlight in any band, yet he has all the goods to do that. He adds so much to every band he plays in. Also, he is a genuine a nice guy. Perhaps one of the greatest "side man" in RnR. EVH made a big mistake by leaving him behind.
Totally agree
Amen!
This is one of my favourites, and goes a long ways to redeem Michael Anthony for "Running with the Devil". The way EVH treated him was very shabby. Chad Smith is amazing as well.
Impeccable performance, Satch got that John Lord key sound perfect! Great chemistry here, Will Ferrell is a beast on drums🤘🏻
need more cow bell
😂👍
Joe really did nail Jon Lord's solo, very impressive! I've heard that solo is extremely difficult to play on guitar. All the guys sound great. Just like Purple, they're high way ☆'s
Mark Evrard Some jamming banjo would just push it over the top
Good job on it guys, but not even close to the Made in Japan version. Sorry Joe is no Ritchie Blackmore, just not badass enough. Chad Smith no Ian Paice, and Sammy no Ian Gillian. Michael Anthony, yeah even with Roger Glover.
Thank You Fil for showcasing CHICKENFOOT, my favorite Super Group along with The Traveling Wilbury's, of all time. These guys are the best of the best of the best, great talents, great friends and you can see they're having so much fun. Just love all CHICKENFOOT bandmates. You won't find better talent anywhere. Come on! There we have it! 🎸🎵✌
The band Van Halen WISHED it was ! This is just damn good ! Thanks, Fil.
too bad the VAST majority of VanHalen followers disagree with you..read the polls
Just MY opinion. Don’t care who might agree or disagree.
@@jimz68 LOL I like it
I love how Satriani mimicked the keyboard solo with the pitch shifter
Thanks, I noticed that but I am only a layman.
Yes, I like that too. !
👍
Joe was really channeling Richie. A master class in being a rockstar.
I was thrilled when this band came out and was lucky enough to see them live at the Beacon Theater in NYC after the release of their third album. They were amazing in concert. And for the record Michael Anthony is perhaps the best damn back up vocalist ever!
Thanks for posting a fantastic review of the supergroup!!
No problem!
Michael Anthony was the main harmony of the background vocals of Van Halen' s songs. Chickenfoot did nothing short of justice to this Deep Purple classic. Great piece Fil.
This was excellent. They can draw you in/bring the audience into it without just blowing you away just for the sake of it. Satriani is super articulate and super fast but he never loses me.... As you said the expression and melodic content is so palpable that it’s all absorbable. It’s not intimidating in the way a lot of shredding is. There’s that respect for the enjoyment of the audience.
if this song doesn't get you pumped better check for a pulse.
😎🎸
Thanks for the heads up. I called an ambulance and they're on their way.
👍
Hahaha, that's so wright!! :-)
Satriani played that lead almost exactly like Blackmore did! That was so good!
Of course he did. Don't forget he replaced Ritchie in Deep Purple in '93-'94 and he learned to play the solos like Ritchie did. He didn't accept that gig to showcase his talent because he knew the audience was expecting to hear Ritchie's solos. : )
@@Module79L I don't doubt his skill, if that's what you thought I meant. Players often put their own interpretations on the lead, this one was pretty much spot-on
@@wtglb - No, I understood exactly what you meant. If Joe hadn't played in DP he'd probably put his own spin on it. : )
@Richard - Yeah, Ritchie left DP for good in the middle of their '93 tour and they had to find someone A.S.A.P., so they "borrowed" Joe to finish that tour and he ended up staying for the '94 European tour as well.
He covered Jon Lords parts pretty damn good too!
Everytime I watch a Chickenfoot video, it looks like these guys are having way too much fun LOL. They mesh together so well
I remember the first time I saw this video and also felt that this is one of the greatest line ups ever. Joe is a big Blackmore fan and he absolutely crushes this song. Fil, I can feel the goose bumps in your voice. I don't use this word too much, but here it goes, Awesome
Hey Fil! Sammy was in his mid-60s when he did this! He's 71 now - never too old to rock. Check out his more current band The Circle also with Michael Anthony and Jason Bonham on drums!
Yeah!
Killer pick, great analysis. There must be 300years worth of experience on that stage. By the way hope you had a real nice Birthday...
Yer The Man🤘 ROCK🤘
Thanks Mitch!
The intro blew mind when I first saw this...I watched it over and over. Sure looks like they are having fun. Awesome song to cover. The keyboard solo is smok'n.
This was supposed to be a fun tour. Sammy and Michael was a little miffed that David Lee Roth wanted to tour without them, and they were in Sammy's bar in Mexico and decided to put a band together. They decided they needed a good guitarist, so why not Joe? They had a lot of fun, it showed and the audience appreciated it. We were in Montreux and there were barricades in front of the stage from the previous 2 bands, (Dave Matthews and Steely Dan). So we were about 10 people back, but a good 20 meters from the stage. After one song, Sammy called security over. He said to take out the barriers, then he had everybody come up close. There is someone that filmed the concert on his smart phone, and I was just behind him so you have an idea how close we were.
tell me your kidding about the keyboard solo...
Jon Lord's ghost was on the ghost Hammond.
0:38 i could easily write a book about this dual vocal intro section. it's such a powerful statement. just beautiful. :-D
Now that's a howdy howdy. Chemistry you said it and it applies. Hats off to Michael he's a badass. Would have asked you to check this one out myself if I had seen it. Great job Fil as always. I forgot the organ damn, that's how good that sounded.
🤘👍
A big boy cover by some big boy musicians. I love this.
Thanks Fil!
Peace. JR
🤘
This is a great cover. Satch playing the Jon Lord solo then the Blackmore solo is just phenomenal! Also Sammy and Satch harmonizing ala DP Gillan & Blackmore is just fantastic!!!
Chad Smith is a really great drummer! Satriani is spot on here.
Thanks for this share, Fil!
You're right...Van Halen sounded like Van Halen because of Michael Anthony.
One of the best rock songs ever!! Geeze Louise !!! Micheal Anthony is cookin out on the bass to. The there's Joe!
👍
Michael Anthony has the voice of an angel
Okay. That was just a mind-blowing cover!!
Sammy is no slouch on the guitar too. There are several vids of this band and he can rock
I saw them in Montreux and he did a conversation with Joe. My friend is a guitar player and knows his stuff (he grew up with Eddie Van Halen) and he was impressed.
👍
Long time since I've heard this song in any form.
Nice memory!
Eddie Van Halen on Michael Anthony: "I had to show him how to play". "He's not a singer. He just has a range from hell". "I have more soul as a singer than he does". "And you know, people always talk about Mike's voice on Van Halen songs, but that's a blend of Mike's voice and my voice. It's not just him".
When bitterness and jealousy finally cause you to reach the point of pure delusion.
😂👍
I wonder why Eddie had to attack Anthony? Why so much hate. I heard Michael Anthony sing many times and he is great in the background. He never claimed to be a frontman.
@@rickjason215 He didn't have to claim anything, because he actually was a lead vocalist in a couple of bands, before he joined VH. One of those bands was a power trio called Snake. The band featured two lead vocalists. They played a few originals and covered songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and Foghat
Chad always looks like he’s having so much funn playing music.
It’s infectious
WHOA! MONSTER TALENT UP THERE! That drummer (Chad Smith) and the key board playing was wayyyyyy over the top! What can i say, that song had me bouncing in my chair, how can anyone not? And Joe Satriani is Da Bomb! He is currently touring with The Experience Hendrix, they were all here in Chicago, @ The Chicago Theater on March 22nd, i was supposed to go, the person i was going with, well... was a Cheap Ass @ the last minute, so that was the end of that, and him, lol! Fil, you were so excited about this talented group, i loved how enthused you were about this video, Spot On, as usual! RAWK! \M/
Killer intro on this track! great analysis and break down on working together as a unit. thanks Fil,
👍
nice to see a band having fun.
Great analysis of a great performance. Joe does a great job, taking on an iconic song. He was trained well on it during his time in Deep Purple as he was the replacement for Blackmore when he left the last time and before Steve Morse took on that duty.
Great one to review Fil! I love how Satriani plays both the organ and guitar parts of the song. Sammy, even at 71, is much better than most anybody else. Simply amazing musicians!
👍
New fan of Chickenfoot. Thx Fil
Saw DP twice in 1973 at Vorst National in Brussels 🇧🇪🇧🇪I’d love to see these guys 😎👏👏👏👏👍🏻🥂
What a kick ass band!! Superb!!
That song will be around for a long, long time.
Wow! Great pick me up on a dreary gray day. Don't think I have heard this group before. I learn so much from your videos! I don't play an instrument, but I love your analysis and enthusiasm!
Wow - you know your music - great job again and bless you! You rock brother!
Crazy song played and song by the best! Satch rocks and what a joy playing with friends. No showing off, just trying to get the Deep Purple sound. Well; succeeded!
This is timely.Sammy's all in now with The Circle and I remember a 1077TheBone interview with JS and Sammy (?) discussing the forming of this band. back in the good ol' days.
@Chewy Ltd Thank you for the thoghtful reply. Sammy's still at it and after all thats gone on, thats what matters. Saw Montrose at Winterland with him and saw him there and The Cow Palace as a solo act. Ruled! Also bought a good receiver (Quadraflex 35 watt/pioneeer) and Sammy's 9 on a 10 'Scale the same day. Almost blew one of my bookshelf speakers out!
Loved this version the first time I heard it. Michael’s voice really caught my attention.
If it hasn't been said already-on the Van Halen 3 tour (Gary Cherone) Mike did the lead vocals on 'Somebody Get Me A Doctor'. There's a video of it on the tube somewhere.
Thank you for the review - those men continue to be superb. It’s nearly impossible to believe Sammy is in his 70’s.
The talent on this stage can not be measured.
Joe is amazing on this as he is doing the Jon Lord runs and Ritchie Blackmore with so much accuracy
These guys are SO good that you don't even notice that the organ part (which was heavily featured in the Deep Purple version) is completely missing. Amazing!
👍
They have Satriani on the six string organ @ 2.28
Love Sammy & Michael A!
And that is why they are called a, "Super group" I love Chickenfoot, awesome cover. Fil, great choice, excellent analysis!
Thanks Kathy!
WOW! Stage full of talent!!
Truly a SUPER GROUP!!!
HailYes!. Grrreat video & content. I thank thee for sharing all...
No problem!
Fil, I think you set a record for smiling in this video. ... rightfully so... this is a tight performance.... I pray that chickenfoot will release another album. I get a kick out of Sammy when he calls Joe “Smoke” ....a good name for him😀
Oh, no wonder my face hurts from all the grinning along!
That is a star lineup. I would love to see them live. I wish they toured more.
Short version of your analysis. Seasoned, experienced, great musicians all. To them it's all about the music and all about the show. Good job.
They sound good. Sammy can still sing and Michael Anthony can still high notes, and Joe Satriani, what more can I say!
👍
Another performance where if you were there that night; your life is just a little bit better than 99.9999999% of the remainder of us that missed it.
oh yea... the energy was off the charts... hair on the back of my neck stands up just thinking about it! Great review of what was an incredible moment of performers, sum truly was greater than the parts!!!
Four masters on their game just laying it down...... ROCK!
Never heard much of this band (I know the front 3). But they did a great job and I'm surprised Sammy did NOT play some guitar on this. I caught him humming the guitar solo so that Satch could harmonize with it. that was cool. I heard this was just a band that formed because they just wanted to play good tunes. Have fun. Not try to win a grammy or sell a billion albums. Always loved Michael Anthony's vocals in Van Halen. His bass playing was solid like a rock, too. Shame the half-breeds from the Netherlands couldn't seem to work anything out. I love Sammy but for me, Dave will always be the sound of Van Halen. Thanks, Fil.
Truth you're a great singer. Watch your covers all the time!
👍🏻
All I can say is: WOW! The intro to this song alone is worth the price of admission... 🤘🤘🤘 Thanks Fil!!
It is a legendary act
Another great pick! What a performance! Talk about a "supergroup"! With all that talent, and THEN Joe Satriani himself! There's a point when Joe is playing the lead and just throws his head back in a moment of the pure joy of playing. It just doesn't get better than this!
When I first heard this performance I was blown away. It instantly became my favourite version of what has always been a song that I love the energy of. As you point out, everything about it is just brilliant. Without an organ Joe's contribution is simply amazing. The vocal harmony from Michael is just a treat and Sammy providing the harmony of the originally double tracked lead guitar gives us something missing from most live renditions. Chad is one of my favourite drummers (Ian Paice tops my all time list). He really drives this along with more energy than the song has ever had. I love this performance and really good to have your review.
Highway star on almost every driving collection ever. who hasn't driven down a motorway to this track? 1972 classic covered well :)
HELL YEAH!!!! THANK YOU FIL!!! Made my day sir.
A legendary song played by a group of legends all in their own right! Great to see bands like Chickfoot still out there playing kick ar#se rock music! Rock on! To good Fil..brilliant! Cheers Mario!😎😎🤘🤘
Thanks Mario!
This great! I love DP and this version of Highway star, super thanks for this analysis 😊 ❤🤘
Michael/Sammy’s vocals are mind blowing! Was in Cabo 19 yrs ago sitting at a bar outside of Sammy’s condo hoping to score an autograph.....he was touring in the states. Such is the luck in Lodie-land. 🙄
Cool!
STELLAR performance!!!!! Thanks, Fil, for your analysis! I agree that Michael Anthony's voice is superb!!! Such GREAT musicians!!
Thanks Sally!
wow...that just blew me away!!...loved it
First time I’ve seen Chickenfoot....great review....WHAT a fantastic line up and cover, they were on fire! Ooooft!
woahhhh ! ♡
Exactly!
One of the best covers of one of the best songs of all time. Thanks Fil. ROCK!
This was fun..I immediately left this to listen to 'Oh Yeah'...cool collaboration I'd forgotten about..thanks again...😀
Mr Fil. Your analysis choices get better & better. Always wait with abated breath every night to see what you analize. Keep up the superb work. Loved this video. RAWK!!!
Jeff Beck is one of the most innovative players of my my memory. I saw him in Long Beach about 1972 with Beck, Bogert, and Appice. Again I saw him in 2005 with a keyboard and drummer. Somehow I thought I posted these comments to Peter Frampton's recent video analysis by Phil.
Love the way Joe's playing sounds so much like John lord's organ parts and at the same time you have guitar which I never paid attention to it until now. 🤘
That was AMAZING! I have too many thoughts to relegate them to the comment section of CZcams so...I’ll pick one. I absolutely LOVE seeing all these top notch musicians “crushing it” but also so obviously having a blast doing it! Sure would like to have a pint with you and talk over stuff like this...or tea...I’m rather fond of that as well, but sadly, I live on the wrong side of the “pond” for that. Thanks for all you do, and looking forward to the next one!
Michael Anthony!!!
Best cover I’ve ever heard of the best drivers song ever written!!!!
So True about Michael Anthony - His voice is just crazy. He was a huge part of Van Halen's sound. Again, his range is just crazy! Well said!!!!
Chad is just an animal on the drums on this song, like no other drummer can but him giving 120% the whole time and yet he still keeps the basic beat the whole time
Truly out of this world major Jam!
I find it amazing that these guys sounded as good , if not better than Deep Purple , without the benefit of a keyboard player ! Once again thanks , Fil !
Great stuff
Love Highway Star. Awesome cover
I didn't get with the Satriani program until his 2nd album came out, Surfing with the Alien. That album blew my mind it was so good. It's crazy to think he's only become a better guitarist since those days.
👍
You know what else is amazing? Deep Purple played this almost 50 years ago.
I saw Judas Priest / Deep Purple last September and I was 6th row center stage. Anyway, the keyboards were extremely loud and I couldn't even stand it with earplugs in. This is a nice version without the keys.
Where did you see them?
Baby Hominid Darien Lake... Near Buffalo, NY.
Supergroup indeed...
Love your analysis of VH!
Thank you Fil! I've been watching a number of covers of "Highway Star" the last few days, so I was glad to see this in my feed today! One thing I noticed in the other covers was how easy it is to let the tempo meander, however slightly, on this track. When that happens on "Highway Star" that robs the performance of almost all its energy; even if the variance is slight and even if the playing is otherwise good. These guys , as one would expect, get it. The tempo was laser-sharp throughout. And the playing and vocals, of course, off the chart.
👍
They kill it! On their game!
Its like the pro bowl here in the states football all the best on one team..great show fil.....rock on brother😎
Fantastic! Mike is really underrated, bass and vocals: he can sing to the bats and play to the elephants. I think Sammy just keeps getting better...Ian Gillan is somewhere shaking his fist. Throw in Satch and Chad, and Ring Around the Rosie will sound like a rock anthem. Liking Satch's "Hammond" tone on the solo too.
Okay Fil, I got a serious request...a fellow Okie from Duncan...the late GREAT *Hoyt* *Axton* . Buttery smooth Bass-Baritone voice, always backed by top-notch musicians. And the songs....wonderful things. His concerts were like Grateful Dead or Widespread Panic but with folk and country. A singer-songwriter (actor too), his most popular songs were made famous by other people. His mother wrote Heartbreak Hotel for some guy kinda famous...can't remember. Songs to check out: Rusty 'Ol Halo, Della and the Dealer, Boney Fingers, and *gotta* do "Evangelina"
*Guaranteed* Awesome...any song. You ROCK, Fil!
Thanks!
